Shay Given returns to training for Aston Villa but is warned he may face a battle to regain the number one spot. Mick McCarthy rolls out a Wolves injury update, Thierry Henry praises Arsenal’s fitness coach and Paul Lambert hails the recent displays of Dani Ayala.

Shay Given has returned to first-team training for Aston Villa ahead of this weekend’s trip to Everton. The Irishman – whose FPL price has dropped to 4.7- has been missing since gameweek 14, when he was forced off at Old Trafford after picking up a hamstring strain. Despite Given’s impressive form earlier this season, Alex McLeish has revealed he may not walk straight back into the Villa first-team, with Brad Guzan impressing in his absence:

He (Given) has made great progress. He is training with the group and it’s a case of how sharp he’s feeling and how confident he’s feeling before we make a decision about him coming back into the team. There are no guarantees of that obviously because of the way Brad has played. Brad has been fantastic.

Reports suggest Gary Cahill’s proposed move to Chelsea could be completed later on today. Both Chelsea and Bolton have already agreed a fee for the centre-half’s services and with personal terms being hammered out, it seems the deal is imminent.

Paul Lambert has hailed the recent displays of Dani Ayala after the defender returned from a three month injury period. The summer signing from Liverpool picked up a knee problem back in August but came back into the first-team in gameweek 19 and has subsequently started the Canaries last three games in all competitions. Lambert also lavished praise on Zak Whitbread, perhaps suggesting the pair could forge a partnership in the heart of Norwich’s defence in the second half of the season for the Carrow Road outfit:

I am delighted with Dani. It is great for him at his age now to be getting regular first-team football and becoming more comfortable playing in front of big crowds. He is going to have a massive future in the game. Zak is another quality player. He has been a bit unlucky with injuries here but every time he has played he looks really accomplished. I think Dani and him look capable of playing really well together.

The festive period has hit a number of clubs hard for injuries over the last couple of weeks and Wolves are no exception. Yesterday saw Mick McCarthy give an update ahead of the club’s trip to Tottenham this weekend. Steven Fletcher and Dave Edwards are expected to shake off ankle and groin problems respectively, while skipper Roger Johnson looks likely to recover from an ankle issue. McCarthy revealed Jamie O’Hara is progressing well from hernia surgery and Jody Craddock is expected to return to training this week.

Thierry Henry has thanked Arsenal fitness coach Tony Colbert for his role in the Frenchman’s headline-grabbing return to the Emirates. Henry, of course, came on as a sub in Monday night’s win over Leeds and the forward admitted he is far from fully match-fit:

You always think that you can still do a job, but whether or not you do always remains to be seen. I just said to Tony Colbert, ‘look, you have to get me ready’, and he did. I am nowhere near a 90-minute game but he did everything for me to be able to help.

Alan Tate will turn out for Swansea reserves this afternoon as he steps up his recovery from a broken leg. The defender picked up the injury in a bizarre golf buggy crash and has failed to feature since gameweek 1; he could be set to push Neil Taylor for a run at left-back, though Taylor is regarded as the club’s number one choice for the position.

West Brom could welcome back a host of players from injury ahead of this weekend’s game against Norwich. Shane Long, Paul Scharner and Youssuf Mulumbu have all returned to training, while Jonas Olsson, Jerome Thomas and Gareth McAuley are close to a comeback.

Nyron Nosworthy has joined Watford on a permanent deal from Sunderland. The defender has been on loan at the Championship side since October and, with his contract at the Stadium of Light expiring at the end of the season, joins up at Vicarage Road on a three-year, undisclosed deal.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I've got Rvp Rooney and Aquero up top now. Still managed to keep a decent team, depends on your value though.

      Lindegaard/Vorm
      Kompany/Evans/Senderos/Simpson/Naylor
      Silva/Dempsey/Walters/Sess/Moses
      Rvp/Rooney/Aquero

I could still change it round though..

Kelly not guaranteed to start with Baird or even Hughes making an appearance at RB. Also Blackburn have seemed good for a goal in every game so doubleing up could return 4 points from your 2 players. What about Shotton, Caulker as an alternative for one of them.

cheers for the advice, was thinking Shotton, but has Liverpool and Man UTD coming up (well Liverpool hardly scoring to many). Caulker is a good option, but similarly hard fixtures, but i suppose better player to have as he more likely to start

PERSONAL ADVERT BINGO: TICK THESE OFF AS YOU SEE THEM IN FFS!

[ ] Really tough GW! Lowest score of my season - just 63 🙁 Is that average?

[ ] Massive dilemma guys. I can't decide who to captain - RVP? Rooney? Aguero? Silva? Mata? Jones? Baines? Totally stuck can someone help me, I'm spoilt for choice!

[ ] Just got into the top 5000 - 7th green arrow in a row - was doing better last year though :/

[ ] BAE and Valencia rising just took my team value to a formidable 111.5m. What's everyone else on?

[ ] It's so annoying! I pick all these good differentials and all my minileague rivals copy me! I'm going to stop posting and linking my team here, I think they read this site. Sorry guys.

If you can afford it it's an option. TBH the rotation checker lists Spurs as only the 11th best rotation - you'll have to play 5 matches away. But if the CS chance is better may be worth it. Personally every penny counts so I'm going NEW/FUL/STO/SUN or MUN/NEW/STO/FUL which work out optimal if you use the ticker.

So its probably been discussed a hundred times but im stuck between Rooney and Aguero. Cant get rid of Van Persie or Sturridge as id loose 1.2mil on them and it would just be plain stupid really. Currently have Rooney in. Im hoping hel come good but Aguero is tempting and would allow me extra funds. Might just leave Rooney till after the bolton game and assess then.

there was a good post by chill pill the other day about the prospectof switching between rooney and aguero depending on fixtures. It has some merit. Aguero is not great away and this week Rooney has the plum fixture.

This mix and match technique is certainly something I'm considering.

So in conclusion...no he's not essential, but pretty handy when Man City are at home.

Richards nailed on for the next 2 PL games, either at RB or CB. I could change Kolarov to Lescott (who's nailed on in Kolo Toure's absence) or Zabaletta. Kolarov's FK threat would be great to have if the remainder of your defenders can soak up the odd game he doesn't play.

Could change Caulker to Brown, but not heard news on when he's back. Caulker is a bargain at the price.

Really good insight on the defensive rotation, Isacki. Many thanks for this. Abhishek, of course, liked your work so much that he claimed it for himself:

    possible wildcard:

    Vorm* - Mignolet

    Enrique* - Simpson* - Senderos - Williamson - S. Kelly

    Walters* - Bale* - Silva - Dempsey - McClean

    RVP* - Adebyor* - Aguero

    Will have only 0.4 left.

    Will Mignolet start everyweek?

Adebyor or Strurridge? Have Ade from the start and will be losing 0.7m if I sell him. But can then upgrade in areas eg: Migenolot to Krul and also Williamson to Raylor)

    Krul/Lindegaard
    Caulker Shotton Enrique Koscielny Senderos
    (Silva) Bale Dempsey Cabaye McClean
    RVP Rooney Aguero

Options to upgrade in defence or midfield with the likes of Richards, Ramires, Valencia, Mata, Sess etc being the obvious candidates.

    Any suggestions welcomed.

    RMWCT 😛

    Sorensen Stockdale
    Caulker Enrique Richards Brown Simpson
    Valencia Dempsey Moses Sessegnon Bale
    RVP Aguero Torres

I'll be swapping out Stockdale for Schwarzer when fit and Enrique for Cahill if he seems to be a first XI player. Also, depending on how he does, Torres > Ba when he's back and use the extra money to upgrade the mid a bit.

    Opinions?
