The giants are being cut down to size with alarming regularity. Bobby Zamora’s at the death volley, sweetly struck inside Wojciech Szczesny’s near post, was another blow applied to the Premier League’s big boys. This was just the latest in a line of recent upsets that have seen United, City and Chelsea lose to middle ground opponents as the New Year programme continued to provide Fantasy managers an unpredictable passage into 2012.

The Craven Cottage result also marked the end of another unremarkable day in Fantasy terms. Robin Van Persie again failed to deliver returns (it’s becoming a nasty habit now), ironically in a gameweek that will have seen thousands switch their attention, and their captain’s armbands, to double gameweek prospects in the Spurs and Everton ranks. With such slim pickings from Monday’s five games – the expectation on players form those two teams to produce is now weightier than ever.

Chelsea did at least make a recovery from the winding dished out by Villa at Stamford Bridge at the weekend. The Blues’ 2-1 win at Molineux today was a battle, a scrap that was missed by Didier Drogba and, more significantly, Daniel Sturridge.

We did at least get early warning of the striker’s potential absence and Chelsea have today confirmed that their leading scorer and Fantasy asset missed the midlands trip with a contusion to his hip – brusing in other words. His 16% ownership will be hoping that the timely break for FA Cup duty will be enough to see Sturridge make a return. Andre Villas-Boas has even indicated he could make the cup tie with Portsmouth. Regardless of his expected recovery time, with January wildcards fluttering, we’re already seeing an alarming decline in confidence.

Patience will be paper thin leading up to gameweek 21. With FPL managers handed the opportunity to refresh their squads, the dead wood will be shed. The trick of course, is to correctly identify those surplus to requirements – a Chelsea striker who has delivered well above his modest price tag and who is playing for a Euro 2012 spot, may not fall into this category. In ruthless times however, Sturridge has already become a casualty. Already he’s seen more sales in the gameweek than any other player.

Looking closer at the current FPL transfer trends – the likes of David Silva, Nani, Sergio Aguero, Ryan Taylor and even Jose Enrique are ranked at the very top of the transfers out right now. These players have been giants this season – consistent scorers who have served their Fantasy owners well. Let’s get this clear – these are transfers after the gameweek 20 deadline, they are not victims of the scramble for double gameweek assets but players cast aside, presumably as part of a wildcard shopping sprees inspired by another disappointing return.

The last few days have seen the Premier League elite humbled – clearly this has dented the confidence of some Fantasy managers. The thing about the Premier League’s best, however, is that once toppled, they do tend to get up again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Scouts report on shay given under injuries & bans:

Hamstring injury Club confirmed on 5/12 he will be sidelined for a month with a hamstring tear. Reported on 23/12 that he was making good progress but the club were still reluctant to put a timeframe on his return.

Its 3/1 now. its already been about a month since the 5/12 report. He's dropped to 4.7 at this point, more than halfway to another drop.

so im thinking by the time i plan to use my wc, villas first game will be on 5/2. thats still a month away, and a full month more (twice as long) than the original diagnosis. thinking he should be back by then and will be priced at 4.6, maybe even 4.5. He's able to drop so far below his original 5.0 because so many started the season with him I suppose.

so i haven't heard his name around these parts in a while, what say you on this? was a preseason value favorite at 5.0, surely 4.5-4.6 has to be tantalizing?

With next few game weeks in mind...

    1. Agbon > Morison (or)
    2. Jagielka > 4.1 Def

Need to free up some dosh to bring in Dempsey.. Option 1 does seem like a smart choice but only brought Agbon in last wk and want to give him a few wks before he gets the boot again... Bringing Morison in will also give me less benching headaches...

    Thoughts appreciated..!

Presume you're looking for value; where do you see the money to be made?

Yak perhaps? Tot players I'd imagine too but most already have 3 of them. I was set on WCing this week, but most seem to be holding off which will limit the rises/falls a bit.

If I make 2 transfers today for a -4, to catch a couple of players before their price rises, then decide to wildcard just before GW21, does the wildcard cancel the -4.

    Appreciate some help.

so because one of the top coaches in the world told the press the truth....that he realizes the importance of his captain and his leader RVP....and that if he hinted at one notion of fatigue he would rest him.....yet doesn't because this world-class player and leader took it upon himself to not only try for the goal scoring record but wants to lead his team to victory....your pissed and happy they loose? what loyalty do you speak of mate...you don't deserve him on your team earning you all these points.

Partially happy with my decision to trade Sturridge for Saha at the moment, my bench coverage is awful and atleast Saha still has the opportunity to do something, well 2 opportunities in effect!

Everyone keeps bringing this up.... all you've got to do is look through those manager's final rankings from seasons gone by to realise that none of them are any good at FPL, they're just there by luck at the moment. Come the end of the season, they will have fallen miles back, especially when a load more DGW's have been and gone.

    Hi all,

Like most of you souls my thoughts are turning to using the wildcard. Not going to activate it just yet mind, just bouncing some thoughts about.

I'd like to look at things from a different angle. So, thoughts on the cheap 5th defender & midfielder if you would. Small, but important caveat - must be nailed on starters.

    Defender; Caulker
    Senderos

    Midfielder; Gower.
    Romeu.

My issue with Lindegaard is that he basically waste 1 of the 3 MU player slots. Not really a problem at the moment, but when MU hit form or get an easy DGW, you might regret not being able to go Jones / Nani / Rooney, for example.

I look at Swansea's fixtures and keep considering dropping Vorm, but he keeps bringing home the bacon. I honestly think I'm just going to keep playing Vorm week in week out, and bring in the cheapest guarnanteed starter I can find for the bench, who I think is Ruddy.

I am using the Vorm/Ruddy combo at present - the weeks I deviated away from Vorm I got my fingers burnt, so I now have the easiest decision in the world - play Vorm every week.

Didn't expect the Swans to come away with a win, never a mind a clean sheet yesterday, so that result can only boost their previously poor away form. Fixtures aren't great until gw25 to be honest but he will get you save points if nothing else.

Having Lindegard also puts you in a position whereby you will start him every week and when he's rotated you have Vorm has back up; that can be a frustrating tactic because it takes your control away and sometimes you could be faced with a lack of an United cleansheet when the Swans get one. Sticking with Vorm every week and have an equally cheap back-up seems the best way forward.

ive been thinking about doing something a little different spending a good bit on one goalie play him every week and buy the cheapest goal keeper i can get my hands on it should free up funds could be the difference in having someone like RVP or a 3rd big striker

The likes of Mignolet - nailed on starter? Fine at 4.3.

Well, I went against my morales and WC last night. As a result, 0.3m added to the value of my team, so reasonably happy

    Ruddy Vorm

    McAuley Enrique Hibbert Shawcross Simpson

    Valencia Gerrard Bale Dempsey Moses

    Yakubu Van Persie Aguero

Seem ok? Thinking Hibbert >> J.Evans if he's fit, but will keep an eye on it

Are the Mata owners still keeping him or getting rid? He's such an incredibly frustrating player to own and his returns definitely don't justify his price right now but Chelsea's fixtures are pretty good right now. What do you guys think?

Got rid. He is Chelseas heartbeat, a bit like Modric for Spurs, but not brilliant in FPL terms. Yet. Next season i'll be starting with him

You don't need anyone from Chelsea as long as AVB is there 😉

Mata is a great player but AVB's tactics kills him.
