With confirmation of John Terry’s exploratory operation this evening, along with the injury to Jose Bosingwa’s in the 3-1 defeat in Naples, we’ve seen some movement on our Watchlist. With Terry potentially facing up to six weeks or more on the sidelines, Gary Cahill looks to have the opportunity to cement his a starting role in the centre of the Chelsea back four ahead of a favourable trio of fixtures.

A possible absence for Jose Bosingwa would also strengthen Cahill’s claims. Lining up at left-back in tonight’s 3-1 defeat to Napoli, the much criticised Bosingwa was forced off on 11 minutes with what was thought to be a hamstring injury. A spell on the sidelines would surely see Branislav Ivanovic continue in the right-back role for the foreseeable future, paving the way for Cahill to partner David Luiz in the centre of Andre Villas-Boas’ defence. It’s also interesting to note that Cahill was included on the teamsheet, at the expense of Luiz, left behind at Chelsea’s hotel prior to tonight’s game. Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed post-match that the scribbles were genuine.

Given the absence of Terry and the recent form of the Chelsea back four, the prospect of defensive returns from a Blues defender would seem bleak. However, Chelsea have conceded five goals in their last five league games, keeping two clean sheets – three of those five goals conceded were also against United. More significantly they welcome both Bolton and Stoke to Stamford Bridge in the next three, with a trip to West Brom providing the filling in a sandwich of fixtures that looks appealing.

Both Bolton and Stoke rank amongst the most impotent attacks right now. The Trotters have scored just a single goal in their last three league games, while Stoke have notched just two goals in their last five. West Brom meanwhile, despite fetching five at Molineux last time out, have scored just three goals in their last five matches in front of their home fans.

With clean sheets at a premium outside of United and City, the statistics clearly indicate that Chelsea, despite the obvious frailties on show, have decent defensive prospects over the next three and with Cahill available for 5.2, he is the cheapest member of the rearguard. The former Bolton man will also bring a proven goal threat at set-plays, to help fill the void left by his skipper Terry – scorer of four goals this term.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Who to Bench?
    Silva (BLA)
    Mata (BOL)
    McClean (wba)
    Sess (wba)
    Dempsey (qpr)
    Aguero (BLA)
    Ba (WOL)
    Zamora (FUL)

    My choice would be Sess or Zamora leaning towards playing ZamZam because of Sess' away fixture

        I couldn't decide which to get with my January wildcard and thought to myself: sure why not both? and it's worked out since. Except last week I benched McClean, played Sess and missed McClean's goal. Sess is gone next week unless he produces this weekend

          Not Bale, cos you'll surely want him back in 2 weeks. Maybe for someone else - Dempsey/Sess?

          Raylor's fixtures look better, plus he's on FKs, a few corners, etc.

          Btw I don't know how you can justify WC-ing in gw28, with all the cancelled games in gw29 and potential DGWs later. I'm planning to save up my WC for the DGWs - rather tasty ones if the postponements materialize. 🙂

              Well, nothing's confirmed....thats fo sho. Guess you should save up your FTs, just in case there's no news about the DGWs before the deadline.

                Yeah, I think maybe you're right. How's this for a short term plan?

                GW26: Huth -> Raylor
                GW27: Rangel -> JEvans, or Schwarzer -> Lindegaard
                GW28: Silva & Aguero -> Nani & Rooney

    Good morning Dead Zone... I'm back in Scotland now, and it seems that jet lag has slowly snuck up on me... I seemed fine on Monday afternoon when I arrived, and even Monday night was a normal sleep... but last night just hit me like a tonne of bricks... I crashed after dinner, which is why I'm up at 3am typing this...

    I just read ColeHole's team reviews, and thoroughly enjoyed them... I was wondering when the other guys in my group would show up... great contribution man, and a brilliant idea...

    This Cup is just tantalising now...

      Mornin' Zep!

      Nice to have you back... hope you had a bash!

      4vetti - Guess you'd have met by now (very active in the evening hours)
      ColeHole - who you'd have met too and is a fellow deadzoner.
      SleepTalk - usually very active close to the deadline but does show up in the evening hours.

      To give you a heads-up, JKisthe might buzz you, seeking some photoshop help 😉

    Anyone care to comment on this:

    Sorenson/Vorm
    Evans, Richards, Caulker, Simpson, Bosingwa
    Bale, Silva, Dempsey McLean, Valencia,
    RvP, Aguero, Ba

    With 0.1 and a free transfer.

      It seems as though Bos could be out for a few weeks at least, perhaps you could take a punt on R.Taylor playing right mid to get you some CS/attacking points for the next few weeks...

      Personally, I'd keep Valencia and upgrade the defense... just play your other front 7...

      I would not no anything. Save the transfer so you have two next week. Your team is solid. Defense of Evans, Richards and Simpson this week is strong. Hold fire..... useful to have 2FT.

    2 freebies, 0.0m in the bank, WCing in GW28. Which is best?

    a) Huth -> Cahill (bench Rangel and save a transfer)
    b) Huth -> Raylor (bench Rangel and save a transfer)
    c) Huth & Bale (can sell for 9.3m) -> Cahill & Mata (bench Rangel)
    d) Huth & Bale (can sell for 9.3m) -> Raylor & Mata (bench Rangel)

    Sorenson (Schwarzer)
    Kompany, Simpson, Rangel, (Caulker), (Huth)
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Moses, (Siggy)
    RVP, Aguero, Ba

        I'd go B too. D is slightly tempting considering you still have a WC and won't lose too much on Bale. But I'd stick with him regardless of his fixtures.

        If I do hold off, how's this for a short term plan?

        GW26: Huth -> Raylor/Cahill

    great. pratik was all set to take a 4 point hit before last night, ready to transfer out Cahill. No need trying to keep quiet about things, the damn article may as well be titled "Keep Cahilll Pratik!!!"

    0-1 in group unless i pick a better captain and it cant be the same captain. Or i will need to use options i planned to bench as differentials. Or i need to do a rvp->rooney for -4 and captain rooney kind of move. Can anyone offer a realistic scenario where i have a chance this week? 🙁

        Assuming he did Clark > Evans

        both of you have:
        rvp, aguero, ba, silva, bale, dempsey, sessegnon, richards

        you:
        sorro, verm, santon (evans dyer)

        him:
        krul, evans, cahill (taiwo senderos) + 4

        What makes you think you can't win? You have every chance, imo. Plus (C) choices could be different too. Chin up, Fuz!

    What are people's thoughts on Dzeko this week?
    I'd love to switch him for Kun but it would require a 4pt hit
    Worth it or should I chance Dzeko knowing I've got Walters as sub?
    Krul ( Vorm)
    Raylor Kompany Evans (Kelly Taiwo)
    Sliva Sess Bale Dempsey (Walters)
    RVP Ba Dzeko

    Walters and Dzeko > Kun and McLean ?

    This would also give me the top 4 def, top 5 mids, top 3 fwd !

    well ENR, or anyone who cares to discuss, what to make of AVB now? I know you said give him a year, but i also know you had a starting XI in mind. Can you make sense out of any of his decisions yesterday? He may not be a terrible manager, much like de gea isnt a terrible keeper, but he certainly has the deer in the headlights look about him lately.

          He has a striker who misses chances a 10 yr old would score, a sulky winger who wants to be striker, an successful old guard who still have value as players but are also a bit of a cancer in the club and in a way his hands are tied; what's he supposed to do?

      Well firstly I wasnt surprised with his team selection last night - Lamps/Cole didn't look at their best when they came on too, I'd owe that to the slow recovery from injury, once you're in thirties.

      1) The only real problem with team selection was no Essien/Romeu (no holding mids) - Meireles was awful yesterday and Ramires isn't back to his pre-injury pace/beast-ness yet. I'd have brought a holding mid immediately after we were ahead, however negative it may seem. But clearly he was greedy and went for more goals. All our defenders, except perhaps Cole, were terrible last night (especially Ivanovic). So were the mids, when it came to pressing/marking their men. The Drog was barely in the game throughout, but atleast he had the CBs busy on him all the time - this front 3 is still our best front 3 though.

      2) My other problem was with the formation, and has been for quite a while. Clearly, we aren't a 4-3-3 team with quality wingers. It has to be 4-4-2 and there's no doubt in my mind that we'll excel in that formation, with Studge in the central role complementing Drog.

      But I'm a firm believer he needs more time. Rome wasn't built in a day. So wasn't the team built by the Special One - took him a good year's time to bring us to the upper echelons. I know as cliche it might sound, we are in the transition phase and I think Roman knows it, else he wouldn't have brought a young manager such as AVB to rejuvenate the squad. We need more quality in midfield - the reason why our attack (especially Torres) & defense is failing.

      #TeamAVB

        fair enough. i hope i dont come off as a hater. sometimes good managers get caught in a bad situation when players feel like they have more job security and aren't collectively on board with the manager's philosophy. Trust me as an NFL Washington Redskins fan, ive been witnessing it for about 20 years running. That being said, i cant come up with a good reason to omit a DM in the XI.

    Dude, i may have just come back from a night outm, but even i now cahill; is not worth it. Chelsea defence is not worth any investment. No returns. they will leak goals against any team. no matter the fixtures. Cahill not worth it!

            He will be in a couple of weeks probably for the first away game where city have struggled. I imagine we could see him on the bench for the next two home games.

    Current squad:

    Vorm Kenny
    Simpson Richards Evans Senderos Kelly
    Bale Silva Dempsey McLean Valencia
    RVP Aguero Ba

    1 FT 2.4 in the bank.

    Plan is to get Rooney in for Aguero in GW 28, so need around 1m in the bank for that.

    Not sure what to do with Valencia - I can field a decent front 7 without him so could keep him and maybe use my FT to shore up the defence or should I replace him?

    Current options:
    1. Valencia -> Mata
    2. Valencia -> Nani (will involve a bit more shuffling around to get Rooney)
    3. Senderos -> Raylor (double up on Newcastle)
    4. Senderos -> Cahill
    5. Kenny -> Krul (QPR have decent fixtures but not convinced by their defence)

      save it. the impact one transfer to your current team for this week will pale in comparison to having two FTs saved up for these unscheduled blanks in gw 29, if they stay blank.

      I used to surf back in my twenties, my first board was a little smaller than that & i regretted it... personally for a 1st board i would go with a mini mal... go bigger than the rentals (about 8 foot) and you'll have more fun... save the little hot dog boards for when you've really nailed it...
