Twice. That’s how many times –prior to today- that Robin Van Persie had failed to score or assist in an Arsenal win this season. Once at home, back in Gameweek 4 in a 1-0 win over Swansea, and once on the road, in a 2-1 triumph at Sunderland in Gameweek 25. With the Gunners on a six-match winning run coming into today’s game with Villa, confidence in the Dutchman was high; we’d handed him the armband in our droves, with 46% of all votes in the Captain Poll, double that of Wayne Rooney’s 23%.

Today’s 3-0 win at the Emirates extended the Gunners’ winning streak to seven games but it was the midfielders who stole the show; Mikel Arteta and Theo Walcott grabbed a goal apiece, while Alex Song provided a pair of assists.

There’s no doubt Van Persie’s blank – the first time since Gameweek 5 he has failed to score in back-to-back Gameweeks- hands the advantage firmly to Rooney this Monday evening. Those of us who have the United man, but failed to captain him, are now caught in a quandary as the champions take on travel-sick Fulham; willing Rooney to do well but, at the same time, not to run riot and rub our noses in it, with the rarity of an unreliant Robin perhaps proving pivotal in many a mini-league standing this week.

Swansea’s defeat at home to Everton also threw us a curveball, making a mockery of both form and fixture. With three clean sheets in a row, Brendan Rodgers’ backline was widely expected to produce defensive returns in this afternoon’s Liberty Stadium showdown. The Toffees spoiled our Fantasy plans, though, notching twice in an away for the first time since November; Leighton Baines netted for the first time this calendar year as the Swans’ wings were well and truly clipped.

Elsewhere, Wigan ruined the clean sheet hopes of Liverpool defenders in a shock 2-1 win at Anfield. With a single win in their last fourteen, Roberto Martinez’s side looked to have little chance of victory; Liverpool would surely bounce back from their midweek defeat at Loftus Road, right? Maybe the shock of Luis Suarez’s first home goal since Gameweek 15 stunned the hosts but yet another inept display from the Carling Cup winners saw them taste defeat for the fifth time in six. Daniel Agger’s return from a rib injury can’t come sooner for Kenny Dalgish.

In a weekend filled with the unexpected, then, it was left to Bolton to put a positive spin on the day’s events. Only this time last week, many of us had watched on as Fabrice Muamba lay motionless in the White Hart Lane turf after collapsing in the FA Cup clash with Spurs. Prior to kick-off, the club paid tribute to the midfielder’s remarkable, and continued, recovery over the last few days and, in an emotional match on Lancashire, the Trotters 2-1 derby win over Blackburn hauled them out of the relegation zone and proved a fitting end to what has been an extraordinary last seven days for everyone at the Reebok.

Should a player really get an assist for being fouled for a free-kick though? The scorer has to do an awful lot with the ball to make it a goal. The other player can even dive and get an assist for it. Seems a bit weak.

You could say the same for an 'ordinary' assist -- more so, even. A mundane pass can be converted by some brilliance and net an assist. The PK would never have happened if the fouled wasn't being dangerous/the defender stupid.

A dive should be punished by removal of all body hair and the offender dyed purple, though. Permanent dye.

Yeah I see your point. A simple square pass isn't exactly mindblowing. If the defender never commited the foul the player could have scored or played one of those mindblowing square balls for a goal.

Yeah increase the punishment for the dirty divers!

Never will under Olly, not his way

Still got our debate going in my head.

Is Clint really necessary with Theo, Bale and Siggy? Could get Ryo in to rotate with McClean and invest the money elsewhere, especially as Clint does not perform away.

This week - Young - Tho and Taiwo/Santon to Verm

GW32 Dempsey to Miyachi and and Yak to Chica

      Can then look at Santon?

I wouldn't bother with Verm. Still not sure if Skrtel to Verm is a 49er Fool's Gold Bagonwheel.

Keep Dempsey, get Chico and forget Ryo.

am not talking about losing Skrtel.

I see your point thought hits could be avoided

          Young to Theo this week

          Yak to Chica next

can then lose Santon. Would have 4.9 to spend. Thoughts on my best option. A WBA defender?

In a horrific echo of the Fabrice Muamba incident, Vigor Bovolenta, a 37-year-old Italian volleyball player who won a silver medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, has died today of a heart attack after he collapsed during a fourth-division match. He leaves behind a wife and four children.

FFS, that's freaking terrible. On the one hand, I wonder why he's still playing at 37. On the other, I'm 40 and was playing ultimate frisbie last Spring ... and often felt (but really never believed) that I would die while on-field [mucho out-of-shape ... hence: frisbie].

      Jeebus, that's terrible.

It's sad and that but you could read out any death from anywhere in the world. I would say oh that's sad too. I know its sad for his family etc but I don't get this mass sports star mourning. It does not really affect the everyday person's day to day lives.

have to say i agree with this, dont really think any death is any worse than anyone elses.....thort the whole diana thing and national out pouring of grief was pretty sick really for example

it really is quite harsh but you are born you live and unfortunately you die, sometimes too early but die nevertheless you do

Point taken, but it's the recent proliferation of heart complaints among sportsmen that's giving cause for concern. There's a growing problem of detection and prevention here.
