There are few players who can claim as intimate a familiarity with the sublime and the ridiculous as Joey Barton. At times, his tenacious tackling and classy passing dominates games, at others his fiery temper scuppers the prospects of his own unhappy side. With his undoubted talent too often eclipsed by a penchant for self-destruction, Barton’s recent dismissal for a headbutt only furnished a minor footnote to a rap sheet already long enough to be visible from space.

Barton was a popular budget option last term, garnering 131 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points at an initial price of 4.5, as he pulled the strings at Newcastle through a season mercifully free from controversy. A price hike to 6.0 this time round, coupled with a summer move to a QPR side in which Adel Taarabt was first in line for set-plays, considerably dented his appeal as this campaign kicked off. Although Taarabt’s fall from grace under Neil Warnock saw dead-ball duties promptly claimed by Barton, he was unable to recreate last season’s productivity as 2011 wound down with a whimper for the slumping London outfit.

Warnock’s sacking just before a kindly run of fixtures may strike new boss Mark Hughes as ironic, given his own acrimonious exit from Manchester City under similar circumstances in 2009, and, with money to spend, the Welshman will be resolved to grasp this opportunity to turn around QPR’s sinking season.

With transfer rumours quashed and Barton confirmed as retaining the club captaincy it seems logical to infer that he will be central to Hughes’ plans, but with set-pieces the key to his appeal it may be Hughes’ attitude towards the enigmatic absentee Taarabt that ultimately determines Barton’s long-term FPL potential under the new regime.

A well-taken goal followed by the aforementioned headbutt on January 2nd affords a timely reminder of the precarious balance of risk and reward that attends investment in QPR’s captain, but if Hughes’ stern leadership can keep Barton in line he has the price (5.8) and the pedigree to suggest strong value upon his return from suspension this weekend.

With QPR enjoying the kindest run of fixtures of any Premier League side between now and March (WIG avl WOL bla FUL EVE), many wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers will be tempted to take the plunge on their mercurial maverick in the coming weeks. What’s the worst that could happen?

    Just reading the scribbles there, everyone must be gutted that Ramsey's place is under threat with Wilshere's return, he has been fantasy gold for most of us this season! 😉 So much promise, no return. In week 6 or 7 or something I took Arteta OUT and brought Ramsey IN, was a terrible decision and Arteta kept picking up points from that point on, well, compared to Ramsey he kept picking up points.

    No transfers for me this week, appreciate the fact FFS now has more writers, means more articles to mull over while I drink my morning Joe!

      I wouldn't call him fantasy gold at all, and this is coming from an Arsenal fan. I'm of the school of thought that he should have been loaned out after coming back from his injury. His place should be in danger, for being in such a position where so much needs/needed to go through him his pass rate, completion rate, vision and decision making aren't close to where they need to be to justify him...this is from a FF perspective as well. One ultimately affects the other.

        Damn, he knows that you all know that he knows we know he can't defend...guy moves to midfield (for however long) and he still can't get any love. How many times can a man's fantasy football obituary be written prematurely?

      I think Zamora is a decent mid-priced alternative to Fletcher. Both have back-to-back home games, but Zamora's are better, plus 3 at home of next 4.

      Fletcher (VIL, LIV, qpr, WBROM)

      Zamora (NEW, WBROM, citch, STO)

      Valencia - playing the best ever for Man U, never been so effective nearly every game. Pretty much a guaranteed starter if fit.

      Walters - probably the worst kind of midfield player ever playing OOP (no talent whatsoever - arguable I know but I really dislike his style) - but I acknowledge he scores pens and make a few assists - but seriously, how many more pens will Stoke get? The other major issue is, Stoke are absolutely rubbish away (attack very little), and Walters therefore does not benefit, and therefore hasn't scored many points in his away games.

        Walters - scored 5 in the league (I believe 4/5 are pens)... pretty much all he has to offer and the pens Stoke have been getting will dry up sooner rather than later

          To further back up my points:

            Well he has so few shots, he must decline IMO. The next is better for Tony V Imo and then I will reassess. Leaning to Tony for now. If the team is getting penalties they are gonna keep coming, not drying up. I remember Chelsea always get about 10 penalties every season. Stoke are always making crowd in the box so more chance for them to earn penalties. H,mmm...

      Prob agree with Mr White - Silence's stats are fairly conclusive, but with Man Utds tricky fixtures maybe Walters, with his 4 home games in 6, is a worthwile punt - but then keep the funds to swap to Tony V afterwards.

        Hippo's got it, for me. Walker far better att potential and probably better CS potential over Evans (albeit, limited CS for both). MC vs Spurs likely to be the tighter of the two games.

        And home adv says McClean all day over the 'Ten Commandments Giver'.

          I kinda agree with your argument for Walker, except that City like wrecking havoc in some of the best defences in the league.

          Funny you should say that. All of moses 2 goals + 2 assists have come in the last 3-4 away games.

          Thoughts?

            El Nino, Moses away stats show, if nothing else, how mis-leading they can be. For me, low-priced Mids, you play the percentages, and that says home player over away. If it goes pear-shaped, I think you can satisfy yourself that it was the reasoned call.

            Walker's gone a bit off the boil (att wise) lately but even against Citeh he'll be looking to get forward, especially if Spurs play on the break. And with Savic in the middle, MC don't look the sure thing they normally do with Komps.

            There's no way MC will be on a scoring spree against Tottenham, when's the last time that happened? What? Oh! 🙂

    I am 2 GWs before my wildcard. Need to bring Sess or/and Demps in.

    Front 8:
    Bale vdV Walters Mata Dyer
    RvP Studge (Ade)

    1FT and 0.8 in the bank gives several options:
    1) Mata -> Sess
    2) Mata -> Demps
    3) Mata+Dyer -> Sess+Demps (-4 pts.)

    I don't believe Mata will produce sufficient points during these two away games to justify not selling him.

    The plan is to do 1) (Mata -> Sess) now and possibly Dyer -> Demps in GW23.

    Am I wrong somewhere?

    I'm contemplating Fletcher for captain this week ahead of RVP. But feeling very jittery about it. Wolves have scored in there last 8 league games. Fletcher has scored in 5 of those games and assisted in 1. Villa on the other hand have conceded goals in 6 of the last 8.

    Any other takers on Fletcher?
