Better late than never, we bring you the regular Monday post-Gameweek round-up. We turn our attentions to West Brom’s reinvigorated striker, the gradual ascent of the blue half of Merseyside and discuss the merits of template Fantasy squads in the light of some devastating displays from some frontline alternatives…

The Player

Peter Odemwingie might just have shaken off a stubborn case of “difficult second season syndrome” with his hat-trick in the 5-1 demolition of Wolves; goals which hammered the final nail in Mick McCarthy’s Molineux coffin. The Nigerian’s strikes were his first for six appearances in a season blighted by injury and West Brom’s inability to settle on a formation and a front pairing that could exploit his undoubted ability.

While Roy Hodgson’s side remain one of the league’s most frustrating sources of Fantasy talent, there are signs of progress. The Baggies boss has turned to Marc-Antoine Fortune to lead his attack in recent weeks, shifting to a 4-3-3 formation that has brought success – particularly away from home. A 2-1 win at Stoke was followed by a point at Fulham and, while the defeat to Swansea maintained the dreadful form at the Hawthorns, Sunday’s win over Wolves could well provide a platform for better things.

Odemwingie came back onto our Watchlist radars just prior to Gameweek 21 but it’s taken this long for him to offer a real reminder of his potential. The Baggies’ schedule offers him few favours, with tough encounters against Chelsea, Newcastle and United to come in the next five Gameweeks, although, as we saw last season, Odemwingie has little respect for reputation. He scored goals against top class opposition – breaching the Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs defences on his way to a 15-goal haul, with 9 assists thrown in.

Inevitably, Odemwingie went into this season as a hot property and a 7.5 initial value did him little favours once the form wavered and injuries struck. Having dropped to 7.2 now, he demands further attention – mainly as a potential differential which could break up the template attacks created by the consistent form of Robin Van Persie and the value offered by Demba Ba. Those looking to break the mould and shake up their established front three could do worse that to revisit Odemwingie – a differential with proven pedigree, with form and confidence flowing.

The Team

Like Odemwingie, Everton have done little to curry favour with Fantasy managers this term. A desperate struggle for goals, coupled with a back four which has remained resolute without returning clean sheets, have given us little to go on. Saturday’s 2-0 win over Chelsea, however, may well signal the need to reconsider what’s on offer.

Two consecutive clean sheets at Goodison, against City and Chelsea, have, at last, produced quantifiable returns from a defence that has continued to look one of the most robust in the league. The recent boost has seen Leighton Baines sneak into the top five Fantasy Premier League rankings for defenders, even though the left-back has returned just a single goal and assist since Gameweek 12.

More attacking returns may yet come for Baines if David Moyes’ side can continue to show a sharper cutting edge in attack. The re-introduction of Landon Donovan and Steven Pienaar appear to have added a new level of creativity to the Toffees’ midfield, while Darron Gibson has already found his range from distance with the winner against City.

Donovan’s run of league games is now over – he’ll make his last appearance against Blackpool in the FA Cup this weekend and this will be a concern for Moyes. The American has provided three assists in seven league games in his second loan spell at the club – his form has been the catalyst for the recent revival.

Pienaar has the ability to takeover the mantle, however. He will remain at Goodison for the rest of the season, and maybe beyond. The South African has shown enough in his two games so far to suggest that he can ignite a flaccid attack – with Nikica Jelavic, absent with a stomach injury at the weekend – perhaps an eventual beneficiary of the South African’s busy left flank displays.

A blank in Gameweek 26 offers Fantasy managers time to take stock – following that, Everton have three home games in five, with Spurs, Arsenal and West Brom the visitors. Indeed, Everton’s run-in is favourable – suggesting that if Moyes can harness this recent upturn in form, he may yet steer the Merseysiders to an unlikely top eight finish.

The Talking Point

Long after Saturday’s Knee Jerk wore off, there’s no doubting that the handsome tallies delivered by Wayne Rooney and Emmanuel Adebayor carried some impact.

As mentioned earlier in the digest, with the January wildcard and the unshakable form of Van Persie, coupled with Ba’s irresistible value, we’ve seen the emergence of a template forward line. Add Sergio Aguro, on the promise that he’ll deliver in his forthcoming home fixtures, and you have your tri-force attack sorted.

What’s alarming, is that we’ve also seen a “cookie cutter” midfield emerge in recent weeks – the form of Clint Dempsey, Stephane Sessegnon and Gareth Bale have made them coveted assets – almost essential. Partner them with two of David Silva, Antonio Valencia and James McClean and you pretty much have the midfield settled too.

With fixtures favouring these players for several weeks to come, there’s no real urgency to move away from what works. Gameweek 25 did offer a jolt however, a real reminder of the quality that lies elsewhere.

Rooney’s form will be a major concern for those without United coverage – his link up with Valencia continues to bring profit and there will plenty wondering if Aguero can measure up over his two Etihad fixtures with Blackburn and Bolton.

Time will tell, but what is certain is that, right now, the fortunes of managers in the upper echelons of min-leagues appear to rest on the profits gained from a small collection of players. It’s a scenario that offers very little movement and reduces the chances of closing a deficit unless risks are taken. Thankfully for those needing to seek differentials, the likes of Adebayor and Rooney reminded us that there are potentially devastating alternatives on offer.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I really wish I could read this...do you think the headline is true? Honestly as a Chelsea fan the only coach I wouldn't mind seeing him sacked for is Guus Hiddink, Unless Guus and Roman are tying the knot behind the scenes, which they may be, I'd like to see AVB go on

think you should be looking to get 2-3 barca and 2-3 madrid. xabi alonso and callejon from madrid are good mid priced/cheap options in mf. then look to get a barca mf or defender.

get gomez instead of gomis i'd say. but lyon attack vs apoel could be very profitable. thats the only thing im concerned about as im lacking lyon attack

personally think ronaldo over benzema but thats a matter of opinion.

here's my team if it helps at all. like you dont know some of the players and still tinkering with my team:

      lloris, sommer
alves, kone, hubocan, campagnaro, paulo jorge
      xavi, kroos, callejon, witsel, frei
      messi, ronaldo, gomez

Hmm I like it. Very balanced.

        2 cents worth:
        1) Lombaerts worth the 0.5 over Hubocan. He's a beast in defence.
        2) Downgrade Alves to Abidal and try to get Ramos/Pepe/Boateng in there, imo.
        3) Doubling up on Lyon isn't worth it. APOEL are an in-form attack and Lyon will concede. Get rid of Kone for Ramos/Boateng.
        4) I like your front 8. Can you do Frei > Manduca? I can't see Basel doing any damage.

          1) ok think i can fit him in
          2) hmmm maybe. its just i like alves chances for an assist or goal.
          3) ok working on it
          4) should i do frei to manduca or gonalons?

ok heres my options in defense:

keep alves and hubocan and drop kone and campanaro for boateng and a 4.3 defender

alves, lombaerts, william b (3.9 defender for apoel), and rafinha since you only need to play 2 defenders min

any other combo with alves and paulo jorge that adds up to 15 max

abidal, boateng, lombaerts and a 5.0 defender (unless i keep frei over manduca then i can have a 5.1)

I'd get Abidal & Boateng. UCL is all about a strong defence and you're getting there. Also, I'd get Manduca instead of Frei - Basel won't cope up with Madrid, whereas APOEL has a chance.

    Morning deadzone

This is the team that I will be working towards between now and GW30. No hits. Obviously injuries and form might affect this, but am I going in the right direction? I've got a 95 pt deficit to overcome. But the leader appears to be a casual player. Do I need to start looking at more differentials?

    Krul/Mignolet
    Enrique, BAE, Evans, (Santon/ Caulker)
    Nani, Bale, Yaya, Siggy/Moses
    RVP, Rooney, Adebayor

Seems fine to me. Personally I would have Ba over Adebayor. The extra cash might be enough to have Silva over Yaya. I know they are hardly differentials but I think balance is necessary.

Defenitely keeping silva for the next two. Looking at switching sometime after that. Then citys fixtures go down and man utd and spurs go up. So i'm thinking Nani and Yaya might be better than Silva. Got Silva in REAL late so can sell him for 10.4m. Makes getting rid easier.

Yes. Either 29 or 31 for Ade.

This team doesn't really have any differentials. I'm wondering if I should go for some punts. But punting on the likes of Torres (twice), Barfa and Bendtner (twice) are the reason I am 95 points down in the first place!!

I'll be keeping my eye on VDV's fitness and form instead of adebayor. Any other potential big scoring differentials?

The three differentials that I'm keeping watch over are Taiwo (QPR), Mackie (QPR) and Pienaar (Ev).

You have to include McClean and Graham in the mix too. Both are cheap and on form.

If you look at the season ticker then you can make transfers as necessary according to fixtures to bring one or more of them in.

Looking sound. Getting rid of Silva for Yaya is daft, imo. As much as you're looking for differentials, they both are in separate leagues and there's better value to be found than Yaya - Sess/McClean/Valencia.

I like the look of Glen Johnson as a differential, if you can afford him. Keep an eye on Adebayor cos he's known to shine for 2-3 weeks and hibernate for the next 8 weeks, despite good fixtures. He comes across one of those players who's never finished a season on a good note.

Arsenal defence for the run in should be much better with Sagna and Gibbs back. But if the DGW falls from GW28 onwards, then Liverpool would defenitely be the better option.

You definitely need to overhaul your defense but I wouldn't focus on a long term team, especially for midfield and forwards where form is everything. If you want Rooney you need to get him in soon while he's scoring, he could be garbage by GW30. And with the cash you have if you want a balanced team you might have to sacrifice RVP to get him in.

This game has become more about who to bench and captain then about who to sell or buy. That's the most standard front 8 around so this decision is pretty crucial. I'd say bench Bale, he doesn't seem to score points against the big teams.

yeah, that's a good point. Baggies are so poor at home for some reasons and maybe either McClean or Sess will get points.

How about Sigurdsson? Which will you choose between him and Sess?

I think it's a myth honestly. You've been scathed by injuries and as much as you've been inconsistent at home, all those losses were to good teams in the top half of the table. A draw vs City, when all were fit, was a beast of a result, I thought.

Benching Bale is not an option IMO. Arse v Spurs is usally a high scoring affair and I wouldnt want to miss out on possible BIG points.

You have two relative cheapies in Siggs and McClean. I assume you went down that line so you can bench one every week. So choose one.

I will be benching Siggs this week

What will people do if Aguero struggles again with a 2 pointer and Rooney does well against Norwich? Will you hold fast with Aguero for the second good fixture or sell in frustration to beat the price rise/drop?

This is the main reason i'd consider bringing in Ba, if i bring him in, i captain him, its very much a gamble. Wolves will now be hard to judge, if they get in a new manager, could that game change complexion? It's very easy to imagine it being 5-0 but realistically...it will probably be much closer than that...oh i dont know what to think

gotcha. who are your forwards right now? very true. i guess it could but i still think ba could score against most defenses. and the change could hurt wolves at first. adjustment to the new manager and possible new tactics could mean they dont play too well the first couple games

can't see newcastle not scoring or losing and ba will probably take part in at least a goal, probably more. thats the way i see it

I don't get how that's easy, Dempsey = poor away, Bale = arsenal away

Siggy = Stoke away, Swansea finally doing well away from home, takes all set pieces, Stoke lost several in a row and no Huth, vulnerable at the back...

Not sure it's really all that easy!

It isnt that easy to be fair. But it still has to be Siggy at the end of the day.

I'm not dropping Bale or Dempsey with their form and potential for scoring massive points. Might miss an assist or a goal from Siggy but Stoke v Swans will still be a tight game so just as likely won't.

yeah, I have the same problem. But Baggies are so poor at home. So Benching Sess might not be a good idea.

It is a matter of how highly you rate Stoke defense at home to Swans (to play Siggy). I am thinking of benching Siggy for now and play Sess.

"Where can I find her sex tapes? She's got me turned on"

Irony however is that Rukawa was immune to her. He called her "ugly girl" & "fake boobs"

I see that Demba Ba's price has stopped rocketing. It's frustrating sometimes with these things. He went up 0.4 in the space of a week (and would have gone further had it not been for the 'invisible' rise cap). And that was all in the lead up to playing Spurs away, a game they were never going to do that well in.

Now he's got a nice comfortable home game against Wolves ahead he has hasnt risen at all (I'm not counting the rise on saturday as that was blatently down to him being on 150+% waiting to rise after deadline day). If people could have waited then they could have saved me a lot of cash and themselves a fairly predictable 2pter from Demba 🙁

Also think you might be few weeks early on doubling up on Utd. Nani was in bad form before his injury and now has to compete with Toni V and Ashley Young for his spot. But could be a good gamble

It just depends on the circumstances and in this case getting out Huth(suspended) and Morison(strangely out-of favour) and replacing them with 90minute men with tasty fixtures looks to be a good bet.

Ok I guess this will be asked a million times on here before now and the next GW so we may as well get started on it:

Ba or Aguero (or even RVP) for the armband?

I'm nailing my flag to Aguero. The guy is a beast at home and is very likely playing the already poor B'burn DF without Samba. I also feel that the McCarthy sacking casts too much uncertainty on what will happen in the Newc v Wolves game to captain Demba

Ba over Aguero for these reasons (apart from the ones you mentioned)
      1) 2 week break for Ba = super fresh. 2 Europa games for City.
      2) Aguero will mostly get subbed off early. Mancini isn't going to be a Wenger and let him play a full game.
      3) We all know what happens the week after Ba scores a 2-pointer 😉

I have RVP, Ba and Zamora...they all have home games so Bale was my first choice to sit out. I was just doubting making the decision because Bale in my opinion has the best potential to pull off a big gameweek compared to my other midfielders(eventhough he has the toughest away match).

    My team.
    Mignolet, Friedel
    Evans Lescott Kompany Caulker Simpson
    Silva Bale Dyer Mcclean Chamberlain
    Graham Adebayor RVP

Graham was captain. Had a cool 87 points this weekend. I was completely out of my mini-league as i was 180 points behind the leader. Dramatically, have covered 90 points in the last 2 gameweeks.

    Here’s his team.
    Hart Morriera
Oshea Assou Ekotto Konscielny Smalling Simpson
    Bale Silva Dempsey Valencia Mcclean
    Welbeck BA Dzeko

Ba for Adebayor or Aguero Evra for Adebayor and Lescott/Kompany?
    Alternate suggestions?

It's up to you if you want more differentials. You can cover Ba or hope Aguero scores more. The leader is quite silly to not have RVP etc.Wish I was leading you by that much, you'd never catch me. 😉

First off nice gameweek score. I personally had one of my worst gameweeks, only 39 points.

Now I prefer Ba over Aguero, but both have several favorable encounters for the weeks to come, so I think you'll do good with whichever one you choose.
However, that Evra option seems tempting since MU will have many cleansheet opportunities from gameweek 28 and on. With your points is it possible to choose just Ba or Aguero and then get Evra later on?

Ok, finally managed to face the carnage of the last gw (28pts ouch!). So I've applied some majory surgery and taken a 4pt hit to come up with this lot:

    Krul(Lindy)
    JEvans Richards Caulker (Kelly Dawson)
    McLean Bale Silva Dempsey (Siggy)
    Roon RVP(v) Aguero (C)

Points out of 10? Any further room for improvement?

Need help. I am 40 points clear in mini league of 70 strong, I have the better team defo over guy in second. However he has gone 3 city players at the back and I have gone silva and aguero as well as kompany. Should I go similar or not panic? His midfield is Ramsey, Walters, bale, Sinclair and ferguson which is poor. Some feedback from people would be great. Just got worried after villa game.
