There are few players who can claim as intimate a familiarity with the sublime and the ridiculous as Joey Barton. At times, his tenacious tackling and classy passing dominates games, at others his fiery temper scuppers the prospects of his own unhappy side. With his undoubted talent too often eclipsed by a penchant for self-destruction, Barton’s recent dismissal for a headbutt only furnished a minor footnote to a rap sheet already long enough to be visible from space.

Barton was a popular budget option last term, garnering 131 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points at an initial price of 4.5, as he pulled the strings at Newcastle through a season mercifully free from controversy. A price hike to 6.0 this time round, coupled with a summer move to a QPR side in which Adel Taarabt was first in line for set-plays, considerably dented his appeal as this campaign kicked off. Although Taarabt’s fall from grace under Neil Warnock saw dead-ball duties promptly claimed by Barton, he was unable to recreate last season’s productivity as 2011 wound down with a whimper for the slumping London outfit.

Warnock’s sacking just before a kindly run of fixtures may strike new boss Mark Hughes as ironic, given his own acrimonious exit from Manchester City under similar circumstances in 2009, and, with money to spend, the Welshman will be resolved to grasp this opportunity to turn around QPR’s sinking season.

With transfer rumours quashed and Barton confirmed as retaining the club captaincy it seems logical to infer that he will be central to Hughes’ plans, but with set-pieces the key to his appeal it may be Hughes’ attitude towards the enigmatic absentee Taarabt that ultimately determines Barton’s long-term FPL potential under the new regime.

A well-taken goal followed by the aforementioned headbutt on January 2nd affords a timely reminder of the precarious balance of risk and reward that attends investment in QPR’s captain, but if Hughes’ stern leadership can keep Barton in line he has the price (5.8) and the pedigree to suggest strong value upon his return from suspension this weekend.

With QPR enjoying the kindest run of fixtures of any Premier League side between now and March (WIG avl WOL bla FUL EVE), many wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers will be tempted to take the plunge on their mercurial maverick in the coming weeks. What’s the worst that could happen?

I've got rid of him with my Jan WC - I just can't see Swansea having the same sort of defensive record in the 2nd half of the season, so I'm happy with Caulker as my sole coverage.

I will probably have Hart and Lindegaard. When he is gonna have penalty save it is gonna be tough time. Well it is very tough decision. But he is delivering 3 pts recently. There is a chance to gain some advantage on the others who have him.

I'm going with Krul and Mignolet. Krul is a must have for the second half of the season, imo. The fixtures are good, and they are in great defensive form.

It goes without being said that Mignolet rotates well with him and his fixtures are kind too. With MON having a habit of building from the back, I am gonna go with him.

Most obvious option would be Ade -> a striker punt, but that depends on if you want to keep Ade for a long haul as subject to when you bought him it would cost you more to bring him back in again later.

I'm on my WC, and I'm seriously thinking about bringing in John O'Shea. I have 6.7 to spend on a defender but don't fancy the fixtures of any of the players in that price bracket for the next GW or two. O'Shea has SWA & NOR at home and is the most nailed-on of Sunderland's back four atm. Once those are out of the way, I upgrade to Richards or Kompany (who should then both be available) in time for their good run of fixtures.

This makes sense to me but I'm having trouble convincing myself of any plan involving John O'Shea. Is this good logic or have I missed something?

After Al-Habsi > Mignolet this wk, it would leave me with:

    Mignolet
    Enrique Caulker Shotton
    Nani Mata(c) Dempsey Walters(vc) Silva
    RvP Agbonlahor

    Subs: Vorm Adebayor Simpson McAuley

    Comments fire at will!

      that midfield is dreamy.

Agbonlahor could still work pretty well, I like the gamble! May as well put Adebayor first sub, weird things happen with the bench sometimes.

Yeah but I have only one big gun, and whilst my midfield is not quite as dreamy, my backline rapes yours.

          Krul//Mignolet
          Baines//Richards//Sktrl//Cahill//Caulker
          Silva//Valencia//Bale//Dempsey//Sessegnon
          RVP//Graham//Best

1M in the bank. So there must be a way to sort that defence a little.

    Hi guys! 🙂
I want you to answer some questions for me. 😉

    This i s my lineup
    Vorm
    Skrtel-Richards-Shotton
    Valencia-Dempsey-Gerrard(C)-Sessegnon
    Fletcher-RVP-Crouch(VC)

1.Is my captain choice right? I need to get some differential points 🙂
    2. Is it right to bench Bale?
    3. What do you think about my forward line this weeek?
    4. Any other changes i should do?

Suit yourself with which questions you want to answer. 😛

      3. It wouldn't be my choice, I can understand Fletcher and RVP but I would get rid of Crouch!

Benching Bale is a massive risk imo... if he goes out and smashes City (which he is capable of doing) then you wont only lose the points from him... but your opponents will almost certainly benefit and you end up losing double...

Gerrard is as good a punt on the captains armband as any in your team... certainly differential potential...

Personally i would lose Crouch altogether.... just not impressed by him at all...

Well he's a quality player that can do it against nearly antone. But he's been out of form and scring low so I am not so sure about having VDV.

The problem with VDV is that he's a confidence player, soon as he starts scoring he just goes on a run. I would rather Dempsey!

Another great one Stilicho.....always tempted by Barton, but then he goes and does something silly like ...or whatever the song says.

Worth also noting that Barton is possibly the only Premiership player with a good taste in music. Always impressed with his tweets, combining a love of new groups like Metronomy and Joy Formidable with a traditional indie music staple like The Smiths.

I wouldn't be so sure. Barton is enigmatic it's hard to predict how he'll get on with anybody. I got the impression that he found Warnock a little lightweight. Barton loves hard training as well...all part of his recovery from being a violent drunk fool. They could get on. Hughes afterall got on well with Robbie Savage...another gobby player, although admittedly a more well balanced one.

    Cech
    Luiz - Cahill - Terry
    Ramires - Romeu - Meireles - Cole
    Mata
    Sturridge - Torres

Would allow him to slot Cahill in, and would suit Mata nicely in the hole and allow Sturridge to play up front and give more direct support to Torres?

    Stranger things have happened.

          cheers

i will have sorenson playing too, although huth is long overdue a goal

think cashley could be a threat, but also skrtel looks very dangerous from set plays

is there any stand out suggestion at 7.4 mil or below that i havnt noticed?

Cheers mate. It's tough to know who to sacrifice. I'm thinking of lining up Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Barton, Mclean then switching McClean to Moses in 2 weeks, but it's tough leaving out Sess and Walters for their home games, and not having Tony V.

Yeah im on WC at min with, Lamps,Silva,Valencia,Sess,Dyer.
Think Sess is only way to get Joey in. Might be worth the risk though. Always a tough decision to drop someone in form.

I am slightly concerned by that in all truth however the next few fixtures placed ahead of them dont do them any favours...the team i have at the mo works for the next 6, after that i can asses both teams and their stand out players then look to filter them in.

Best for the forseeable future. On wildcard and fair to say my team is gonna be top heavy.

youd want ones that rotate well
