[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

Maybe it’s the blue blood, but I don’t recall ever having a strong first half to the season and I was well outside the top 100k in the FPL game at this point last year. I always manage it turn it round somehow; a lot of it is blind luck of course but as more and more casual players begin to lose interest and take up more sensible hobbies like going to the gym or talking to their girlfriends, it always seems that bit easier in the second half of the season.

With the tactic of jumping on bandwagons to build team value becoming less and less relevant, it’s time to focus on picking the players we like regardless of whether everyone else is buying them – call me a romantic but I believe it’s the “Differentials” of this world that keep this game interesting……

Steven Gerrard

It seems bizarre that we can be talking about Steven Gerrard in this article but with an ownership of just 1.9% and a marked absence from the numerous wildcard teams being thrown around, Liverpool’s DJ-hating midfielder is almost the definition of a “Differential” right now; very low ownership, a reasonable price and the potential to unleash a huge score on his unsuspecting opposition.

It was only three years ago that Steven Gerrard amassed 216 points in the FPL game; his 16 goals and 10 assists made him an essential pick and the massive number of transfers in during the season saw his price soar to an eye watering 12.5. A lack of form and fitness and a succession of injuries has seen Gerrard fall out of favour amongst the Fantasy masses in recent times, but now that he’s started to shows signs of his old form, his current price of just 10.5 looks like strong value.

After picking up a goal against Newcastle the day before New Years Eve, Gerrard continued his return to fitness by starting his first full game and scoring the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Man City on Wednesday. With Luis Suarez absent for another four league games, Gerrard will be expected to help out in attack wherever possible and we’re backing him to make a big impact over the coming weeks, starting against Stoke.

Darren Bent

Another strange choice for the “Differentials” considering his past form, but Darren Bent’s injuries problems this season has seen his ownership drop to a season low of just 4.0% and a price of 9.6. With an appealing fixture against an injury ravaged Everton side up next, we’re expecting the Villa striker to pick up where he left off last season, when he slotted past Tim Howard twice at Goodison.

Everton’s injury problems have become so bad in recent weeks that when Sylvain Distin limped off at White Hart Lane, he was replaced by Shane Duffy, a player that until Thursday morning wasn’t even listed on the FPL site. The Youngster actually did ok but with Phil Jagielka definitely out and Distin a major doubt, Alex Mcleish will surely abandon his defensive tactics at home and go on the attack against such a weakened Everton side. Barring a last minute injury, Darren Bent will be leading the line and represents Villa’s best chance of attacking points in what is historically a high scoring game between the two teams, so could be a nice option if funds can stretch that far.

Hatem Ben Arfa

The departure of Demba Ba to the African Cup of Nations is expected to provide a timely boost to Newcastle’s unsettled Frenchman, whose extraordinary solo goal against Blackburn threw him right back into the limelight last weekend.

Ben Arfa hasn’t started a league game since the last time he made the differentials in Gameweek 14, but now that he is seemingly fully fit once again, we’re confident that this time round, he can start to put a run of games together. Where he will be deployed is open to debate; his preferred position would probably be tucked in behind the striker but a place out wide is probably the most likely considering how well he played against Blackburn. Regardless of where Pardew chooses to play him, if he’s on the pitch then he’ll be involved and the potential is there for a bumper score if Newcastle can put together another big performance.

It’s always a lottery which way a side can go when a new manager takes over, but QPR boss Mark Hughes will have his work cut out and Newcastle look too strong right now. We’re backing a home win here then, and with an ownership of just 1.4% in the FPL game and a bargain price of just 5.4, Ben Arfa could be a key player and major differential for those who take the punt.

tbh i am looking for someone as a punt for gw 21 and 22 before i wildcard. my defence next week has shawcross WBA, simpson fulham and enrique bolton so am i happy enough with that. richards would come in or wigan away then spurs at home, cant see him getting more points from the alter than the 3 above. and this week ive got simpson QPR, enrique STO and assou-ekotto BOL. plus i see kompany as a season keeper, so im going to leave my defence until wildcard ideally

thus osman does seem a logical choice for the chop looking at everything else- so hba or valencia? i see gw 22 valenica is at arsenal away, which is leaning me towards barfa thoughts.

Always comforting when 6 of the top 10 in the captains poll are in your team, but it only makes the decision harder....who to make (c) and (vc) from this lot and why? I'm looking to make up ground on my mini league leader. so it's currently on Rooney(c) and Bale(vc)

Bale, Dempsey, Nani, Rooney, Adebayor, RVP

Lose De Laet and Lindegaard. Also R Taylor no longer nailed on, so downgrading to Williamson/Santon will give you extra cash. Otherwise decent.

Pocket .5 mill by selling lindegaard and play vorm every week? If I sell rtaylor then I lose .5 mill which isn't pleasant but on other hand he earned me .5 from start. Will his price plummet if he loses game time?

gerrard vs vdv is yr dilemma
personally i would put it down to trust
do you trust a high flying spurs vs crappy wolves or a frankly disappointing pool vs stoke's monsters
vdv will go up in price today
gerrard won't (so he'll be there next week if you need to get him)
level headed logic....but that's not always what this game's about (unless yr on top of yr mini league - maybe pretend that you are)

I think you need massive balls to do it. It could go extremely well or horribly wrong.

I wouldn't take a hit to sell Silva when he has Wigan and a good run of fixtures to come.

I've been fairly cautious for the last few weeks and I've been steadily dropping. Owning Silva is absolutely no fun. Silva's dropping so it will be easy to get him back if I need to.

Van Persie can equal what he did all last season if he gets a goal and assist at the weekend...
his stats are shockingly similar in comparison to minutes played and bonus points too.

    2011/ now Minutes played: 1711 17goals 6 assists 27bps
    2010/2011 Minutes played: 1770 18goals 7 assists 27bps

Hi JK. Have you changed your plan to WC for GW24? Maybe tomoro like me?

(Just curious....please for the love of God don't reply with a RMWCT draft 2,677 please 😉 )

LMAO, nope have no plans to wc next week unless I'm hit by a major injury crisis. You should have been on here earlier, I got bored and started messing around trying to create a team with attacking coverage from all the big 6, it went epic. But my actual wc team is done and dusted.

I know Ben Arfa is tempting me Mull, but do you not think I should rid myself of at least ONE yellow flag? (I have 4 yellows FFS!!!) Thanks for reply

Demba ba is at -367% does that mean he will fall 0.3 mill in the next 3 days?

No you can only go up or down 0.1 in one day. -367 means he passed what would normally be expected for a drop (-100) but the red flag of protection has changed things, so even with all the extra transfres out it's still not enough.

      It's complicated.

Guys, Need some advice this week, thinking something like Jones/Drenthe to

    1) Santon/Valencia
    2) Kelly/Dempsey
    3) Another?

    Current team
    Krul/Vorm
    Enrique/Jones/Evans/BAE/Caulker
    Silva/Bale/Walters/Nani/Drenthe
    RVP/Ade/Sturrage

    Cheers

I could make a strong case for 6 of my 7 attackers to be captain..

It's been sitting on Bale for a while but I think Utd will outscore Spurs..

Nani 3 points vs Wigan at home & 1 point vs blackburn at home is putting me off him..

RVP going under the radar at the minute as well

    Morning all

A quick question: if VDV is rested and Defoe plays instead will that have a favourable or adverse influence on Ade's potential to score?
