As entry opens for the Members-only Paddy Power Cup VI, we’ve almost reached the final stage of it’s predecessor. Gameweek 22 saw four fantasy managers face off in the Semi-Finals of the Paddy Power Cup V. In case you missed the summary in this week’s ScoutCast, here is how the two ties panned out…

sleepingmaster 48 – 41 ChickenDevil

sleepingmaster advances to the Grand Final after a seven-point win over ChickenDevil. A late fight-back courtesy of Antonio Valencia’s 13-point haul wasn’t enough to close the gap after Stephane Sessegnon and, to a lesser degree, Ciaran Clark’s performances the day before.

Sitting 59,659th in the world, sleepingmaster advances as the underdog, but is safe in the knowledge that he’s already pocketed prizes worth over £100. ChickenDevil will have to settle for a Gameweek 23 3rd-place play-off to bag a prize.

Raasclart 26 – 37 Funkyav

Eleven points was the margin of victory for Funkyav over Raasclart, who has John Ruddy’s unlikely clean sheet against Chelsea to thank. With Funkyav backing a heavy Chelsea win, seeing as his team boasted the likes of Juan Mata and captain Daniel Sturridge, fortune was certainly on his side.

Congratulations to sleepingmaster and Funkyav for reaching the Grand Final! A preview article will follow…

      I toyed with the idea of having Terry in my wildcard. Came to the conclusion in the end that he just isnt worth the money. Taiwo is fine if your happy to gamble a little bit. Clark i personally dont like as there a much better cheaper options but he does seem to pop up a bit on this site for some reason.
      Midfield is strong.
      No RVP is the obvious flaw in the forward line. Although I do like the Bellamy punt. He will be a great differential and if he can nail down a permanent starting position (altho unlikely) I will be strongly considering him for me team.

      Kneejerk lessons... Zamora, Agbonlahor and Bent only seem worth playing at home, Dzeko has uncanny skill at scoring away, ditto for Fletcher and Sturridge, Aguero has scored much more at home but still has scored at least as many away goals as half the players on the list.

        And yes RVP, Rooney, Ba and Yak don't seem bothered about where they play, they still score. I'd say Ade too but his recent form has been so woeful I feel irresponsible saying anything positive about him.

    Morning lads

    If I go for Richards over Kompany in "my wife's team" WC, it will allow me to have Santon rather than Shotton. Would prefer Kompany, but what is the latest thinking on shotton? So simply put, Kompany + Shotton + 0m, or Richards + Santon + 0.2m

    I'm liking the look of the team. Its very generic (apart from Big Verm and Dzecko). In fact, i've seen several teams which are almost identicle over the last couple of pages. I don't mind having the same team as everyone on here at all, as i'm only looking at winning my mini league

    Lindergaard, Krul
    Kompany, Big Verm, Kelly, Shotton, Caulker
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Valencia, McClean
    RVP, Dzecko, Ba

    Dzecko will become aguero in time for the two home games.

    Thoughts?

          Yeah. Cheers. I think that it is safe to say that they won't rise!

          Another option that I have is to switch McClean with a 4.4m mid, as my 5th midfielder would rarely play. That would allow me to have Kompany and Santon. Not much choice in that bracket though, and McClean could be good.

          I had Buzz but QPR have a new midfielder from Nancy and Taarbat will be back soon so not sure if he will keep his place. McLean seems best shout at that price range. This is my current wildcard team:

          Mignolet Lindegaard
          Richards Kompany Kelly Taiwo Santon
          Bale McLean Valencia Sessegnon Dempsey
          Van Persie Aguero Ba

    Anyone watch the tennis today?

    Unbelievable. Nearly six hours. Six HOURS of almost constant mental focus, full body exertion and 100% effort.

    Compare that to a 90 minute football match when any one player spends a good portion not really doing much/not involved - ie ball's in the other half, or just gentle build up, passing it about now and again

    When you think Djokovic played two five setters (nearly eleven hours) in three days, makes you question why players moan at the, ahem, "hardship" of maybe three games in ten days....

      Yep spot on mate. Personally I was going for Nadal but the fact that Djokovic played 2 epic matches, as you say, almost 11 hours of constant focus make him a deserved winner thats for sure. 3 games of football in 7 days seems nothing in comparison. I was in front of the TV (and computer) for over 6 hours last night. I just couldnt look away. Such a great game. The best final (or match for that matter) that I can remember seeing.

    Anyone thought about Silva (c) this week? Not many people really see him as captain material these days. I guess this is due to him being an accumulator (5/6 points every week) as opposed to an explosive player (2.2,13,2,20).
    Almost guaranteed at least an assist you would think if not more.

        Yeh I agree just putting a bit of different thinking on it. Barely ever get a 2 pointer from Silva (altho the same could be said for RVP). Whereas the likes of Rooney, Nani, Bale, VDV, Aguero could easily stick you with that dreaded 4 points from your (c).

          Agreed. I can't be bothered doing the historic analysis, but I've had so many captain fails that I reckon if I'd just captained Silva every week since the start I dont think I'd be much worse off. In fact, I think I'd probably even have more.

          Weirdly though, I don't think I have even captained him once this season though. Godammit he's kept my team afloat so many weeks this season though

          I dont see why not. He hasnt played any more minutes than he would have had he stayed in England, plus the travelling isnt that much of a big deal. No real time difference, plus a flight back from Africa isn't really that much longer/more arduos than what would have been two round bus trips to Fulham and Brighton

            Precisely! This is what I've been thinking.

            Played only around 220 minutes in 15 days. Would have played close to 4-5 games had he been in England.

              My only reason is he wouldn't have trained enough with the team before the game, but surely 1 day of training is more than enough for such a crucial player.

    Might be trying to over optimize this a bit but I'm WC trading and looking to get double rises out of as many players as possible.

    Welbeck is getting his first rise tonight and is getting fast transfers in (probably due to the Rooney flag). I am seriously thinking of playing him on Tuesday so long he is named on the teamsheet. I would bring him in for Morison.

    But I already have 3 United players: Lindegaard (bought 4.4 now 4.5) Evans (bought 4.4 now 4.5) and Valencia (bought 7.8 now 8.1). So to get Welbeck I'd need to sell one of them. Which if any?

        will rotate week by week. for example benching walters vs united this week. and it means i have a good sub coming off the bench as opposed to someone who will most likely get me 1 or 2 points. debating losing enrique but undecided now. who to replace him with?

        might hold tight like u say. just unsure as sorensen might no longer be first choice and if i make the change this week i can play linde vs stoke as opposed to vorm vs chelsea

    Considering his age and the state of his knees, watching just how good Bellamy has been for Liverpool the last couple of months just make me think how much he has really under achieved in his career

    Probably multiple problems to blame, like his attitude, his agent, bad transfer decisions etc etc, but can't help but think that if he had really screwed the nut in his prime and found a team/manager that got the best out of him that he could have been amazing

    Having said that though, and even being a Liverpool fan, the guy is still an utter bam

    Thoughts on wildcards and advice being given

    Seems to be plenty of positive reinforcment , and a safety in numbers approach that might not be too healthy , unless your already in the top 5000

    We have all seen the teams , they nearly all the same , and anyone who dares to pick someone different like Darren Bent or one of the other unfashionable platyers , is soon put right , by all the "advisors"
    Dempsey is essential , they cry .
    Anybody being different is soon hammered into conformism by the majority

    One things for sure though . You wont win by copying everyone else. Sooner or later your going to need differentials.

    Last season for me it was Hangeland that propelled me to top 500 in world finish , if i had listened to people on here i wouldnt of had him when he scored his 22 points or whatever it was. So dont be too quick to be beaten into line.

    I made that mistake myself lastweek , buying Walters simply because everyone else was , i regret it already .

      Differentials are, by definition, going to be riskier. What you get on here is advice as to who are the statistically/theorectically best picks

      For example, Walters. He scores well at home usually, and bar that penalty miss he would have delivered, but there are no guarentees

      It depends what your goals are. Yes, if you are behind in your mini league and your rivals have similar teams then yes you will have to take punts, but my strategy is predominantly to pick the players that "should" score the most points

        exactly. this game is all luck, but we pick players that have the best chance of scoring to minimise the chance involved. Its why pretty much always highest score in the gw is some non - player who got lucky.

      Good post & totally agree. However sometimes it can work the other way. I left out Dempsey & Sess on my WC for McClean & Mata. What a big mistake that turned out to be. However Dempsey scored his hatrick in a unbelievable 30mins while Mata was unlucky with 6 shots for no result, could have been very different on another day & my Differential might have worked wonders.

      Totally disagree. What you get on here is a consensus about who the best picks are. To win at this game you need to consistently pick the best players for points throughout the season. The moment you pick a player because he has low ownership rather than point-scoring ability, you have lost.

      The trick is to find a better combination of top points scorers than everyone else. They might all be obvious picks individually, but the combination is what can set your team apart.

      For the record I finished 32nd last year and I didn't need any differentials. The key was getting on bandwagons at the right time e.g. Kuyt at the end of last season.

        Great finish Last Yr. Amazing the difference the yr before in overall rank from what looks like only a few less points.

        I think you somewhat validate TL's point though in making yours, for instance, you getting on Kuyt at the right time was crucial, & at that time most on here (rightly so) were probably pointing people in the another direction.

        Think both points are valid, you do need the best point scorers, and majority of your team should be made up of these players, it's the question of when to switch to another likely points scorer that has not delivered just yet that is key.

      I think it depends what your target for the season is. If you want to win the whole thing, I guess it is imperative to have the skill + luck to get a few players that the majority don't have just before they hit massive form. After which everyone will get them in. If you just want to win your mini league, and most of your rivals aren't on here, then your best to stick with the tried and trusted old favourites I reckon.

        They hardly played together in Africa at all. Cisse was on the bench mostly. For a WC this week, then you should definitely stick with what you know and go with Ba. But if you are looking at the juicy home fixtures in GW26,27 (WOL, SUN) then I would keep an open mind. If Cisse gets the pace of the premier league quickly, he COULD be a better option than Ba, because he will almost certainly be playing further up the pitch.

      Got to be Ba. Its a rare player that comes straight into the English game on full flow.

      Ba himself has taken a fair few seasons before he's hit this great form but now he is proven and is delivering. Considering he's only 0.3 more than Cisse I don't see any value in taking the punt

    In my wife's WC team. I can afford what I want to do, if I downgrade Big Verm for Huth (I can easily bench Huth against Man Utd). But that would leave me a spare mill. Any ideas what I could do with it? I don't really like having that much left over, unless I have a plan of how to spend it over the next few games.

    Lindergaard, Krul
    Kompany, Huth, Santon, Kelly, Caulker
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Valencia, McClean
    RVP, Dzecko, Ba

    I could do senderos for kelly, but I think that they are both as much of a rotation risk as the other. And I have Senderos in my team.

              Hmmm ... good one!! About the same as Torres and Carroll bundled as a package deal?

              x + y = 1.10

              x = bat
              y = ball

              Bat costs $1 more than the ball, so x = y + 1

              2y + 1 = 1.10
              2y = 0.10
              y = 0.05

              x = 1 + 0.05 = 1.05 $

                    Can i be honest ... after about 5 minutes of shifting apples and oranges around on my desk i developed a rather large insecurity and got resourceful.

      Raylor to Santon is good. Simpson would be better imo tho if u have the extra .2 to spend.

      Given, however the Supervorm points on the bench issue could raise it's head again. I'm playing Sturridge & am expecting something out of him. So Given for me.
