Maybe it’s the blue blood, but I don’t recall ever having a strong first half to the season and I was well outside the top 100k in the FPL game at this point last year. I always manage it turn it round somehow; a lot of it is blind luck of course but as more and more casual players begin to lose interest and take up more sensible hobbies like going to the gym or talking to their girlfriends, it always seems that bit easier in the second half of the season.

With the tactic of jumping on bandwagons to build team value becoming less and less relevant, it’s time to focus on picking the players we like regardless of whether everyone else is buying them – call me a romantic but I believe it’s the “Differentials” of this world that keep this game interesting……

Steven Gerrard

It seems bizarre that we can be talking about Steven Gerrard in this article but with an ownership of just 1.9% and a marked absence from the numerous wildcard teams being thrown around, Liverpool’s DJ-hating midfielder is almost the definition of a “Differential” right now; very low ownership, a reasonable price and the potential to unleash a huge score on his unsuspecting opposition.

It was only three years ago that Steven Gerrard amassed 216 points in the FPL game; his 16 goals and 10 assists made him an essential pick and the massive number of transfers in during the season saw his price soar to an eye watering 12.5. A lack of form and fitness and a succession of injuries has seen Gerrard fall out of favour amongst the Fantasy masses in recent times, but now that he’s started to shows signs of his old form, his current price of just 10.5 looks like strong value.

After picking up a goal against Newcastle the day before New Years Eve, Gerrard continued his return to fitness by starting his first full game and scoring the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Man City on Wednesday. With Luis Suarez absent for another four league games, Gerrard will be expected to help out in attack wherever possible and we’re backing him to make a big impact over the coming weeks, starting against Stoke.

Darren Bent

Another strange choice for the “Differentials” considering his past form, but Darren Bent’s injuries problems this season has seen his ownership drop to a season low of just 4.0% and a price of 9.6. With an appealing fixture against an injury ravaged Everton side up next, we’re expecting the Villa striker to pick up where he left off last season, when he slotted past Tim Howard twice at Goodison.

Everton’s injury problems have become so bad in recent weeks that when Sylvain Distin limped off at White Hart Lane, he was replaced by Shane Duffy, a player that until Thursday morning wasn’t even listed on the FPL site. The Youngster actually did ok but with Phil Jagielka definitely out and Distin a major doubt, Alex Mcleish will surely abandon his defensive tactics at home and go on the attack against such a weakened Everton side. Barring a last minute injury, Darren Bent will be leading the line and represents Villa’s best chance of attacking points in what is historically a high scoring game between the two teams, so could be a nice option if funds can stretch that far.

Hatem Ben Arfa

The departure of Demba Ba to the African Cup of Nations is expected to provide a timely boost to Newcastle’s unsettled Frenchman, whose extraordinary solo goal against Blackburn threw him right back into the limelight last weekend.

Ben Arfa hasn’t started a league game since the last time he made the differentials in Gameweek 14, but now that he is seemingly fully fit once again, we’re confident that this time round, he can start to put a run of games together. Where he will be deployed is open to debate; his preferred position would probably be tucked in behind the striker but a place out wide is probably the most likely considering how well he played against Blackburn. Regardless of where Pardew chooses to play him, if he’s on the pitch then he’ll be involved and the potential is there for a bumper score if Newcastle can put together another big performance.

It’s always a lottery which way a side can go when a new manager takes over, but QPR boss Mark Hughes will have his work cut out and Newcastle look too strong right now. We’re backing a home win here then, and with an ownership of just 1.4% in the FPL game and a bargain price of just 5.4, Ben Arfa could be a key player and major differential for those who take the punt.

Whether Silva played against Wigan was always going to be the deciding factor with those fixtures (TOT are tough but can be scored against, eve are dire). It looks like he will play. It may be another Silva special. I'm keeping, but will try to bring Nani in by another means.

Jones -> J.Evans and Walters -> Dempsey worth 2 frees for this week given that I will WC either next week or week after. Leaves team as follows for this GW

    Howard
    BAE J.Evans Simpson
    Silva Nani Dempsey Bale
    Morrison RVP Ade
    Subs: Vorm, Moses, Naylor, Shotton

Will possibly look to get Walters back with WC as well as be looking to get rid of Howard, Evans, Morrison, Ade and possibly BAE and Shotton. Thoughts??

    Lindegaard
    BAE, Enrique, Richards, Santon
    Bale, Gerrard, Dempsey
    RVP (vc), Aguero (c), Sturridge

    Subs; Vorm: Sess, McClean, Kelly

I took out Silva For Gerrard, worth it as i lost nothing on Silva, a bit risky for monday, and plays spurs week after so can see how Gerrard does before bringing Silva back in.

Overall thoughts for team then? much appreciated.

Yeah Santon has a hypothetical starting doubt over him but the balance of probabilities are that he's settling into his LB role nicely and Pardew won't touch.

Mmm.... I have Sturridge too and I'm suggesting benching my player.... I really dunno. He is a quality player, but the team doesn't always play to maximize his scoring, and sometimes he just looks out of the game.

Yes if your going to play 5.4m for Ben arfa you have to play him at some point and if you don't play him this week when he has a chance of playing as a forward against a struggling QPR team then you will never play him; and he's too good and expensive to be sat on the bench every gameweek.

Because your other defenders are fullbacks and are all known for getting forward on the overlap, pumping crosses in, scoring spectacular 30 yard goals (OK that was just the once...). Jevans is just CB.

Still, it's a risk so you could take the points in hand and play Jevans. Also not counting on United CS quite so much after the last month 😉

AHHHHHHHH...... so I spontaneously wake up 10 mins before the price changes wondering whether to have one last shot at transferring Silva out before he drops and Gerrard rises. Frantic browsing on the FPL transfers page, lots of hurried checking, the time ticks past the 2.30am panic zone and I realize the prices could change any minute, then I think "you've waited 2 weeks for this GW, why ruin it in 5 seconds?"

Still the FPL transfer system is making less sense by the day. The discrepancy in transfers on FPL and transfers recorded by TotalFPL and FISO is striking, and the whole protection thing seems to have been either abandoned or changed.

It's 4 in the morning, my judgement is significantly decreased and I really want Ben Arfa in there - think I would regret not doing it. Now that he will get a chance from start, I hope he'll be on all engines roaring for more gametime and proving himself! I might also wonder what the hell I was thinking tomorrow after the game - I won't lie, the chances for that are good. 😛

Would you have Welbeck, Sturridge or Yak this gameweek by the way?

😉 Sturridge.... He's in my team.
Obertan could start with Ben Arfa on the bench....its risky.
I'd have Dempsey straight in there.

I'm torn between those same four.....and I'm thinking RVP, honestly. He hasn't gone 2 straight games without scoring in over a year.

Bale over Ade, I think, too. Just form, in my opinion. Ade is in kinda icy form right now. It's tricky.

If I thought Lampard would start the game on the bench I would actually to with Sturridge. Currently have it on Nani with Bale as vice. Ade has a great fixture but he's working in very tight quarters upfront right now

Which is better guys for the rest of the season?

    A: Sess & Walters
    B: McClean & Dempsey

Other 3 mids would be Bale, Valencia and Silva.

For the rest of the season, I'd say: depends on your third striker. If third striker is Yak, then option A. If he's another, then B.

For the rest of the season I'd say A. Because Sess is more certain than Mcclean. Plus Walters is oop and on pens. Dempsey is a great option but over the course of the rest of the season I'd say A would bring more points

        Thanks guys!!

Will stick with A then....1.4m in the bank, so I can switch Yak to Ba later on. Other thing I will be doing is Nani to Silva when the time is right. Had a look at over the past 6 games Valencia and Nani have bought scored roughly 43 points each so going with both to see how it works out.

        Current WC team is

        Krul(Vorm)
        Enrique, Richards, BAE, Santon (Caulker)
        Bale, Valencia, Nani, (Sess, Walters)
        RVP, Yak, Aguero

Would not! do the last thing you said there, Lmfao. Silva is a season keeper. You've probably earned some bucks on him to - why throw it away at double coverage of a Manchester side with tough fixtures and wobbling form?

Richards. Assou-Ekotto. Jose Enrique. Evans J.
