Maybe it’s the blue blood, but I don’t recall ever having a strong first half to the season and I was well outside the top 100k in the FPL game at this point last year. I always manage it turn it round somehow; a lot of it is blind luck of course but as more and more casual players begin to lose interest and take up more sensible hobbies like going to the gym or talking to their girlfriends, it always seems that bit easier in the second half of the season.

With the tactic of jumping on bandwagons to build team value becoming less and less relevant, it’s time to focus on picking the players we like regardless of whether everyone else is buying them – call me a romantic but I believe it’s the “Differentials” of this world that keep this game interesting……

Steven Gerrard

It seems bizarre that we can be talking about Steven Gerrard in this article but with an ownership of just 1.9% and a marked absence from the numerous wildcard teams being thrown around, Liverpool’s DJ-hating midfielder is almost the definition of a “Differential” right now; very low ownership, a reasonable price and the potential to unleash a huge score on his unsuspecting opposition.

It was only three years ago that Steven Gerrard amassed 216 points in the FPL game; his 16 goals and 10 assists made him an essential pick and the massive number of transfers in during the season saw his price soar to an eye watering 12.5. A lack of form and fitness and a succession of injuries has seen Gerrard fall out of favour amongst the Fantasy masses in recent times, but now that he’s started to shows signs of his old form, his current price of just 10.5 looks like strong value.

After picking up a goal against Newcastle the day before New Years Eve, Gerrard continued his return to fitness by starting his first full game and scoring the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Man City on Wednesday. With Luis Suarez absent for another four league games, Gerrard will be expected to help out in attack wherever possible and we’re backing him to make a big impact over the coming weeks, starting against Stoke.

Darren Bent

Another strange choice for the “Differentials” considering his past form, but Darren Bent’s injuries problems this season has seen his ownership drop to a season low of just 4.0% and a price of 9.6. With an appealing fixture against an injury ravaged Everton side up next, we’re expecting the Villa striker to pick up where he left off last season, when he slotted past Tim Howard twice at Goodison.

Everton’s injury problems have become so bad in recent weeks that when Sylvain Distin limped off at White Hart Lane, he was replaced by Shane Duffy, a player that until Thursday morning wasn’t even listed on the FPL site. The Youngster actually did ok but with Phil Jagielka definitely out and Distin a major doubt, Alex Mcleish will surely abandon his defensive tactics at home and go on the attack against such a weakened Everton side. Barring a last minute injury, Darren Bent will be leading the line and represents Villa’s best chance of attacking points in what is historically a high scoring game between the two teams, so could be a nice option if funds can stretch that far.

Hatem Ben Arfa

The departure of Demba Ba to the African Cup of Nations is expected to provide a timely boost to Newcastle’s unsettled Frenchman, whose extraordinary solo goal against Blackburn threw him right back into the limelight last weekend.

Ben Arfa hasn’t started a league game since the last time he made the differentials in Gameweek 14, but now that he is seemingly fully fit once again, we’re confident that this time round, he can start to put a run of games together. Where he will be deployed is open to debate; his preferred position would probably be tucked in behind the striker but a place out wide is probably the most likely considering how well he played against Blackburn. Regardless of where Pardew chooses to play him, if he’s on the pitch then he’ll be involved and the potential is there for a bumper score if Newcastle can put together another big performance.

It’s always a lottery which way a side can go when a new manager takes over, but QPR boss Mark Hughes will have his work cut out and Newcastle look too strong right now. We’re backing a home win here then, and with an ownership of just 1.4% in the FPL game and a bargain price of just 5.4, Ben Arfa could be a key player and major differential for those who take the punt.

Fixtures are poor when considered in isolation but dovetail nicely with the other teams mentioned, as a whole - and it is a mighty impressive home CS record Swansea have, with their away defending much improved too - just ask Liverpool and Villa.

MON has already tightened up Sunderland, I would bet on their defence now - Brown the safe option, Kilgallon slightly less certain but bargain basement.

What I don't understand is why Valencia has been having so much success lately and Nani has been seemingly hopeless.

This is such a tough call because Valencia seems to be in much better form, but I haven't seen enough games to know for sure about Nani.

Watched the Wigan match where Valencia scored and assisted, and Nani did nothing, and Valencia was actually playing on the wing whereas Nani wasn't - he was drifting around the centre in that dull central midfield United have. Playing the short balls and feeding the wingers instead of going down the centre to score or assist. If Nani and Valencia are both on the wing - ie. central midfield is sorted out so Nani doesn't have to patch it up - I expect better from both

Repost from earlier: Anyone want to discuss my long-ass Wildcard considerations?

I am triggering my wildcard tomorrow in anticipation of GW 23. Here’s are my options

First instinct: the team I came up with going strictly on instinct.
    Vorm Schwarzer
Richards Enrique Evans Simpson shotton (or caulker, if shotton is out)
Silva Bale Dempsey moses sess(walters after GW 23)
    Studge Aguero RVP

If I want the super strikeforce:
    Vorm Schwarzer
Richards Caulker Evans Simpson shotton (or gabbidon)
Silva Bale Dempsey dyer mcclean (walters after GW 23)
    Rooney Aguero RVP

If I want the all around-midfield and a cheap striker
    Vorm Schwarzer
Richards Evans Simpson Caulker shotton( or gabbidon)
Silva Bale Dempsey Nani mcclean (walters after GW 23)
    Helguson Aguero RVP

As if I don’t have enough to note, Nani/Shotton in that least team could be Valencia/Enrique.

    So, it amounts to

    Enrique, moses, sess, studge
    Caulker, dyer, mcclean, Rooney
    Caulker, Nani, Mcclean, Helguson

When put that way, I like the first one the best. Opinions?

I like the first one. The third has it's charms but but Walters would be an expensive 5th and you're then faced with a rotation with Helguson - maybe their fixtures work well together. First option allows for an easier change of 3rd striker if Sturridge does not perform - Ba, Odemwingie, Bellamy - who knows

If Nani does almost nothing at home against WIGAN and BLACKBURN... why should we trust him against BOLTON?

Valencia's form is almost too rich to ignore but I have no idea why he's been getting such good returns, while Nani hasn't. I suppose we can say "Nani is one of the most expensive midfielders for a reason, because in the end he will always score highly". It's just that how can we know when he'll do it!

Valencia actually seems like a safer bet this weekend to me and if they were the same price I'd still struggle to choose one or the other.

Yeah, that is tough. That's why, for one week only, I got both!

If I had to pick, I think I'd say Nani, just due to historical precedent, and that he is, technically a better goal threat.

Hmm, well I'm going to go and sleep on it and decide in the morning.

Just before I go, would you mind telling me what you'd do if you had Sessegnon on the bench this week (ready for the following GWs) and Valencia starting?

I have the option to downgrade Sess to McClean and "upgrade" Valencia to Nani.

Would you say this is a good move or not?

It may just be that based on the assumption Nani will be in the top 3 scoring mids at the end of the season (which is very likely) you just have to play him every game. Without fail!

The thing is if Valencia had played more games this season and kept this level of form, he'd also be in the top 3 scoring mids...

Yep. But I suppose that's the whole package you buy with a player - not just their form but the team around them. Valencia was competing with Young, Nani hasn't been competing with anyone. Maybe he should have been, judging by some performances 😉

Unknown according to FFS injury news. "A couple of weeks" was the prognosis when he was injured on 21st Dec. But not back tomorrow.

Reckon Young will take a good while to reestablish himself in the team, Valencia could stay for a while yet or even keep his place.

Just to clarify Young's not directly in competition for the same spot - the way it works is he plays left wing and Nani right wing, which is also Valencia's position. When Young's out Nani plays on the left and Valencia on the right.

    (C) Gerrard. Am I crazy? Other options are the usuals - Aguero, Bale, Barndoor, Mata, RVP. But I feel I need to do something different...

Since returning from injury he hasn't even played a full 90 in the Prem yet... would be extremely cautious. Whoever you feel will score the most, pick them even if it's predictable - would hate to captain someone who played only part of the game.

+1 It's a bit risky to captain Gerrard. I had him in for that for a while but changing my mind just get him as diff is already enough punt. But if you enjoy high risk high return then go for it.

Agree. All this Gerrard business is nonsense to me. I would not risk having him yet, let alone captaining him.

It could work out for you but I seriously doubt it's your best option. I'd go for Aguero, Bale or RvP.

Aguero doesn't score too many away but this is Wigan we're talking about! He scored a hat-trick against them earlier in the season so he looks likely to grab a goal or two. He'd be my choice I think. It's a shame I can't quite squeeze him into my team, with Rooney and RvP.

Yes, Crazy, completely. Liverpool struggles to score at all: captaining one of their players is insane. You need a penalty, and if you don't get one, you'll be disappointed.

      A. For no other reason than Nani's pissed me off all year by only scoring points when I don't have him, VDV's hammy's are made of chewing gum, and Ade won't play next week.

Yes A is really tempting me. I like the balance and have a good vibe about taking the risk. I currently have B, which has potential to be explosive this week. On wildcard hence the dilemma as would be painful to correct later.
