We knew it was coming, we just didn’t quite expect it against one of the best defences in the league. We’ve screamed about the merits of Clint Dempsey during this wildcard window for several weeks – top pick in our Wildcard Watchlist article, climbing to second in the Watchlist this week, in the Scout Picks again – we couldn’t have laid it on any thicker. Returns were due, but three goals against the Newcastle defence, albeit without the protection of Cheik Tiote, was an unexpected bonanza.

A fortnight ago, Dempsey signposted such form: a hat-trick against Charlton in the FA Cup signaled the intent. With fixtures falling kindly and our own ICT Index forever indicating that Demspey was a top ten Fantasy attacking performer, it was likely that even stronger Fantasy returns were overdue.

Today’s three goals took Dempsey to nine for the season – level with Frank Lampard as the top goalscorer from midfield. Unlike Lampard, Dempsey’s ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game is set to soar. Indeed, having been subject to over 50,000 net transfers in prior to this morning’s deadline, Dempsey’s bandwagon is already rolling at pace. With Gameweek 23’s deadline extended until the Tuesday, there’s little doubt that we’ll see Dempsey’s FPL price rocket up from the current level 8.5 – his price tag at the start of the season.

There will of course be doubters – those who now look at Dempsey as a ship that’s sailed. A move to acquire the American now will surely be chasing points?

While it’s true that Dempsey’s best day in the Premier League may have now passed, every indication points to continued profits. Martin Jol’s side have underachieved thus far – with fixtures falling nicely for them, handing them beatable opponents at the Cottage over the next nine Gameweeks, further Fulham goal flurries could be on the cards.

Regardless, Dempsey remains one of the most potent goal threats in the league. Wayward at times, but always at the races when it comes to raw goal attempts, he’s fulfilled his potential in a big way today.

If, like me, you missed it, you should consider swallowing that wounded pride. Dempsey has the platform to cause more damage to your season.

Having sat smugly on my wildcard for a week too long, only to watch him grab his big payday ahead of schedule, I’m all too aware of the dangers of chasing points, but not stubborn enough to turn my back on Dempsey’s potency for another Gameweek.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Tricky to be playing the w/c in 23 though. 24 sees City's fix improve, Utd's deteriote and you can keep Ade for the WIG game.

I know - luckily there's no Ade dilemma as he is dead to me.
Going to be packing the side with City players, maybe 1/2 United players due to their customary title charge. Chasing goals will be the main concern with Arsenal and Tottenham not really having a promising schedule.

Ok now when the dust setled I am really struggling to decide to have 2 City defenders Hart and Kompany + Silva or the classic one Hart/Kompany, Silva and KUn,

To Kun or not to Kun. GW 26-7 scares me, when he is the only obvious captain.

P.S. Too bad I didn't listen to myself and didn't sell Fletcher this morning. His points are absolutely not predictable

The midfield plays from such a depth that they can't properly support the striker, which would be OK if you played the ball out wide further up the pitch. Downing can't overlap and Bellamy looked isolated.

I watched them in the second half against Bolton today. I think the problem is that the gap between the defensive and midfield lines was far too wide. That's why they couldn't get service to the forwards, it wasn't even getting from defence to midfield. It's also why they kept losing the ball in dangerous areas.

In fact around the 80 minute mark Kenny was gesturing at his players by pushing his hands together, as if he wanted them to close the gap. He could have just been very frustrated too.

im willing to have mcclean as my bench midfielder for the foreseeable future as hes an absolute bargain if he's gonna play every week and look dangerous.

Thought about getting Keane in but Im not going all out chasing price rises for the sake of the odd 0.1m. too much effort

Fair enough if you can't make the effort, but think of all the times you were 0.1m out on the transfer you wanted to make...

Plus this is my last WC.

Shouldn't be too much work - basically what I'm doing is transferring in as many dream teamers as possible and catching the kneejerk rises. I don't want most of them anyway, and the ones I want, I'll keep.

Lindy is a bargain as long as he remains first choice. Evanms certainly so. He seems to be first choice now, and is cheap enough to bench if he has a difficult fixture and not to worry about if he doesn't play.
