Bottom of the league entering December, the light appeared to be dying for Steve Kean and his beleaguered Blackburn side, but a series of determined displays in recent weeks have demonstrated that neither the players nor the manager have any intention of going gently into the night…

Attack appears to be the only form of defence available to a side with no clean sheets in the league all season, and with the Ewood Park faithful sometimes resembling a lynch mob it seems a kill-or-be-killed mentality on the pitch may be the only way to save the team from the drop and the manager from the gallows.

The loan signing of striker Anthony Modeste from Bordeaux is Steve Kean’s first significant foray into the transfer market this month, and seems indicative of the attacking mindset that is slowly propelling the club’s climb up the table. With Yakubu the only consistent goal scorer in a somewhat agricultural front line, Kean appeared relieved to have acquired an option with more cultivated qualities, commenting:

If you look at his attributes as a player, then he has something that we don’t have, he likes to play on the shoulder, he likes to run in behind. He can stretch the game and technically he is good.

THE STATISTICS

A product of the Nice youth system, Modeste made his full professional debut for the French Ligue 1 outfit back in 2007 and returned a modest 10 goals in 63 appearances over two seasons at the Stade Du Ray. Loaned out to Ligue 2 side Angers in the summer of 2009, Modeste relished regular starts and re-ignited his faltering prospects with an impressive haul of 21 goals in 37 appearances.

A 3.5m Euro move to Bordeaux the following season seemed to herald a rebirth for the young striker in the top-tier of French football, but a frustrating second season saw Modeste reduced to a peripheral role. As a result, Blackburn’s scouts endured a wasted trip earlier this month, as the forward was nothing more than an unused sub in Bordeaux’s clash with Valenciennes on the 14th January. Over a season and a half at the Stade Chaban-Delmas, though, Modeste has notched 15 goals in 63 appearances. He’s also represented the France U21 side on 15 occasions, scoring 6 times, but has yet to make the step up to full international level.

THE PROSPECTS

Modeste’s goal scoring record for Bordeaux is perhaps more impressive than it might initially appear, given his regular position on the substitutes’ bench. His arrival will give Kean more options in terms of formation- the Blackburn boss prefers a lone striker system and has started with a front two just twice this season. Aside from Yakubu, the forwards have failed miserably, with David Goodwillie and Jason Roberts netting 2 goals in twenty-five appearances between them.

Clearly, Bordeaux still feel the young striker has a promising future, having refused to countenance a clause in the loan contract that would allow Blackburn to seal a permanent deal at the end of the season. Watched closely by Arsenal following his fruitful spell at Angers, Modeste plainly has his admirers amongst European football’s elite, and with two disappointing spells at French Ligue 1 clubs already blotting his copybook, he will be anxious to prove himself at what could be a make-or-break loan spell in the Premier League.

With a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuation of 5.0, Modeste will primarily be competing with Danny Graham, Steve Morison and Leon Best for investment in a budget striker bracket that has so far failed to deliver the kind of output enjoyed by owners of Andy Carroll and Peter Odemwingie last season.

Blackburn’s fixtures are a mixed bag in the short term with trips to Arsenal and Manchester City sandwiched between some kinder home ties against Newcastle, QPR and Aston Villa. This spell should give Fantasy managers ample opportunity to assess Modeste’s potential in time for an enticing run of games for Blackburn between Gameweeks 27 and 31, and with goals the only likely path to salvation for Steve Kean’s side, Modeste should get every chance to make his mark in what could be a long and bloody battle against relegation.

We create lots of chances but just can't convert. He's been the better striker due to his accuracy (and confidence). Those two factors suggests he should have more goals this season.

The team however is not functioning properly and takes away the shine a bit. Without BA around I don't think there is much option other than going to the lower priced players such as Morison, Keane (maybe), Helguson, etc...

Personally though..I'm holding until BA get's back at least...just saying...

Huth or Riise maybe, but all three are linked by unfulfilled attacking potential...

I'm normally not a user of big defs but I have realized that since they get 6 points for a goal, and very often get BPs for scoring/assisting, plus they can get the clean sheet, attacking defender at big teams may be a winner...

I personally think your defense is too much..
You're relying on clean sheets a lot when there are cheaper options with good fixtures out there- Fulham for example.

You know Ba isn't backl for a bit right? GW 26 I would be looking at him..

I know Ba could be back for a range of dates - but if Senegal go out in the ACN group stage (already lost their first match) he could be back as early as GW24.

I know the defence is heavy, way heavier than I normally do, just an idea. Basically the cheap CS have gone unreliable of late (Newcastle, Swansea, Stoke, Fulham... only Sunderland really doing it and they start at 4.5). And CS won't be enough - I've chosen attacking defenders to try to grab 6pt goals and rake in the bonus points... think of them as playing in midfield!

      4 reasons;

      1. im a Man u supporter
      2. As an active FPL manager who is drooling over Dzeko getting 60 + mins a game with the most creative and explosive team and priced at 8.0M
      3. I disslike Baloteli's pompus attidude

Wish I can play 4 ManC players, already have Silva, Aguero, plan to switch Adebayor --> Dzeko but I dont want to miss Kompany!

        so Kompany or Dzeko?

          Silva
          Komps or Richards
          Dzeko

I think Dzeko vs Aguero (if given the same playing time) are equal. And Dzeko is 3.1M cheaper.

          Dzeko - 11G 5A in 1026 minutes
          Aguero - 14G 5A in 1480 minutes

don't think so. he received 2 yellows vs. liverpool and missed 1 match (carling cup quarters) because of that. since this one is his second sending-off (charged afterwards of course) he gets 4 match suspension (3 matches for violent conduct plus an extra match for previous sending-off).

good morning, tough days for a spurs fan. so close to making it a 3 team race, to have Defoe miss that winner, Balotelli's stamp, and Ledley King's penalty in the final seconds, on top of that, captain a player playing my club for the first time, Aguero, only to see city score 3 and he does nothing, (that part admittedly deserved), when every other legitimate captain option did something.

Most painful green arrow in my FPL history.

I'm wildcarding for "my wife's team". I was going to leave it until next week as i have 3 spurs players playing Wigan at home, but injuries and price rises have forced my hand. I'm definitelykeeping bale, and getting rid of VDV (no big hitting mids in my current draft) but what should I do with adebayor. I got him in quite late so wouldn;t lose too much when I shift him out:

    1) Keep
    2) Keep for Wigan, then downgrade. Problem with this is that i would downgrade to someone like zamora or welbeck, so freeing up a few mill, which would take a couple of weeks to spend. If I went straight to the cheaper option, I could upgrade shotton to huth.
    3) Get rid, and set up the team as I want it, for the next few games, rather than just one.

I'm leaning to 3, but i'm worried I might lose out on a bagful. Thoughts?

if you drop ade and he does something against wigan you will be kicking yourself. if you keep and he does nothing, not nearly as painful. Many have dropped him because of the ineligible game, many more will drop them out of their WCs because of spus fixtures after wigan. Id use him this week. High score potential with a growing differential.

Thanks ILA & Newman! Are you guys around?

Here are my reasons against WC-ing in gw23:

    1. I'll definitely be looking to renovate my defence with the WC & bring in City defenders. Not a good week for that, I suppose?
    2. Methinks I'm late on the Valencia ship and doubting his returns for the future. Nani fit would have been nice (sadly I was set up for this week) and since he isn't, do you think Sess with this form should cover my hit, yeah?
    3. I'm also hoping I can eat into potential bargains from the transfer window by waiting that extra week, gain a clearer picture of the Balotelli ban, Gayhill's nailed-on-ness and find out who wins between Liv/Mci.

    Thoughts?

Or if you wanted to take a gamble on game time, Welbeck (Mun).

      Obviously in for the Yak.

I'd probably take a gamble of Welbeck in the short-term, given your other strikers.

Hmm I like the idea of Wellbeck as a short term punt esp with Stoke coming up next. At the moment him and Valencia seem to be the only decent Utd cover.

Wellbeck's not too bad against the big teams either. Goals against Arsenal (both fixtures) and Tottenham. Assist against Liverpool. Might not be a bad time to get him with che LIV tot coming up :p

Anyone dumping Aguero for Dzeko if Balotelli is suspended?
Will Aguero be the penalty taker?

I need to free up some cash for Walters>Valencia. Currently planning
    a)Assou Ekotto >Shotton
    b)Aguero> Dzeko

    a or b?

I don't think it effects him. He(Walters) is useless in open play. He is all about peno's. Losing his 7(+ 3 boners?) last week still hurts.

I really don't think MU, Sunderland and Fulham will give penalty away easily.

Valencia has Liv/Chelsea when Walters have Sun/Ful. Could turn out just as difficult. But I see where you are coming from.

I made a rough draft. What do you think? Sacrificing Rooney and keep walters.
            a) Rooney > Keane/Helguson and Ferguson > Silva
            b) Rooney > Keane/Helguson and Ferguson > Valencia

Dzeko is a clown so no.

Aguero should be according to FFS but some might disagree and say it might be Milner.

      a. I myself have been wanting to get Shotton mainly because of his price and OOP but I'm not convinced with his playing time. Their next 3 home fixtures (SUN SWA NOR) are quite decent.

I think you run the risk of getting rid of Kun just when he'll go on a scoring streak. They have good fixtures through to the end of the season now. Give or take. And I agree with the sentiment that Wally is keeper too. Though Valencia would be an upgrade.

Morning. I've been reasonably lucky with my WC, although it did not pay of immediately(last week, with Yak red and selling Formica...)

I just don't get the "waiting until the latest time possible to WC"....for what? For new signings? That's a myth. For fixtures of certain teams turning bad/good? Sun/Stoke(ok, they lost and Walters missed a peno...)/Ful fixtures turned good last week already.

      I'm just saying. I don't get it.

Fair points. My reasoning for waiting: I think I can field a decent enough team this GW, though that could change with more information on injuries and what happens in the FA/Carling cup matches before this GW.

I agree. If anything, waiting till the last minute could mean buying some players for 0.1 or 0.2 more (if they got up) right?

I used it immediately since I had plenty of dead weight (likes of Monk, etc) and injuries in my team.

Ful(Demps) have excellent fixtures over the next 7(Excluding City away). WBA/STOKE/WOLVES/SWANS all at home and Qpr/Villa away. I can see Ful scoring in all those games and that most probably means Dempsey being involved.

I agree that Sess on paper don't have the best fixtures(he does seem to be in form though)

yes he did.. but logic says he's playin much deeper.. on no set pieces.. take nothing away from the fact that he will score some goals this season, but he was priced so high bearin in mind his tendency to play OOP.. with ruiz playin behind the striker, Zamora and Johnson playin well, dembele hoggin the ball again from next match i just dont see dempsey outscorin say an OOP walters on penos in the next 5 games

I'd keep him for Wigan. Not sure about Liverpool. Adam was sent off in the previous encounter and Spurs ran riot. After the 1-3 loss to Bolton I can think Kenny might take out the whip.

I agree. He won't score 20 pts per week but over the next 7 fixtures I'd rather have him than not. He has the potential to average a good score in next 7.

I'm happy having Walters/Sess/Dempsey at the moment. No Valencia or Citeh though.. 😥

                    Will change shortly though.

Current draft of the "my wife's team"'s wildcard. Assuming that Balotelli is confirmed out before the deadline.

    Krul (or Vorm), Lindergaard
Big Verm, Kompany, Richards, Shotton/ Kelly
    Bale, Dempsey, Valencia, Barfa/McClean
RVP, Dzecko, Adebayor (to be downgraded after wigan to zamora, crouch, wellbeck, or wait for Ba)

What do you reckon? Obviously no big hitters in midfield, but I don't see the point of getting in a big hitter for the sake of it, Silva would be the only one, but a nailed on Dzecko for 4 decent fixtures is too good to miss.

I'm keen on rotating Barfa and McClean. That doesn't leave me too many midfield spots to play with. Going Dzecko over Silva helps that situation! Don't like Sunderlands fixtures after this next one, so prefer to rotate McClean than go with Sess.

yes barfa started, but how long can he be depended on for starts? a streak of one isnt that comforting. plus you are waiting on more newcastle attack soon in Ba. verm is not worth his price IMO, though the next two fixtures could be a good source of attacking returns. the extra 2 mil silva costs more than dzeko is worth every pence.

I'm probably a bit blinded by the fact that he is awesome. And has scored two wonder goals and an assist in his last three. He is a gamble. But as a cheap rotation option I think its a gamble worth playing. I wouldn't advise anyone else on it though. It could easily go down in flames!

he does have talent, and i do love the cheap quality rotation concept. And he plays for your club, so surely you will have your eyes fixed on Pardew. go for barfa!!! just please find room for silva.

I'd actually be tempted to move Dzeko later on for Ba instead of Ade. I may be a bit biased but I have a feeling Ade will be well rested and raring to go the rest of the way.

      79 + 46 + 61 = 186

it just seems silly during these qualifying weeks that my squad isnt worthy of a spot. But hey, your league, your rules.

is 10k a constant figure no matter where you are ranked. What if you are ranked in a range of 10,000 managers who are within 3-4 points of each other, vs the same range of managers with a 20 point gap. its all relative. but again mate, i concede its your league. I just like to play with good competition and it sucks to see a competitive league posted every day that i suck too much to enter. even though i dont suck. 🙂

I understand where you are coming from. Like I said, you failed to beat the high average that week. Blame Mr Yakubu & captain Nani. Plenty went out that week, I was lucky enough to score 58 which was the qualifying score. Enter the FPL Open & Elite 63 for H2H competition against top ranks. Doubt the 20% League will last the distance anyway unlike the Mill Club.

some players just know where to be, when they need to be there. thats the most important "stat" in fantasy. Dempsey is one of those players. Chicharito is one of those players. Sometimes stats dont back these things up.

Jafa pointed out last week that he does not get the Dempsey love. based his theory on Optas and shots taken etc etc.

Dempsey is just one of those players. Although not on any set pieces and not OOP. He is very dangerous with headers and just knows how to score.

          Couple of things to consider....

If Citeh beat Pool in Carling cup I believe then Citeh's gw 26 will be postponed. That would leave you without 2 defenders. Just check if other 3 have ok ish fixtures.

I'm interested in Kun as (c) material for gw 26(if it takes place) and gw 27 when Man plays spurs and Ars have pool. What's your (c) plan those weeks? Silva?

Ba is on the horizon. Just saying.

GW 26 is on the horizon too.. just sayin.. by then i'll prob have sturridge in my team who'd be a viable captain option vs bolton at home.. or even silva.. just that with RVP bein a viable captain option every week i dont see the point in ownin aguero.. as i'd almost never captain him.. whereas a Richards + Adebayor should give good returns over say a senderos + Aguero.. or atleast comparable returns

ok i wont be a jerk and answer

top 100,000 means you are active and have a clue of what you are doing.
top 10,000 means you watch your games and do your research, but are missing something.
top 1,000 means you see and make wise transfers that others dont, i.e. you have the player in before the big haul and hype not kneejerking them in a week later, you make good armband decisions regularly, and you got a little luck on your side.

Not sure if he will keep his place, but if he does then he is a no brainer. That's why it is imperative that you have a second keeper that you would be happy playing every match, if Lindergaard misses out. Vorm and Krul both fit that bill for me.

    Hey what's potting guys...or should I say "plotting"...whatever...

Got team changes coming soon and wouldn't mind some suggestions but that's for later...what I didn't factor in but now may have to consider is Lindegaard. I currently have Vorm/Krul...I waited ages to get those two and am very anxious about breaking that combo up. So...what's the 4-1-1- on Lindegaard and would you move him into your team and for which player Vorm or Krul?

Rotation is obviously also a concern with the ManU keepers so is it even worth breaking up the V/K partnership...or should I be looking at it from another angle (meaning: Vorm or Krul could easily cover when Lindegaard is not playing)...

Look at either Krul or Vorm as keepers you could play every game (ala Hart), with a rubbish rotator (ala Ruddy). Then think of Lindergaard as that cheapie rotator. The difference is you would actually pick to play him. Make sense?

Sure...just thought that I will stick with my current set (V/K) and perhaps move to Lindergaard closer to the business end of the season where rotation may be less important than form/results...and if the price stays right and he's the man in there then will do a jump.

Why fix what isn't broken right?

Problem is, how do you pick the right one? They don't rotate well at all, so you will be pretty much guessing.

I've been pondering the same dilemna... Vorms fixtures (added the second half slump that most promoted teams experience) concern me...
But i might also need to clear space for Ba's return by finding a replacement for Krul...

Lindy looks like the man for the job, but Fergie is notoriously fickle with rotating keepers...
I've thought about Mignolet, but Sunderland dont have great fixtures coming up either... stuck in a bit of a limbo atm...

who to worry about more, Sturridge, Senderos, Sorensen or Santon?

Other than Sessegnon, my S-players stink like S.

Don't worry about santon. Absolute class. Was just playing a bit too far up the pitch on saturday. Easily sorted.
