The previous calendar year was a topsy-turvy one for Stephane Sessegnon. A marquee signing from Paris St. Germain in last January’s transfer window, many backed the diminutive midfield dynamo to steal the show in a Sunderland side hardly famed for its flair.

Sessegnon’s difficulties in adjusting to life in England were initially reflected in Steve Bruce’s inability to find a settled home for him in a combative midfield but, when a late-season injury crisis saw the Benin international reborn as a stand-in striker, a flurry of goals made him a key differential as mini-league races reached a crescendo. Carrying that form into a devastating pre-season, hopes were high for a profitable campaign.

By October, that optimism seemed a distant memory; a single assist from the first eight gameweeks brought an average of just 2.6 points per game and saw Sessegnon’s price in free fall. Two double-digit gameweeks were followed by a further prolonged period in the doldrums and, in a game in which consistency is a prized asset, a bulimic tendency towards feast and famine rarely fosters a loyal following. Fierce competition amongst the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) mid-priced midfielders saw Sessegnon fall by the wayside as players with the security of dead-ball duties made the early running.

Martin O’Neill’s arrival on Wearside has breathed new life into Sunderland’s stuttering season and Sessegnon has been a notable beneficiary of the growing confidence at the Stadium of Light. A total of 31 points in his last four games have seen him eclipse Seb Larsson as the side’s top FPL point-scorer. Coupled with this upturn in form is the news that O’Neill is determined to rebuff a growing crowd of suitors and has publicly challenged Sessegnon to become “a proper centre forward”. With Connor Wickham still finding his feet in the Premier League and Nicklas Bendtner cheerfully maintaining his hard-won reputation for unreliability, Sessegnon may get the chance to rise to that challenge with home games against Norwich and Swansea just around the corner.

As wildcard season gathers pace and Fantasy managers look to wring every last penny out of their squads, Sessegnon’s 6.5 price represents a significant saving over Larsson’s 6.9, and with budget upstart James McClean yet to firmly establish himself in the side, Sessegnon looks set to be the prime target for those looking to capitalise on two tempting home ties for a buoyant Black Cats.

Been looking at a few teams, and now thinking the 70-30 rule applies to FPL too... specifically, 30% of your squad scoring 70% of the squad's points.

Let's say you get what most weeks is a great score of 70 - that's 4-5 players scoring ~50 points. This is plausible as it implies the realistic situation of the other 7/6 picking up 3 on average - which implies 2s for the other mids and 2 CS for your GK and defs (not considering BPs because they're rarely given out for CS).

So what is needed to reach this great score?

On the individual player level, that's around 10 points per form player - but actually one of them is likely to be your captain in which case he counts double, equivalent to an extra player - so it's more like 8 points for each of the form players. That's a goal and 1 BP for a mid, or a goal and 2 BPs for a striker. Seen as assists, that's 2 assists. The CS point helps too for mids.

On the group level that's 50 points from 4-5 form players. Once you take off appearance points that's ~40 points needed - from goals, assists, BPs, and the odd CS point. There are various ways of getting there - say you get 5 BPs, it's 6 goals 2 assists... 5 goals 4 assists... 4 goals, 5 assists, etc. This probably looks pretty hard, but remember your captain's goals, assists and BPs count double towards this. Which is another way of explaining why the captaincy choice is so important!

The lesson I take from this is that I can have 6-7 misses every week so long I nail some form players scoring 8 or above (and ideally captain one). I'll keep a couple of reliable scorers to make up some of the numbers and avoid embarrassing scores. But I will regularly gamble on a few explosive-type players (Nani, Rooney, even Yak) and even captain them, as on the group level it only takes one maverick captaincy choice to get me there.

Interesting read, not sure how it actually relates.

I have always gone with the principle of two solid captains. RVP/Aguero. And then load the rest of the attacking spots with Value players. By value I mean players who are punching above their price tag.

Yeah RVP and to a lesser extent Aguero were getting some of the big scores deserving of captaincy anyway, earlier in the season. So would be prudent then. Not sure about their prospects now. I think at the moment we have what I believe is termed an edgam - no one because of combination of form and fixtures is expected to rack up a huge score this week (RVP, Aguero, Ade, Sturridge...) so a riskier bet like Nani or Rooney has less downside and more upside.

Aguero without Silva scored against United and had 4-5 clear chances against Liverpool - and this is Wigan we are talking about.
Sturridge possibly, I see it being a free flowing match to be honest.

Yes that's what I mean about the combination of form and fixtures - RVP is playing well IMO but has one of the toughest fixtures of the year to score goals (away at Swansea), City have a depleted mid and had downturn in scoring recently plus are against a side that got 1-1 with Chelsea and 0-0 with Liverpool and can defend when they go 5 at the back as they did against those two, Sunderland have improved markedly under MON with Studge rarely scoring more than one anyway, and Ade hasn't scored for 4 matches and managed only two shots off target all DGW.

Not so recently, but Nani and Rooney have had some great scores when they've played together this season - I think it's 3-4 double digits for Nani including two 15s. The team has momentum from beating City and when they actually have played recently (Rooney was rested etc) they have been good, Rooney better perhaps. Home to a side that consistently can't defend is tempting.

I'm calling Silva as out for a while, why would you need to go to Spain to see a specialist about an injury that could allow you to play on Monday? 😕
The only comment from Mancini is that he 'hopes' he will be fit, well so do all us owners and all City fans , means nothing.

Well the game is on Monday, he won't play midweek, that is a good chance for him to rest and see his family in mean time. Spain is not that far you know

I used to use Kaspersky but found it complicated. Now use Norton 360 for the last couple of years and it's been excellent, no problems no matter where I go.... 😉

I've heard stories about Norton being very hard to remove from your computer if you ever decide to change.

Never had any problems with annoying warnings myself.

    Sliva
    Kompany
    Tiote
    Osman

1 FT I was going to get rid of Osman and wait on Silvas condition. WC on GW22.

Any suggestions who to trade Osman for? Next week I was going to ditch Ade, even if he playes a stormer this weekend.

    Thanks in advance!

      Not getting Odem and Bosingwa.

Try downgrading Dempsy to Walter/Ben Arfa/Sess/Drenthe 😉 etc and getting in Bellamy (later to Ba) up front.

      Just a thought.

With The Yak set to rise for a 4th time (0.4m) this gameweek, is it possible that it won't be allowed to happen until the next gameweek?

If a player has enough transfers in to rise by 3am on any given day they will, surely?
