In the midst of the January wildcard season, many Fantasy managers are looking to shoehorn as many big guns into their revamped line up as possible. Every penny counts and plenty are on the hunt for regular scoring, cheap to mid-price third striker to free up funds for the likes of Robin Van Persie and Sergio Agüero.

Amongst the standout prospects in this category is Wolves striker Steven Fletcher. Since joining the Midlands club from Burnley in 2010, Fletcher has been crucial to Mick McCarthy’s attack, racking up an impressive 19 goals in 44 games.

This season he’s already scored nine goals, provided one assist and accumulated 13 bonus points for his efforts, with a brace against Sunderland in game week 14 among the pick of his performances. With his eye for goal, Fletcher has managed an average of 5.1 points per game, a ratio which puts the Scot in the top ten forwards this season.

So-called big clubs clearly hold no fear for Fletcher. He has now netted away to Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs, having added Harry Redknapp’s side to his list of top gun scalps last weekend, with a typical close-range finish. Indeed, Fletcher seems to thrive more on the road, scoring six of his nine goals away from the home comforts of Molineux.

If you’re on the lookout for a flair striker who can mesmerise defenders with a mazy dribble or unleash a furious lightning strike from 30 yards out, then Fletcher is not for you. In the wonderful world of Fantasy football, however, it doesn’t matter how they go in, as long as they hit the back of the net. What he lacks in style he makes up for in the consistency of a traditional goal poacher. All his goals this season have come from inside the box, with six of those headers.

For those still looking for a replacement for Newcastle’s Demba Ba, who is currently on African Cup of Nations duty, or seeking to transfer out Yakubu, who starts a three-match ban in gameweek 22 after his studs up challenge at the weekend, Fletcher seems to be a plum choice for that potentially lucrative third striker spot. Already, he has risen in price on the back of that goal at the Lane and, as the most transferred-in forward in the gameweek, is now on the verge of yet another price hike. Fletcher currently sits at a more than reasonable 6.0 but looks likely to move to 6.1 overnight.

A glance at their upcoming schedule shows the fixtures certainly fall kindly for Wolves. Over the next seven gameweeks, they play host to (AVL, LIV, WBA, BLA) and travel to (qpr, new, ful), and, as McCarthy looks to steer his team clear of the drop zone and further up the table, Fletcher appears a thoroughly enticing proposition.

Sturridge or Bale for the bench? No choice, has to be one of these two ( or perhaps Valenciam though I'd rather not)

First WC attempts which is better?

    A
    VORM KENNY
    Kompany Caulker Simpson Kelly SHOTTON
    Valencia Walters Bale Silva McClean
    Rvp Aguero FLETCHER

    B
    SORENSON LINDEGAARD
    Kompany Caulker Simpson Kelly ENRIQUE
    Valencia Walters Bale Silva McClean
    Rvp Aguero GRAHAM

B seems to weaken the team for the dubious purpose of fitting in Enrique but then it does give a better balance to the backline.

Also McClean or Dyer for that last midfield slot?

Unfortunately Sim>San saves me nothing because I've had him for ages. If I did Valencia>Sess and Caulker/Simpson>Enrique I'd have to download Vorm probably to Sorenson, leaving me either with no Newcastle or Swansea defenders and 3 Stoke and 2 Sunderland. Not ideal! I could do it if I downgraded Valencia some more, say to Dyer?

Valencia a good pick. Playing brilliantly. Evans great cheap cover. Think I am leaving him for now, but an obvious eye towards him as fixtures improve.

Still toying with fitting Valencia in, but would mean pushing Dempsey aside and I'm really liking his chances of goals in the coming weeks.

Silva most of the times do well in big games, so i am leaning towards him instead of Dempsey. Might not captain Baines in the end but none of the options in my team at the moment seem reliable for captain this week.

Feel free BA. I had Kompany pencilled in for my WC but am fairly happy with my team for the next couple of weeks (well you should be, shouldn't you?) so will have a FT to use next week anyway. I'll probably dump Sess the week after unless he tears it up.

    My current WC thoughts:

    Krul, Vorm
Simpson, Taylor R, Shotton, Kompany, Jose Enrique
    Bale, Dempsy, McClean, Walters, Silva
    Fletcher, Aguero, Van Persie

    Decisions to make:

    A) Too much Newcastle defence? Can have Evans instead of Simpson
    B) Kompany or Richards
    C) Dempsy or Valencia

    Appreciate any thoughts on these

      A) Risky but could work out. Raylor owners luck is going to run out eventually when he returns to his rightful place on the bench so watch out (maybe Santon/Williamson if you want to treble up still, would also save funds).

      B) Kompany

      C) Dempsey - Man U's fixtures aren't very good until GW28ish

Nope. Unless you are already full on City coverage. Their fixtures are so good, it is hard to imagine Kompany & Richards not doing better.

Already used wildcard but I'll be bringing him in at some point. Not convinced by Arsenal for clean sheets but his goalscoring record is good enough for me.

Think he could be an option. Feel I need some Arsenal coverage and none of their midfielders are good value or high scoring and am maintaing my stubborn approach when it comes to not having RVP (substitute stupid in for stubborn if you want!)

I would just leave him until he stops scoring. I know their fixtures get harder, but he has been so solid.

Maybe Senderos. Otherwise Richards. Tough choice, for sure.

Yep, Senderos. I have that 4 (altho Huth, not Shotton) and am benching Sendy.

I'd bench Senderos. Liverpool and Stoke both have a good opportunity for clean sheets and Richards has decent shout at attacking points. All 4 are good picks but Senderos for me.

Out. I know his form has slowed, but still wasn't keen to ditch him as points will come back at some point. But better options exist right now.

I'd get rid of Van der Vaart as well while your at it. At this moment in time Spurs are all about Bale and Lennon.

Getting rid, not sure who for yet though - Fletcher has burnt me in the past, maybe Zamora.

I'm also getting rid of Bale in my WC 24 unlike most

Okay dudes just about to click on my wildcard to these dodgy fellas.

    Krul/Mignolet

    Richards/Enrique/Kelly/Santon/Caulker

    Bale/Silva/Valencia/Dempsey/Walters

    RVP/Aguero/Grahams

Any thoughts on why I should not do this? 😛
