As entry opens for the Members-only Paddy Power Cup VI, we’ve almost reached the final stage of it’s predecessor. Gameweek 22 saw four fantasy managers face off in the Semi-Finals of the Paddy Power Cup V. In case you missed the summary in this week’s ScoutCast, here is how the two ties panned out…

sleepingmaster 48 – 41 ChickenDevil

sleepingmaster advances to the Grand Final after a seven-point win over ChickenDevil. A late fight-back courtesy of Antonio Valencia’s 13-point haul wasn’t enough to close the gap after Stephane Sessegnon and, to a lesser degree, Ciaran Clark’s performances the day before.

Sitting 59,659th in the world, sleepingmaster advances as the underdog, but is safe in the knowledge that he’s already pocketed prizes worth over £100. ChickenDevil will have to settle for a Gameweek 23 3rd-place play-off to bag a prize.

Raasclart 26 – 37 Funkyav

Eleven points was the margin of victory for Funkyav over Raasclart, who has John Ruddy’s unlikely clean sheet against Chelsea to thank. With Funkyav backing a heavy Chelsea win, seeing as his team boasted the likes of Juan Mata and captain Daniel Sturridge, fortune was certainly on his side.

Congratulations to sleepingmaster and Funkyav for reaching the Grand Final! A preview article will follow…

    Anyone thinking of doubling up on ManC def? I was kinda set on it but am thinking I may prefer Silva, Kompany & Aguero. Aguero's looking like a player to have for the next few gws so Richards & Hart don't look as appealing. Doubling Def - Twice the pain or twice the gain?

          Silva's main input is assists rather than goals and Aguero and Dzeko should cash in on Silva's assists as well as their own input.

    Long rant alert! You know, I've been thinking about the endless refereeing controversies (comfortably one a week) and I've realized, aside from the media loving to jump on this because it's their bread and butter, the "inconsistency" problem might not be the refs.

    The problem might be the Laws of the Game. The problem might be that the Laws of the Game are inherently so vague and subjective that two reasonable referees would make different decisions in similar situations. That's not their fault, that's just bad laws.

    Let's look at the Laws of the Game for "Sending-off offences" (Law 12). I've marked subjective or vague parts with an asterisk (*).

    ======================================================================
    A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the following seven offences.
    - serious foul play*
    - violent conduct*
    - spitting at an opponent or any other person
    - denying the opposing team a goal* or an obvious goalscoring opportunity* by deliberately* handling the ball
    - denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity* to an opponent moving towards the player's goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or penalty kick
    - using offensive*, insulting* or abusive* language* or gestures*
    - receiving a second caution in the same match.
    ======================================================================

    Do you see definitions for any of these? No. Does it matter? Yes. These are the bread and butter of weekly controversy. Of these five subjective offences, I'm sure you can recall a contentious incident for each and every one of them in the last month alone.

    What about the offside law (Law 11), which is meant to be THE clear-cut law in the game? Here's the "easy part":

    ======================================================================
    Offside position
    It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.
    A player is in an offside position if:
    - he is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent

    A player is not in an offside position if:
    - he is in his own half of the field of play
    - he is level with the second-last opponent
    - he is level with the last two opponents"
    =======================================================================

    All seems pretty clear-cut on the first reading, but which part of the player are you counting? The part of him closest to the goal? The part of him furthest from the goal? His head? This might seem trivial, but all three of these I have seen disputed in offside analysis. It's exactly these kind of specifics you need to nail down in a law, otherwise it may as well be a guideline. Now the "hard part":

    =======================================================================
    Offence
    A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion* of the referee, involved in active play by:
    - interfering with play*
    - interfering with an opponent*
    - gaining an advantage by being that position*"
    =======================================================================

    All three are vague, and it gets vaguer as you go down the list. A perfect example of this breaking down is watching the second goal Sorenson conceded to West Brom last week. There was an offside player on the left periphery of his vision that potentially could have distracted him, but he was "in the opinion" of the referee not interfering with play and the goal stood. Either could be right, but clarity is all we want.

    The worst thing about the enforcement of the offside rule, though, is that it is physically impossible to make the correct decision with certainty. Why? Because the way it's formulated, you literally have to look at two places simultaneously: the passer of the ball as he strikes the ball, and the offside recipient. That's impossible. What people actually do is project backwards in time: they watch the passer strike the ball, then they see where the recipient is and think "could he have been onside when the ball was struck?". It then just becomes elaborate guesswork. AKA: Making It Up.

    Generally speaking, when referees are criticized after matches, it's not because they blatantly contradicted any of the Laws of the Game. It's that they worked inside the broad scope of the laws to produce an outcome that goes against the complainant's common sense. Typically, a referee the week before produced the opposite outcome in a similar situation, again consistent with the laws. ("Common sense", of course, varies surprisingly between opposition fans.) It's the laws at fault then, not referees at large. What we need are an utterly specific set of laws so that at least for a given incident everyone knows whether it's legal or illegal. You can debate about the merits of the laws then, but not about the officiating.

    Finally, I know that some people see the Laws of the Game as sacred, unchanging statutes that should never be modified. I think that's putting the cart before the horse a bit - the purpose of the Laws is to make football more enjoyable. It's not football's purpose to perpetuate the Laws of the Game. And besides, they've been changed umpteen times - the change of the offside law from last 3 men to last 2 men back in the 1920s, the addition of professional foul, the level with last man law, the addition of substitutes. So the Laws are process of evolution, not a final eternal product.

    End rant...

        Platini was trying out additional officials this year I think. It might get more decisions right but I think it's just taking the human error problem and dividing by two - ideally I wish we'd just bite the bullet and think "the reason why refs get more stick right now is because we've had video replays for what 30 years, and mistakes are more and more obvious... why don't we use video replays as an additional aid for officials?" People say it will ruin the game and slow it down, but it already says in the laws that the game does not have to be stopped when an infringement occurs. Just as refs do when they play advantage right now, they can punish players at the next break of play after the decision comes in from the fourth man watching the replay.

          Referee's mistakes are more obvious now due to the increased no of cameras. I don't believe the quality of refeering has deterioted.

          Not keen on the flow of a game being continuously stopped - it could end up like NFL. Cricket sans India has it pretty much right at the moment as far as technology is concerned.

          Rugby - both codes - seems to be using a little tech and could be the way to go.

            Yeah that's what I mean, the 'problem' has been increased visibility not poorer decisions. You're right about keeping tech to a minimum - start with as little as will do the job. Cricket, rugby, they've got it right.

      nice post. you missed handball tho which is my current bugbear.

      what annoys me about this whole thing is when there's people arguing about decisions when seeing it in slow-mo after the match , and the refs still getting abuse for making wrong call.

        Here's what our esteemed Laws have to say about handball:

        =====================================================
        A direct FK is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following three offences:
        - ......
        - ......
        - handles the ball deliberately*
        =====================================================

        =====================================================
        Disciplinary sanctions
        There are circumstances when a caution for unsporting behaviour is required when a player deliberately handles the ball, e.g. when a player:
        - deliberately* and blatantly* handles the ball to prevent an opponent gaining possession
        - attempts to score a goal by deliberately* handling the ball

        A player is sent off, however, if he prevents* a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity* by deliberately handling the ball.

      Doesnt matter re the offside analysis about what part of the player cos linesmen are not making decisions based on that in real time. Thsi is just Bull crap debate started by idiots with machines in warm viewing rooms - oh freeze it here, draw a line, you can clearly see that dempseys left toe os at least level with Kings right testicle - a load of b0ll0ck$
      Linesmen are judging
      - in a split second
      - whether a player 'looks' level or not
      - from the posioton where he (the linesman) is standing
      - while often running at speed down the touchline
      - with 60,000+ fans screaming
      - etc etc
      the best they can hope for is to get approximately right....

          lols that made me laugh.

          You gotta understand I am on the side of the officials here. I'm pointing out that they're placed in an impossible situation in very difficult circumstances. I just wish they had more help from the laws, and not just that, but from the very video replay technology that allows people in "warm viewing rooms" to waggle their fingers at their decisions. Then they wouldn't get the abuse.

            broadly speaking you're totally right here. the one rule tho, that can never be ref'd properly is the offside rule. it's too difficult to get right, based on laws of physics in that the linesman cannot always look at passer and receiver at exact same time.

            so, people need to accept that there'll be mistakes.

              I'd hold my breath but I'm afraid I might turn blue 😀

              Just seems like one of those absurdities that they can whip out a replay which almost always settles it (it being a goal!) in less than 10 seconds, but the poor guy running the lines has to make his decision on that very instant.

              They should at least try using the replays, I can't believe they haven't even tried such a simple thing, the very thing that's breathing down their necks. If there's any doubt, side with the defending team, same as the way we decide penalties right now.

                yeah again totally agree. dont know if you watched the tennis this morning but they have lots of calls about ball being in or out and doesnt ruin game at all. totally diff game but still. i think some sort of video replay thing will come in at some point.

                  Can't believe I missed that awesome match but exactly, Hawk-Eye is completely accepted there and just adds to the fun really. Same in cricket, it's been so widely accepted that India's choice not to use the Decision Review System stood out as strange. They actually ended up on the wrong side of several decisions that series, that DRS probably would have got right.

                  Blatter almost caved in after this World Cup when England scored the goal that wasn't given but was over the line on replays - after a lifetime of opposition he said something like "it would be ridiculous not to consider replays". Unfortunately I don't see much progress right now... but I agree, at some point, the absurdity will be resolved. Maybe not under him, but under someone. I keep the faith.

    lingaard krul rotate well

    kompany plays every week, then rotate caulker and senderos with simpson and taiwo
    dempsey bale silva valencia mclean
    rvp ba aguero

    0.3 in the bank
    i would be removing vorm at 4.8, bae at 5.5, and enrique at 5.5 by doing this wc so thoughts?

          Caulker not vulnerable to rotation at all. Taiwo should be s starter too...I think you're good to go.
          BAE and Enrique you may want back from about GW31 (if memory serves me)...so too far away to worry about.

      Theo was his usual running very fast without thinking much self, not much changed there. Goal went in off his face after he did another fast 1 on 1 with the Villa fullback, I think it was Warnock, so not exactly the best in the league.

      Ox was pretty good again but nothing stunning.

      If there's no one else to choose from I'd probably go with Ox against Bolton simply because of his potential and offering more unpredictability than Walcott. Would avoid Arteta, not so much goal threat.

      Theo had one of his best games in a while, not that it was good or anything, just good by his standards. Wasted plenty of clear goal scoring opportunities but at least he made some good runs and got some crosses in.

      Ox had a good game, explosive pace and not too shy of taking a shot. None on target I don't think but one to watch.

      You know what you get with Arteta, calm and non-exciting fpl-wise!

              It's probably for the best! Ox is definitely looking the most dangerous out of all the Arsenal mids, beats the full-back consistently and gets a few shots every game - if you really want to be sold... I'm a terrible salesman 🙁

              Giggs on pens for sure? Spanner in the works if true. Seems like a generally an assists man in open play nowadays, hard to remember the last time he scored a free kick. That said a record of 1 goal 7 assists is pretty incredible this season given his gametime and age. Maybe he is too good to ignore.

                he's hardly taken any as Rooney, Young and Nani have been ahead in the queue, he may compete with Valencia for corners, but my guess is Giggs takes corners on the right, Valencia on the left.

                Good to know the orders, so basically Giggs will be on pens this match, and probably free kicks and right corners. Yep, proper dilemma! Why not Giggs eh. Might be the best and only time in the season you get to play him.

                  I think that's our order, but we've never had a pen this season where Rooney hasn't been on the pitch. Giggs was 2nd choice last year, but we know Young is a good pen taker, and when fit will play more so I think he's 2nd.

                  Rooney
                  Young
                  Giggs
                  Nani
                  Carrick
                  Berbatov

                  Is out first 5 I think

                    Just off the top of my head in terms of who can take pens and how much they play, think that is fairly accurate though.

    in a bit of a quandry. got RVP Sturridge & Torres as my front 3, i've already used my free trannie and am not sure on wether to change Torres for someone like Defoe or Dzeko for a 4 point hit. Any thoughts folks. I like Defoe but then would have to take him back out so pretty pointless. I want Dzeko but not particularly away to Everton. Stick or twist ?

      no, Aguero is a home boy, don't see him doing anything at Everton. Wait until Tues to see the line-ups, Fergie is known to exaggerate injury lengths and Rooney is known to be a fast healer. See if he's playing then maybe go for a Bent, Keane or Dzeko punt.

      Subbing in Cabaye - away to Blackburn and you'd fancy him for an assist right? Ok, gun back in the holster although the hands are hovering like Dirty Harry!

        Mmmm.... Cabaye's away form is pretty lousy (if I recall correctly, haven't looked for a while). If he gets 2pts, to break even you need a goal from your striker (it'll actually likely be a gain after bonus points). Maybe...

          They are exactly my thoughts also, even an assist would probably get me to break even! Ah the silly quandarys of the FF Manager ... and silly Aguero's inability to do ANYTHING away from home-base.

            Personally obviously you have to respect the stats, but I see Aguero's away form as an absurdity waiting to be corrected... such a class player, I can't imagine him going on for the rest of his City career scoring way more goals at home than away. Just counted up his goals and it's 10 at home, 4 away. Given that many of the big guns were played away in the first half of the season, it might not be so bad. I would give him a go.

          In theory, but Santon was signed at a pretty decent price from Inter and has started a good number of matches in a row, including the cup match yesterday after the Fulham defeat in what was a full-strength side (from fit players). The Brighton goal didn't come from his flank either, it came from Simpson's flank. He also got forward a lot on the left to cross. Assist points ahoy.

      yes get them both in, Silva is a must have, and Aguero is great at home against lower teams (which is why you want City coverage for the next few weeks) can only get better away, and with Mario suspended he's on pens.
