International friendly week always fills Fantasy managers with dread. Already, we’ve seen a number of call-offs; the likes of Papiss Cisse, Didier Drogba, Rafael Van der Vaart and Phil Bardsley are all nursing apparent injuries ahead of the weekend. Elsewhere, Peter Odemwingie, Mark Schwarzer and Javier Hernandez have long-distance games on the agenda. All we can do now is watch on, cross our fingers, and hope none of our best-laid plans are scuppered:

Rafael Van der Vaart is one of a number of players to withdraw from international action. While most of the absentees could be classified as no more than precautionary, the Dutch FA confirmed Van der Vaart picked up an ankle injury at the Emirates on Sunday, and has been ruled out of Holland’s friendly with England tomorrow. Van der Vaart has only just returned from a calf problem, playing the second half in the 5-2 defeat at Arsenal- Harry Redknapp is likely to be cautious this weekend against United, for fear of further time on the sidelines for the Dutchman.

Redknapp has more injury worries, with the news that Kyle Walker has withdrawn from the England squad after he, too, picked up an ankle problem at Arsenal. With Vedran Corluka farmed out on loan, the Spurs boss has recalled Adam Smith from a loan spell at Leeds, perhaps raising question marks over Walker’s availability for this weekend’s home clash against the champions.

Newcastle have confirmed Papiss Demba Cisse picked up a slight groin injury in the 2-2 draw with Wolves. The forward was subbed off just after the hour mark with the problem and has since pulled out of Senegal’s game against South Africa, having been assessed by the club’s medical staff ahead of Sunday’s derby with Sunderland.

Didier Drogba is out of Ivory Coast’s friendly with Guinea. The Chelsea forward picked up a knee problem in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Bolton and is now undergoing treatment, with the Blues medical department monitoring his progress ahead of the trip to West Brom.

Aaron Ramsey has been ruled out of the Gary Speed Memorial match tomorrow evening. The Arsenal man was due to skipper Wales against Costa Rica but has failed to recover from an ankle injury picked up in the FA Cup defeat at Sunderland earlier this month.

Stephen Kelly has pulled out of the Republic of Ireland squad with a thigh problem. The right-back played the entire match in Fulham’s win at QPR on Saturday and has now established himself as an integral part of Martin Jol’s back-four, starting the last nine game for the Cottagers.

Phil Bardsley may miss out for Sunderland this weekend. The full-back has withdrawn from the Scotland squad due to a calf problem, with reports suggesting he may have torn the muscle. Bardsley is set for scans ahead of his side’s trip to Newcastle- his omission could perhaps see John O’Shea move from the centre to right-back, with Matt Kilgallon coming into the heart of defence.

Glen Johnson has, this afternoon, become the fifth player to pull out of the England squad to face Holland. The right-back is said to have trained this morning but then reported an unspecified “minor problem“ and will head back to Anfield to be assessed.

Daniel Agger has ruled himself out of contention for Denmark’s game against Russia tomorrow. The centre-half is feared to have sustained a broken rib in the Carling Cup win over Cardiff and, although there has been no official confirmation of a definite absence, his withdrawal will give his Fantasy owners cause for concern, particularly with Liverpool’s double gameweek just around the corner.

Alan Hutton is making his way back to Aston Villa after pulling out of the Scotland squad to face Slovenia. The right-back is said to have suffered pain in the top of his hamstring and, after being assessed by the Scotland doctors, has been sent back to the midlands for further examination.

Elsewhere, a handful of players face extended travel periods this midweek. Javier Hernandez turns out for Mexico at 1am Thursday in a home clash against Colombia. With United not playing until Sunday, though, his Fantasy owners will be hopeful the forward will have enough recovery time to feature in the trip to White Hart Lane.

Victor Moses and Peter Odemwingie feature for Nigeria, as the Super Eagles travel to Rwanda in an African Cup of Nations qualifier on Wednesday. Wigan keeper Ali Al-Habsi plays for Oman in a crucial World Cup qualifier against Thailand at 9.30am Wednesday and should have enough in the tank to be ready for Saturday’s game with Swansea.

Bolton’s on-loan star Ryo Miyaichi is set for his Japan debut against Uzbekistan at 10.30 tomorrow morning. Mark Schwarzer faces a home game for Australia against Saudi Arabia- this kicks off at 09.30 tomorrow morning and, with Fulham not playing till Sunday, their keeper looks to have plenty recovery time ahead of the home game with Wolves.

Finally, a little domestic news. Alex McLeish has talked up the prospects of Andreas Weimann after the youngster produced a series of outstanding displays in the Villa reserves. Weimann has grabbed two hat tricks in his last three games, with McLeish describing him as “one of the most natural finishers I have seen for quite some time.”

With Darren Bent likely to be ruled out for the season after rupturing ankle ligaments in the weekend draw at Wigan, Robbie Keane back in the US after his loan deal finished and Gabby Agbonlahor having only scored once since Gameweek 7, McLeish is in dire need of a goalscorer. Weimann –priced at a mere 5.0- may be on course for a first-team start ahead of a run of games that reads (bla, FUL, BOL) over the next three gameweeks.

Arsene Wenger’s post-match comments on Theo Walcott after the 5-2 win over Spurs were revealing. Admitting he had considered subbing off the winger after a section of the crowd began to criticise Walcott’s performance, Wenger explained he kept faith, as he feels that the winger’s style of play is unique amongst the Arsenal squad:

I felt that he has the qualities that, considering the rest of the team, are highly needed. He is a player who can be straight and go behind the defenders – nobody else is like that. He is a very direct player, he can sometimes miss a first touch but considering the balance of the team I thought it was important to keep him in the side.

Wenger’s line of thinking, in spite of the calls for Walcott’s exclusion, suggests he will not bow to pressure and is likely to lead to reduced game time for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. With Gervinho still being eased back into action after his African Cup of Nations exertions, Yossi Benayoun was given the nod ahead of the youngster on the left and with Walcott vindicating Wenger’s decision with a double against their north London rivals, Oxlade Chamberlain’s 5.4% owners may be set for a testing time ahead.

Reports suggest Tom Cleverley may return to action next week for Man United. The midfielder limped out of the Europa League loss to Ajax on Thursday with an ankle problem but scans have revealed there is no serious problem, meaning Cleverley could come back against Atletico Bilbao in the next round of European action.

Carlos Tevez returned to action for Man City this afternoon, as the Argentine steps up his fitness after months on the sidelines. Tevez started for City’s reserves in the 3-1 defeat by Preston but failed to make any impact before being subbed off at half time.

    Evening all!

Planning a non wildcard wildcard for GW28 now (8 pointer to set me up for rest of season)

    Hows does this sound?

    Aguero > Rooney
    Shawcross > Skrtel
    Senderos > Enrique
    Silva > Valencia/Walcott or Kompany > Evans

I wouldn't bother with the Aguero -> Rooney transfer for a hit. Aguero could easily outscore him that week.

Aguero away to Swans is unlikely to outscore Rooney at home to WBA, but doing it for a hit is risky.

Thought about that but the following week if they have a blank I would want to do Silva > Nani/Valencia and Aguero > Rooney for a hit so may as well do it for WBrom?

Jevans for the last spot. I quite like doing 8 point hits every 4-6 weeks to sort out any issues and fixture swings. It might not pay off in the short term but it often does in the long term.

Cheers pal, I figure as I dont have a wildcard left I have a chance to sort my side out with limited damage, basically the Liv defenders will not get points for minutes on pitch but my other defenders for that week could be on for minus points!

Liv's DGW is a bonus that week. I own Evans already and have money to get Rooney and will just swap Richards to Skrtel. Don't see anything in my team worth taking a hit for bar maybe Reina.

            Simpson ars
            Caulker MCI
            Senderos Benched
            Shawcross che

So may as well swap for Pool defenders for long term and could well outscore them all even with hits!

Cabaye's a bit like Cleverley but with set pieces. Never tempted by players in a 2 man central midfield, they just aren't worth it as they have to do their fair share of defensive duties and play quite deep

Keep Sess till GW 29 atleast.

Have you tried analysing how successful your Captain choices are?

So the amount of points your captain got, vs the points your highest scoring player each week could've got you.

I managed 346/688 points, 50% accuracy, and only captaining my highest scoring player 6 times out of 26.

Moyes will continue to play the same formation, Pienaar is certain to play on the left when fit, so Moyes will either play Cahill behind the striker and Osman wide right, or Osman off the striker with Drenthe or Coleman down the right.

          Krul (Mignolet)
          Simpson, Taiwo, Kompany (Evans, Caulker)
          Siggy, Bale, Silva, Dempsey (McClean)
          RvP, Ba, Aguero

1.2 in the bank with 2 free transfers and my wildcard left. What should i do or what should i be planning towards?

You're such a maverick, fooling the masses like that. I think you should be proud. Pretty sure that was AP's initial plan with McClean too before he actually turned out to be good.

Yeah, I know. I'm just saying that his initially "form" seemed more down to luck than actual talent.

I dunno, I'm probably wrong, I haven't seen him that much, but he hasn't really shone whenever I have seen him.

Tbf I was looking at him for a bit of a differential then with the FFS article and ur post came about (and obviously a lot of people, as they should, value your opinion) every man and his dog seems to be going for him, although im sure he will still be a differential in my mini leagues.

Yep. Glen Johnson's flagged now too, which should keep his price and differential status intact. Just think the goal threat of Skrtel is too good to ignore, and i could do with the funds as i want to get Rooney soon too. Sorry for misleading everyone into thinking i was getting him.

I'll forgive u. Skrtel definitely has the goal threat and he's having a really good season. Johnson is looking dangerous too and I also think hes playing as well as I've seen him for Liverpool. I think if I didn't have a WC I'd go for Skrtel if i was trying to get Rooney in also, but as I do I'm probably gonna have all 3 8)

Yeah, Johnson's been quite unlucky i think to have only scored 1 goal. Hit the woodwork on a couple of occasions, but he does shoot alot so that's going to be encouragement for his owners. He's definitely more fun to own by a mile, but as we all know, fun and fpl points don't always go hand in hand.

P.s. so jealous of you with your extra wildcard 😡

That's going to be such an advantage i think, in these next few gameweeks. As for me, i badly need City vs Chelsea to go ahead, otherwise i'd need to take a hit to field 10 in that week.

1 FT and .3 in the bank.

Any ideas for transfers over the next couple of weeks?

Taiwo to Kelly (if he is fit) and Rooney may have to be considered at some point in the near future. PS: we have same front 8.

            Vorm
            Evans Kompany Taiwo Senderos
            Bale Silva McClean Sigg Dempsey

Keep Dempsey until GW30 or 32. Lose Siggy or McLean, no rotation, I will be losing one of them in the next few weeks.

So Liverpool will be playing on the 10th, 13th, 18th & 21st of March. 4 games in 11 days is a busy schedule so there will definitely be rotation in there. I'm thinking Kelly will share match time with Johnson, Gerrard & Adam to maybe miss 1 of the 4. Henderson & Kuty to rotate along with Bellamy & Downing. Can see Skrtel & Suarez playing the lot though.

It's impossible. I don't understand it, everyone in my mini league seems to get similar scored despite having a fair few different players. I dropped from 8th to 10th this week despite scoring 47. Disillusioned with it all.

I blame myself for not listening to my gut more. Wanted Luiz last week but it gets to you when people on here keep saying he's shit, truth is, he is boss 8) Remember when he was essential from January last season?

Agree, always listen to your gut and don't be put off by what people say on here as they don't usually believe themselves, someone justs it and then the sheep all follow. No point hits are definetly working for me at the moment.

Kolarov is making a mockery of the mocking last season. His potential was clear for anyone with half a brain, and now - when starting - he's more than delivering on that potential.

Such a shame that he never did so back when he was actually first choice.

What are Sorenson owners doing? Surely he's back to second choice now. I have Mignolet as my other keeper and really can't see them getting a clean sheet against Newcastle this weekend.

Don't know, I don't really think any other keeper rotates well with Mignolet if we want him to have a good fixture this week too. It's messy.

Well I'm checking on the fitness of Vorm, as I'd be happy enough to play him away to Wigan, and sorting the keepers out at some point in the near future.

Pulis is always squirt with the media, but I don't feel comfortable with Sorensen to Begovic in case Begs gets dropped later, so I guess it'll be Schwarzer or Krul to come in. Or maybe even Reina..

Yeah tempted with Schwarzer but am now hearing news that he could potentially be rested this week.

Should I stick with my current keepers of Schwarzer & Mignolet even when I WC or get Reina & Bogdan, switching Reina after the 4 games in GW28/29/30 to Friedel?

If you get Reina keep him until season end, I'm also thinking of swapping one of those 2 for Reina, it depends on who I replace Clint with

Looks like my gamble on Saha has paid off. VDV injured again. LOL.

My next gamble is Kolarov who played the last 4. and got MOTM in his last game.

Saha was a nice gamble. You keeping him for the duration?

You know Clichy is due a start very soon though to mess that up.

Well see. If Kolarov doesnt play i can always switch to Enrique for DGW. But im sure hes got his spot after his last few performances.

No need to LOL at an injury, imho.

Yes, yes, I know I should lighten up but...

Indeed it would, but still no need to LOL at anyone's misfortune, even if you profit from it... imho.

Was going to shuffle my way into the DGW using 2 FTs this week and one the next. Now thinking about the WC for GW 28:

            Schwarzer, Bogdan
            Skyrtl, Enrique, Evans, Kelly, Simpson
            Bale, Dempsey, Gerrard, Morrison, McClean
            RVP, Rooney, Ba

that leaves 0.1 in the bank.

            Any improvements?

Hmmmmm. If Gerrard fails there is always Nani/Tony V, i'd also steer clear of McClean but otherwise it's pretty good.

              8.5/10 😆
