Shay Given returns to training for Aston Villa but is warned he may face a battle to regain the number one spot. Mick McCarthy rolls out a Wolves injury update, Thierry Henry praises Arsenal’s fitness coach and Paul Lambert hails the recent displays of Dani Ayala.

Shay Given has returned to first-team training for Aston Villa ahead of this weekend’s trip to Everton. The Irishman – whose FPL price has dropped to 4.7- has been missing since gameweek 14, when he was forced off at Old Trafford after picking up a hamstring strain. Despite Given’s impressive form earlier this season, Alex McLeish has revealed he may not walk straight back into the Villa first-team, with Brad Guzan impressing in his absence:

He (Given) has made great progress. He is training with the group and it’s a case of how sharp he’s feeling and how confident he’s feeling before we make a decision about him coming back into the team. There are no guarantees of that obviously because of the way Brad has played. Brad has been fantastic.

Reports suggest Gary Cahill’s proposed move to Chelsea could be completed later on today. Both Chelsea and Bolton have already agreed a fee for the centre-half’s services and with personal terms being hammered out, it seems the deal is imminent.

Paul Lambert has hailed the recent displays of Dani Ayala after the defender returned from a three month injury period. The summer signing from Liverpool picked up a knee problem back in August but came back into the first-team in gameweek 19 and has subsequently started the Canaries last three games in all competitions. Lambert also lavished praise on Zak Whitbread, perhaps suggesting the pair could forge a partnership in the heart of Norwich’s defence in the second half of the season for the Carrow Road outfit:

I am delighted with Dani. It is great for him at his age now to be getting regular first-team football and becoming more comfortable playing in front of big crowds. He is going to have a massive future in the game. Zak is another quality player. He has been a bit unlucky with injuries here but every time he has played he looks really accomplished. I think Dani and him look capable of playing really well together.

The festive period has hit a number of clubs hard for injuries over the last couple of weeks and Wolves are no exception. Yesterday saw Mick McCarthy give an update ahead of the club’s trip to Tottenham this weekend. Steven Fletcher and Dave Edwards are expected to shake off ankle and groin problems respectively, while skipper Roger Johnson looks likely to recover from an ankle issue. McCarthy revealed Jamie O’Hara is progressing well from hernia surgery and Jody Craddock is expected to return to training this week.

Thierry Henry has thanked Arsenal fitness coach Tony Colbert for his role in the Frenchman’s headline-grabbing return to the Emirates. Henry, of course, came on as a sub in Monday night’s win over Leeds and the forward admitted he is far from fully match-fit:

You always think that you can still do a job, but whether or not you do always remains to be seen. I just said to Tony Colbert, ‘look, you have to get me ready’, and he did. I am nowhere near a 90-minute game but he did everything for me to be able to help.

Alan Tate will turn out for Swansea reserves this afternoon as he steps up his recovery from a broken leg. The defender picked up the injury in a bizarre golf buggy crash and has failed to feature since gameweek 1; he could be set to push Neil Taylor for a run at left-back, though Taylor is regarded as the club’s number one choice for the position.

West Brom could welcome back a host of players from injury ahead of this weekend’s game against Norwich. Shane Long, Paul Scharner and Youssuf Mulumbu have all returned to training, while Jonas Olsson, Jerome Thomas and Gareth McAuley are close to a comeback.

Nyron Nosworthy has joined Watford on a permanent deal from Sunderland. The defender has been on loan at the Championship side since October and, with his contract at the Stadium of Light expiring at the end of the season, joins up at Vicarage Road on a three-year, undisclosed deal.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Hate the fact I want to use my wildcard but would hate the couple of people who are waiting to use theirs to put in my good value differentials once they see them.

On another note- Mata & Aguero or Silva & Torres (he will come good now he nailed on)

These pages seriously need a bigger post limit, it's annoying.

    Bale Valencia Nani Osman Walters.

If I ship Osman out I’ll have 7.4 to spend on his replacement…. thinking for the next 3 GWs.

Sess/Larsson spring to mind as they’ll be good for GW22 and GW23.
    What about Ramires?

    Lindegaard (Hart)
    Richards Skrtel Santon McAuley* (Senderos)
    Valencia Bale Dempsey (HBA)(McClean)
    RVP Rooney(c) Yakubu
*Doubtful but Ben Arfa comes on if not fit.

GW21, 22 transfers dependant on tonight and this weekends results 🙂

Reposting (got lost on last page):

Does this WC team look good together?
    Krul, Mignolet
    Richards, Jevans, Williamson, Senderos, Shotton
    Bale, Demps, Silva, Sess, HBA
    RvP, Kun, The Yak

Defenders rotate well (assuming they’ll play), HBA and Sess rotate well too.
If Silva is out for few weeks, I’ll get Valencia or Milner.
Will probably do Yak, HBA -> Ba, someone cheap (if Ba is still on fire after ACON)

Only 0.3 in the bank to help fund Ba.

Looks good. Should score well, some people will say this though:

Shotton - not a certain starter
      Mignolet - position under threat
      Jevans - rotation risk
Silva - a doubt (I think swapping for Valencia is a good idea)
      HBA - Unproven so far

As its my 1st FPL season I have no idea about it but have the teams been always been this generic in the previous seasons ??

Everyone has atleast 7-8 similar starting 11..

When I started it was my 11 vs friends 11 but now we all have almost the same team..

Plus sometimes having to hope for my rival clubs to win really makes me cringe/angry..

Generally speaking the WC teams that get posted on this site always look fairly similar at any given point in time, but that generic team slowly evolves over the course of a 2 week gameweek, I'm sure a psychologist would have a few things to say about the phenomenon.

teams may look generic here because the most sensible advice will be collected into one squad.

in the real world (the FPL mini-leagues) most people won't have this knowledge/insight and will have more random teams.

I know what you mean about rival clubs. As most people on here take Fantasy pretty seriously my policy of not having any Tottenham players (as I'm a Gooner) is frowned upon and even mocked. But I just can't bring myself to even look at a Tottenham shirt on my team, let alone be pleased about a Spurs player scoring a goal. When I first started this a few seasons ago I didn't have any Man U, Liverpool or Chelsea either. I soon changed my mind about those though! But you have to draw the line somewhere and I drew it at Shite Hart Lane.

Completely agree with Kompany and Mancini who made the point that sometimes a red card is given for nothing. There is such a lack of consistency with refs it is virtually pot luck as to whether cards are given or not

    Moment of truth tonight.

    Ekotto, Bale (C), Adebayor, Drenthe

Need to get more than 9 points including the bonus, to beat my cup opponent.

If Drenthe doesn’t play a minute Shotton comes off the bench for 4 points.

I don't mind if Drenthe plays, but if he does, at least play 60mins and don't get booked please.

The others "should" be capable of doing the job between the 3 of them. I'd be surprised if Drenthe plays and has no goal involvement.

Jagielka is the biggest shame to be out, as I would have had most angles covered then!

What is your preferred formation going forward guys, when looking at WC squad.

It seems most play with a front 3, but when you look at the stats it would seem the mid priced midfielders are offering more value than a mid priced forward (BA excluded!).

Therefore does it make sense to go with a real cheap 3rd forward as a sub and have a 5th playing mid priced Midfielder, rather than vice versa?

    ie: Graham & Sessegnon (11.1m / 161pts ) over Sturridge & Moses (12.2m / 145pts)

so logic with that, i was going with
      2 6mill+ defenders and 3 cheapie,
      1 10.5+ mill, 2 6-19.5mill and 2 cheapie who rotate midfielders
      2 10mill+ & 1 mid priced forwards

Which Newcastle defender should I have? I got Raylor in early, so he's worth 4.8 to me right now, the other options are of course Simpson at 4.4 and Santon at 4.2. I've seen most people with Simpson in their team, but thus far Raylor has been the most productive, he's been nailed on, and looks like he could move to midfield now. Isn't the .4 worth it if he'll be OOP?

I don't think I'd be able to use the .4 elsewhere anyway, so its really a matter of having it in the bank with Simpson/Santon or having Raylor and nothing in the bank.

Don't bother with Welbeck - that's a transfer waiting to happen.

Same for Hilario - I don't think Spurs' fixtures are good enough for the next 8 or 9 to warrant playing Friedel every week - I'd rotate 2 x cheaper ones. Sorenson & Mignolet?

I like Gerrard in there. I'll give it 10/15.
