Four sides from across the continent have now confirmed their place in the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League. Some had scares, some took it right until the very last kick and some just rubbed it in…

Spirited But Ultimately Hollow Victory For The Gunners

Arsenal fans would have been ecstatic on pretty much any other day, having so resolutely beaten reigning Serie A champions AC Milan 3-0 at the Emirates. The short shrift of the matter is that an equally strong -and most importantly, one goal superior- performance by the Italian side in the first leg, a stark contrast to their perfunctory showing on Tuesday night, can only leave a bitter taste in the mouth. Hot on the heels of their recent comebacks against Spurs and Liverpool, the Gunners will still surely be buoyed by this display but ultimately, their toils were unsuccessful, as the London outfit succumbed to a 4-3 aggregate defeat.

People across the “blogosphere” were noting the similarities between how the fixture was unfurling and a certain Champions League final comeback involving Liverpool -first goal a header, second from a Czech international and the third from a penalty situation- but in the end the omens proved to be nothing but unsurprising coincidences.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain impressed once again, playing while fighting a bout of the flu, by tracking back when needed but proving to be just as threatening at the sharp end of the pitch with an assist and a penalty won for his side. Tomas Rosicky continued his Lazarus-esque rise from the shadow of the man he used to be, while Robin Van Persie nonchalantly clocked up another goal as the Gunners threatened a great escape. Laurent Koscielny was the stand out Fantasy performer, returning 13 points for his owners, with a goal, a clean sheet and 9 recovered balls.

All bright points but, in the end, as far as our European Fantasy managers are concerned, it will now be a case of thank you and arrivederci. Milan have progressed and it will be their men on our radars for the Quarter-Finals later this month. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, priced at 9.5 and with a 10% ownership, and Thiago Silva, costing 6.2 and owned by 23%, are the two most popular options in Massimo Allegri’s squad to date.

APOEL Do Anything But Crumble

There is a team from Cyprus in the Champions League Quarter-Finals. There is a team from Cyprus in the Champions League Quarter-Finals.

We didn’t make a mistake by typing that twice, it just needed a little extra for it to really sink in.

Just making the knock-out stages was a mighty achievement for APOEL. To then top their group was beyond anyone’s, even their own, expectations. Now the dream continues as they have now knocked Lyon out of the Champions League after 210 minutes of action and an added round of pressure-laden penalties.

A spot in the last eight now beckons and, once again, this is exactly as FC APOEL deserved after a performance befitting of the task before them. Lyon aided the cause by most certainly failing to bring their “A” game to the party, but that is not to discount the hosts’ achievement.

One-nil down from the first leg, the Cypriots kept the clean sheet required and Gustavo Manduca hogged the headlines by not only grabbing the necessary goal to take the game into extra-time and penalties, but then picking up a second yellow card in the 115th minute, ruling himself out of the APOEL’s first leg tie.

Fantasy managers are now afforded a chance to pick up cut-price assets for the last eight. The likes of Nuno Morais (4.0) and Paulo Jorge (3.9) are budget-friendly backline options, while Constantinos Charalambides, at 4.0, is a midfield alternative for Manduca.

Benfica Back On Track

As we had alluded to in our Matchday Preview, Benfica weren’t exactly rolling on the crest of wave as they headed into the must-win match at home to Zenit St Petersburg on Tuesday night.

Form be damned. A 2-0 victory courtesy of defender Maxi Pereira and an injury time goal from substitute Nelson Oliveira has seen the Portuguese outfit waltz their way right through their Russian opponents without conceding a goal -something their coach had conceded was almost inevitable- as they overcame a 3-2 first leg deficit with relative ease.

Jorge Jesus’ men may have handed the advantage in the Liga to fierce rivals Porto a little under a week ago but in Europe, they have so far refused to back down. Now the likes of Nicolas Gaitain (6.4), Oscar Cardozo (7.5) and company will have the chance to solider on further as a nice mid-range investment opportunity for our budding European Fantasy managers.

Lionel Messi: Take A Bow

Barcelona won. Lionel Messi scored five times (a first since the European Cup became the Champions League). They’re great. He’s the greatest. The Quarter-Finals, and beyond, beckon. Not much more needs to be said.

We’ll elaborate though, anyway. With Barca 10 points behind Real Madrid in the race for La Liga, Pep Guardiola’s side look highly unlikely to retain their domestic title, suggesting their attempts to become the first side to win back-to-back Champions League finals is of greater importance than ever. Messi was absent from the weekend game against Gijon through suspension so had plenty of rest to be ready to take on Leverkusen. And take them on he did.

An incredible 22 point haul –or 44, for those who handed him the armband- means Messi is the runaway leader in the competition so far, with 74 points only 6 less than his tally for last season. Dani Alves grabbed an assist and, while costly for a defender at 7.9, is second overall for Barca, with 34 points. Xavi owners were left frustrated, though; with the game won early on, he was withdrawn on 54 minutes, for a mere 4 point haul. With the playmaker priced at 8.9, there’s perhaps better value to be found in 9.4 Cesc Fabregas, with the latter -afforded a role in the Barca front three yet again last night- returning a couple of assists in the 7-1 rout.

Podolski to Arsenal looks like it should be happening:

If Arsenal keep RVP in the Summer and make a couple more decent transfers, they could be a force next season.

    Morning all, couple of questions:

    1. Bench McClean (home to LIV) or Sigurdsson (home to MCI)?
    2. Captain Rooney or RVP?

      1. Tough call. I'd be inclined to play Mclean purely because MCY are so stingy.
      2. RVP. He's had more rest than Rooney will have had, Newcastle look very leaky away from home, plus he's RVP.

        2. RVP. He will be my captain even though I have Suarez and Rooney.

On my wildcard. Got the following preliminary team atm:

    —————Schwarzer – Ruddy——————-
    Enrique – BAE – Evans – Kelly – McAuley

    Bale – Dempsey – Siggy – McClean – Silva

    —————–RVP - Rooney - Suarez————

Do I need Silva? Got £0 in the bank. Should I:
    A: Keep as is

B: Silva+Ruddy—> Nani+ keep Vorm (got him for £4.0)/other GK

    C: Silva+McClean —> Nani+Pilkington/Morrison

D: Silva+Kelly —> Nani+Senderos/Simpson/Caulker
    E: Other

Yeah, I have not yet decided if I should go for McClean or Myaichi. Maybe Myaichi is a better punt. McClean is popular in my mini league, but none have Myaichi.

Do you think Sunderlands fixtures will be good defence wise, but bad attacking wise? Since you're argumenting for me to get Mignolet but not McClean?

Depends on your rank. Are you playing catch up or not? If you need to make up points than you can consider selling Siva, if not, than definitely don't sell him, he's been quite consistent week in week out. If you are behind in your mini league or whatever I would go with option B. I would also consider Valencia (once he's back) as he's cheaper than Nani and way more consistent, and free up some money for later transfers.

By the way, with the exception of McAuley and Ruddy our teams are identical. Out of curiosity who are you captaining this week??

Thansk a lot for the feedback!

I'm leading my mini cash league by 18 points. I did the same reasoning that I should keep Silva for the reason you mentioned. None in my league have their WC left, and all of them have Silva.

Yeah, I have kept an eye on Valencia and considered transfering him in, but I have to see if he will be rotated a lot or not. Maybe Dempsey or Silva to Valencia if one of them loses form and Valencia is playing a lot.

I really can't decide between RVP and Suarez. I think I will go for RVP because of the form he's in, the weak away form of Newcastle, and because buying Suarez is a big enough gamble as it is. What about you?

Which players do you have instead of McAuley and Ruddy?

cant help but feel that GJ is a great differential for the double, very few will bring him in with suarez, skrtel and enrique the most likely high transfers in from a pool perspective, whether he will bring home the bacon is another thing entirely tho, but well worth it imo for the buzz ud get if he comes in and does somat for ya 😛

First of all make sure you are logged in, otherwise it won't appear. Then click on their last gameweek. Scroll down and look on the bottom right, it will say something like this:

      Transfers & Finance

      Total transfers 36
      Gameweek transfers 3

This is mine, so you can see I've made three. Obviously depending on the transfers made the previous week you can then determine whether the amount of transfers is for a hit or not.

Just spotted this and couldn't help but correct you. He could've had 2 free transfers the week before and only used 1, hence carried forward 1 free to be used the current week.

So making 2 transfers the week after making 1 transfer doesn't necessarily mean a hit has been taken.

Evra was hardly going to be hugging Suarez like an old friend though was he.
He offered his hand, Suarez declined it, he pulled Suarez back - who could still have shaken his hand then - and he moved away again.
Johnson suggesting this is some well-thought out plan to make Suarez to look even worse is ludicrous.
I don't know what Kenny is feeding them.

I didn't expect them to shake hands anyway - Evra got racially abused by Suarez, and Suarez felt he didn't racially abuse Evra yet because of Evra's actions he got an 8 game ban and fines. It was probably the case before, but after that they obviously don't like each other and a staged shaking of hands before a game won't change that.

On a side note, I didn't realise that De Gea and Rio refused to shake Suarez's hand too.

Have you ever shaken hands with someone you hate? After many a bust up on the pitch myself I usually shake someone's hand at the end to clear the air, but it's always a half hearted one. Evra's attempt was a bit neither here or there, but Suarez clearly avoided his hand....to say otherwise is going against logic. Suarez even came out and said he apologised for what he did...eg: Accepting guilt for not shaking the hand.... People need to lay this issue to rest, Suarez was guilty on both accounts..accept it, move on.

Evra's attempt at a handshake differed from how he was with the previous Liverpool players. Suarez apologised under orders.

I'd say the blame is 50/50.

Evra put out his hand. Suarez refused to shake it. Evra, grabbed Suarez's hand, Suarez still refused to shake it..... 50 50 nonsense.

Fact: Suarez told Kenny prior to the game he was going to shake the hand.

          Fact: He refused to.

Afraid I disagree with you here. Evra did put his hand out, Suarez refused to shake and still refused after Evra pulled him up on it.

The reason they didn't shake was 100% due to Suarez, but I don't think they should be forced to shake hands anyway, so I don't see anything wrong with Suarez refusing to shake his hand.

I'd not say 100%. He was 100% to blame for what happened in the previous game, body language fro Evra was a major contributor to the handshake refusal.

Me in Evra's shoes: "I'll hold my hand by my side, but only for Suarez. If he attempts to shake hands I will, I'm not instigating."

Me in Suarez shoes: "He held his hand out for everyone before me, yet puts it by his side. Fine, I'm not instigating".
