Mario Balotelli climbs off the bench to seal a last-minute victory for Man City over Spurs. Gareth Bale and David Silva get amongst the points again in a five-goal thriller as the league leaders complete the double over ‘Arry’ s boys. Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck continue to offer cheaper Fantasy alternatives in the United first XI, as Nani and Wayne Rooney fail to fire at the Emirates:

Sergio Aguero
The Argentine was handed the armband by many on the back of strong home form that had seen him fail to return attacking points in just one of his Etihad appearances this term. While Edin Dzeko provided an assist and Mario Balotelli slotted home the last-minute penalty, Aguero drew a surprise blank, leaving his Fantasy owners with just two points. With home games against (FUL, BLA, BOL) in the next five, though, he still looks enticing over the next few gameweeks as a strong captaincy option.

Vincent Kompany
City’s skipper will serve the final match of a four-game ban against Liverpool in the midweek Carling Cup semi-final and his return can’t come soon enough. Roberto Mancini’s side had conceded just four goals at home all season prior to yesterday but, with the Belgian’s replacement Stefan Savic particularly culpable, looked far from secure at the back as Spurs hit two past the league leaders. Kompany has dropped just 0.1 in price since being sidelined but will return in time for the following gameweek, away to Everton on January 31.

David Silva
The City playmaker provided the pass for Samir Nasri to fire home the opener early in the second half, bringing his total of assists to 13 for the season- 5 more than any other player. Silva had previously hit something of a dry spell, failing to return any assists between gameweeks 15-19 but has now provided four assists in his last three games and is a single point clear of Gareth Bale, on 130 points, at the top of the midfielder rankings. With that run of afore-mentioned fixtures just around the corner, Silva, and City, look primed to wreak further havoc.

Gareth Bale
His goal brought the Etihad clash back to 2-2 and continued Bale’s outstanding Fantasy campaign. He has now netted 8 times and bettered last season’s tally of seven and, with eight assists also to his name, is already comfortably ahead of his best-ever Fantasy campaign with sixteen games still to go. A home game with Wigan is up next and, while (liv, NEW, ars, MUN) follows on from the Latics clash, his performance yesterday highlighted just why he’s the one Tottenham player you can ill-afford to neglect, regardless of fixture.

Antonio Valencia
The winger grabbed a goal and assist at the Emirates and once again put Nani in the shade. Since returning to the first-team in gameweek 14, Valencia has outscored Nani by 65 to 56. He has topped Nani’s total in four of the last five gameweeks and with a home clash against Stoke next time round, it’s little wonder we’ve seen his FPL price rise overnight. Even so, currently available for 8.1, in comparison to Nani’s 10.4, Valencia looks a real bargain for United coverage right now, though with Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs to come in the next five gameweeks, United’s schedule is not the easiest.

Danny Welbeck
A third goal in his last four starts continues to highlight Welbeck’s recent promise. While Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez warmed the bench, Welbeck was again chosen to partner Wayne Rooney up top and vindicated his manager’s selection with the late winner. As the weeks go by, he’s looking more like a first-team regular and priced at 6.6, can’t be ignored. Rooney once more failed to get amongst the points- he has now scored or assisted in just six games since the end of gameweek 5, an incredible run of inconsistent form for the 12.0 priced forward.

Anders Lindegaard
David de Gea was benched once again for the trip to Arsenal, with Lindegaard earning his third start in a row- the longest run of games he’s managed this term. That’s five appearances in the United first XI in the last six gameweeks, though, and as the season progresses, he’s looking like he’s got the nod as United’s number one keeper. Granted, it’s impossible to second-guess Sir Alex Ferguson but a look at the stats perhaps back up this line of thinking- Lindegaard has shipped four goals in his eight appearances, an average of 0.5 per game, compared to De Gea’s 17 goals conceded in 14 games, or 1.2 per appearance. At 4.4, he is another promising cut-price option in the United first-team right now.

Jonny Evans
With Rio Ferdinand missing out due to a back problem and Phil Jones subbed off early with suspected ankle ligament damage, Sir Alex Ferguson’s defensive woes show no sign of abating. It’s good news for Evans’ owners, then, with the Irishman recording back-to-back appearances in the heart of defence after recovering from a calf injury. Coming in at a mere 4.5, he’s looking increasingly likely to establish himself as a first-team fixture, as those around of him continue to fall absent. United’s run of fixtures from gameweek 28 onwards look superb and a combination of Evans, Lindegaard and Valencia would currently set you back 17.0, only 5.0 more than Rooney.

Hmm, looking at Bale vs RVP for captaincy.
    - Bale at home - 3 goals, 6 assists, 66 points in 10 games.
Wigan away - 24 goals conceded in 11 games.
Bale vs Wigan last time - 10 points.
    Last 6 GW's - 16, 1, 9, 3, 5, 7 = 41 points.
    - RVP away - 9 goals, 5 assists, 82 points in 11 games
Bolton at home - 25 goals in 11 games
RVP vs Bolton last time - 13 points
    Last 6 - 11, 2, 9, 2, 6, 5 = 35 points.
Looks pretty tight, personally...RVP for (c)
    You?

To be fair more of us should have picked Lescott. Yes no one expected him to score, but with Kompany out it was pretty obvious he was going to take a bigger role in defence. Everyone just opted for Richards instead which wasn't a bad choice, just surprised a couple more people didn't punt.

Hey guys, anyone kind enough to give me some help here 🙂

    Vorm (Sorenson)
    Squirtle, Assou, Evans, (Senderos) (Simpson)
    Bale, Demps, Valencia, Sess, (Dyer)

Been scoring well, but the 3 up front have been fairly poor.
I have 2 free transfers and 0 in the bank.

    I'm considering:
    (A) Senderos > Kelly
    Squirtle > Kompany

    (B) -4 point hit
    Rooney > Zamora
    Squirtle > Kompany
    Sorenson > Hart.

      Rooney > Zamora / Welbeck
      Skrtel > Kompany

      and avoid the hit.

What are McClean owners planning to use him as

    A starter each week

A 5th mid that stays on the front line of the bench?

I have him ( I played him this week 🙂 ) but looking at my team I don't know wether to play him regulary or not and downgrade another mid to someone like Dyer/Moses and bench them.

    Thoughts?

I don't own him, but if I did then it'd probably be on a rotational plan, i.e. to play him for all Sunderland home games and to find someone (cheap) who rotates with him.

Thats what my plan was, but worried that Sunderland & McClean aren't just good at home, unlike someone like Walters who is great at home and poor away I think Sunderland could score well home & away?

To be fair ALOT of assist/goals with various players are 'very lucky' but either way he is performing well and getting the points, dont you agree?

I'd hardly call his assist very lucky, he probably meant to touch it on for himself, but it's not as if he tried to shoot, sliced it, and it fell to Sess, which is an assist I would call very lucky.

Right, bit of tinkering and I'm tempted to pull the WC trigger on this (for now):

    Krul/Lindegaard
    Kompany/Evans/Simpson/Caulker/Senderos
    Bale/Silva/Dempsey/Sessegnon/Moses
    RVP/Aguero/Fletcher

0.3 in the bank. Look good? Caulker/Fletcher not great but decent budget options.

    RMT

    Vorm (Krul)

Kompany, Evans, Senderos (A. Ferdinand, Simpson)

    Dempsey, Silva, Nani, Bale (Moses)

    Aguero, Fletcher, Morison

Krul or Vorm is a bit of a puzzler, I think Vorm at the moment. I've got one free transfer and 5 mil in the bank, pick someone to upgrade?

This is a plea for help. I have been on the back of two poor gw’s since having played my WC after 8 successsive green arrows. Whilst my team might look strong for this gw it is seriously flawed and requires major surgery. Current team for next gw:

    Lindegaard (Krul)
    Dawson Kelly Richards (Cahill, Caulker)
    McClean Mata Bale Dempsey Sess
    Aguero RVP (Torres)

Torres was a stupid gamble which didn’t pay off. Also big ? over game time prospects for Dawson and Cahill. Any advice for improvement on this lot would be very grateful received.

Too sideways a move? Feel the only time i will ever have an opportunity to change a goallie is now as i have 2 free's and no real other pressing concerns.

    Team would be:

    Lind
    Evans, Senderos, Kompany
    McClean, Valencia, Dempsey, Silva, Bale
    Aguero, VP

    Subs: Krul, Sturridge, Simpson, Enrique

I put Richards in for Kompany but may stick with him against Everton just to see how it goes. Richards did well agst Spurs!!

It's pretty stupid that penalty kicks are not worth the same points for every position. Goals are worth more for defenders because they get into fewer chances to score them, and mids get into fewer chances than strikers. When the penalty is given the conditions are the same regardless of which position the striker regularly plays in.

    I think.

Still, a defender needs to be considered something special to step up for a penalty. Either that or that team is crap.

On second thoughts, the latter. You're right Garg 😕

Wierd that isn't it, not many defender take penalties anymore, only Baines. I remember Irwin used to take them for United, he was fantasy gold back in the day.

What if (hypothetically), the only striker who is playing gets injured and all the other subs have been used on mids and defence. Then a midfielder/defender who isn't used to taking them would have to step up? In that situation it would make sense. Albeit it is a bit far-fetched.

Agree. I also personally think not everyone should get the same score for an assist, surely its harder for a defender to get one than a striker so it should be a different point allocation like the goals are.

I also think a keeper should get more for a clean sheet too, it is unlikely a keeper will get a goal or assist (unless your Howard or Krul) but a defender can, so to make a keeper more appealing he should get more for clean sheets.

True, but defenders don't get save points, so it sort of balances out.

Suppose but u would have to get a lot of saves (9?) to get the same as a defender would for assist. Maybe the points for saves should be adjusted then. I dont know! 😉

I would like to see many things. Id like to see Keepers and Defenders get 2 points per 45 min cleansheet. Id like to see them do something about the forgotten defensive midfielders that currently serve as nothing but deadweight. This would make the game more interesting and challenging and would increase the potential variety of teams by hopefully increasing the pool of players who offer decent points potential.

Id also like to see a return to just 1 wildcard per season (or remove it altogether) and Pens down to 3 points. And this is probably just me but Id like to see the captaincy option removed and replaced with an option for double points joker type option on a player of your choosing in say 12 gwks. That way you choose completely when to play it and which gameweeks 😀

Yup never thought of that before.

I also think that assists should have the same staggered scoring as goals.

Right after a good bit of advice i re-evaluated my keepers and dropped Lindy & Sorenson (Just watched back the stoke game and Sorenson made a right hauler!)

Team now is looking like this

    Krul, Mignolet
    Kompany, Evans, Simpson, Caulker, Shotton
    Silva, Dempsey, Bale, Valencia, Sess
Aguero, RVP, Keane (Ba after ACON)

Still have concerns regarding the front 8 being too strong, can someone talk me in / out of it!

Keepers rotate well, Shotton may be a bit of a risk but i do want some stoke coverage.

Your team looks very much like mine. I have Mignolet and Vorm and a slightly different defence but mid field and forwards identical!!

cheers Eddie. Are you not concerned about the front 8 being too strong then?

I'm guessing that Sess / Dempsey / Ba and even Valencia will be rotated depending on fixtures.

Walters has 19,000 transfers out since that penalty miss gave him 0 points. I know it was a good week for midfielders and a lot of people are kneejerking in, but how many transfers out would he have if he had just missed a game?

Theres also the fact that his current form isnt that good. Might be worth transferring him back for gameweeks 26 27 tho!!
