Gary Cahill’s finally completes his move to Chelsea. Fernando Torres takes up extra shooting training to help end his goal drought. Hatem Ben Arfa reiterates his frustration at a lack of game time, while Steve Kean is adamant Chris Samba is going nowehere:

Chelsea have this afternoon confirmed the transfer of Gary Cahill from Bolton for an undisclosed fee. Coming in at 5.2 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Cahill certainly offers a cheap route into Andre Villas-Boas’ back-four and looks likely to place a big question mark against the future game time of David Luiz in the heart of the Blues back-four. The Blues have hardly been kind for clean sheet returns though; last weekend’s 1-0 win over Sunderland was their first in seven games and only the second they have managed at the Bridge all season.

Chelsea coach Steve Holland has revealed Fernando Torres is taking extra training sessions in order to end his scoring drought. The Blues’ record signing has failed to find the net since gameweek 6 and has scored just twice this season. Torres picked up an assist in the 1-0 win over Sunderland, with Frank Lampard slotting home after the Spaniard’s effort had hit the bar and looked busy throughout. Holland went on to say:

His finishing is looking very good in training, the ball is flying in. I have personally spent some time with him on making sure [he’s in the right position]. Sometimes when you’re trying hard to score, you end up in areas where you’re less likely to score. It’s not a bad crime, it’s only because he’s so determined.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew assured reporters after yesterday’s game against QPR that the injury to star midfield player Yohan Cabaye is not as bad as first feared. Cabaye left the field mid-way through the first half after being on the receiving end of a challenge from Shaun Derry and was immediately sent to the club doctor. Initial check-ups, however, showed no serious damage, with Pardew saying:

He [Cabaye] felt it [the challenge] was probably a little bit over-exuberant, but the doc thinks he is going to be okay.

Hatem Ben Arfa has once again voiced his displeasure at not being included in Newcastle’s starting XI. Ben Arfa was expected to have earned himself a starting role after his wonder goal in the FA Cup against Blackburn last weekend but once again saw himself line-up on the bench, with only the injury to Cabaye affording him sixty-six minutes game time. The Frenchman admitted:

I am frustrated at not being able to play, but I won’t go and start an argument with the coach about it, because I know that I will only lose. I will respect his authority and keep my philosophy whether I play or not. For me football is a game based on lots of movements and passes. The coach likes the long, direct game. He often says, “cross it in the box” but I completely respect that philosophy. I am ready both physically and mentally. I will not start any arguments, my time will come and I just have to be patient.

Sunderland defender Matt Kilgallon will have a scan in the next few days to determine the extent of the ankle injury he picked up against Chelsea. Kilgallon has enjoyed a mini renaissance at the Stadium of Light, starting the club’s last three league games, but could now face a spell on the sidelines. With Wes Brown a doubt with a groin problem and Titus Bramble currently unavailable due to an Achilles injury, Michael Turner looks set to step into the first-team fold. Turner replaced Kilgallon at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and with home games against Swansea and Norwich up next, could be a decent cut-price option at just 4.2.

Steve Kean is adamant that Chris Samba is not for sale, despite reports linking the centre-half with a move away from Ewood Park. The Blackburn skipper missed the FA Cup defeat at Newcastle and last week’s home win over Fulham due to illness, but his manager is hopeful Samba will be available this weekend for the trip to Everton. Reports also suggest Rovers have rejected interest in Steven N’Zonzi from a host of Premier League clubs.

    PRICE FALLS:

Can somebody please explain how these work?

Do they fall in the same way they go up?

Do they have to fall twice for them to fall 0.1 in your team?

Just say (a player) has just went up 0.1 in my team (I gained selling value), when they fall do I immediately lose 0.1? or do they have to fall twice before I lose selling value?

Or does it depend on when they rose in particular within my team?

A bit hard to explain this sorry, someone may be able to simplify it hopefully,

    Please help, thanks

think it work like you get 50% of any price rise, so you wont get 0.1 till they go up 0.2 purchase price. and same on way down, i am basing that on jones in my team having fallen 0.2 on sales but only 0.1 in my team

Your selling value increases by 0.1 at 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 rises.
Your selling value decreases by 0.1 at 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 falls.

So after you have gained 0.1 (player rise of 0.2), only a 0.1 fall will lose your profit.

Immediately lose it, if I understand what you're saying.

You can just apply the formula, Purchase price + ROUNDDOWN (Actual price - Purchase Price)/2.

Basically, say you buy a player for 6.0 million, he gets enough transfers in to rise to 6.1 he will only sell for 6.0. Once he hits 6.2, he will sell for 6.1, if he falls back by 0.1 or 0.2 he will sell for 6.0.
If he falls below the price you bought him for then every 0.1 drop is a 0.1 drop in selling price

This website explains it better, and tells you when the rises and falls are likely to happen: http://www.fiso.co.uk/crackthecode.php

Can somebody please explain the rationale behind only get 50% of price rises for players you bring in? I'm sure there's a very good/simple explanation for this. I'm not saying its necessarily a good or bad rule, although it does seem to penalise you for making good early choices if you want to transfer out at a later date, I just don't understand the rationale! Does the other 50% go to the player's fantasy agent!? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

otherwise some guys would have fortune to spend, and yes you could argue they earned it by good spots early on, but i think it adds to your management skill by having to decide when to sell, if at all, to cash in on price increase.

Most decent teams are valued at least a few million above £100m, if you got the full selling price they'd reach silly values and there'd be a massive gap between casual and dedicated FPL players.
Also, if you don't receive the full profit it's less incentive to simply buy the flavour of the week who everyone else is buying, and makes it more interesting.

Hmmm, I think you all make some very good points. However, the four point hits should deter transfers simply for value/flavour of the month. It also seems a little odd to have a rule which potentially penalises the dedicated over the casual. I can see the issue re WCs. Thanks.

Swans at home have been a revelation, and keep-ball tactic will work in their favour for CSs, IMO. The Arse call is based on Sagna being back soon, and of course Verms, significantly strengthening current diabolical backline, plus Verms big att potential.

Also, Szecececy etc, rotates fab with Lindy-hop, so should have options at GK most weeks.

Very similar to mine below, except a bit more team value in yours. I really really like the team, I think the 3 up front are going to be very useful for the next few GWs. You've also managed to sneak in a Man City defender as well, fair play.
Stay away from Jones, get Evans if you want Man U cover. I also am a bit worried by Silva, I shipped him out when he was in the Canaries. If he starts to rip it up, you could do:
      Bale/Dempsey > Silva
      Enrique > Evans
Also, personally I'd prefer Rooney over Sturridge. He's playing well, and if he'd have slotted that penalty it'd be a totally different story.

Assured of both, bar injury (again). He's a £24m player, you don't drop him from team or pens in favour of a two-month loan signing.

And who's going to cough up to buy him? None of the bigger clubs, and I doubt Tony Fernandes is going to offer quite that kind of financial backing to Hughes this early.

yes, that was at home though, my only doubt over him is his dramatic downturn in away games

    Who to play this week:

    Vorm (away to Sunderland) or
    Krul (away to Fulham)?

Fulham tend to be good at home - or is that just a myth? I could check i suppose...

MON has applied his magic sponge to Sunderland so that's a toughie as well.

This could be the ultimate example of when to have to flip a coin.

Apart from the Torres bandwagon what are other people's strategies for mixing it up until the end of the season? Playing 5 in defence? Trebling at the back?

I'm probably going to continue with the orthodox - is mixing it up at this time of year the usually done thing? It's only my second season so still learning some of the tricks.

        Stay ... on ... target.

Too early for end-game strategies, imo.

For me, the simplistic strategy is: heavy hitters/big 6 for the next 10 weeks, then shift to relegation fighters/team's fighting for Europe near the end.

Relegation fighters - good call. I always think of trying that (for the Telegraph version i've been playing for years) but always bottle it. Then i regret it. Then i repeat the bottling it and regretting it each year.

Maybe this year i'll grow some balls.

I need a replacement for Nani (10.2) for next few weeks till I do my WC, got 0.8 in the bank.

Midfielders at the moment are -

    Bale, Walter, Sess, VDV, Nani

If you want to have 4 Chelsea players in your team, this is the good time for you to get G.Cahill, Ramires, Mata, and Sturridge.. 🙂

Is it right that the system will force us to get rid of 1 Chelsea on the next trade?

As Natt says, above: you can keep the 4 Chels - as long as you make no transfers each week. As soon as you make *any* transfer, it will make you take out one of the four Chels players, as well.
