There’s nothing like a double gameweek to whet the appetite. This morning has brought confirmation of FOUR as the Premier League begins to whip the fixture list back into shape.

Liverpool were first to alert us. The Anfield club have this morning confirmed their home fixture with Fulham, originally due to take place in Gameweek 34, will now occur on May 1, affording both clubs a double gameweek 36 and, subsequently, a blank Gameweek 34.

It’s something of a surprise, with many expecting the fixture to simply be moved into the midweek slot for Gameweek 34 but, nevertheless, it now adds an intriguing twist to the end of the season and give Fantasy managers plenty to mull over.

Liverpool will now face (nor, FUL), while Martin Jol’s side have (eve, liv) on the agenda. While many will look to grab Anfield assets, with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez both producing the goods in the Reds’ previous double gameweek, Fulham’s prospects look comparatively bleak.

With just eight goals on the road this season, the Cottagers travel to two of the four tightest defences in the Premier League – hardly the most enticing of schedules for us to take advantage of. It leaves owners of Clint Dempsey in something of a quandary, then – Fulham have (CHE, blank, WIG, eve & liv) between Gameweeks 33-36. The home clash with Wigan in Gameweek 35 stands out but, with a derby against Chelsea and blank gameweek prior to the Latics clash, then the trips to Everton and Liverpool, there are plenty tactical decisions to be made as we plot to get the most out of our squads over the final hectic month.

Aston Villa were next to issue an update. The club’s official website have announced their game at home to Bolton, originally scheduled for Gameweek 32 but cancelled due to Fabrice Muamba’s collapse at Tottenham in the FA Cup, will now take place on Tuesday April 24, giving both clubs a double Gameweek 35.

Alex McLeish’s side now have back-to-back home matches (SUN, BOL) on their agenda, while the Trotters can look forward to (SWA, avl) in their bid to beat the drop. Right now, Bolton have a blank gameweek preceding this, with their home match against Spurs yet to be rescheduled, while Villa travel to Old Trafford prior to their couple of home fixtures.

Bolton have now confirmed their home match with Tottenham will be scheduled for Wednesday May 2, meaning both sides have a double Gameweek 36. Incredibly, this gives Owen Coyle’s side back-to-back double Gameweeks, with (sun, TOT) this time round, while Spurs face (BLA, bol), with plenty investment sure to come the London outfit’s way.

The likes of Ryo Miyaichi will surely see investment for the Trotters, while Gareth Bale, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Emmanuel Adebayor will be drafted in by many a Fantasy manager with such favourable fixtures for Harry Redknapp’s side.

Chelsea have also got in on the act. The Stamford Bridge outfit have rescheduled their home clash with Newcastle for Wednesday May 2,affording both clubs a double gameweek 36. With two home clashes, Chelsea (QPR, NEW) look primed for investment, with Juan Mata likely to lead the charge, while the Magpies have (wig, che) to consider, for the likes of Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba.

There is now one outstanding fixture as, of yet, unscheduled from Gameweek 34, then. As we explained in yesterday’s article, the remaining game is:

  • Stoke vs Everton

We’ll bring you more as we get it.

got 10 for gwk34 atm but not happy with 2 of them (holt, surman)

As do Howard and Bogdan, just need that Spurs game to fall in GW34, why do you think it's likely? If it doesn't I can make a transfer each week giving me 9 players. If it does then I'll have 11....just.

If you had 6.2m to spend on a defender who has a guaranteed fixture in gw34, then who would you go for? (Already have Evans). I have narrowed it down to Sagna and any City defender apart from Kompany. Would probably prefer a City player but rotation is a killer with them.

I'm looking to bring Sagna in myself next week, provided he does rise in price before Saturday's cut off as I only have 6.1 exactly.

Others I'm looking at Cahill and Jagielka/Distin but the last two dont have a fixture that week yet!

Yeah, I was thinking about going for Kompany(SUN, ars, WBA) over Baines(WBA, nor, SUN) and Vermaelen (qpr, MCI, wol), as his next 3 fixtures are qute similar to Baines fixtures. In addition, Man City had 3 clean sheets out of 3 in the last 3 games in which Kompany played.

    EXPENSIVE DEFENDERS

This gameweek, more than most others in recent memory, it seems most of us are manoeuvring our defensive holdings hoping to upgrade pawns at the back to more lucrative defenders available on FPL. It is understandable, especially if like myself you are in the midst of a “DGW hangover” and are lumbered with two expensive Liverpool defensive picks, or heaven forbid three of them. Who can blame us for kick-starting a mass exodus especially after suffering the ignominy of watching QPR put 3 past the floundering scousers followed by the concession of another 2 goals to Wigan at “Fortress Anfield”? 😯

Other factors also seem to be conspiring to encourage reinvestment at the back. Many managers are still banking the cash available from ditching expensive sleeping giants such as “Dormant” David Silva and Sergio “Where’dhego” Aguero. With the third striker conundrum continuing to prove problematic quite a few managers have resigned themselves (correctly IMO) to keeping the likes of Ba and Suarez until that particular picture becomes clearer. Furthermore the recent performances of bargain midfielders such as Siggy, Sess, McClean, Ryo, Ben Arfa, Yaya, Valencia etc means less money is needed in midfield and more can be spared for our backlines:

Thomas Vermaelen – qpr MCI wol WIG CHE sto NOR wba
Arsenal have amassed 10 clean sheets in their 30 games this season, of which Vermaelen has been present for 7 of them (8 if you include GW19’s 1-0 cleanie against QPR where he narrowly missed out having played 53 mins). To put it another way, in his 20 starts Arsenal have kept 8 clean sheets (40% of the time), without him that figure halves to 20% (2 in 10). 😎 Obviously another large part of his appeal is his 5 goals (2 of which came in the last 3 games). For me though, clean sheets are the “bread and butter” of your defensive selections, attacking returns are a rare, unpredictable but welcome bonus. If clean sheet appeal means nothing to you then why not go for David Wheater? 😛 When you remove clean sheet points from the equation Wheater (6.3) is actually in better form than Vermaelen (6.0), he’s scored two goals from defence too and is £2.5m cheaper. According to the members stats (forgive me FFS) in the past 4 gameweeks Vermaelen has had 4 attempts on goal whereas Wheater has had 6 attempts… I know, this suggestion is ridiculous isn’t it? But so are those claiming they want Vermaelen solely for his attacking threat.

Leighton Baines – WBA nor SUN sto mun FUL wol NEW
The biggest compliment you can pay Baines is that he’s second in the Defender rankings even though he plays for Everton who only have 8 clean sheets in their 30 games this season. Having played every minute of the campaign he was obviously present for all of them (27% of the time). He’s a proven FPL target, with 4 goals, 2 assists and obliging fixtures on the horizon he seems like a very decent pick… that is if you can stomach that price tag which leaves him 22nd overall in terms of value for a defender. It could be argued the spare money could be better spent elsewhere…

I’m not trying to suggest either of the above are bad picks, of course they are solid and potentially explosive picks (the case for Vermaelen being particularly water-tight). However just to break up the monotony what about the following alternatives…

Evra – bla QPR wig AVL EVE mci SWA sun
With that list of fixtures, and United claiming the highest number of clean sheets this season i.e. 15 (or 1 in every two games), what would likely be a double-up on the United defence shouldn’t be as readily ignored as it has been thus far. Evra was present for 14 of those clean sheets (all 15 if you include GW12’s 1-0 cleanie against Swansea where he narrowly missed out having played 50 mins). He does have a minor attacking edge with 5 assists this season and optimists may claim had his scuffed overhead kick been a few inches the other way the other night, he may have obtained a monster score this past gameweek. Yes most managers will have the United trio of Evans, Valencia and Rooney as the spine of their team for the run-in and to be honest that is a very attractive preposition. However, there is definitely a rationale for doubling-up especially if it leaves a midfield slot free for a potential game-changing differential like Walcott (8.2%) or VDV (5%). If you’re looking to make up deficits in your ML there is no point replicating your ML leader’s transfers unless you see them as absolute essentials (Rooney, RVP etc). If they go Verm and Valencia, why not consider going Evra and Walcott? If anything, for those contemplating Baines perhaps they should acknowledge that Evra is cheaper, in a better team, with better fixtures and contrary to popular belief in better (FPL) form than Baines…

Kompany - SUN ars WBA nor wol MUN new QPR
Man City have the ‘fewest goal conceded average’ of 0.73 per game. Debatably then they have the tightest defence in the league although their clean sheet total of 13 (more pertinent to us FPL managers) is actually second to United’s 15. In Kompany’s 23 league games for City they have kept 11 clean sheets (48% of the time) whereas in the 7 league games he has missed they have kept 2 clean sheets (29%). A figure like this compares favourably to Vermaelen’s 40% and especially Baines’ 27%. If you sort the FFS ticker by clean sheets for the rest of the season Man City are ranked 16th 😯 which perhaps explains why a lot has been made of Man City’s difficult run-in. Not enough has been made of the fact that they have 2 home games against SUN and WBA in the next 3 in addition to obliging away trips to Norwich and Wolves to follow. If ‘Bad K’ is successful in shaking off that niggling calf injury, as has been reported this week, then people may want to look to the security of City’s defence for the next 5 instead of the glamour of a Baines or Vermaelen where attacking returns may be required to make up for defensive deficiencies.

      Excellent post IT.

With funds being freed up like you said in the absence of a concrete 3rd striker and cheaper mids like Siggy and Tony V, it's made affording Baines easier to swallow than it normally would.

Bad K is massive for City's season and would be a welcome addition in our side again. You never know with a calf strain though and there is always a risk of injury recurrence if you come back too soon.

really good post.. must admit I'm waiting on Kompany news before I do anything. As you said clean sheets are the bread and butter of a defender and Vincent is a door step sized chunk of Hovis when it comes to them.

there is also the blank game 34 for many teams. This makes Vincent and Verm very attractive indeed.

My GW34 and GW36 teams presuming all 4 games get put into GW36 (requires one transfer hit):
      Mig
      Caulker, Evans, McCauley
      Sess, Sig, Walcott, Val
      RVP, Roo, Obem

      Vorm
      Kaboul*, Distin*, Enrique*
      Wal, Sess, Bale*, Ryo*
      RVP, Ade*, Suarez*
      * = DGWers
includes getting rid of Roo for GW36. Hoping league is over by then, if not bring Roo back in for GW37, finances permitting.

if ever an injury update highlighted what a miserable, facetious, smart-arsed sh*t dalglish has become:

Asked about Craig Bellamy, Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger, the Scot added: "They're better than they were but we don't play until Sunday. With a week you get a few people back you didn't have last week."

If the (as yet unverified) Mirror tweet about fixtures is true, the current state of play is:

      GW34
      ———
      Norwich v Man City
      Sunderland v Wolves
      Swansea v Blackburn
      West Brom v QPR
      Man Utd v Aston Villa
      Arsenal v Wigan

      (Still to be rearranged:
      Stoke City v Everton)

      GW35
      As before plus:
Bolton v Aston Villa (= DGW for both teams)

      GW36
      As before plus:
      Liverpool v Fulham
      Bolton v Spurs
      Chelsea v Newcastle
(= DGW for all 6 teams)

I'm in a similar position. Current plan is:

        No keeper.
Evans Verm Caulker(in for Senderos) Kompany(in for Enrique...maybe)
        Sigurdsson Valencia McClean
        RVP Rooney

That's 9 without hits...not sure who I'd take a hit for yet, but I'll probably take at least one for a midfielder and then leave the keeper I think as Bogdan will make it up to me.

        Richards Vermaelen Evans

I might just leave it at then, then I can get in 10 DGW'ers for 4 points

Our Barclays Premier League home game against Newcastle United has been rearranged for Wednesday, May 2 at 7.45pm.

Originally scheduled for FA Cup semi-final weekend, the game will now be our third-last league fixture of the season, following on from Queens Park Rangers at Stamford Bridge on April 29, and coming before our trip to Liverpool on May 6.

Potential Champions League semi-final dates are April 18 and 24.

ENR you said you thought Spurs would prefer gw36 and Bolton gw34 earlier but I did not see the reason for this?

If spurs go for gw 36 they play 5 games in 15 days should they make the fa cup final. This would surely hurt their chances of a top four place?

So if it is beneficial for Bolton to go for gw34 and Spurs then surely they will fix it for gw34??? *prays*
