[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

Maybe it’s the blue blood, but I don’t recall ever having a strong first half to the season and I was well outside the top 100k in the FPL game at this point last year. I always manage it turn it round somehow; a lot of it is blind luck of course but as more and more casual players begin to lose interest and take up more sensible hobbies like going to the gym or talking to their girlfriends, it always seems that bit easier in the second half of the season.

With the tactic of jumping on bandwagons to build team value becoming less and less relevant, it’s time to focus on picking the players we like regardless of whether everyone else is buying them – call me a romantic but I believe it’s the “Differentials” of this world that keep this game interesting……

Steven Gerrard

It seems bizarre that we can be talking about Steven Gerrard in this article but with an ownership of just 1.9% and a marked absence from the numerous wildcard teams being thrown around, Liverpool’s DJ-hating midfielder is almost the definition of a “Differential” right now; very low ownership, a reasonable price and the potential to unleash a huge score on his unsuspecting opposition.

It was only three years ago that Steven Gerrard amassed 216 points in the FPL game; his 16 goals and 10 assists made him an essential pick and the massive number of transfers in during the season saw his price soar to an eye watering 12.5. A lack of form and fitness and a succession of injuries has seen Gerrard fall out of favour amongst the Fantasy masses in recent times, but now that he’s started to shows signs of his old form, his current price of just 10.5 looks like strong value.

After picking up a goal against Newcastle the day before New Years Eve, Gerrard continued his return to fitness by starting his first full game and scoring the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Man City on Wednesday. With Luis Suarez absent for another four league games, Gerrard will be expected to help out in attack wherever possible and we’re backing him to make a big impact over the coming weeks, starting against Stoke.

Darren Bent

Another strange choice for the “Differentials” considering his past form, but Darren Bent’s injuries problems this season has seen his ownership drop to a season low of just 4.0% and a price of 9.6. With an appealing fixture against an injury ravaged Everton side up next, we’re expecting the Villa striker to pick up where he left off last season, when he slotted past Tim Howard twice at Goodison.

Everton’s injury problems have become so bad in recent weeks that when Sylvain Distin limped off at White Hart Lane, he was replaced by Shane Duffy, a player that until Thursday morning wasn’t even listed on the FPL site. The Youngster actually did ok but with Phil Jagielka definitely out and Distin a major doubt, Alex Mcleish will surely abandon his defensive tactics at home and go on the attack against such a weakened Everton side. Barring a last minute injury, Darren Bent will be leading the line and represents Villa’s best chance of attacking points in what is historically a high scoring game between the two teams, so could be a nice option if funds can stretch that far.

Hatem Ben Arfa

The departure of Demba Ba to the African Cup of Nations is expected to provide a timely boost to Newcastle’s unsettled Frenchman, whose extraordinary solo goal against Blackburn threw him right back into the limelight last weekend.

Ben Arfa hasn’t started a league game since the last time he made the differentials in Gameweek 14, but now that he is seemingly fully fit once again, we’re confident that this time round, he can start to put a run of games together. Where he will be deployed is open to debate; his preferred position would probably be tucked in behind the striker but a place out wide is probably the most likely considering how well he played against Blackburn. Regardless of where Pardew chooses to play him, if he’s on the pitch then he’ll be involved and the potential is there for a bumper score if Newcastle can put together another big performance.

It’s always a lottery which way a side can go when a new manager takes over, but QPR boss Mark Hughes will have his work cut out and Newcastle look too strong right now. We’re backing a home win here then, and with an ownership of just 1.4% in the FPL game and a bargain price of just 5.4, Ben Arfa could be a key player and major differential for those who take the punt.

My mind wanders late night after a few drinks but reading about Gibson's departure to Everton. What has happened to Man U's youth policy? Conisdering this was the team that had the golden era of Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, Butt and the Nevilles the only people I can see who are even close to the first team and come from the youth team are two of that same era and Johnny flippin Evans. Everybody else has been signed, however young. What has happened?

Don't forget Welbeck either who has had plenty of games this season, a Manchester lad born and bread. Tom Cleverly is another young prospect who is unfortunately out with an injury but some of you will remember how good he was at the start of the season.

Wes Brown was also a product of our youth academy to go alongside the other players you mentioned...I kinda miss him 🙁

Yeah I've heard. His agent is apparently asking for ridiculous ammounts, I'd like to know how much.
But by the same token if he'd rather get Scholes out of retirement than give him at least a squad role I'm not sure I blame him for wanting to move.

    Lost on last page, sorry.

Is it just me or is this proving to be the most difficult wildcard ever?

If I already have Aguero in my team can I justify taking out Silva for Gerrard? Hoping for a few price rises tonight/this morning so I can hopefully log on tomorrow before 11/11:30 and do my wildcard team which at the moment looks something like…

    GK: Vorm (Tremmel)
DF: J.Evans, Senderos, Simpson (Caulker, Tierney)
MF: Bale, Nani, Silva OR Gerrard, Mclean, (Ferguson)
    FW: Rooney, Aguero, Van Persie

Very attack minded I know, and I don’t mind having Ferguson in there.

Swap Nani to Valencia and you might be able to do better than Tremmel and Ferguson... as it stands you're going to have to play Mclean every week. Might as well have two cheapies that rotate.

It really makes no sense to me. Surely the extra 0.5 spent on getting a suitable keeper who rotates reasonably well with Vorm, will be more than worth in terms of how many extra points it gets you.

I understand it is a bit risky but I plan on playing Vorm in every game this season anyway. As of yet I haven't used my sub goalkeeper. Also, it would be a bit better for me if Moreira was the 2nd choice, as he is 0.1 cheaper than Tremmel...but who knows? 🙂

Dempsey. Why? Because Mata's form away from home is not great and 2 of the threee games for him are away from home. Valencia is away to arsenal and at home to stoke in games 2 and 3 - I can see those being grinders.. 1-0 or 2-0... but not sure if valencia will bag one. And then there is an inform Dempsey - not the sexiest of choices, but with a fixture list of (bla NEW WBA) I'm thinkin a decent chance for a form player to get an extra few points. As ever, just guessing tho'. What's your own gut feel?

Simon Cox could be a good shout. Bagged (no pun intended) a hat-trick in the cup and with Shane Long out he's bound to start.

      If not, then Yak.

Both keepers are risky. DeGea will probably play at least 50% of the time....MON might fancy resurrecting Gordons career and their is also Westwood to contend with.
BAE has a tough run of fixtures...I've had him since GW12 but I'm dumping on my WC next week and running away with the profit.
Nani to Valencia (and upgrade Sess or Cabaye to Silva?) Lack of Citeh attack is a worry

    which team is best:

    A)

    Vorm
    Enrique
    Walker
    BAE
    Richards
    Williamson
    Moses
    Mclean
    Nani
    Bale
    Gerrard
    RVP
    Aguero
    Graham

    or

    B)

    Vorm
    Enrique
    Dawson
    BAE
    Richards
    Caulker
    Moses
    Mclean
    Nani
    Bale
    Ferguson
    RVP
    Aguero
    Rooney

Basically its either Gerrard and shit bench or Rooney and shitter bench

Presumably there's nothing stopping City from recalling Adebayor on short notice?

Would be amazing if, having decided that Spurs are genuine title challengers, City called Adebayor back right at the end of the transfer window, just to f*ck Spurs over. Would be amazing scenes.

He's on a season long loan I think which would mean you can't recall. Not sure though.

Don't know but surely Spurs wouldn't have agreed to that. Personally I think there's got to be a no recall clause

Yeah, maybe not. Depends if there was a fee involved. If there was, then City can't recall. For obvious reasons.

I thought he was on an ironclad season-long loan, although maybe City have an escape clause.

It's an amazing deal Spurs have got, in that City are still paying more than half of Adebayor's wages.

If FM2012 is any judge (and it is flawed, Tiote for example doesn't have 20 for all his stats) then if you pay a fee for a season long loan then he cant be recalled.

Guys, a question about FISO. No players are listed as protected, but Ba and a few others don't seem to be dropping. Are the prices fixed until the flags are removed? So will Vermaelen, Ba etc remain at current value despite massive sales?
