Gameweek eighteen is brought to a close with our regular round-up. This time around, we assess an unstoppable Welshman, the shape-shifting talents of United’s title challenge and a tiring Dutchman’s failure to reach a Premier League milestone…

The Player

Given the freedom of Carrow Road, Gareth Bale was described as “unplayable” by Harry Redknapp, following the Welshman’s one-man demolition of Norwich on Monday. Redknapp must take his share of the praise for orchestrating the shift to a 4-2-3-1 system, a formation perhaps born out of the recent injury to Aaron Lennon which disrupted the harmony and balance the Tottenham midfield.

The solution was to bring Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart inside, allowing full-backs Kyle Walker and Benoit Assou-Ekotto to provide width down the flanks. The result – in Bale’s case, was simply devastating.

Bale popped up on both flanks on Monday night, but, more crucially, in central areas. It was his strong running down the centre that cut Norwich apart, their defence badly exposed to Bale’s pace and power. While opposition teams have been seen to double and even triple-mark Bale’s threat on the flank, his ability to drift inside made it almost impossible for Norwich to put up a barrier to repel his influence.

Bale is reveling in his free role, providing returns that have already surpassed previous seasons. The brace at Norwich took him to seven goals, and with six assists to his name, Bale has now emerged as a Fantasy talent of the highest pedigree, threatening David Silva and Nani at the top of the Fantasy Premier League midfield rankings.

With a double gameweek around the corner, Bale is surely an irresistible force right now. Potentially unstoppable, having broken the shackles of a role on the flank, there will be few defences equipped to resist his talent and very few Fantasy lineups who dare to go into January without Bale in their ranks.

The Team

A makeshift lineup, ravaged by defensive injuries and Sir Alex Ferguson’s need to rest and rotate, took to the field against Wigan and returned United’s second consecutive 5-0 win.

Dimitar Berbatov stole the headlines with his hat-trick, calmly stroking home the penalty to seal the match ball, with Wayne Rooney looking on, having been introduced once victory was assured. Frustratingly, Rooney came away with a blank after notching four goals in his previous three matches. Nani was also overshadowed – Antonio Valencia continuing his campaign to win a place in our midfields, with a goal and his sixth assist in four matches. The Ecuadorian will surely find an increased Fantasy ownership once the wildcard squad shuffle takes place in gameweek 21.

Elsewhere, the defence remains a slippery Fantasy asset. Only Patrice Evra has offered security in recent weeks. Anders Lindegaard appears to be caught in rotation with David De Gea; the back four is broken up by injuries to the extent that Michael Carrick started alongside Jonny Evans at the kick-off against Wigan. Evans was forced off at half-time with a calf strain, a setback that may deprive United of his services for a fortnight. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are expected to return against Blackburn to soften the blow, Rio Ferdinand won’t be far behind.

With goals and clean sheets readily available, confidence in United’s squad will surely only increase – Jones will come back into the equation, assured of a starting role thanks to a versatility that allows Ferguson to use him to fill the gaps across the defence and in midfield. Despite his injury, Evans will likely be held by his Fantasy owners, having emerged as the preferred option alongside Rio Ferdinand in the absence of Nemanja Vidic. Nani, Valencia and Rooney will go on attracting investment in attacking areas, as United close the gap on City, and enter a period of the season that, traditionally, has seen them shift through the gears.

The Talking Point

United’s team-sheet against the Latics was the most stinging example of rest and rotation on show from the Boxing Day programme, but there will be more to come.

Robin Van Persie is now the major concern the Fantasy managers. Having failed to score the goals required to reach Alan Shearer’s record for Premier League strikes in a calendar year in the 1-1 draw with Wolves, the Dutchman now looks vulnerable when QPR visit the Emirates on Saturday.

As Arsene Wenger ponders the merits of a deal to bring Thierry Henry back to North London, the backdrop for such a move is the theory that Van Persie is tiring, that his long-term fitness is at risk. Wenger has already made noises suggesting that a rest for his skipper is on the cards – emphasising that Shearer’s record has to be secondary to the good of the Arsenal cause over the campaign.

Fantasy managers are now left anxiously waiting to see how Wenger’s cards will fall. Having dropped points against Wolves, there is surely an urgency to earn three points against Neil Warnock’s side. Can Wenger go into that game without his skipper and have confidence that a win can be achieved?

It seems unlikely, but then Van Persie will surely be needed at Fulham three days later. If the striker is to be handed the rest that Wenger seems to feel he requires, then it will likely come on Saturday, frustrating thousands of Fantasy managers in the process.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Vorm, Hennessey
    Naylor, Simpson, Kompany, Enrique, Evans
    Nani, Silva, Bale, Walters, Dyer
    Sturridge, Adebayor, RvP
    £1,7M in bank

Want to start prepairing for the DGW, but not sure what I should do. One opportunity is Evans to either Jagielka or BAE, but then I'm without United covarge in the defence. Hennessey to Friedel or Howard is another possibility, but then I use a lot of my capital, and dont have many options for the next change. Walters-->Drenthe/Osman could also be a nice move.

    Any suggestions?

With Newcastle and Citeh coming "back-to-back" over the next week, I think Nani is a major rotation risk this weekend. Even if he plays, would be amazed if he gets more than 65 mins. Given Rooney's cameo appearance against Wigan, I'm thinking of giving him my armband this week...

I'd suggest Ba is in fine form too though Jack. Sturridge has scored more than one goal in a match only once this year, and Ba is more than capable of nabbing at least one against Liverpool and United. And I think he will also play the home game against QPR before leaving for ACON, and the WC is available by then. Just my reasoning in not using one of my transfers on getting him out...

I just looked at the captains Poll. With RVP a definite rotation risk, why are masses deciding to captain him..? On the same note, since Nani was taken off at the hour mark, he's so much more nailed on than RVP yes?

    Any thoughts gents?

I agree that Nani is fairly nailed on but I think RVP is fairly close, to be honest. However, even if he starts, if Arsenal go a couple of goals up, I am sure RVP will be off before the hour mark.

Sometimes the most obvious answer is the correct one, and not captaining him may be a case of overthinking things.

RVP is more nailed on than Nani I would think, because he is far more important to his team, and Arsenal didn't win their last game so really need the points here.

Also, after the Fulham game he can easily be rested against Leeds in the FA Cup, giving him a two week break, whereas Nani will likely be called upon against City.

Such a weird season with strikers - there's basically 6 - RPV, Rooney, Aguero, Ba, Sturridge and Adebayor... the rest are wildly inconsistent and it's the midfield'd that are delivering instead. For all the Scout's bigging up of Yakubu, he's famous for playing well for the first few months at a club and then going totally missing. Popping up now and then there's Agbonlahor.. Balotelli.. Suarez...

    Elsewhere we have;
Bent, Defoe, Hernandez - in and out with injuries..
Dzeko - lost form and no longer first pick
Drogba, Torres, Carroll, Saha, Zamora, Bendtner, Long, Odemwingie, Doyle, Crouch, Klasnic... and many many more all failing to deliver.

What the hell is going on? Where did all the strikers go? Given it's such a poor defensive season (clean sheets-wise anyway) ... what is happening?

Is it wide/floating attackers - such as Sturridge, Bale, Nani - who are now the only real threat in most matches?

Is it a lack of tactical flexibility such that we still invariably see one striker up against two powerful centre halves, so the real action is out wide?

hate to say it, but it's making the fantasy game a bit dull. All the fun is in the 'risks' - are Swansea going to carry on the run of clean sheets at home... which unheard of Norwich midfielder is going to scrore this week.. will Coyle turn Bolton around... is it worth a punt on Helguson/Graham/Holt/Yak if it means you can also have two or three from Silva/Nani/VDV/Lampard.. ?

Can't see the transfer window doing much either and with so few players at the African cup of nations it shouldn't have a big impact on the league.

    Sigh.

every active team is 70% similar, and the only different choice everyone is making is the armband.

Ah and I have Morison in my team too! I thought he might nick one against Spurs, nearly did too... still... since when do we all have to dig around the promoted clubs to find a striker?

          I just think it's strange.

You can see it with the transfer window as well - Spurs... Arsenal... Sunderland... have money to spend, desperate for a quality striker or two... but who's out there to buy with any level of confidence in getting a consistent return?... Podolski (maybe) and ???

    Repost from last page.

Can somebody have a quick butchers at my linked team and give their thoughts on my 2 proposed DGW plans. Should I do A or B

GW 19 – Ba to Ade

    and

    GW 20 – Verm to Walker (A)

    or

    GW 20 – Wilko to Walker (B)
    Walcott to Osman

    Many thanks

I'd say A because it involves getting Ade over Osman and you have a decent back line without Verm anyway.

I think I have written my post poorly. I am definitely doing Ba to Ade, it is whether I do Verm to Walker or the 4 point hit to bring in Osman and upgrade Wilkinson to Walker.

If you are getting rid of Silva, I would only do it for Valencia if the extra cash allows for a significant upgrade elsewhere. i.e mid price midfielder to Bale.

Otherwise just do Silva to Nani.

To be honest, it is hard to give proper advice without sight of your team.

Landan Donovan is in the UK after completing his loan move to Everton. He is inelligable to face West Brom but he IS ok to start the 1st game of the DGW against Bolton.

If you are basing your logic on the fact that one will be rested then I wouldn't change off RVP. Arsenal need the points so they can't afford to rest him imo.

If you are choosing Nani on the basis of expected points return then that's a personal call....I have stuck it of RVP!

Gareth Bale's price went up last night by 0.1.
Around 49,000 teams transferred him in during the gameweek up until last night.

Roughly how many more ' transfers in', this gameweek, would it take to put his price up another 0.1?

Caulker is a Spurs player too! ;-))

umm.. i think that's a pretty decent lineup, can see much room to move. Drenthe can be a risk.

I'm watching for Swansea to take a dive in the 2nd half of the season. This weekend against Spurs will be huge.. if they come out with a point then they could be in it for the season, if they lose it could all go downhill fast a la Blackpool.

At the same time I expect the traditionally more established teams Bolton and Blackburn to turn it around and start climbing the table. Blackburn need some defenders back. Bolton need some luck.
