Antonio Valencia continues his return to form with a double-figure points haul at Old Trafford, though it’s a certain Bulgarian who steals the show. Juan Mata again demonstrates his preference for home comforts, Demba Ba’s consistency helps send Bolton to defeat, while Leighton Baines’ Fantasy owners may be sending Howard Webb a belated Christmas present:

Dimitar Berbatov
While Javier Hernandez failed to play a part in any of his side’s 5 goals, the Bulgarian – in only his second start of the season- served a reminder of his capabilities with a hat-trick against Wigan. Wayne Rooney was afforded just less than half an hour by Sir Alex Ferguson and also failed to get amongst the points, with Berbatov firing home a penalty for his third despite Rooney being on the pitch. While many Fantasy managers have been concerned over Robin Van Persie’s possible game time this festive period, Rooney’s omission was a huge shock –and blow- to those who acquired his services for the champions’ favourable run of Christmas fixtures. Given he was benched for this one, though, Rooney looks more assured of a start on New Years Eve at home to Blackburn.

Antonio Valencia
Injuries to others meant the Ecuadorian was forced to play at right-back but he continued his run of consistent points hauls since coming back into the United first XI. Valencia’s goal and assist in the 5-0 romp over Wigan means he has now contributed 6 assists and a goal in his last four matches and can, once again, be expected to return bonus points for his performance. With Ji-Sung Park drafted into the first-team, Nani was shifted back over to the right and, while the Portuguese winger failed to fire, the former mirrored Valencia’s returns in his first start since gameweek 12.

Anders Lindegaard
David de Gea was given the day off yet again, with Lindegaard getting the nod between the sticks. He maintained a remarkable record of recording a clean sheet in every appearance so far this season, with 5 out of 5. Bearing in mind that he has never played two games in a row this season, the chances of Lindegaard keeping his place for the game against Blackburn is perhaps dubious.

Juan Mata
The Chelsea man continued his habit of plundering the points at Stamford Bridge, bagging the Blues only goal in a frustrating 1-1 draw with Fulham. Mata has scored all 4 of his goals and provided 5 of 7 assists in front of the home faithful. Daniel Sturridge’s recent fine run of form came to an unexpected halt, with the forward failing to score of assist for the first time since gameweek 11. Chelsea were unlucky to grab the 3 points, with an inspired display from David Stockdale preventing them from triumphing- the Cottagers keeper made 12 saves in a brilliant display for the visitors.

Clint Dempsey
There’s little doubt Fulham’s fixtures were, on paper, anything but straightforward of late but the American once again proved how pivotal a figure he is for Martin Jol’s side. Dempsey bagged the winner against Liverpool a few weeks back and his equaliser at the Bridge means he has netted 3 times in his last five appearances. With Norwich, Blackburn, Newcastle and West Brom to come in four of his next five, Dempsey has every chance of continuing his recent goalscoring antics.

Martin Skrtel
The Reds were denied a fourth consecutive clean sheet by a Charlie Adam own goal but Skrtel’s potential for points at both ends of the pitch continues to grow. An assist in the surprise 1-1 home draw with Blackburn means Skrtel has now – pre-bonus- averaged 8 point per game over his last four appearances, and with just 3.4% ownership, compared to Jose Enrique’s 37.3%, he’s proving a handy differential in the Reds’ resolute back-four.

Demba Ba
Another game, another goal for the Newcastle forward as Alan Pardew’s side picked up their first win in seven matches. Ba has now scored 14 goals in his last 13 games in a run that has seen his fail to score or assist on only three occasions. Up next, however, are clashes with Liverpool and Man United, and with Ba then set to depart for the African Cup of Nations, his Fantasy owners have something of a quandary on their hands- do they jump ship now or hold until he’s no longer unavailable for selection? There’s no doubt the fixtures are against him but Ba has already netted against the likes of Spurs and United this term and assisted against Man City- clearly, he’s capable of producing regardless of opponent.

Ryan Taylor
Taylor may have lost his starting place to Davide Santon last week but an injury to the Italian allowed him to return to the Newcastle first XI for the trip to Bolton. Taylor had picked up just 6 points in the previous six gameweeks but an assist, in addition to a clean sheet in the 2-0 Reebok triumph, proved dividend for his 32% of Fantasy owners. The 100,000+ managers who shipped him out over the last couple of gameweeks will perhaps be ruing their decision- Santon may find it difficult to dislodge him once again ahead of Friday’s trip to Anfield.

Leon Osman
The Everton midfielder once again played a crucial part for David Moyes’ side as the Toffees fought back to defy Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Having scored both his side’s goals over the previous couple of gameweeks, Osman continued his run of attacking returns, by providing an assist for Leighton Baines’ spot-kick equaliser. There’s no doubt, however, the decision by Howard Webb to award the penalty for a foul on Osman was, shall we say, more than a little fortuitous; the midfielder certainly seems to trip over his own feet in the build-up to the goal, with no Sunderland challenge apparent. Baines’ owners will be more than a little happy here; he’s already on 8 FPL points and could hit double figures if the bonus points fall his way. In a gameweek that has proved frustrating so far, the left-back’s potential haul could be game-changing to many a Fantasy manager, with the FPL cup also underway.

Stephane Sessegnon
Fielded up front alongside Nicklas Bendtner again, Sessegnon provided an assist for the Black Cats opener to follow his goal at QPR last week. He certainly seems to be benefitting from Martin O’Neill’s arrival- this is only the second time this season that Sessegnon has returned attacking points in back-to-back gameweeks. Pre-bonus, he sits on 75 FPL points, only 3 behind Seb Larsson, despite his previous inconsistencies.

Does everything think that yesterday's results (City, Chelsea and Liverpool draws) made it even more unlikely that RVP will be rested for Wolves today?

Whats the prognosis on Smalling? I heard tonsilitus - could be missing for a couple of weeks? Think Jones will be okay for Blackburn so Smalling is my only concern at the moment.

    for gallas thinkers

'arry- "Ledley was okay after the Chelsea game but this one has come around too quickly for him." (regarding norwich)

Kaboul meanwhile 75% chance of starting tonight.

10% chance gallas starts both in the dgw
    10% chance he starts neither
    80% chance he starts one

Yeah I'm gonna call that a one-off; can't feed the kids waiting for those days to bite you in the ass. Liverpool will be a snooze-a-thon, they'll muster one goal between them if they're lucky...add Gerrard to that mix and it muddles their offensive direction even more. The Dumbass (so-called King Kenny) will probably drop a Maxi for him too (at the expense of obvious non performers...take your pick...Downing???)

And I'd rather be playing Raylor for that game instead of Simpson...but yeah...wise up.

Me too, I don't quite understand why he would keep playing the likes of Arshavin over him; when we're never lucky enough to have lazy fodder like Arshavin injured in training. But then you would have to actually work hard at some point for that to happe

But yeah, I'm monitoring the situation, and think Ramsey gets rested for sure today, and Theo gets it next week. In a perfect world, AOC comes on for Theo after about 63 minutes tonight. And Arshavin for Gervinho in the 80th or so. I don't even wanna see the slow Joe Camel come on for RVP...he's just a farce of a player.

Who knows. If Shotton keeps his place in mid in front of Pennant, than with Woodgate injury record Wilko could/ should start against Wigan. The main problem according to me is that Stoke are winning now and TP wouldn't want to change a winning team

Well this gameweek has been something of a disappointment. Time to think about the DGW, I suppose.
    Current team is...

    Krul Vorm
    Jones Enrique Shotton Evans Naylor
    Nani Bale Silva Larsson Walters
    Ade RVP Sturridge

I'm thinking Lars and Walts out for Drenthe and Osman
Evans out for BAE next week for no hits.

Alternatively same two out for VdV (if fit) and a cheapie mid.

Highest scoring attacker is like saying you're the tallest in your group of dwarfs. That being said I'm still waiting for the traditional Everton push so you're wise to be inspecting there.

If he is truly in "the hole" which is always a doubt for any midfielder (other than his slowness Cahill) then this would change my opinion, but I've monitored their forums for the past few weeks and if he has taken of the stacked position of Cahill, I would be all for it. But last time I checked he was wide right and his physicality even there was not endeared by the fans. He always seems to get in the box though (not that Everton gets balls there that often). But he has clearly been smart enough to get his ass in place when Roy makes runs with the ball at his feet. I'd get him before Baines, even after this past GW, because Roy and Leon HAVE to track back for Moyes or its no play time. And I believe players have been disaffected by track-backs on failed Baines balls. they can't all be winners. Other points of hatred by Toffee fans as a FYI:

            Neville sucks
            Heitinga should play DM
Clearly they're playing with two DM
Stop putting in Distin for strikers in close games (see Everton v Arsenal)
            Play f*cking Barkley
            Moyes...grow a pair!

I don't think he will be, but that's just a hunch, he has to have some speed with brains out there that can score, outside of Valencia, but the Ji-Sung "the Matrix" Park emergence has me thrown a bit. I still think SAF has problems with his decision-making (aka selfish streak) in the final 1/3. I've actually thought of picking up Park for Mata to spring-board me into the DGW...Chelsea's form just look awful.

There is no logic behind RVP being dropped today. After today he has games on saturday and monday and there is no way he will play both.

Theres no chance Wenger will sit him down for 2 of the next 3 games.

My prediction - play today, rested home to QPR, play at Fulham.

Because he is lazy and in the big games he doesn't offer enough. Great ability but doesn't work for the team. It's easy scoring goals in 5 nil wins against Fulham & Wigan. He doesn't step up when it counts.

            bit harsh that.

even when Rooney was playing rubbish he was still getting chances. SAF has his preferences.

It's not harsh it's true. He scores most of his goals in big wins against inferior teams. In the big games you need to put a shift in and fight for the team and Berbatov doesn't do that. Even when Rooney isn't scoring or playing his best he works harder that anyone.

Yeah he's a bit of a short track bully, he's a slower, immensely better dribbling/shooting version of Hernandez. He's hard to describe, he's like that monster in movies that seems to always catch the girl even though she's running and he's limping...
His attitude I think rubs SAF the wrong way, although he's a great person off pitch, he looks like a douchebag on the pitch the way he thinks he's the coach directing people or it's always someone else's fault that a play misconnected.

imo, berba has the touch and vision as good as any top striker in the world.
I agree totally about rooneys work ethic, but surely a centre striker roll for berba with rooney in behind him would be perfect for united. last two games berba has played in they hav played much better and hence the 5-0 wins in both. i hate that comment about his work ethic, pardew says that about HBA but both players are fantastic skillful players and should be apart of anyones starting 11.

You hate the comment about work ethic? Play the game and realise that when a player swans about the pitch and not looking interested you will know what I mean. Some players are more gifted than others but in the modern game I don't think you can get away with a Cantona type anymore.

Look at Barcelona, the best team in the world with Messi the best player in the world and you will understand what I mean. They press the game, chase every ball, work back to support their team out and still play with more flair than anyone.

haha man i agree with you, i love barca (as a matter of fact went to barca mallorca 5-0 win 1month ago) saw messi score a hat trick in first 30 mins 😉 but all im saying is that you cant compare any other team in the world to barcelona, because they have a different philosophy on football and it will take clubs many years to catch up. simple question would you rather start berba or chicarito??

TBH, good example w/ Barca and bad example w/ Barca, bad because they outwork everyone on the pitch, and by that standard, clearly even a MF (expected to track back and defend more), a Frank Lampard would/should be out on his butt. I could name 8-10 other central strikers that don't play, 'the game' of pretending to bust their ass in that 30m x 40m rectangle of pitch they are expected to pressure the ball out of possession in. That being said, each year in the Premier league it becomes less and less important to the detriment. And La Liga (a weaker league in whole) it becomes more and more important.

The 4 that ended the game were:

          Valencia, Carrick, Evra, Fryers.

Ferdinand and Smalling may or may not be back, but I'd still back him to score in that game.

Smalling (or Valencia) Jones/Evans Ferdinand Evra will be the back 4 I am pretty sure, they aren't gonna have the same lineup against Newcastle as they did Wigan.

i bought studge 5 weeks ago, as for longterm.... i really don't know... for me everyones expendable apart from RPV, provided no injuries. I like to hold and be patient, hell i still have vdv (for the DGW mainly) but just dont want to miss a potential Ade goal bonanza

thanks guys appreciate the input, I gues Ba's form is just ridicilous at the moment, he is more of a focal point up fwd (as far as i can see, i'm no expert tho) than studge.. plus chelsea have more options spread over the fwd positions.. i mean, they have got Torres for cryin out load!!
      Ba to stay i feel.

just one thing. the ACON starts on Jan 21st.

i thought the players had to be available 2 weeks before. i know Mancini asked for the Toure Bros to go later, but not sure about Ba.

Dean, that has just thrown a BIG sydchrome spanner into a very fragile set of intermeshing gears.... this sort of info needs to be certified... or there could be lots of pain in watching precious points go down the gurgler.

Toure & Toure miss the Jan 16th game and they go LATER than the rest.....

Bale - Ade - BAE imo... better spread and that way you avoid Vdv's leg falling off.

Who do you fancy for a cup win?

    Him: 9 + Walcott

    Me: Vorm + Walker + N Taylor + Ade

    (sub = 6 if N Taylor doesn't play)
