For those of you who didn’t see last week’s first foray into this new area, these articles aim to highlight the potential that a simple referee assignment can bring to the Gameweek proceedings. If last week was anything to go by, it seems a worthwhile exercise.

The north London derby was the game and Mike Dean the main protagonist. The man in the middle lived up to his reputation with not just the anticipated penalty – duly given for a foul on Tottenham’s Gareth Bale and dispatched by Emmanuel Adebayor – but also the predicted flurry of yellow cards at the Emirates last Sunday.

Eight cautions were made in total during the resounding 5-2 home win, with two of those earning a red card for the new England captain, Scott Parker. It’s only fair then that Mr Dean, the pick of last week’s trio of Michaels, gets the headline slot this time out.

Mike Dean

Now finding himself atop the season totals for penalties given (with nine so far) Dean has been handed a second consecutive derby assignment, as he treks the 280 miles up the A1 to take the reins of the Tyne-Wear derby, where Newcastle and Sunderland do battle at the Sports Direct Arena.

While Sunderland sit bottom of the penalties table with just a single spot-kick awarded in the league this season (won and missed by Seb Larsson), Newcastle are not much better off, with just two themselves. When we look at penalties conceded, however, that’s when the ears prick up. No team have more spot-kicks awarded against them than Newcastle (eight) and, while only six have found their way past Tim Krul, it’s still an omen that the tricky James McLean or Stéphane Sessègnon could take advantage of; Newcastle’s defenders best beware, then. Fresh from his two goals for Sweden in midweek, Larsson is still the presumed penalty taker despite that December miss and is in our thoughts this week, as is Demba Ba for the hosts.

Phil Dowd

Second up in our analysis is another refereeing heavyweight, with the Stoke-based official lined up to take charge of his 20th Premier League match this season, as West Brom take on Chelsea. Saturday’s game will pit the team with the most yellow cards this season (Chelsea, 55) against the referee to have handed out the greatest number of cautions (76 in 19 games). Don’t be surprised, then, to see either Raul Meireles or David Luiz find themselves in the book and walking a tightrope through the rest of the match. In the case of the Portuguese midfielder, that tightrope would continue into the next week should he collect a booking, as it would be Meireles’ ninth of the campaign and put him one away from a 2 match ban.

Andre Marriner

Looking down the table of referees, Marriner is not one that stands out at first glance. His 49 yellow cards puts him just sixth amongst his colleagues, and his three red cards again rank him just off the pace setters. However, factor in that the West Midlands whistler has taken charge of just 12 games this season, and he starts to look a more interesting prospect.

For his thirteenth top level outing this term, Marriner will be taking charge of the match between Wigan and Swansea– this pits the team who’ve committed the most fouls (Wigan with 335) against the team with the least (Swansea’s 216). When you also consider that Wigan have been involved in the highest number of penalty awards this term (14, six awarded and eight conceded), then a punt on current penalty taker Jordi Gomez, or his penalty saving specialist goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi, might be on the cards.

RVP - Van Persie has a little groin problem that we have to assess - so he is doubtful = check
Bale - "We will have to wait and see how he is (for the weekend). Hopefully he should be OK." - guess what doubtful again = check
Valencia - confirmed out = check
Dawson - Oh my god guess who is fit again after limping in the previous game. King, yeah right it is King so that means Dawson on the bench = check
Senderos - Well after half and year Jol decided that Hughes is his regular after all OMG, thanks Jol, great timing. Furthermore Hangelland recovered soooo.... = check
Sess - He missed the f...... flight or what, Late from friendly, come onnn, what are the odds = check

And I was planing to save the transfer, yeah right u r not gonna save nothing this year Daniel, just so annoying watching my team in a mess and all that after watching that embarrassing defeat from Luxemburgl. Ouch. Arhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Just fq it!!!

ok folks have been doing a wee bit of scouting to try and understand this bonus point malarkey. *Caution Long post coming*

Firstly in the build up to DGW I thought I'd start by looking at the Skrtel vs Enrique debate. Enrique has collected 8 BPs this season, Skrtel has collected 7, so there's very little difference there. But if we analyze when they get them. Enrique seems to pick up more of the lose BPs in very tight games and there seems to be no preference for home and away, whilst all of Skrtel's 7 have come in 3 games in which hes has scored or assisted, so Skrtel's BPs seem to depend on him contributing to a goal.

However, just to throw a spanner in the works GJ has accumulated 14 of the pesky things, despite contributing a single goal all season, and this may indicate that his forays forward and crosses help boost his PPI and get him on the BPs list more often. So, if you are looking for a Liverpool defender for DGW, it's really pot luck when it comes to BPs, but I'd suggest that if he's fit, GJ may well be worth a punt, especially if as some who watch Pool more than me suggest, Agger's absence limits Skrtel's forays forward.

The likes of Terry, Raylor, Baines, ShawX and Bos also feature highly (though most of Bos' came early in the season) But if you're looking for a sub 5.5 defender who picks up regular BAPs let me point you in the direction of James Collins, 11 of them without a goal or assist to his name.

If we move onto mids the place to start is at Sunderland, where FFS fave Sessengnon has picked up 14. This compares to 12 for his cheaper team-mate James McLean, in much less time as well. Sess has picked up BPs only in games in which he has been involved in the goals, McLean can also boast 3 in the win over City, despite not being involved in the goal. This may tell us that McLean drifts out of games much less than Sess which helps pick up those strays BPs. Just for Doos, Walters has collected 10 BPs in contrast to Ethers 12, and although Walters collected 2 in the draw vs United, Ethers seems more capable of collecting them even when he doesn't assist or score.

At the top of the standings we find on G. Bale unsurprisingly, on 21.We then find Silva and VdV on 18, wioth Nani on 16, Lamps on 15 and Arteta 😯 on 14.For those interested Valencia sits on 10, although, like in our other 2 comparisons, he is the guy more capable of picking up the stray 1s.

Finally we come to forwards. It is no surprise that we find some bloke called Van Persie sitting atop the standings on 30, with his closest rival, Demba Ba sitting on 24. 3rd in the list we find Manu 'I get BPs for doing naff all' Adebayor (also known as DAD or Die Adebayor Die). But here we have 2 interesting comparisons. Joint 4th we find Mssrs Aguero and Rooney on 20. But immediately below them on 17 and 15 respectively we find Dzeko and Hernandez. But we see that the 2 big hitters are far more capable of collecting those pesky stray BPs. In short, if Dzeko and Hernandez play there is every chance of them collecting something, but Rooney and Aguero offer greater security in their starting roles.

I hope some of this has proved useful to you.

Great post JK!! Really breaks down a big problem.

I'll look into Johnson (probably too expensive though and overall the points difference looks marginal), I've got McClean, and I really want Nani.

Still, while bonuses without goals or assists are useful, it just takes one goal or assist from a streaky player (and the accompany BPs) to wipe out all the odd BPs accumulated by the steady players.

FFS Europa League Matchday 1 review

    GROUP B

    Kobenhavn (Milanista) 63 – 46 Vorskla (transferaddict)
Where the game was won = After I highlighted how well behaved Mr. Addict had been lately, not taking a hit for 7 gameweeks, he cheekily returned to old ways and took a 4pt hit to get rid of Valencia and Dzeko for Siggy and Aguero(c). Good moves but considering the 17pt deficit in the final score there was little he could have done to win this match-up. Milanista missed out on a City clean sheet when Richards was ommited, but he didn’t mind as Shotton’s glorious 10 points came off his bench. Even if we discount that touch of fortune and the 4pt home advantage, Milanista still would have prevailed thanks to the man I highlighted as his key differential i.e. Juan Mata. He chipped in with 6pts to outscore transferaddict’s 2pts from Mc Clean who was the only discrepancy in both teams’ front 7.

    Hannover (Sarnab-Wazzagoal ) 46 – 56 Standard Liege (Duffman91)
Where the game was won = Duffman91 made a mockery of the 4pt home advantage Sarnab enjoyed in this game. With almost identical frontlines and midfields ultimately this came down to Duffman’s winning decision to captain Aguero while Sarnab put the armband on Demba Ba. Defensive points from Schwarzer and Kompany hammered Liege’s victory home meaning even if Richards had have turned out for Sarnab it would probably only have made the scoreline more respectable.

Thinking about it maybe we should see this unclear week as a big opportunity to catch someone unnoticed by everyone and make big moves in the rankings! Differentials have to start somewhere. And think about it, it is inevitable someone most people haven't heard of is going to score this week. You just have to make the move that looked obvious in hindsight!

Problem is many are saving FTs for Liverpool DGW. However I get what your saying, unfortunately I spent most of first half season trying to find the differentials before they became famous and left home.

2 FT's this week, planning on doing Sess and Sorenson to Pilkington and Schwarzer thus allowing me enough cash for Aguero to Rooney next week, yay or nay?

    Silva Bale Sinclair Siggy Sess
    Ba Aguero VanPersie
