Gameweek eighteen is brought to a close with our regular round-up. This time around, we assess an unstoppable Welshman, the shape-shifting talents of United’s title challenge and a tiring Dutchman’s failure to reach a Premier League milestone…

The Player

Given the freedom of Carrow Road, Gareth Bale was described as “unplayable” by Harry Redknapp, following the Welshman’s one-man demolition of Norwich on Monday. Redknapp must take his share of the praise for orchestrating the shift to a 4-2-3-1 system, a formation perhaps born out of the recent injury to Aaron Lennon which disrupted the harmony and balance the Tottenham midfield.

The solution was to bring Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart inside, allowing full-backs Kyle Walker and Benoit Assou-Ekotto to provide width down the flanks. The result – in Bale’s case, was simply devastating.

Bale popped up on both flanks on Monday night, but, more crucially, in central areas. It was his strong running down the centre that cut Norwich apart, their defence badly exposed to Bale’s pace and power. While opposition teams have been seen to double and even triple-mark Bale’s threat on the flank, his ability to drift inside made it almost impossible for Norwich to put up a barrier to repel his influence.

Bale is reveling in his free role, providing returns that have already surpassed previous seasons. The brace at Norwich took him to seven goals, and with six assists to his name, Bale has now emerged as a Fantasy talent of the highest pedigree, threatening David Silva and Nani at the top of the Fantasy Premier League midfield rankings.

With a double gameweek around the corner, Bale is surely an irresistible force right now. Potentially unstoppable, having broken the shackles of a role on the flank, there will be few defences equipped to resist his talent and very few Fantasy lineups who dare to go into January without Bale in their ranks.

The Team

A makeshift lineup, ravaged by defensive injuries and Sir Alex Ferguson’s need to rest and rotate, took to the field against Wigan and returned United’s second consecutive 5-0 win.

Dimitar Berbatov stole the headlines with his hat-trick, calmly stroking home the penalty to seal the match ball, with Wayne Rooney looking on, having been introduced once victory was assured. Frustratingly, Rooney came away with a blank after notching four goals in his previous three matches. Nani was also overshadowed – Antonio Valencia continuing his campaign to win a place in our midfields, with a goal and his sixth assist in four matches. The Ecuadorian will surely find an increased Fantasy ownership once the wildcard squad shuffle takes place in gameweek 21.

Elsewhere, the defence remains a slippery Fantasy asset. Only Patrice Evra has offered security in recent weeks. Anders Lindegaard appears to be caught in rotation with David De Gea; the back four is broken up by injuries to the extent that Michael Carrick started alongside Jonny Evans at the kick-off against Wigan. Evans was forced off at half-time with a calf strain, a setback that may deprive United of his services for a fortnight. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are expected to return against Blackburn to soften the blow, Rio Ferdinand won’t be far behind.

With goals and clean sheets readily available, confidence in United’s squad will surely only increase – Jones will come back into the equation, assured of a starting role thanks to a versatility that allows Ferguson to use him to fill the gaps across the defence and in midfield. Despite his injury, Evans will likely be held by his Fantasy owners, having emerged as the preferred option alongside Rio Ferdinand in the absence of Nemanja Vidic. Nani, Valencia and Rooney will go on attracting investment in attacking areas, as United close the gap on City, and enter a period of the season that, traditionally, has seen them shift through the gears.

The Talking Point

United’s team-sheet against the Latics was the most stinging example of rest and rotation on show from the Boxing Day programme, but there will be more to come.

Robin Van Persie is now the major concern the Fantasy managers. Having failed to score the goals required to reach Alan Shearer’s record for Premier League strikes in a calendar year in the 1-1 draw with Wolves, the Dutchman now looks vulnerable when QPR visit the Emirates on Saturday.

As Arsene Wenger ponders the merits of a deal to bring Thierry Henry back to North London, the backdrop for such a move is the theory that Van Persie is tiring, that his long-term fitness is at risk. Wenger has already made noises suggesting that a rest for his skipper is on the cards – emphasising that Shearer’s record has to be secondary to the good of the Arsenal cause over the campaign.

Fantasy managers are now left anxiously waiting to see how Wenger’s cards will fall. Having dropped points against Wolves, there is surely an urgency to earn three points against Neil Warnock’s side. Can Wenger go into that game without his skipper and have confidence that a win can be achieved?

It seems unlikely, but then Van Persie will surely be needed at Fulham three days later. If the striker is to be handed the rest that Wenger seems to feel he requires, then it will likely come on Saturday, frustrating thousands of Fantasy managers in the process.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

There was some Stoke fan around here who said that he doesn't expect him to continue much longer in the team. Apparently youngsters never do well at Stoke. He said that he is good as a short term pick only.

    Subs order correct?

    Vorm (Krul)
    Kompany, Enrique, Jones
    Silva, Nani, Bale, Drenthe
    Ada, Van Persie, Morison

    Subs: Simpson, Naylor, Reo-Coker

    The Newcastle/Swansea debate rages on!

    Also considering:

Silva > Dempsey (Or Larsson/Walters to leave some money in the bank)
    Morison > Sturridge

I really want Sturridge! Can I sacrifice having Silva or Nani?

On the 1st, I don't have Mata but even if I did I wouldn't be handing him the armband this week, too many other good options.

On the 2nd, I think he will struggle to score against both but wouldn't rule out him grabbing a peno over the course of the two games.

Risky, but if he continues through the middle, may reap rewards.

Personally, I rate the way Swansea play - the way they keep ball won't allow Tottenham to run riot. Only 3 goals conceded at home, only 1 against Utd tells a tale.

But hard to ignore the possibility given the chimp like one's form.

        True that, but when you look at the bigger teams they've played this season;
Chelsea/Man City put 4 past them, and Chelsea did it with 10 men.
Arsenal and United were in major form slumps at the time and Liverpool have struggled for goals all season.
I dunno if I am just trying to justify it though 😕
I fear rotation with Nani/RVP whereas Bale is nailed on, with Caulker out earlier in the season they didn't look as strong, and if Arshavin can score against them, surely Bale can too? 😀

True, but those thrashings were all away, at home they're a different proposition. And although they're stronger with Caulker, they managed 3 cleanies without him and only conceded 1 at the Liberty Stadium against Utd in the same period.

That said, Bale can definitely score against them but I guess its a matter of whether you think you may have greater Captaincy potential elsewhere in your team. With rotation risks, it'll be a minefield I'm sure, which makes Bale's near-certain 90mins attractive I know.

Not too sure on this whole knee jerking of JEVans out.. As the scout article says, he's the apparent 2nd choice CB pairing with Ferdinand now that Vidic is out. Plus, he's only out for '2 weeks', potentially back earlier. Personally, I'm sticking. Transferring him out after transferring him in only a couple of gw's ago seems mental. Its as good as taking a 4pt hit imo.

Whether you think Utd can keep cleanies with him involved, is a completely different matter of course..

For dgw, I agree, it'd be wise to get a Spurs def in no doubt (not so sure about Everton personally) but I suppose looking at my back line, JEvans isn't the most disposable if you assume he'll continue alongside Ferdinand in the meantime.

Personally, I'm looking at NTaylor > BAE.

    Hey guys,

Have a rather large problem this week of more than likely not being able to field a team this week. In defence i've got serious doubts with Wilko, Naylor and Evans; Midfield I have Ferguson and Nani who could very well be rested and up top i've same dilemma as most with the likelihood of RVP being rested too. I've only one transfer and only 0.1 in the bank. Was hoping to hold on to the transfer to have 2 for next week before the double. I would like to get some Tot defensive cover in, but with just one tranny it seems impossible.

Does anyone know what Wilko's injury status and his chance of starting? Is it just one of those weeks that I have to take a hit and even if I do it realistically means losing either Verm or Silva, neither of which i'm too keen on doing......Obviously if anyone has any bright ideas, i'd love to hear 'em.....Cheers

    Current team for this week:

    ..........................Vorm..........................

    Wilkinson..........Evans J.........Vermaelen

    Walters.........Bale...........Nani.........Silva

    Adebayor.........Sturridge.........Van Persie

    Krul / McAuley / Taylor N / Ferguson

I would take a risk and hope that wilko or naylor plays. Save your transfer. Your midfield and strikers are strong so u could still do well. Avoid a hit imo. Nxt week bring in one of walker or BAE and downgrade Walters to drenthe.

With Donovan able to play for Everton from GW20, what is there first 11 likely to be? 😕

    I'm guessing

    Howard
    Hibbert, Jags, Distin, Baines,
    Osman, Neville, Donovan, Drenthe,
    Cahill, Saha

Or have I missed someone out?

Cahill could possibly be dropped to the bench and Donovan pushed up in support of Saha.

I am having a bit of a mare with my team and need some advice.

    1) I spent a few weeks adjusting my team to fit Rooney in alongside RVP. The reason for this is that having both will act as a great differential over my rival as he would struggle to afford both. This didnt help last week, i took out Ba for Rooney who is now playing in midfield. Is this likely to continue? Im not up for a 12m midfielder taking up a striker position in my team, out and out strikers are too important this season.

    2) Why is Valencia out performing Nani even playing Left back?

    3) Is Jones fit or not? He is another expense that is sapping my team, especially as i have Richards and he is also 'injured'.

My team is linked, any comments or advice welcome. Getting dumped out of the cup first round and loosing yet more ground on my rival is ruining my life a little.

      1) i can see roo playing in mid field for the next 2 games. bad luck

2)i think he's only outscored him once or twice. nani shd get more points in the coming weeks though. not a huge thing to worry about.

3)no need to kick jones out now. he will definitely start. facial injuries or illness don't reoccur.

        Jones is worth holding.
United are so short in defence that if he is fit he will play.
& being able to play in midfield too means that he has a really good chance of playing OOP.

These are questions we'd all like the answers to.
Rooney is too expensive to risk in my opinion.
      RVP is essential up front.
Sturridge is excellent value for the performing Chelsea striker and has good fixtures.
Adebayor has a double game week coming up.
I can't look beyond those 3 for forwards at the moment.
Uniteds attacking points seem to come mostly from Nani & Valencia at the moment so I am going for one or both of them for united coverage, along with the ever presents Bale + Silva.

I think i will keep hold of rooney for 1 week and see. If it looks like he is wasting my money i will bring in Ade and upgrade a mid so i have Nani and Valencia i think or bring back VDV in the hope he does something.

I think they are sound transfers. I am a nani owner and if I was to ship him it would be for Valencia. I remember a few seasons ago Valencia was fpl gold. He was the assist machine and he is showing signs of that. The risk is that nani on his day can go mental. He can score a brace and grab an assist in any given match. Especially against a poor Blackburn side. But if your looking to accommodate sturridge in your side I think it looks good moves
