As we build towards Gameweek 31, our Watchlist rankings have enjoyed their usual weekly refresh and can now be viewed in the right sidebar.

This week is notable for movement in the Newcastle and Everton ranks – both providing key assets to accompany the heavyweights in our squad. While the Magpies’ back four takes a dent with the injury to Fabricio Coloccini, their attacking potential leaps with the form on display in the win at West Brom. Everton, meanwhile, appear to offer options at both ends of the field as a Fantasy mainstay, as a new arrival make claims for investment…

Goalkeepers

The goalkeeping position remains problematic with Michel Vorm holding the top spot by default – with little or no opposition emerging. The combination with second placed Asmir Begovic looks a good ploy, although the Stoke keeper potentially lost his Gameweek 34 fixture with Everton due to the Toffees’ FA Cup progress last night.

Brad Friedel is the most significant climber in our rankings – providing an alternative route to the Spurs back four for potential defensive returns. Again, Begovic works well in rotation here, although both currently miss Gameweek 34.

Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny and Everton’s Tim Howard are both mid-price climbers who afford a way into the Arsenal and Everton defences respectively, although there are arguably better alternatives available within either sides’ back fours.

Defenders

Jonny Evans has surely reached essential status, having returned his third consecutive clean sheet, in addition to a goal and assist in the last two Gameweeks.

In contrast to the value offered by Evans, Everton’s Leighton Baines is an expensive proposition but nonetheless an asset with form and the potential to fetch double figure returns. The Toffees’ defensive resolve has been proven in recent weeks with three clean sheets in six, while Baines’ goal at Swansea was his fourth of the season and offered a reminder as to his attacking worth. With around 7% ownership, Baines is a differential who could really make a “difference” should he fulfill potential over the forthcoming run of obliging fixtures.

Third placed Thomas Vermaelen sits in the same bracket as Baines – another costly defensive asset with attacking potential in his locker. One or both of these players will likely restrict investment elsewhere but the duo have the ability to return profit at either end of the field.

Lower down the rankings we see climbs for Stoke’s Andy Wilkinson, with the Potters now facing up to a decent run of fixtures over the next four Gameweeks. Chelsea’s Gary Cahill is another viable option who sneaks up the rankings, while Tottenham’s Benoit Assou-Ekotto has the fixtures to earn him renewed interest.

Swansea’s Steve Caulker takes a dip due to his absence from the weekend fixture with Spurs, while Newcastle’s defensive assets continue to slide. Danny Simpson is in decline, with question marks over Alan Pardew’s backline as the Magpies go into the home clash with Liverpool without the influence of the injured Coloccini. Ryan Taylor could return to balance defensive frailty with attacking potential – his start at the weekend is still uncertain, however.

Midfielders

Gareth Bale’s strike in Tottenham’s FA Cup win over Bolton provided a timely reminder of his goal threat. We keep the faith with the Welshman on top of our the midfield rankings, then – we’ll be breaking down the reasons why in a Members Monitor article later this week.

Antonio Valencia’s form, value and fixtures push him into second spot – the United man is starting to look irresistible as an option for the third United spot, with Evans and Wayne Rooney filling the other positions. Valencia’s all-round game make him favourite to start on the right flank away from home, with Ashley Young and Nani set to compete for starts on the opposite flank.

Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson has the fixtures to reward his recent spurt of investment, while Theo Walcott continues to show consistent returns at the Emirates, pushing him up to fourth in our rankings. Returns on the road could see the Arsenal man progress further.

Fulham’s Clint Dempsey has the home clash with Norwich this weekend and will be expected to return profit accordingly. Should he fail, then the likes of Yaya Toure and Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa are challenging hard for the fifth midfielder slot. Sunderland’s James McClean is another player enjoying a revival – his stock climbed with a goal and assist return in the win over QPR, although the fixture list is against McClean and his Sunderland team-mates.

Forwards

The top two pairing of Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney look rock solid as their form is maintained, with favourable fixtures to come. Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse is now sitting in the third striker spot, having notched his fifth goal in six starts with a brace at the Hawthorns. Cisse has the blank in Gameweek 34 and, with Chelsea’s progress in the Champions League looking a possibility, there’s every chance that Newcastle’s clash with the Blues will be forced into a double Gameweek slot. That will be a short-term concern, although a possible double Gameweek will surely see investment rocket, should progress to the semi-finals on April 17/18 be confirmed.

Emmanuel Adebayor is the other major contender for the third striker spot – while his streaky form is a worry, the forthcoming fixtures grant him every opportunity to add to his 11 goals and 12 assists tally, as Spurs look to revive their challenge for a third place finish. They also face a blank in Gameweek 34, although their league fixture at Bolton could easily slot into midweek and be restored.

Options below the top four in our rankings look more risky – Fulham’s Pavel Pogrebnyak has gone off the boil after an explosive start to his career at the Cottage, while West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie has stalled through recent injury. Both have decent short-term fixtures and remain viable as low-to-mid price options.

Everton’s Nikaca Jelavic is rapidly emerging as the most attractive alternative, however. His FA Cup goal at Sunderland was his third in Everton colours, providing more evidence that the Croatian has settled on Merseyside. With a modest price tag and obliging fixtures to come, Jelavic provides a tempting differential to sit alongside Rooney and Van Persie in our squads.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Suarez is so frustrating though. He was supposed to be a 2 week punt for his DGW, now looks like I'll be keeping him for 6 weeks.

REPOST as stuck on the end of the last one

Can’t decide on my line up/sub order this weekend. Any opinions?

    Bogdan
    Vermaelan, Richards, G Johnson
    Bale, Valencia, Siggy, Miyachi
    RVP (c), Rooney, Pogrebnyak

    Mata, Kelly, J Evans Krul

Feel like Siggy actually makes more sense than Mata.

G Johnson probably won’t even play, but if he were to I would fancy chances on attacking points.

Not convinced on Utd clean sheet at Blackburn (as a Utd fan).

CL Group C: Matchday 6 Preview

How time flies! We're into the final Matchday of the group stages. Group C has been the "group of surprises", if there ever was one. The lowest seeded manager, JoeySamSam in the group qualifies for the knock-outs and the highest seeded FergoDog, managing Manchester United is out of the CL. You gotta love head-to-head competitions.

For the record, here's how the group will be decided:
    1) Higher the points, higher the position.
    2) If 2 teams are tied on the same points, then it goes down to h2h record (win/loss)
    3) If the h2h record is the same, then it goes to Overall GD. If its still tied, then we go to away points scored in the matches between the tied teams.
    4) When 3 or more teams are tied on the same points, the Overall GD is taken into consideration.
    5) The group winner & runners-up qualify for the knock-outs and the 3rd spot qualifies for Round 2 of the Europa League.

Let's see how Group C is sized up before Matchday 6.

Otelul: Having qualified for the knock-outs, the equation for Otelul is straightforward. An away win against Benfica will see them qualify as group winner, a loss would see them qualify as runners-up.

Benfica: A massive favorite for the other qualification spot in the knock-outs. Why? For Benfica to miss out, Benfica needs to lose at home to Otelul by a large margin, Basel needs to defeat United at home by a large margin and in the process lose out on a superior goal difference of (42 + 29 = 71 points). In such a scenario, Benfica takes the Europa spot. A home win against Otelul will see them qualify as the group winner.

Basel: The odds are stacked against Basel to qualify for the knock-outs. For Basel to qualify, Benfica needs to lose at home to Otelul by a large margin, Basel needs to defeat United at home by a large margin and in the process lose out on a superior goal difference of (42 + 29 = 71 points). Unfortunately, Basel's inferior goal difference could also make the difference vs United. Anything less than a draw would see them crash out of Europe.

United: After 4 consecutive defeats in the tournament, a sweet recovery is on the cards. A win for United will see them secure the Europa spot. Anything less would eliminate the group favorite from Europe.

    Predictions:
Benfica vs Otelul - Very tough call with a similar line-up expected for this clash. Crucial clash could be Ba vs Suarez. Captain's pick and the home crowd's backing could play its part. Verdict - Narrow home win.

Basel vs United - Both teams have taken a hit already, so those transfers could make the difference. The tide seems to have turned in United's favor and I fancy that to produce a cheeky away win to secure a Europa spot for United.

If he's fit I'd do it most likely, considering his home form.
I was gonna get him myself but with Tevez coming along, Cisse providing a good 3rd striker option and Aguero/City's away form I opted against.

    Schwarzer Mignolet
    Verm Enrique Evans Simpson Caulker
    Bale Dempsey Valencia Siggy Miyaichi
    RVP Rooney Suarez

    a) Suarez - Ade (would probably mean Dempsey - Walcott next week)
    b) Suarez - Cisse (could do Miyaichi - Walcott next week and keep Dempsey)
    c) Save transfer - keep Suarez for the next 2/3 and leave 2 frees for the GW34 rescheduling

after watchin Everton yesterday i defo want verm over baines now.. reasons
    1. Baines is now Sharing corners and direct free kicks with Gibson.. and not to forget pienaar and drenthe when they play
    2. Rather than crosses and headed goals everton now play more direct football through jelavic.. means baines less involved
    3. When Everton get a clean sheet a 3.2 cheaper hibbert gets the same points.. which is frustratin..

ENR. Ba might be play as a lone forward against chelsea away (and possibly city at home?), but as we have no idea when that is, and chelsea are quite tight these days, it’s not really worth holding onto him for that. In the other games, you will see more of the toon trident!

If I had Ba, and no other pressing transfers this week, I would get rid. Mrs China Mag is getting rid (for RVP) But if I had to keep him for this week against a weakened Liverpool, it wouldn't be a problem at all.

I'm going to keep holding for one more, it may be an error, but I'd rather untangle my Liverpool defensive double-up than do what would in all probability be a distinctly crabby Ba to Cisse.

Oh, some more devious play, eh? All I ask is I'm given a fair chance. Stilicho's idea below of a third final on the final week sounds good to me. What ya say?

You don't seem to have any pressing problems tbh, seems reasonably to do something with Ba this week, but lord knows what, I'm still really stuck on that so I can't advise.

How about GW38 for the JPT final final final?

Personally I'm not 100% on Cisse, Jelavic, Suarez, anyone really, seems to me that Graham has the best fix for a cheap striker after this week but with Sig and Caulker already I don't know if I want to commit a third spot to Swansea.

Good point. Confirms my thought process as well. I've already made my transfer unfortunately. And gone against WC-ing this week.

Ba > Cisse not worth a hit sherly? Got Siggy as first sub too.

Definitely not worth a hit. Ba is fine for one more game. Need to be looking to make the switch when you don't have a more pressing transfer.

Ha. Very good point. Basically, he's fine enough to not take a hit for him. If you have a spare FT, get rid!

If you don't have any other transfers planned, I would do Crouch for a couple of games, then switch to Dave. But if you want to save cash, and save a transfer for the potential DGW then just get in Dave now.

both he and cisse dove forward for the same ball and ba missed by an inch an cisse scored
Then Ba all but created the next goal and fell when he would've surely converted and cisse scored..
        Plus Ba on penos
I think gettin rid of Ba for Cisse may be a bad idea.. even though on paper it seems temptin

For what its worth, I think Ba will score this weekend. But I would still get rid soon enough, even if he gets a couple. I would only keep him long term if Dave gets injured.

Crouch should be higher on the watchlist IMO. wig, WOL are great fixtures and his England record shows he loves to score against crap teams.

Should I wildcard this week or hold on for a bit?

    Krul, Mignolet
    Caulker, Simpson, Skrtel*, Kelly*, Evans
    Dempsey*, Valencia, Bale, Morrison*, Siggy
    Ba*, Rooney, RVP

Asterisk indicates players I am not happy with

WOW! We have 14/15 players similar. Senderos instead of Kelly.

I've gone Morrison > Walcott. And saving the WC for the DGWs. Think how lethal it could be with the possibility of a Tot, Che DGW in the same week 😉
