With Newcastle’s decision to appeal the recent FA charge against Yohan Cabaye, the availability of the midfield maestro was not entirely clear. However, the regulatory commission met on Wednesday and confirmed the original decision, handed out for a “kick out” at the Brighton defender Adam El-Abd, resulting in a three match ban that began last night with the Gameweek 23 fixture at Blackburn. Cabaye will now also miss the next two games against Aston Villa at home and Tottenham away.

Also falling foul of the disciplinary panjandrums this week was Chelsea’s ever-present left back, Ashley Cole. Having already been booked just before the interval of Tuesday’s clash with Swansea for a barge into Gylfi Sigurðsson, Cole was dismissed with a second yellow dished out after a scything challenge on Nathan Dyer. The resulting one match ban means he will miss the weekend fixture with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea now forced to field an alternative left-back for the first time in 65 premier league games.

There were a few choice names manoeuvring themselves onto the tightrope radar in midweek, with Cole’s Chelsea team-mate, Raul Meireles, picking up his seventh domestic yellow of a season where Chelsea lead the way for disciplinary points, and Stoke’s Robert Huth adding to his already impressive haul of cautions this season. The Tuesday night card was his twelfth in all competitions, and seventh in domestic play. Trumping them both however, was Blackburn’s Jason Lowe, who despite only committing 16 fouls in the league this season (by contrast, Norwich captain Grant Holt has 54), is the first to accrue nine yellow cards from league and cup. Lowe, Huth and Meireles can now all be found moving up a place on the suspension tightrope widget, while a list of the banned players for the gameweek 24 weekend is below.

GAMEWEEK 24 BANS

  • Yakubu (BLA) – 1 Red for serious foul play (last of 3 matches)
  • Ashley Cole (CHE) – 1 Red for 2 Yellows (1 match)
  • Mario Balotelli (MCI) – FA Charge (third of 4 matches)
  • Yohan Cabaye (NEW) – FA Charge (second of 3 matches)
  • Karl Henry (WOL) – 1 Red for serious foul play (second of 3 matches)

          That's right.
4 in the Premier League and 3 in domestic cups puts him on 7. It's 10 for a 2 match ban.
The additional 5 he's received in the Europa League put him on 12 overall this season.

For those on a WC here a guide to Cheap defensive options.

Senderos- Priced at £4.3m the Swiss looks like a bargain given Fulham’s kind run of fixtures. He seems to be more nailed on than his Fulham companion Stephen Kelly(£3.9m) and shows attacking potential from set-pieces.
    Next 5- MC(A),STO(H),QPR(A),WOL(H),AV(A).

Taiwo- The Nigerian defender on loan for the rest of the season has arrived at a price of £4.5m and shows more attacking potential that most full-backs. But he faces competition from A.Traore(£5.5m) for the Left-Back spot. With QPR also recruiting Onuoha(£4.6m) and possibly Blackburn rebel Samba(£5.4m) the QPR defence is uncertain.
    Next 5- WOL(H),BLA(A),FUL(H),EVE(H),BOL(A).

Caulker- Swansea man Steven Caulker has caught the eye after returing from injury at only £3.9m,later rising to £4.0m. Caulker has played all 90 minutes in the Swans last 8 games except from the Spurs game in which he was Ineligible. The only risk is that many Fantasy Managers won’t want to double up on Swansea defence with both Caulker and Vorm(£5.2) during a difficult time fixture wise for the Swans.
    Next 5- WBA(A),NOR(H),STO(A),WIG(A),MC(H).

Santon- The Italian has managed to do the unthinkable and keep set-piece dangerman Ryan Taylor(£5.4m) out of the side. Santon has also look dangerous with his overlapping runs from the left and has assist potential and with Simpson now at £4.4m many have swiched to the Italian to save that £0.2m.
    Next 5- AV(H),TOT(A),WOL(H),SUN(H),ARS(A).

McAuley- Showing some decent performances during the winter period, including the Clean Sheet at home to Man City McAuley has shown his true potential. Priced at £4.1m and somedecent fixtures coming up he’s certainly one to consider.
    Next 5- SWA(H),WOL(A),SUN(H),CHE(H),MU(A).

Shotton- After Jermain Pennant falling out with Tony Pulis the Defender has played on the Wing for a few games and also played at Right-Back. With the defender having good home fixtures coming up and being able to play in many different positions he provides a cheap way into the Stoke defence.
    Next 5- SUN(H),FUL(A),SWA(H),NOR(H),CHE(A).

J.Evans- After the recent injury crisis the United man has become a key figure in the United backline. The Northern-Irishman is set to keep his place in the long term with Vidic out for the rest of he season and Ferdinand(£6.4m) and Jones(£6.5m) both doubtful. Priced at £4.5m you can't go wrong with United coverage for that small price.
    Next 5- CHE(A),LIV(H),NOR(A),TOT(A),WBA(H).

Clark- Clark has come into the spotlight after playing the last few games. He has become more involved in play and picked up an Assist and Bonus Point in the Villa vs Wolves game. He's set to keep his place in midfield after injuries to Delph,Jenas and Herd and keeping Bannan(£4.5) out of the side.
    Next 5- NEW(A),MC(H),WIG(A),BLA(A),FUL(H).

go for it. mata has been a nightmare for his price, a nightmare that will probably do well gw26-28 but is it worth waiting for? not for me, even then nasri would have BLA, and BOL. i do think it's a bit of a gamble as nasri still isn't 100% nailed on but avoiding all things chelsea right now looks a good option

Only once over 3 points in last 9 gameweeks is not exactly value
He is such an 'almost' player , and even now teases at being on pens

Nasri seems to start most if a little deep , I saw slight hints of form in the everton game and ad you say nice fixtures next 4 ..and then in theory could become nani

Not a sess fan and that boat had gone and Walters sends me cold

The sensible thing would be to use my spare 1.5m upgrading my suspect defence
But hey bad season needs a differential catch up , old double chin Samir may be the man !

        Thanks

Dont think u should get rid of walters, home form is good and stoke fixtures are hard to ignore. however, am thinking starting dempsey ahead of bale, dempsey fares better against top 7 teams than bale does! hope this helps

not a great deal you can do without disrupting your midfield... apart from a straight swap Fletcher> any other cheapie forward... unless you decide to dump Aguero just as City hit their easy run...

he's been a pretty decent budget option up till now... and all his goals seem to come away from home... so it might be worth waiting a week...

I can't decide which transfer to make:

    A) Fletcher => Ba
    B) Gabbidon, Shotton or Clark => BAE

My defense is weak and I would like to avoid BAE's price increase if possible. On the other hand I definitely want to get Ba in the team. A or B?

    Evening all.

    Team this GW is

    Vorm (Mignolet)

    Santon / J Evans / Richards (Shotton / Senderos)

    Silva / Bale / Demps / Sess / Valencia

    Fletch / RVP (Studge)

I cant decide whether to play Vorm or Mignolet? I've got x2 frees and was thinking of Studge > Ba and Fletch > Cisse. Any thoughts? I'd prob drop Demps or Valencia to the bench (gasp!)

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    Vorm Krul
    Richards Evans Simpson Huth Kelly
    Silva Bale Dempsey Walters McClean
    RVP Dzeko Zamora

Leaves enough to get in Ba for Zamora in a couple of weeks, and eventually move Dzeko to Rooney when Utd's fixtures look up in about 4 weeks.

With the toughening fixtures, Bellamy's going out the door. Question mark is more over Zamora, I know he's not exactly prolific but the R's next few really are very kind. Not keen on Cisse

fixtures say yes, form says no. bellamy looks like he is enjoying his football a lot at the moment and playing really well. Liverpool also starting to look much better

on checking maybe bobby z is better as his fixtures are appealing and you know if he does perform he's good to go for the next 5 week or so, Liverpools fixtures are very tufffff and they dont play in 3 weeks time.

i agree on Bellamy's form... he looked good the other night... but i still think Dalglish will bring Suarez straight back... so will it be Carroll or Bellamy that are more likely to end up as sub?

My team for GW24 is as it stands:

    Krul
    Enrique Kompany ShawX
    Bale Valencia Silva Dempsey Sess
    RVP Aguero

    Subs: Mignolet Graham Caulker Sendeross

Need to find a way over the next 2 weeks to bring in Ba for Graham.
Obvious choice is to drop one of the Fab 5, but which one?

    Any thoughts?
