As the second half of the season starts to kick in, Brendan Rodgers has turned to a familiar face to boost the Swansea midfield ranks. The acquisition of Gylfi Sigurdsson on loan from 1899 Hoffenheim until the end of the campaign reunites the duo, with Rodgers having previously managed the midfielder during his tenure as Reading boss.

The Icelandic international, voted Player of the Year by the Hoffenheim fans last term, missed much of his side’s pre-season and has subsequently failed to establish himself in the first-team, making a mere seven appearances this term. Given that the Bundesliga club paid in excess of £6.5m for his services, though, he’s clearly a highly-rated individual.

The idea, then, is to help Sigurdsson return to full fitness before he heads back to Germany at the end of the season. Priced at a very reasonable 5.0 by Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he has already made an impression. Coming off the bench last Sunday against Arsenal, he took less than twenty minutes of his debut to make a difference, setting up Danny Graham to fire home the winner in the 3-2 Liberty Stadium thriller.

The Statistics

Sigurdsson was handed trials at both Preston and Arsenal before signing on an Academy scholarship with Reading back in 2005. He made his debut for the Royals in the 2008-09 campaign but was farmed out on a couple of short-term loans that season, making a total of 20 appearances for Crewe and Shrewsbury, scoring 5 goals and providing a single assist.

He stayed at the Championship side for just over a couple of years, returning 19 goals and 10 assists in just 43 appearances before Hoffenheim snapped him up in August 2010. Sigurdsson went on to play 28 times in his first season in the German top-flight, scoring 9 times and producing 6 assists but his impact has been minimal at best this time round, with a single assist to his name.

The Prospects

If his cameo against the Gunners is indicative of what’s to come, Sigurdsson looks set to shine amidst Swansea’s passing game. Further analysis of the stats shows that Sigurdsson flourished in his only full season under Rodgers, producing 21 goals and 8 assists in 44 games. It’s no surprise, then, that the Swans boss couldn’t hide his delight upon completion of the move:

He is a terrific young player. When I went in to manage at Reading, he was a young player who had showed signs in pre-season, and I really liked him and stuck him in the team. He is a real threat with his shooting, and he understands the game – he is a clever boy. Our best chance was to get him on loan and it is a terrific move for the club. We will review it and look at it after the season finishes.

Sigurdsson will add a much-needed goal threat from the midfield area. Joe Allen, with 2 goals, is the only member of the Swansea central three to find the net this season and the new boy’s eye for goal means he’ll be played as the furthest forward of the trio in Rodgers’ 4-3-3. With an outstanding set-piece ability, he’s likely to be on corners and free-kicks too, as was illustrated in his brief cameo last weekend.

Whether Sigurdsson is ready for a start as he builds up his fitness is another matter entirely; it may well be Rodgers affords him game time from the bench until his stamina is ready for the frenetic pace of the Premier League. Rodgers has shown he has the intelligence and confidence to stick to his passing ethos and has a keen understanding of the type of player that makes his system click. His faith in Sigurdsson is absolute, suggesting the twenty-two year old could well help the Welsh side step up yet another level in the second half of the season.

Not the first time Ive seen "Barton" and "tool" in the same sentence. Does seem wasteful not to take a punt on one ranger with their fixtures. Id like to make helguson my 3rd striker and load up my midfield if sturridge news continues to be negative. But so much rumour about QPR signings and does Hughes prefer Helguson. I cant see why he doesnt deserve his spot. Hes been their only source of consistency in their attack all season.

Not on my WC yet mate. Got in Odem for Defoe who I had for the DGW on a gut feel. Then got in Torres for Ada this week as he's ineligible and I think Torres is the business.

I'm also 60 odd points behind in the mini league and I need me some differentials.

Ah looking good this WC draft.

I'm still in favor of Kun ahead of the Pig.
Vorm doesn't rotate too well with Krul - I'd get Schwarzer since you don't have Fulham defence anyways.
I'm not convinced with Huth but if you're feeling it, just do it 😉

Seems to be for the time being, likely to get dropped for Baird at some point but let's hope he pulls through these nice fixtures first 🙂

Looking good by the way. I do actually quite like the Lampard idea, him or Mata or even Ramires accompanying Sturridge for the next two weeks wouldn't be a bad idea.

    1) To say it's because they haven't won a trophy since 2006 is laughable given the global brand of Liverpool.

    2) This deal with Warrior Sports could be seen a year or 2 ago when they became a sponsorship partner. No one joins without getting something in return.

Why do you insist on having united coverage? Their fixtures are terrible, so there won't be an avalanche of goals - you won't be missing out on anything.

Torres is a 1 week punt before I WC. He has a very good fixture, and he came at a reasonable price.

Also, the old pearl holds true:"form is temporary but when you play Norwich, class is good enough."

as good as fulhams fixtures are in comparison, and i have dempsey in my WC, united will score more goals than fulham over the next 6 weeks, guaranteed. Despite tougher schedule, united still going to score 2 a game on average. (they are on about 2.5 now) Fulham average about a goal a game, hopefully increases to 1.5 over the same stretch. Still more goals in utd.

They went 7 games in a row with only scoring one goal. Most of it being weaker opposition than they will face now.
They lost to NC and Blackburn. Excuse me for not having the same confidence that you have in them scoring at least 2 goals against some of the best defences in the league.

Looks good, but I'd argue it's too strong - you're always going to have a dilemna of who to bench. If you're happy with that, then that's all well and good.

Could be a lot of points on the bench. I've got Surman to solve that problem at the moment.

    Hello All,

have the following team (used WC for GW 21):
    Vorm
    Richards Evans Simpson
    Silva Bale Dempsey Sess Moses
    RVP Aguero

    McAuley Caulker YAK

Team is a bit messed up because of YAK suspension and injury scares for McAuley, Richards.
    1) Is it crazy not to replace Yak and depend on RVP and Aguero till YAK is back?
    2) Originally wanted Shotton instead of McAuley for WC but was injured. Worth taking a hit to swap again for a 4pt hit?
    3) Any other comments for future transfers?

    Thanks!

Not meaning to sound spiteful (particularly to those Sturridge owners ;)) but I would not understand if AVB plays Sturridge ahead of of Torres given his best performance of the season for Chelsea (and probably his best at the club yet).

AVB should stick to the 4-5-1 formation against Norwich - more stable, and they seem to create lots of chances as well.

Your profile, top right - paste the URL from gameweek history page on FPL into the box and it'll be done.

If this doesn't make sense, go to the FAQs

I remember at the start of the season, Chelsea v Norwich (At Stamford Bridge), loads of people were saying "Torres captain, he is showing signs that he is returning back to his best!'. He got 2 points that game.

6 months and 1 league goal later

Norwich v Chelsea, loads of people are now saying "Torres captain, He is showing signs that he is returning back to his best'

What will happen? I think we all know....

I hovered over Torres in my WC team for about 4 seconds. Then I slapped my face and pulled myself together.

In fairness though last time he went and chopped through someone in all the excitement and got sent off 20mins into the game and then missed a further 3 games, and lost his place to Drogba.

In a week when loads are captaining Walters and Sessengon it's not a terrible shout.
