The giants are being cut down to size with alarming regularity. Bobby Zamora’s at the death volley, sweetly struck inside Wojciech Szczesny’s near post, was another blow applied to the Premier League’s big boys. This was just the latest in a line of recent upsets that have seen United, City and Chelsea lose to middle ground opponents as the New Year programme continued to provide Fantasy managers an unpredictable passage into 2012.

The Craven Cottage result also marked the end of another unremarkable day in Fantasy terms. Robin Van Persie again failed to deliver returns (it’s becoming a nasty habit now), ironically in a gameweek that will have seen thousands switch their attention, and their captain’s armbands, to double gameweek prospects in the Spurs and Everton ranks. With such slim pickings from Monday’s five games – the expectation on players form those two teams to produce is now weightier than ever.

Chelsea did at least make a recovery from the winding dished out by Villa at Stamford Bridge at the weekend. The Blues’ 2-1 win at Molineux today was a battle, a scrap that was missed by Didier Drogba and, more significantly, Daniel Sturridge.

We did at least get early warning of the striker’s potential absence and Chelsea have today confirmed that their leading scorer and Fantasy asset missed the midlands trip with a contusion to his hip – brusing in other words. His 16% ownership will be hoping that the timely break for FA Cup duty will be enough to see Sturridge make a return. Andre Villas-Boas has even indicated he could make the cup tie with Portsmouth. Regardless of his expected recovery time, with January wildcards fluttering, we’re already seeing an alarming decline in confidence.

Patience will be paper thin leading up to gameweek 21. With FPL managers handed the opportunity to refresh their squads, the dead wood will be shed. The trick of course, is to correctly identify those surplus to requirements – a Chelsea striker who has delivered well above his modest price tag and who is playing for a Euro 2012 spot, may not fall into this category. In ruthless times however, Sturridge has already become a casualty. Already he’s seen more sales in the gameweek than any other player.

Looking closer at the current FPL transfer trends – the likes of David Silva, Nani, Sergio Aguero, Ryan Taylor and even Jose Enrique are ranked at the very top of the transfers out right now. These players have been giants this season – consistent scorers who have served their Fantasy owners well. Let’s get this clear – these are transfers after the gameweek 20 deadline, they are not victims of the scramble for double gameweek assets but players cast aside, presumably as part of a wildcard shopping sprees inspired by another disappointing return.

The last few days have seen the Premier League elite humbled – clearly this has dented the confidence of some Fantasy managers. The thing about the Premier League’s best, however, is that once toppled, they do tend to get up again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I've looked at a few wildcard teams on here and most of them are no better than the sides the players already have, give or take one or two transfers.

I looked earlier at who I would change and most of it was my bench. I'll hold on a bit longer.

      Yes, good point.

My season feels very rudderless the last weeks and I have absolutely no idea what to do. WC now? Be patient? Scrap my team completely? Spend a lot in defence? Nani or Valencia? Silva or Aguero? May be neither?

I wanted to be patient but with all the price changes that will happen over the next couple of weeks i might WC tonight. Trouble is, my team is in pretty good shape for the next GW already. If it looks like you'll lose value - i'd do it now.

I'm having a rough few weeks as well but it's gonna happen.

I think the whole cheap or expensive defenders arguement is poor. Just pick the players you think can score well regardless of position,

How is the 4-3-3 formation been working for you?

I'm thinking of adopting this policy most weeks after the WC. Try and nail some CSs at least because I'm not getting far with attacking returns.

Not made any difference to be honest. Had poor scores with it and would have had poor scores 3-4-3.

Not had much luck with it either. First week J Evans booked and injured (0 points) but man u clean sheet. Second week same story with Vermaillen and Arsenal.

            They play in different positions.
            Is Sturridge better than Cech?

Sturridge is a goalscorer, the most difficult job in football, and he's doing it better than anyone in that team.

You´re insane...and a Chelsea fan? If I were a supporter...big if, I think he would be the player in my top 3; but could never be the, "best player we have", because it always has to be him. Too selfish, unreformably selfish...and I know what you're going to say, 'he's a striker, he's supposed to be'. Wrong, he's a winger and he has other jobs to perform out on the pitch. The best players aren't subbed off for tactical reasons when their team is down. That's happened under other different leadership as well...

I am going to wildcard next week anyway to get Rooney in for Bolton at home and 3 tot at home to wolves; but I am wondering whether to do it this week instead to gain a lot of value and because I might not be able to do it next week because of players rising/falling.

    Current:

    Vorm Krul
    Hibbert AssouEkotto Enrique Brown Shotton
    Nani Bale Silva ReoCoker Johnson
    RVP Rooney Adebayor

    Wildcard:

    Vorm Sorenson
    Jones Kompany Enrique Caulker Kelly
    Nani Bale Dempsey Sessegnon Moses
    RVP Sturridge Aguero

    What would you do?

Sure he *might* ... he's a former top-three striker in the world, playing for Arsenal. He's proven in the PL and last valued around 14.0

Look at the value over-inflation in general and then forwards: Torres, Hernandez, Bent. He could easily score as much as the last two ... and more than Torres has scored in 18 months.

Even with that tres chic 'in exile' beard he's been sporting?

        Yeah, me too.

Here's a secret about Henry back in the day ... he had players passing him the ball.

This cunning defeat ManU had to Blackburn would appear to reaping dividends. Points being dropped, false senses of security abundant, Alex doesn't make mistakes. Except for De Gea, Bebe, Veron & Taibi.

What logic do you see there? He was a rotation risk as well!
