We knew it was coming, we just didn’t quite expect it against one of the best defences in the league. We’ve screamed about the merits of Clint Dempsey during this wildcard window for several weeks – top pick in our Wildcard Watchlist article, climbing to second in the Watchlist this week, in the Scout Picks again – we couldn’t have laid it on any thicker. Returns were due, but three goals against the Newcastle defence, albeit without the protection of Cheik Tiote, was an unexpected bonanza.

A fortnight ago, Dempsey signposted such form: a hat-trick against Charlton in the FA Cup signaled the intent. With fixtures falling kindly and our own ICT Index forever indicating that Demspey was a top ten Fantasy attacking performer, it was likely that even stronger Fantasy returns were overdue.

Today’s three goals took Dempsey to nine for the season – level with Frank Lampard as the top goalscorer from midfield. Unlike Lampard, Dempsey’s ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game is set to soar. Indeed, having been subject to over 50,000 net transfers in prior to this morning’s deadline, Dempsey’s bandwagon is already rolling at pace. With Gameweek 23’s deadline extended until the Tuesday, there’s little doubt that we’ll see Dempsey’s FPL price rocket up from the current level 8.5 – his price tag at the start of the season.

There will of course be doubters – those who now look at Dempsey as a ship that’s sailed. A move to acquire the American now will surely be chasing points?

While it’s true that Dempsey’s best day in the Premier League may have now passed, every indication points to continued profits. Martin Jol’s side have underachieved thus far – with fixtures falling nicely for them, handing them beatable opponents at the Cottage over the next nine Gameweeks, further Fulham goal flurries could be on the cards.

Regardless, Dempsey remains one of the most potent goal threats in the league. Wayward at times, but always at the races when it comes to raw goal attempts, he’s fulfilled his potential in a big way today.

If, like me, you missed it, you should consider swallowing that wounded pride. Dempsey has the platform to cause more damage to your season.

Having sat smugly on my wildcard for a week too long, only to watch him grab his big payday ahead of schedule, I’m all too aware of the dangers of chasing points, but not stubborn enough to turn my back on Dempsey’s potency for another Gameweek.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

To all those who had Dempsey today, I salute you. Well done.

To those of you who captained him, even better.

If you had Sess and Dempsey then enjoy, my friends, it rarely gets this good again in a season.

I have 9 from 6. Drenthe and Enrique kindly chose to celebrate their last performances for me this season with zero's. The wildcard axe moves swiftly but, sadly, not swift enough in my case.

I'm just happy my beloved QPR moved out of the drop zone with a much needed win today.

    Happy days.

Funny to think that if I didn't have such a poor gameweek last week I probably wouldn't have used my WC and wouldn't have transferred in Dempsey and Sess for Nani and VDV. Just gutted I didn't go the full hog and captain Dempsey.

Looking at my mini leagues i see hardly any of them had Dempsey , and my 21 points not looking too shabby when some are in single figures.

    YET

Reading this forum you would think everyone had Dempsey. Guess they the only ones posting today, but i take comfort in knowing the vast majority of people didnt have him

Yeah of course. If RVP scored a hatrick it would be great but nobody would be shouting their heads about it because many do. If your differential hits the spot then you would be happy. Thats what differentials are all about. Vast majority wouldnt own a differential otherwise he is not a classed a differential.

Dempsey or Senderos are really the only Fulham players I would look at getting in tbh.

I think Yakubu, when he's back from suspension, is better value. Alternatively, Helguson has better fixtures than anyone over the next 6 GW's and is cheap as chips.

          I don't think so.

Helguson delivers. As long as he does that why should he lose his place? DJ, Macheda and Bothroyd are in more danger of missing out than Helgs.

I think if we get Henrique he'll probably be asked to play off Heidar. We could do with someone pacy and accurate to finish off Helg's knockdowns and flick ons.

I know he has scored well but this is due to luck (winning pens). I understand this is part of the game but I would want a player because he is in form and pens would be a bonus. Walters' 'form' seems to be dependent on if he gets a pen or not, well to me that is.

OK about Robbie Keane's loan timings:

He's at Villa until the start of the new MLS season on 10 March.
      That gives him:

Not too bad especially if you rotate him out for the City match.

REPOST (fishing for a few more replies but thanks Ginkapo and Ajay)

Anyways now that I have my Dempsey(c) gloat out of the way, it’s time to get down to some serious talk. I had always planned to WC for GW23. Currently I have this and a free transfer:

    GW23
    Vorm(CHE)
    BAE(WIG) Simpson(bla) Enrique(wol)
    Bale(WIG) Dempsey(WBA) Nani(STO) Silva(eve) Allen(CHE)
    RVP(bol) Sturridge(swa)

    Subs: Foster(ful) Crouch(mun) Naylor(CHE) Hibbert(mci)

    1. Should I proceed with my original plan to WC? or leave it until next week?
    2. If I do which big risers do I need to get in? I think I need to get Sess and Walters in but I am too unsure which midfielder I could get rid of apart from Allen of course.

I agree with Sess (or Mclean) in, but im not sure about Walters myself. I had the option to get him in, but i passed, penalties aside, im not that convinced. (yes i know he's done well, but i do think his best scoring is probably behind him - now watch him score a hatrick next week!)

Personally im a fan of sticking to a plan unless theres a strong case for not doing so.

Clint Dempsey is a refreshing breed of Fantasy Footballers. No messin' about.

Just need to sort his bap problems.

I like him for just getting on with it, keeping a pretty low profile and doing the business. Way underrated IMO.

I know, I saw his supporters all stacked up for his first match for Everton. It is a perhaps refreshingly different mentality that they cheer on their footballers overseas... we'd never get used to that... maybe because we have virtually none 😀

Wait til tomorrow if you can. If you're WCing it should be pretty easy to WC him in by shifting a few other unwanted players around.

Already Wildcarded and Dempsey is going up in price tonight.. not sure if going without Man U cover is too dangerous

I'm doing that and getting Rooney in for this GW then swapping him out for Aguero in GW24.

I probably won't have United coverage other than a defender after that. Can always get Valencia in for Dempsey or someone else or get Rooney back later.

From GW28 on United coverage is essential and lots of it too. But until then I don't think it will hurt to go GW24-27 without any Man U attacking players.

He hasn't scored away from home since September though and Ben Arfa is looking in really good form so it makes more sense to play HBA, No?

+1. Newcastle have WBA away, Man City at Goodison is going to be a low scoring affair. I think playing Barfa ahead of Aguero is a good choice, given the circumstances.

Keep the hand off the trigger! Presumably Cahill will start getting game time soon, and Valencia is a decent shout. Dempsey not likely to get 3 goals again next week, so not worth a hit (though I'll be very happy if he backs it up!!).
