The giants are being cut down to size with alarming regularity. Bobby Zamora’s at the death volley, sweetly struck inside Wojciech Szczesny’s near post, was another blow applied to the Premier League’s big boys. This was just the latest in a line of recent upsets that have seen United, City and Chelsea lose to middle ground opponents as the New Year programme continued to provide Fantasy managers an unpredictable passage into 2012.

The Craven Cottage result also marked the end of another unremarkable day in Fantasy terms. Robin Van Persie again failed to deliver returns (it’s becoming a nasty habit now), ironically in a gameweek that will have seen thousands switch their attention, and their captain’s armbands, to double gameweek prospects in the Spurs and Everton ranks. With such slim pickings from Monday’s five games – the expectation on players form those two teams to produce is now weightier than ever.

Chelsea did at least make a recovery from the winding dished out by Villa at Stamford Bridge at the weekend. The Blues’ 2-1 win at Molineux today was a battle, a scrap that was missed by Didier Drogba and, more significantly, Daniel Sturridge.

We did at least get early warning of the striker’s potential absence and Chelsea have today confirmed that their leading scorer and Fantasy asset missed the midlands trip with a contusion to his hip – brusing in other words. His 16% ownership will be hoping that the timely break for FA Cup duty will be enough to see Sturridge make a return. Andre Villas-Boas has even indicated he could make the cup tie with Portsmouth. Regardless of his expected recovery time, with January wildcards fluttering, we’re already seeing an alarming decline in confidence.

Patience will be paper thin leading up to gameweek 21. With FPL managers handed the opportunity to refresh their squads, the dead wood will be shed. The trick of course, is to correctly identify those surplus to requirements – a Chelsea striker who has delivered well above his modest price tag and who is playing for a Euro 2012 spot, may not fall into this category. In ruthless times however, Sturridge has already become a casualty. Already he’s seen more sales in the gameweek than any other player.

Looking closer at the current FPL transfer trends – the likes of David Silva, Nani, Sergio Aguero, Ryan Taylor and even Jose Enrique are ranked at the very top of the transfers out right now. These players have been giants this season – consistent scorers who have served their Fantasy owners well. Let’s get this clear – these are transfers after the gameweek 20 deadline, they are not victims of the scramble for double gameweek assets but players cast aside, presumably as part of a wildcard shopping sprees inspired by another disappointing return.

The last few days have seen the Premier League elite humbled – clearly this has dented the confidence of some Fantasy managers. The thing about the Premier League’s best, however, is that once toppled, they do tend to get up again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Is anyone else looking at Dempsey for the WC? He is having a cracking season and thier fixtures look pretty good, its whether the 8.5 million is worth it?

He's one of the top scoring mids and priced accordingly. If you are wildcarding now I'd be bringing him in.
Actually I might bring him in for Silva this week.

He's definitely coming in on my WC - probably not until gw 23 - however, gw 22, 23 & 25 all home fixtures against beatable opposition.

I aim to get rid of Silva in my WC to. Much prefer Aguero.

But Osman is hardly an "attacking" player, and why would Moyes want to be defensive against Bolton at home? If they want to win, they surely need Drenthe to play.

Look through all those manager's histories and see how badly they've done in seasons gone by - they are not good FPL managers, they are there by luck right now. They will fall miles behind towards the end of the season, especially as more DGWs come and go.

    Ruddy Vorm

    McAuley Enrique Hibbert Shawcross Simpson

    Valencia Gerrard Bale Dempsey Moses

    Yakubu Van Persie Aguero

          Hi Evs,

I'm not a great fan of Evans to be honest but Fergie will have looked at the Blackburn game and realised that playing players out of position can come back and bite you hard.

Not decided on the timing of my WC, but may look at the same as you, particularly with an eye on Dempsey. Stoke (already have Etherington) and Sunderland players may be worth some investment, particularly defensively from gw 22 onwards.

            I agree JOMT.

Evans (in) - I have had Enrique and Kompany from Day 1 so will stick there.

In mid - I cant beleive I am thinking of Sess (again) but he looks good under MoN and decent games, Dempsey is a 100% for me and keeping Silva & Bale (who I had at 7.9m)

I will keep RVP (obvious) and bring in aguero. Unsure of final striker...

Will bring back in Kompany - had him originally, then swapped to Richards, then went to Vermaelen. Disaster.

All players you've mentioned I will bring in/keep. Larsson did really well for me early doors so may consider him, but Sessegnon is thriving again.

I was be kicked in the balls hard when I didn't have Silva, but I much prefer to have Aguero after the WC. Will look to offload Silva.

a good (GMT) morning to you all

It has struck me that these Jan. wildcards could be a real hindrance and the undoing of many solid teams. The midfield big-hitters are not pulling their weight at the moment...Nani, Silva, VDV...looks like better value at the mid-price at the moment...sess, dempsey, Valencia, Bale...same with the big-hitting forwards...rooney, RVP, aguero are, presently, hardly setting the world alight...whilst Ba, yakubu are tearing it up and other cheap forwards are performing well in relation to their price.

Hence, for this wildcard I'm seriously considering a fundamental change...a strong back four, a strong front 2 and mid-price elsewhere...

For example... friedal/given…Enrique, Richards, jones (caulker/simpsom)…valencia, Dempsey, sess, bale, moses…RVP, Aguero, Yakubu

I'm very tempted to wildcard now. If it wasn’t for my Tottenham players I would have registered just 1 goal (0 assists, 0 clean sheets) in the last 3 game-weeks (including this one)…a particularly depressing state of affairs 🙁 but I'm also conscious that festive results and performances may be just an anomaly and normal service will be resumed when the fixture load lightens, so it may be better to wait until the last moment to wildcard to stop the urge to tinker too much and to see if the situation changes???

    What are people’s thoughts??

I like you thinking, but surely Given is not worth the dough. Clean sheets are verrry hard to come by this year, but I don't agree with this doubling up on Swans/Newc players (not you). Richards is a good buy if he'll play every game, with attacking points aplenty. Not sold on Enrique, I think Skrtel is a better attacking threat. But yeah, could be a potentially disasterous time to wildcard if people flog all the marquee names, only for them to come good again in a few weeks. I nearly pulled the trigger on Silva for the DGW, but now I'm so glad I didn't. He's a very, very consistent if you look at his stats, just not the headline 10+ pts scorer like a Nani or Bale, every now and again.

Hi Andy...I would play Friedal most games in that combo...'Given' could be a value option for back-up, but so could Lindegaard or sorensen. I would tend to concur with Skrtel over Enrique too, but I got him at 5M so their is a value factor to consider...but you make a good point about defenders who get forward, you could perhaps add to the list Verm, Samba, Kompany, Baines etc. I also think your right about Silva...he is perhaps the 1 big hitting mid. to keep...might just wait it out a week or two...cheers for the input

Still busy with my WC team but you pretty much summed up my tactic. Only diference from team above is I have Silva in place of Sess, I do however still have Adebayor in place of Aguero which I am not too sure about.....especially as Adebayor is not eligable for GW22. Also have Vorm/Krul in goal.

I would say the status quo will resume soon. The mid priced players don't tend to be constant scorers over the course of a season. The safest thing to do would surely be to wait and see what signings come in to mix things up a bit.

If you look at City's fixtures from GW24 onwards and then consider that Euro rotation shouldn't be a threat for their big players, you've got to fancy Silva + Aguero to be 2 of the leading point scorers for the rest of the season. I'll be basing my team around Kompany - Silva - Aguero.

Don't let it burn a hole in your pocket. It may come in handy. Do you need Baines? Not good value IMO. Downgrade him, and pump Walters up to Mata? There are a few options mate

You must be crazy not to have City attackers! They have the best fixtures for the next few weeks barring the Spurs game. City will be fired up after 2 blanks.

Use the 1.9 to upgrade Ade to Aguero (I'm not gonna push you on Silva)
or Walters / Dempsey to Silva (if you have funds)

Looking to Gwk 21... Barring injury or ban. Should I keep playing 3-4-3 or going 4-3-3 ? My normal rule is to play MF, but also want to know what you think... Osman (avl) or Simpson (QPR) ?

    Krul
    Jones - Enrique - BAE - ?
    Nani - Bale - Silva - ?
    RvP - Studge - Ade

to any planning to wc the final gw of the january window-

    starting gw 24:

Invest in City-(FUL, av, BLA, BOL) aguero/silva/one of richards or kompany looks vital
Invest in Newcastle (AV, tot, WOL, SUN) keeping krul/defender if you have him seems logical, cabaye a good mid-priced shout, keep a spot easy to transfer ba in.
Invest in Stoke (SUN, ful, SWA, NOR) Im looking at huth definitely, maybe walters, maybe double up defense.
Wigan have a nice run for cheap bench options (EVE, bol, AV, SWA, nor, WBA) im looking at al-habsi, moses for sure.
as do QPR (WOL, bla, FUL, EVE, bol) maybe helguson or gabbidon for bench options.

many of the top clubs have tough fixtures, which is why loading up on city is vital...

Spurs (liv, NEW, ars, MU, eve)
    United (che, LIV, nor, tot)
    Pool (TOT, mu, EVE, ARS)

chelsea have a nice 4 game run after MU, then city and spurs, so perhaps one of mata/sturridge would suffice.

helpful? i just e-mailed this to myself anyway.

But if City get to the Carling Cup final, or whatever it's called these days, won't they be missing one of those juicy fixtures? But I think we'll know before we WC if we wait until GW 24 anyways.

interesting Fuzzy...I'm certainly leaning towards the City triumvirate...Silva, Aguero, Richards/Kompany...with Newcastle I'd prefer the mercurial HBA, cheaper than Cabaye, playing OOP, starting to improve after a very long injury hiatus and Pardew has suggested he will be given a good run once Ba departs to collect ACORNS...Huth looks an inspired choice too...good post, thanks man

    I currently have 2 FTs

thinking of Krul + Wilkinson > Sorensen + Evans, is there a better transfer to be done? Was thinking of using lingegaard as a second goalie for when he plays

GW 21 Team will look like:

    ____________Sorensen______________

    Evans________BAE__________Richards

    Mata____Silva_______Nani_______Bale

    Sturridge______RVP__________Adebayor

    Subs:

    ___Vorm___Moses___Simpson__Caulker

    Thanks guys

Decided on transfers for next week.

Was going to do Drenthe > Dempsey

But just realised could do Shawcross > Kelly
    Gower > Dempsey

    Leaving with

    Vorm, Krul
    Jones, Jagielka, BAE, Shotton, Kelly
    Nani, Bale, Dempsey, Walters, Drenthe
    RVP, Adebayor, Sturridge

Would like to avoid the hit, but would leave the team stronger overall I reckon?

Why is everyone saying that Fulham are looking good right now? They only had one good half against Arsenal. Just 10 days ago they lost to United 5:0. Two draws against poor Chelsea and Norwich is not a big achievement either. I'd say they are playing very average right now with short surges and downfalls.
