In the midst of the January wildcard season, many Fantasy managers are looking to shoehorn as many big guns into their revamped line up as possible. Every penny counts and plenty are on the hunt for regular scoring, cheap to mid-price third striker to free up funds for the likes of Robin Van Persie and Sergio Agüero.

Amongst the standout prospects in this category is Wolves striker Steven Fletcher. Since joining the Midlands club from Burnley in 2010, Fletcher has been crucial to Mick McCarthy’s attack, racking up an impressive 19 goals in 44 games.

This season he’s already scored nine goals, provided one assist and accumulated 13 bonus points for his efforts, with a brace against Sunderland in game week 14 among the pick of his performances. With his eye for goal, Fletcher has managed an average of 5.1 points per game, a ratio which puts the Scot in the top ten forwards this season.

So-called big clubs clearly hold no fear for Fletcher. He has now netted away to Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs, having added Harry Redknapp’s side to his list of top gun scalps last weekend, with a typical close-range finish. Indeed, Fletcher seems to thrive more on the road, scoring six of his nine goals away from the home comforts of Molineux.

If you’re on the lookout for a flair striker who can mesmerise defenders with a mazy dribble or unleash a furious lightning strike from 30 yards out, then Fletcher is not for you. In the wonderful world of Fantasy football, however, it doesn’t matter how they go in, as long as they hit the back of the net. What he lacks in style he makes up for in the consistency of a traditional goal poacher. All his goals this season have come from inside the box, with six of those headers.

For those still looking for a replacement for Newcastle’s Demba Ba, who is currently on African Cup of Nations duty, or seeking to transfer out Yakubu, who starts a three-match ban in gameweek 22 after his studs up challenge at the weekend, Fletcher seems to be a plum choice for that potentially lucrative third striker spot. Already, he has risen in price on the back of that goal at the Lane and, as the most transferred-in forward in the gameweek, is now on the verge of yet another price hike. Fletcher currently sits at a more than reasonable 6.0 but looks likely to move to 6.1 overnight.

A glance at their upcoming schedule shows the fixtures certainly fall kindly for Wolves. Over the next seven gameweeks, they play host to (AVL, LIV, WBA, BLA) and travel to (qpr, new, ful), and, as McCarthy looks to steer his team clear of the drop zone and further up the table, Fletcher appears a thoroughly enticing proposition.

R Taylor played in the middle when Cabaye went off injured, he won't keep his place there. Cabaye is meant to be fit for Fulham and also takes free kicks.

R Taylor is good value when he plays for his attacking threat but I think he's at risk of being rotated quite a lot in the second half of the season and just filling in as and when.

Taylor for me. He started wide midfield last time out and I think he's every chance of continuing in that role. He's good for attacking pints and still gets 4 for a clean sheet. If you can afford it do it.

Why is everyone going Santon over Simpson?

Simpson's the only player in the NUFC squad who has started every game this season. He's in the Top3 for the most no. of successful crosses for a defender. And he's 0.2 cheaper than Santon if you got him at the start of the season.

Assist potential for Santon is all I've heard as an argument, but your successful crosses stat puts that to rest.

Well, he's the same as Santon if you got him at the start of the season. It's a free swap for those on wildcards. But I'm with you, no reason to take him out since it seems unlikely he'll lose his place.

Simpson has played 1876 minutes and got 72 points scoring a point every 26 minutes.

Santon has played 464 minutes and got 22 points scoring a point every 21 minutes.

I have neither and am going to downgrade R.Taylor to one of them over to coming weeks, I am however still unsure as to which.

Bit unfair to use the number of successful crosses against Santon, Simpson has played 4x more minutes than Santon. I've gone Santon because I havn't had Simpson from the beginning, but even if they were the same price, I'd still rather have Davide, I think he's a better player.

I tried something different I love it, Elnino! I tried to ask you about it last night, but you were gone.

I have found that even when I set up my ideal front 8, I still have so much money. I also think I need at least one city defender, and that there is a chance that having two would be worth not having aguero. In addition, that would allow me to get Rooney...I just can't decide if Rooney is going to do well during his bad fixtures.

Cahill is there because he just might be too good of a deal not to have. Huth is there because I like him to score a bundle over the next 6 The cheapest 'sure way' into Stokes defense is 5.2 ShawX, so the extra .4 seems worth it to me.

Haha fair enough Newman! I love the idea of 2 City defenders as I'd told you too 2 days back but I doubt I'd do it 😉 Frankly don’t trust more than 1 City attacker for the moment. And Silva’s ever reliable for that spot. Also, I see you’ve slotted Rooney in which could be sweet. Looking good the 2nd team.

I’d have Enrique over Huth every day of the week irrespective of fixtures. I don’t trust Stoke’s defence against easier oppositions. They tend to lack that drive to keep CS but if you’re feeling it, go for it.

Midfield looks good for now, but you'd be wanting 2-3 of them out soon! Firm believer of 3 big mids, which a heavy defence disallows you to have.

Good mix of form + fixtures too!

Who in midfield would I want out soon? Just Sess surely, right?

Wit hall due respect to JE, Liverpool have only one more CS than Stoke to. That, of course, ignores if its against 'easy opposition' but I still think that stands. Add to that Huth is better offensively.

If I shorten Huth down to Senderos or shotton, or someone like that, and get Dempsey in for Walters, would that be a good enough 'big' midfield three?

If I were you, I'd consider

              Huth > Senderos
              Sess > Dempsey/Valencia
              Dyer > McClean

Walters is a cheeky lil OOP player - keep him for the good fixtures I guess.

But Newman if you're 'feeling' Huth (like many people on the site claim to), you should stick by it 😉 Not convinced though.

Who do you think is more likely to keep a clean sheet or score more save points with each team playing the other?

    Mignolet (H)
    or
    Vorm (A)

Even though Sunderland are at home and playing well I'm still not convinced they'll keel a clean sheet against Swansea who are also playing well at the moment. Got a feeling that Vorm will get more save points than mignolet.

I'm going Vorm, mainly because Fulham have a better strike-force than Sunderland. Also could mean more save points. And Swansea dont usually let too many goals in, even away from home (apart from the obvious couple of big defeats).

Purely because of Sunderland finishing last game, I would go for Vorm. He should rack up save points because sunderland will create plenty. But this is unlikely. 🙂

Taking inspiration from this article, this is WC team I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on:
    Vorm; Lindegaard
Shotton; Kompany; Evans J; Caulker; Jose Enrique
    Silva; Walters; Dempsey; Bale; Nani
    Fletcher; Van Persie; Sturridge
    leaves 0.1 in the bank
Would appreciate thoughts, perhaps downgrade Nani to Valencia? Would leave me with 2.3 to play with.

Hmm, interesting point. I'm reluctant to transfer out the 3rd highest scoring midfielder, but I suppose if I then get more points by upgrading elsewhere it works .. just can't see where I'd spend the 2.3 ATM. Save it for when Ba returns I suppose!?!

Nani's played 1625 minutes scoring 118 points, scoring a point every 14 minutes.

Valencia's played 943 minutes scoring 59 points, scoring a point every 17 minutes.

That gives Nani 6.4 points scored a game and Valencia 5.3 points a game.

Question is is that 2.4 more that Nani costs worth the extra 1.1 point a game or could a better player elsewhere exceed that.

    My team for this week

    Vorm

    Raylor Brown, Jones

    Silva, Bale, Nani, Donovan

    RvP, Odem, Sturridge

    Friedel, McAuley, BAE, Tiote

I have 1 FT and 0.9 in bank, but given the fixtures this week am tempted to save it and take 2 1 week punts before I wc, unless anyone can think of any 2 week punt worth taking. Don't see the point in changing my keepers now as I'll play Friedel at home Wigan, so may as well wait.

avoiding Walters as he's at OT next week, and he's useless away. Sess is a possibility, but I think Donovan could do something vs Blackburn (it's one of my planned 1 week punts next week) but it was on my list. I've considered losing Jones - Skrtel, Donovan - Sess and Odem - Bellamy, but none really excite me. Fancied a 1 week punt on Henry vs Bolton next week, but if he's not fit that may go out the window.

True I suppose. Fulham have two plum home fixtures. Odem to Zamora?
          Tiote to Murphy (Klaxon)

you can't klaxon it yourself, especially not if you rob me off the opportunity to do this

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2VhB7vaZI0

That Tiote transfer is unaffordable, i wouldn't call Newcastle at home a plum fixture they're no mugs defensively and Fulham don't score many. Only striking option I can see is Fletcher (and even he has LIV next week) and it robs me of my Henry punt. Only other option is Bellamy, and he seems too much of a rotation risk.

Anyone worried that having JEvans in your squad, mainly because he is a bargain, makes you want to play him every game because he's MU? Even though they are looking a bit leaky these days. Put it this way, would you have a 6m MU defender right now? It's kind of irrelevant what price he is. I'm thinking there are potentially better options around the same price who could outscore Evans over the next 6 GWs, then bring in Evans in GW28,

I think a bad manU fixture is equal to a cheap defender with a good fixture.
4.4 is too good to be true, but im going with Lindegaard instead

you'd still take him as United will still keep more cs than most, the reason people pick Evans is that he is cheap enough that you feel ok leaving him on the bench, the same could not be said of Jones or Evra.

Also if and when he gets rotated youre not as annoyed as if youd spent 6.5 - 7 mil on Evra/Jones/Smalling

well Evra will not get rotated, he's only our only real LB, (Fabio can;t be relied on to stay fit) but like I said if he has a tough fixture you'll feel obliged to play him (as I do with Jones this week)

Need some help selecting my back four.

    Krul/Vorm
    Enrique/Richards/Evans/BAE/Shotton
    Bale, Silva, Sessegnon, Dempsey (Moses)
    RvP, Rooney, Fletcher

Think I will go for Enrique and Shotton if he is fit. But the last defender? Richards? And leaning slightly towards Krul in goal. Sound about right?
