With the games coming thick and fast over the Christmas period, we’re covering the next three gameweeks in a Differentials ‘Christmas special’.

While a Robin Van Persie goal is about a predictable as sprouts for dinner at this time, there’s something slightly more magical about picking a player that no one else has, and seeing them bring home the points. With the January wildcard available from gameweek 21, there’s never been a better time to take a punt on a ‘Differential’. So go on, take a risk or two. If it goes wrong, you can always blame it on the sherry…..

Leon Osman

Leon Osman’s goal against Swansea was his second in two games, and with maximum bonus in both matches he has been a huge differential for the 1.5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers that currently own the versatile midfielder. Royston Drenthe may be the most eye-catching option in the Everton midfield, but with doubts over his fitness making him a rotation risk, Osman is the smart choice. The dimunative midfielder has been one of Everton’s key players in the last 12 months and, barring injury, he looks about as rotation proof as anyone right now.

Key to his recent upturn in form has been David Moyes’ decision to play him “in the hole” behind Louis Saha, a position he revelled in during the latter part of last season. With Tim Cahill struggling for form and fitness, it seems he could now be in for a run of games in this role, which makes him a very interesting prospect considering Everton’s upcoming fixtures. A trip to Sunderland and West Brom is followed by that double gameweek in week 20, and at just 6.7m he could be a great investment.

Kieran Richardson

Sunderland’s 3-2 win over QPR on Wednesday was only the second time this season they’ve scored 3 or more goals in a game, and Martin O’Neill’s arrival seems to have had a positive impact on several of Sunderland’s attacking players. Kieran Richardson may have been moved back to the left-wing after a run of games in the centre, but he still picked up two assists at QPR and along with Stephane Sessegnon, he looks a decent budget pick over the medium term.

Sunderland’s next two games against Everton and Man City aren’t the easiest, but with both fixtures at home they will still expect a couple of goals, and the trip to Wigan also offers potential for Richardson get amongst the points. With rotation rife at this time of year, the fact that Richardson has started every game since week four makes him a decent option as a fifth midfielder. Priced at just 5.8 and an ownership of 0.8%, he could also prove to be a handy differential.

Peter Odemwingie

After his bizarre falling out with manager Roy Hodgson last month, the injury problems that had plagued Odemwingie earlier in the season appear to have mysteriously disappeared: it seems the consistent form from last term has returned. Odemwingie has been hugely influential in recent games, and with four goals and three assists in as many matches, including that stunning solo goal against Blackburn, paying that extra 1.5 over team-mate Shane Long looks well worth it right now.

As one of the standout performers from last season, Odemwingie is capable of scoring against anyone and the prospect of facing Man City, Everton and Tottenham over the next three gameweeks, shouldn’t worry him too much. Few will have expected returns against Newcastle last time out, but Odemwingie fetched a goal and an assist in the Baggies’ 3-2 win. With Demba Ba available for a similar price, Odemwingie has been mostly overlooked, but with Newcastle’s fixtures tightening up and Ba off to the African Cup of Nations in a couple of weeks, Odemwingie could be an ideal swap to carry you into the New Year.

merry xmas one and all, hope everyone has had a good day!

down to business... 2 FTs and want rid of baines.

at the moment i'm looking at getting evans in for him, and FINALLY replacing gabbidon with any defender up to 7.2. looking at vermaelen/walker/bae/enrique/agger/huth as a replacement. who would you pick?
verm could be a great punt but a little unsure considering arsenals injury situation at the back, and if i went for a spurs defender it sorts me for the DGW whilst leaving me 1.5 to throw around in the event of injuries etc over the next couple of gameweeks.

what would you do?! thanks lads

The one who you think will score the most.

Don't worry about what he's going to do, just concentrate on maximising your own tally. Long way for season to run still.

I'd be keeping Baines, he's so close to a DGW.
      Vermaelen is not possible then.
Use one freebie to swap Gabbidon for Shotton.

really think he's just wasting a spot in my team tbh, even with the dgw coming up. he'll probably get 4 pts for those 2 games and i'll have sacrificed the possibility of having 2 solid players for 3 games each rather than baines and gabbidon for 3 and 4 games (really badly worded but hope you can understand what i mean!)

Verm is probably a better pick once the rest of Arsenal's defence is fit, I'd go for either BAE or Enrique. I have both, and BAE's DGW situation doesn't guarantee two clean sheets, but does have potential, though Liverpool have a better defence.

I reckon BAE and Evans are your best bet, reinvest cash elsewhere up til WC time

    Mignolet

    Enrique Kompany Jones Evans

    Silva Nani Drenthe

    RVP Sturridge Ba

    Bench: Schwarzer Brown Brunt Moses

Have 1.6m in bank, 1 free transfer.

    Any changes needed?

Planning on getting Ade in for Ba next week, which leaves me with 0.1m in bank.. Should I get rid of Schwarzer this week?

I do not see myself transferring out RVP at this stage in time ever. He will have to go at least 3 games without scoring for me and someone else (Aguero/Rooney) will have to be scoring big for me to even consider such a move.

Im considering that, but im hoping for a slight drop in form or a knock, to make the decision for me. The fixtures look pretty bad after GW 19, and I always have been one to play the fixtures. Everyone will say "well look at what he did against Chelsea". But Chelsea was playing worst defense than Bolton at that point, so I would not go hoping for another Hat trick against a big team.

With Ade, Bale, (plus on form) VDV, Cahill & Baines and you would be in for a whopping points haul.

As things stand we're shopping around in the bargain bin for players like Osman, Howard, Hibbert, Jags & Drenthe who will need shipping out as soon as the DGW is over

Midfielder needed for 2 GW punt and 8.9m to spend. Players i like in the price range and with decent fixtures:

Walters, Larsson, Arteta, Yaya Toure, Walcott, Etherington, Adam, Drenthe.

Any of them to deliver some festive cheer? Or anyone i've overlooked?

Yeah have Bale. Can't get Cahill with his recent record. Osman is an interesting one (as highlighted in the article!) but i'd still get Drenthe if i went with an Everton player

I think Walcott is a great punt for 2 weeks, might be time for one of his explosions soon.

I like but do you think he's a cert to start both games? I remember Wenger talking about rotation around this period and i think Oxlade-Chamberlain may get a start, perhaps against QPR?

I wouldn't THINK so, but maybe.

Regardless, I think Walcott is the one with far and away the highest potential to give you a huge point boost, which is what I'd look for in a 2 week punt like that.

Well the OTHER thing i could do is Jones & Ba > Shawcross & Rooney. Would leave my midfield short (probably playing just Bale-Nani-Silva for GW18 & 19) but it is still attractive. Reckon i could get away with it?

What a season you're having SD. You're going to win it at this rate.

I don't think it makes sense to lose Jones & Ba right now, I think Ba has a great chance to score against Bolton and Phil Jones is a great pick too, even if being yellow makes it trickier.

You could probably get away with it but I'm not so sure it would earn you more points.

hmmmmm when you look at it like that my transfers look pretty ugly. Jones and Ba both have decent games this week and on top of that Stoke may well concede to Villa.

I still think Rooney will tear it up over these next 2 GWs, gonna be hard to sit back and watch without having him though! You reckon just O'Hara > Walcott for the next couple of games and just pray Nani steals Rooney's points?

Yes, I like that move more.

I'm personally going to stick it out with Evans, Jones & Nani as my United players too. Rooney is a great pick obviously but I wouldn't break my team to fit him in. I guess it all comes down to how much you believe in him. For me it's more likely than not that you'll be better off this way.

Yep i agree. Although next problem for me is Adebayor. I see you already have him, imo he will outscore Ba this week so i'm a bit jealous!

Obviously he becomes a must have for the DGW but when should i get him?!? Ba > Adebayor right now is a possibility but the safer play is probably to leave the cash in the bank to do the move next week (although Swansea away has hardly proved an easy game for anyone this season) and shore up my midfield for now. Means getting a O'Hara replacement for 7.0m and no Walcott 🙁

wouldn't want to get rid of jones nor ba before this gameweek, no matter how good roon and shawx fixtures are. can easily see jones grabbing a goal this week, and ba could easily destroy bolton.

you're relying on rooney to explode, same dilemma ive been struggling with this GW- and ive decided to leave him be. just can't be sure about his points with hernandez or welbeck playing in front of him, 5 goals vs fulham and he only got 1 goal was enough to put me off him.

strengthen elsewhere- i'd go with walcott in your position

+1 Makes good sense mate. Think i've FINALLY settled on not getting young Wayne.

Now to decide whether to go with Walcott or save some cash for Ba > Adebayor at a later date and get a cheaper midfielder instead.

that one's a toss up. walcott could do well but how good is his form? i havent really watched a lot of arsenal recently but he doesnt seem to be doing THAT well. there is certainly value around the 6 mill bracket, just depends who you can afford to allow funds for the ade upgrade, who is surely a must have for the DGW. ethers could be a decent punt.

anyway bed time, good night and good luck this week!

Can't argue with you there. Baines is grossly overpriced imo. Has not even come close to his form of last year that saw him move to that price. Part of that is the Everton attack this year and unless they get a real striker the Baines woes will continue.
