A breathless day. City’s late salvo may have saved face but the 3-3 Etihad draw with Sunderland loosens their grip further, priming United to take advantage in Monday night’s Ewood encounter.

Fantasy managers will have a keen interest. For the second Gameweek running, Wayne Rooney will take to the field sporting the captaincy for some, needing just a single goal to outscore Robin Van Persie. Just like City’s faltering title aspirations, the Fantasy manager’s unshakable faith in the Arsenal skipper is beginning to waver.

Van Persie came away from a bitterly disappointing 2-1 defeat to relegation threatened QPR with just an assist. The Dutchman has now gone three league matches without a goal for the first time this season. By his standards, that’s a drought.

Clint Dempsey’s goal and assist return, with the woodwork denying him a further haul, acts as an immediate comparison from today’s action. Should Rooney fetch significant returns on Monday night, we could see a significant shift in favour away from Van Persie for the Gameweek 32 captaincy.

The scene was already set for such a move. Arsenal take on City at the Emirates – Rooney will face QPR at Old Trafford. On paper, that strongly favours the United man, although given today’s results, it’s clear that the formbook can almost be shredded at this stage of the season.

The Rooney vs Van Persie battle rumbles on against a backdrop of unpredictable results; it will likely run until Gameweek 38, breaking only for the double fixtures in Gameweek 36.

A ready-made differential with some potential for those chasing a mini-league deficit, we’ve yet to see Rooney capitalise on Van Persie’s recent slips. In his last four starts, Rooney has outscored Van Persie by a total of just four points – Gameweek 28 saw Rooney fetch 13 points to the Arsenal man’s 8 – the biggest swing since the captaincy battle kicked in. Monday night is a great opportunity for a bigger gap to open; for those who transferred their allegiances early to reap the rewards for such a risk.

After Monday’s modest showing against Fulham, another tepid display from Rooney will make things interesting going into next weekend. While Rooney will likely be favoured based on fixtures, it’s hard to imagine that Van Persie’s blip will be extended to four matches. Our confidence may have slipped further after today, but the call to take the armband from the imperious Dutchman is still one that demands nerves of steel.

Those protecting a lead would seem more likely to cling to the comfort that Van Persie brings – those chasing will surely look to Rooney to help them take advantage. It’s a delicious little scenario that keeps the Fantasy game interesting, even if City seem intent on making the Premier League title race a formality.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        team looks like this btw:

        vorm, mig
        verm, enrique, evans, simpson, kelly
        silva, bale, dempsey, valencia, siggy
        rvp, rooney, yak

i've got .4 in the bank. any other transfers i should consider? especially taking into account the dgw and the week with fewer games?

I was debating between RVP and Rooney. Had it on Rooney earlier in the week but switched a couple of days ago.

Dempsey(c) crossed my mind because of the 4 game rule but I didn't give it any proper thought.

Looks like I'm out of Europa

    Me: Krul, Bale
    Duffman: Raylor, Siggy, Cisse +7

Need Bale to clean up to win this but don't actually want that to happen since ML rival captained him. That leaves me needing transferaddict to beat Sarnab

    Addict: Williamson, Adebayor
    Sarnab: Simpson, Bale, Ba +2

if u have that much fund I say go for Ade--

Torres is a rotation risk with Drogba with UCL and FA cup games

It doesn't take much for a Torres bandwagon to start. It takes weeks of scoring for players like Bendy or Cisse before many people start talking about bringing them in. As soon as Torres delivers some points everyone wants him. I don't get it.

He does have previous stardom in his favour.

Personally I think he is a different player now, a harder worker more likely to get assists that goals.

because torres is one of those gifted players who you know should be tearing defenses apart week in week out, youre almost waiting for him to come out of hibernation and go on a run (tho he probably wont)
whereas bendy is a good player, nothin special, so you sort of fell like you need more evidence...

its all silly irrational psychology of course 😉

Every time this season that he's gone 3 gameweeks in a row without scoring he has scored in the 4th one. I predict Wigan at home GW35 is his next goal.

Not sure, he hasn't had a blank this season before. This will put the rule to the test! 🙂

Before todays games I tought I have to take a risk next gw (I'm chasing a lead) and bench RVP instead of Dempsey. Anyone thinking same after todays games?

+ need to take a risk, so this is one where I could gain some points
+ three games without a goal
    - rvp has done it before and he can do it against city too
    - three games without a goal....

I am not benching RVP when I have him..

and if Bendtner can score against CITY , u know Robin should wallop them and pack them in a box..

I was joking when I posted this but it would have worked out nicely (for this week anyway). His PPG is the 5th highest in the game and top for defenders.

    Team next week:

    Mignolet
    Cahill/Evans/Verm
    Valencia (vc)/McClean/Bale/Dempsey
    RVP/Rooney (c)/Graham

    Subs: Yaya; Simpson; Kelly

    May stick.

Possible moves: Kelly/Caulker or Yaya >Siggy, but don't know who to knock out from the middle. Dempsey's away form is crap but it doesn't feel right getting rid just yet. Yaya looks vulnerable. Thoughts?
