Jamie O’Hara is set to remain sidelined for another fortnight for Wolves. Taye Taiwo arrives at QPR from Milan on a loan deal to bolster Mark Hughes’ back line, Peter Crouch escapes FA punishment, while Norwich snap up Leeds skipper Jonny Howson:

Alex McLeish received an injury boost this morning with news that three of his first-team squad could return for the weekend FA Cup clash against Arsenal. Stephen Ireland, Gabby Agbonlahor and Emile Heskey are on course to recover from their respective hamstring, illness and Achilles problems in time for the Gunners showdown. Charles N’Zogbia is still expected to remain sidelined due to a heel problem, while Chris Herd could return from an ankle injury in a couple of weeks, having been missing since gameweek 16.

Norwich completed the signing of Leeds midfielder Jonny Howson for an undisclosed amount yesterday. With their skipper out of contract at the end of the season, Leeds have “reluctantly” accepted the Canaries offer, with Howson arriving at Carrow Road on a three-and-a-half year deal. The Norwich midfield has been something of a conundrum for Fantasy managers this season, with rotation meaning seven players have managed 11 or more league starts, though Paul Lamber clearly has high hopes for Howson, saying:

I think he can add goals to our midfield which I think we need and he can do that. He’ll get better as a player the higher the level he goes up. If he does that and everything goes well, he’ll be a great player for us.

Reports this morning suggest Chelsea are close to completing the signing of Genk’s Kevin de Bruyne. The Belgian champions have confirmed they are in talks over the player’s possible transfer, though it is thought the midfielder may well be loaned back to the club for the rest of the season.

Jamie O’Hara is expected to be sidelined for another fortnight, according to Wolves boss Mick McCarthy. The midfielder’s recovery from a double hernia operation has been slower than the club anticipated, with O’Hara missing the last seven league games. He was expected to be ready by the end of January, but a return for the gameweek 25 home clash with West Brom now looks more likely.

QPR have snapped up Taye Taiwo on loan from Milan until the end of the season. The left-back’s arrival at Loftus Road certainly puts question marks against the likes of Armand Traore and with his renowned set-piece abilities, looks like one to watch ahead of his side’s favourable upcoming run of fixtures (avl, WOL, bla, FUL, EVE, bol) as Mark Hughes looks to build on last week’s win over Wigan.

While Mario Balotelli faces a four-match ban, the FA have been a little more lenient towards Peter Crouch. The Stoke forward has escaped any punishment for his apparent eye-gouge on Jonas Olsson is the Potters’ 2-1 home defeat by West Brom on Saturday. Crouch was set to face a three-game suspension but has been given the all-clear after match ref Anthony Taylor cleared him retrospectively of any misdemeanours.

Lets face it, most of us are sending our brains into meltdown trying to decide on Silva or Aguero or both for City's upcoming tasty run of fixtures. Many widely accepted opinions on the subject are at best debatable and I feel a need to rant about them some more:

"I am getting Silva as he is more consistent" 😎
More consistent in what sense? From a purely mathetmatical viewpoint, i.e. points per minutes played, Aguero (0.085) is actually more consistent than Silva (0.077). One might argue oh but Aguero has lots of 2 pointers and then compensates for this with a big haul whereas you will get a consistent 5-9 pts from Silva every week.

Why does this even matter? If you are going for either player you are doing so for the long term, at least the next 5-6 weeks or perhaps even longer. It only really matters if you are talking about having one of the pair for one week (in which case Silva is the much safer option) or we are discussing a potential captain which leads a lot of managers to deduce the following...

"I am getting Aguero as he is a better captaincy option" 😎
Really? Most people base this on the ability to return double figure hauls (DFHs). Aguero has 5 DFHs whereas Silva has only... 4 DFHs??? It doesn't exactly make this decision clear-cut does it?

We need to look deeper into this opinion. If you were to do so, you will actually find that Aguero has only been the better captaincy option (i.e. returned more points than Silva) in 7 of the 22 gameweeks thus far. Silva was actually the better captaincy option in 12/22 gameweeks (i.e. more often than Aguero) and in the remaining 3/22 it made no difference who you chose as they both got the same points.

Uh-oh! Does this mean Silva is the better captaincy option? Well, no. The big difference becomes apparent in the missed points when captaining one over the other. Let me explain, say for the purposes of this argument you had both players. Captaining Aguero in the 12 gameweeks where one should have captained Silva resulted in 98 MISSED POINTS (average 8.2 missed points). However captaining Silva in the 7 gameweeks where one should have captained Aguero resulted in 96 MISSED POINTS (average 13.7 missed points). For this reason, it does seem you stand to lose more points captaining Silva when you should have captained Aguero rather than vice versa.

Added to my “missed points” theory outlined above, I must admit that I personally do buy into the opinion that Aguero is a better captaincy option. Why? Well, choosing a captain is all about catching the right player at the right time. You cannot look at overall points etc when referring to a captain, it is a one off decision for that week and bares no relation to overall performance over any more than that one week. Crucially it is a PREDICTION

What is going on? Have I broke the page with my ridiculously long comments. The rest should read:

I cannot stress this enough. The fact that Aguero has got 4 of his 5 DFHs in home "bankers" (SWA, WIG, ful, NEW & STO) whereas Silva's DFHs have been less predicatable (bol WIG mun ARS) is the key element to this theory. As Aguero is more of a flat track bully, rather than a big game player, and his big returns are therefore more predictable, it seems he does indeed make a better "captaincy option" at least for this upcoming run of favourable fixtures. But what about this final reason...

"Forget Silva, I'm getting Aguero as he's a better differential" 😎
^^^ This is probably the worst justification I have heard thus far, not naming any poster's names (SMURF)! You do not abandon one player for another, because he is a better differential. You get the best combination of players who will score the most points, even if that means getting both Silva and Aguero. Forget differentials, if you truly believe Dzeko plus money spent elsewhere will score more than Aguero then get Dzeko, don't get Dzeko soley because less people own him.

There is a twisted logic to this statement that irks me a lot. Do the people with this opinion not realise that whatever differential quality you have just gleaned from getting rid of Silva for Aguero (who may I add has a substantial 35.7% ownership) is balanced out by that fact that you have just given 42% of your rivals Silva as a differential? Ladies and Gentlemen, you have just been introduced to the zany concept of a reverse-differential*. All of this just fortifies my opinion that ownership is not really all that important, player combinations which will result in the most points are.

      *Possibly already exists.

Plenty of people on her going for Sturridge or Mata for Chelsea coverage. Why do you need these players if their team is struggling to score more than 1 goal a game. It's perplexing

Coverage kinda works for defenders - most points come from clean sheets and if one defender on a team gets a CS then they all get a CS. It makes sense to aim for 'coverage' of a clean sheet bagging team.

It makes no sense whatsoever for mids or forwards. Only the player who scores or assists gets those points.

              Glad someone said this.

Neither, coverage is just being too scared to make a decision. Lets just face the fact that Liverpool are underperforming compared to their pricetags. And Mata and Sturridge just arent worth the money.

Still, considering the upcoming weeks, not having a single Man City player (aka coverage) would be foolish, with regards to the form of their players and their fixtures. But having for example Chelsea or United players just because they play in the big clubs makes no sense if the club nor the players are performing at the moment.

The way people have used coverage here though is a bit different. They seem to imply that having at least one player from a good team, regardless of the scoring abilities of that player, will somehow attract the points of that team. Like, having Mata because Chelsea will score and so Mata will therefore get some of those points. Which is clearly dim.

at this stage of the season surely you want the highest possible position.

After all if you get in top 100 I am pretty sure you will win your mini league!

No I agree, I'm just going to try and get the highest score possible and hopefully win my mini-league (working at the moment).
However if you had somehow ended up 70 points behind your leader then I could see the justification in taking some differential punts especially those who have a high ceiling for points in the past.

Just been looking at stats as been waivering thinking how I can fit Aguero in for Dzeko, but for the £3.1million difference think I have to stick with Dzeko.

The main problem with Dzeko has been not playing and rotation risk, with Balotelli out that is minimalised, so he should get the minutes.

Overall this season when he has played over 60mins (home or away) his returns have been

    8, 6, 21, 5, 7, 12, 5, 2, 2, 9, 5

It's only the 2 matches recently where he'd come from being out of the side for a few months where he returned 2's.

Aguero's homes over 60mins (as everyone knows he doesn't perform away so no points repeating) have been

    17, 6, 5, 11, 6, 1, 6, 1, 13, 8, 2

Given that Aguero's stats there don't include the fact he doesn't perform as well in the away games, it's not a massive loss I don't think to have Dzeko for the next 3 games at least whilst Balotelli is out, given the price difference.

I agree with this. I've been hesitating on switching Aguero to Dzeko so I can fit Sess in. Dzeko could easily outperform Aguero. The danger is City starting with Aguero up front and Dzeko on the bench.

Yeah that is the main risk.

For the sake of 3.1million to spend elsewhere ie that upgrades 2 average defenders to Richards/Kompany or brings in better midfielder, I think the risk isn't too high.

He seems back in favour now aswell.

With Yaya still being gone I think he'll probably start the 3 games as the midfielders such as Milner are playing deeper allowing Nasri to get in the team that way.

You should read the discussion further up the page. But not having any United players at the moment isn't necessarily a bad thing. Except for Valencia their top players aren't performing, more or less every single player in their team is prone to rotation, their upcoming fixtures aren't even good, so why bother? Concentrate on picking the players you think will perform the best.

Menly Mens team does just that, however, I don't see the value in Cole, and if I were you I'd spend the money otherwise, upgrading Brown/Caulker/Simpson/Senderos or Helguson/Keane.
Still, having Cole and the cheap striker is a very easy route to get Ba in a few weeks, which I imagine is in your plans. 😉

I personally really like the pick of Cole. I almost got Cech over Hart in my WC but was swiftly reminded that they don't keep clean sheets...well I would have been laughing right now!

I like it! Helguson over Keane imo. You have a nice balance I think. I would consider switching out Brown to a Stoke defender personally.

Oh also, I rose a million places from GW21>GW38 last season, so you should finish in the top 100k 🙂

Hristo, in this case, I'd go with the better fixs. SWA/FUL very even over the next few GWs, although GW 27 gives FUL an extra home game (WOL) over SWA away at WIG. That said, GW 27 is a long way off, I'd perhaps go for the slightly more reliable starter in Caulker, but not much in it.

Comparing these players to their peers in terms of value

Aguero 11.4 ppm (points per million)
    Ba 17.5 ppm

    Silva 12.5ppm
    Sessegnon 15.9ppm

Aguero is represent 65% of the value of Ba
Silva represents 79% of the value of Sessegnon

You are comparing them to ONE player each, and Ba has scored 20 more points than Sessegnon.

          Aguero 11.4ppm
          Heskey 4.9ppm

          Silva 12.5ppm
          Sessegnon 15.9ppm

Aguero is represent 233% of the value of Heskey
Silva represents 79% of the value of Sessegnon

Therefore Aguero is a better pick.

            Alright I will bite.

Top three strikers in terms of value; (ignoring the fact that one spot is taken up by RVP anyway)

            Ba-17.5 ppm
            Graham- 16.5 ppm
            Morison- 16.1 ppm

So Aguero represents 71% of the value of Morison, the third most valuable striker.

            And the top five midfielders in terms of Value;

            Sessegnon - 15.9 ppm
            Dyer 15.8 ppm
            Sinclair 14.4 ppm
            Pilkington 14.3 ppm
            Walters 14.2 ppm

So Silva represents 88% of the value of Walters, the 5th most valuable midfielder.

If anything that just makes it look better.

Yes, except that you need Captain possibilities in your team. And RVP is the best captain around.

Personally I cant pick a decent captain anyway, so shall just captain RVP till the end of the season week in week out. So I am foregoing Aguero on the grounds that he others me nothing compared with the cheaper strikers.

Erm, no it doesn't. It isn't just about the value. It's about points. No point in saving up all the cash for other players who can't deliver. If you know someone's going to give you the points, just get him guy. Simple 😉

A lot of number crunching is going on over the Aguero Silva debate but I think you need to look at it in terms of who has the greater potential to score a hat-trick over the coming game weeks me thinks Aguero. I will be putting both in my team next game week though

Horses for courses, I have RVP to score me hatricks, every one else is just to churn out points week in week out. If a hatrick is outweighted by lots of 2 points is it worth it? Only if you captained the hatrick and not the 2 pointers.

          I'm with you Ginkapo.

Alternatives to Richards and Kompany? There aren't any.

Similar midfielders with Silva's output? I'm struggling.

Alternatives to Aguero are two a penny and for a much kinder price. Yes, Aguero will outscore a Yakubu in the long term, but if you catch him hot, Yak and Silva and City defenders will outscore Aguero, a cheap midfielder and defender.

My post was really scrutinising the ideas of consistency, captaincy and differentials.

Value is a whole other kettle of variable fish Ginkapo. For example say player A who costs 8m gets 100pts for the season (i.e. 12.5ppm as you put it) whereas player B who costs 10m gets 120pts (12ppm).

Who would you rather have for the whole season? The player with 12.5ppm of course? WRONG! You always want the player with the more points as v

I know this is not taking into account where that other 2m could be spent nor the fact that you can have both the bargain players plus the expensive ones. For me it's too complicated to even begin analysing 'Value' but good luck.

I agree my argument completely ignores captaincy. Pls dont do yourself the injustice of saying you dealt with the idea of differentials, I think you clearly proved there is no such thing.

Obviously it is important to use all your money as wasted money doesnt earn interest. And you also dont want to much value lingering on your bench as that also is pointless.

I have just seen a lot of posts like yours recently, which whilst being perfectly valid and extremly useful dont deal with Value at all. I am just trying to open peoples eyes a little bit. Awareness is all I want.

Nice. I'm like a pendulum. If it wasn't for Lindegaard, I'd be seriously tempted to treble at the back with Hart.

As it stands, I'm going for Richards, Kompany (3 goals, 8 assists between them) and Silva. Then really delve into that goldmine of cheap strikers. I'm sure that's been the secret to Mark's success. He's had no Aguero/Rooney points and yet is on the cusp of the top 1K. Balance of the force.

wildcarded a few weeks ago and regretting it now. Thought kilgallon was good pick at 4.0 but he got injured, as did gabbidon (bad pick). also think my keepers leave me a bit exposed.

    Team currently:

    Mignolet Foster
    simpson gabbidon kelly kilgallon shotton
    mata silva bale dempsey moses
    rvp aguero sturridge

Want to make it a little less top heavy, thinking of going Mata for sessegnon then next week kilgallon for Kompany.

Funkyav - I'm only on sporadically do I apologise for not getting back to you. I use the term
Differential as word to describe a highly sought after player with great fixtures which my rival does not have. For example if I have aguero and he does not then he is my differential.

I agree with what you are saying about rank however I am
On the outskirts of 100k and my main rival is in the top 1k about 150 points ahead. I'm happy going for players he doesn't have if I think they will score highly and this being the only reason I chose them. spearing is a differential but I wouldn't go for him. If at the end of the season I am 34999 and he is 35000, I will be happy.
