In the midst of the January wildcard season, many Fantasy managers are looking to shoehorn as many big guns into their revamped line up as possible. Every penny counts and plenty are on the hunt for regular scoring, cheap to mid-price third striker to free up funds for the likes of Robin Van Persie and Sergio Agüero.

Amongst the standout prospects in this category is Wolves striker Steven Fletcher. Since joining the Midlands club from Burnley in 2010, Fletcher has been crucial to Mick McCarthy’s attack, racking up an impressive 19 goals in 44 games.

This season he’s already scored nine goals, provided one assist and accumulated 13 bonus points for his efforts, with a brace against Sunderland in game week 14 among the pick of his performances. With his eye for goal, Fletcher has managed an average of 5.1 points per game, a ratio which puts the Scot in the top ten forwards this season.

So-called big clubs clearly hold no fear for Fletcher. He has now netted away to Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs, having added Harry Redknapp’s side to his list of top gun scalps last weekend, with a typical close-range finish. Indeed, Fletcher seems to thrive more on the road, scoring six of his nine goals away from the home comforts of Molineux.

If you’re on the lookout for a flair striker who can mesmerise defenders with a mazy dribble or unleash a furious lightning strike from 30 yards out, then Fletcher is not for you. In the wonderful world of Fantasy football, however, it doesn’t matter how they go in, as long as they hit the back of the net. What he lacks in style he makes up for in the consistency of a traditional goal poacher. All his goals this season have come from inside the box, with six of those headers.

For those still looking for a replacement for Newcastle’s Demba Ba, who is currently on African Cup of Nations duty, or seeking to transfer out Yakubu, who starts a three-match ban in gameweek 22 after his studs up challenge at the weekend, Fletcher seems to be a plum choice for that potentially lucrative third striker spot. Already, he has risen in price on the back of that goal at the Lane and, as the most transferred-in forward in the gameweek, is now on the verge of yet another price hike. Fletcher currently sits at a more than reasonable 6.0 but looks likely to move to 6.1 overnight.

A glance at their upcoming schedule shows the fixtures certainly fall kindly for Wolves. Over the next seven gameweeks, they play host to (AVL, LIV, WBA, BLA) and travel to (qpr, new, ful), and, as McCarthy looks to steer his team clear of the drop zone and further up the table, Fletcher appears a thoroughly enticing proposition.

thinking the same, but I bought Adebayor at 8.2 so would be costly to get him back. it would have to be a proper goodbye with tears and everything

Wouldn't get too hung up on value in the second half of the season. I'd cash in - you'll make up the difference if you pick a striker like Fletcher / Crouch whose value is going up anyway

You might get £0.2m back though, and then you might get another £0.2m in Feb when Ba is back, etc - as I say, I wouldn't get hung up on value for the second half of the season.

I agree with this. It plays a big part in the first half of the season, to set you up well for the second half. But as GW's go by now it gets less and less important.

exactly- it could take months to make the 0.6 profit that would give me the option (all other things being equal) to get Ade back in.

I'm not hung up on value. I;m talking about something different - switching players that have unrealised profit, in and out.

      1) I would, but it's very open this week
      2) You shouldn't bench Bale - especially with Kompany (and unlikely but possibly Micah out). I'f you're on a WC, I'd have a rethink because you're always going to have a tough choice for who to bench.
      3) Looks alright. I'm going 2 big hitters but I can see your logic. Problem is, as above - who to bench.

a complicating factor in the cahill situation is ivanovic. he returned to training yesterday and you'd fancy him to oust bosingwa. here's the only games this season luiz and ivanovic have been fit together:
    leverkeusen W 2-0
    genk W 5-0
    everton W 1-2
    liverpool L 1-2
leverkeusen L 1-2 (was 1-0 chelsea on 68mins when luiz went off)
    wolves W 3-0
    newcastle W 0-3
    valencia W 3-0
    8 games, 3 goals conceded

Was thinking Cahill for my WC team but Ivano is certainly an issue there. I see Ivanovic as probably nailed on since he can play RB really well, but there is also someone saying that Luiz could play there as well. I will wait a few weeks before getting Cahill in

for me if you're confident cahill will start he's an absolute no-brainer. where do you ever see a top 4 defender with as much of a goal threat as cahill for 5.2mil? they don't exist.
when bosingwa is out the side they are a top 4 defence before anyone brings up that point about this season.

It could be seeing that AVB has never been a fan of Alex and has thus just sold him. I think Terry, Cole and Ivano will start most games and it's yet to see whether Cahill will. I think Cahill is likely to start though

            oops, misplaced reply

i think it’s a simple case of losing a centre back, buying a centre back and no one can be sure either way whether he’ll be the preferred choice or not. either way i think he’ll make his debut in the FA cup game next week, if ivanovic wasn’t/isn’t back this week then i think the temptation to put cahill straight in against the aerially impressive holt and morison would/will be much greater

requires just as much discipline as being a centre back. he's been a centre back all his career, think it's just little tweaks that need making as opposed to a whole position change. none of the chelsea players have looked comfortable with the high line

You really think it requires just as much discipline? CB being the last vestige in defence and all? I think Luiz is a terrible, terrible CB. He simply does not have the temperament or the positional awareness for it. I do believe he's a good footballer though, so I can see him working as a DM with a bit of freedom.

really disagree. he was fine last season barring 1 game v man utd and 1 rash challenge on dempsey, he even picked up premier league player of the month last february, although that was blatantly partly down to lescott syndrome of scoring a couple of goals.
difference between this season and last beign the high defensive line and jose bosingwa
