This week’s Digest focuses on a certain Argentine at City, the recent revival at the DW and the dilemma many Fantasy managers have up front, with the possibility of shedding one or perhaps even both of Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney from our Fantasy squads proving to be a hot topic on the boards.

The Player

His return to the City first-team may ultimately prove too late for the club’s title bid but, for Fantasy managers, Carlos Tevez still offers plenty potential. Roberto Mancini’s side have rediscovered their swagger since the Argentine’s installation up front, returning to the early-season attacking form that simply tore their opponents apart.

With Tevez working in tandem with Sergio Aguero, the Etihad side seem an altogether different animal from the one that stuttered and struggled so badly for goals over the past few months. Tevez’s work-rate and ability to drop deep and link up play affords Aguero the space to thrive – the pair’s on-pitch understanding is far superior to anything Aguero has struck up with Mario Balotelli or Edin Dzeko over the course of the season.

While Tevez stole the headlines in Saturday’s annihilation of Norwich with three goals, an assist and 19 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points for his afternoon’s work, the knock-on effect on Aguero has seen both players lead the charge for transfers-in this week, ahead of the trip to Wolves. Already, both have been acquired by more than 20,000 Fantasy managers.

The stats speak for themselves – while Tevez has picked up 26 points in his last two appearances, Aguero has now notched four goals and picked up two assists alongside his compatriot in Gameweeks 33-34. Given that Aguero had returned four goals and one assist between Gameweek 18-32, the stark comparison must have Mancini ruing that fateful evening in Munich way back in September.

The trip to Molineux is likely to see plenty more Fantasy managers scramble to get a piece of the action, despite a home game with United to follow in Gameweek 36. Although Mancini’s men are rank outsiders for the title and have ruled out by many, it’s fair to say that with Tevez on board, we can expect the unexpected.

The Team

Another great escape beckons for Roberto Martinez’s men. Only a few weeks ago, the Latics looked doomed. The fixture ticker was a sea of red; with their more testing run of games to follow, many had written Wigan off but last night’s win at the Emirates gave them their fourth triumph in the past five Gameweeks.

Liverpool, Stoke, United and now Arsenal have been put to the sword as Martinez engineers another scramble for survival. While their ascent up the table has been remarkable, the knock-on effect in Fantasy terms has been particularly damaging. Their 1-0 win over the league leaders in Gameweek 33 is the only goal United have conceded in the past seven Gameweeks; coming on the back of a 2-0 win over Stoke at the DW, this helped Wigan chalk up back-to-back home clean sheets for the first time this term.

Despite the visitors’ recent form, huge numbers of Fantasy managers handed Robin Van Persie the captain’s armband for last night’s match only for Jordi Gomez and Franco Di Santo to steal the Dutchman’s thunder. With Victor Moses playing a significant part over the last couple of months – the winger has now returned 37 points in the last seven Gameweeks – Martinez’s men clearly have the bit between their teeth and with their top-flight safety on the line, have proven to be a potent source of Fantasy points.

Certainly, their form will have many thinking twice over handing Clint Dempsey the armband ahead of this week’s trip to the Cottage now. With games against Blackburn and Wolves to see the season out, the cut-price potential on offer amongst Martinez’s troops could prove profitable over the final hurdle of the campaign.

The Talking Point

As double Gameweek 36 edges ever nearer, Fantasy managers are starting to shape their squads and assess the potential ahead. With Spurs, Newcastle and Everton all facing a couple of fixtures each, the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, Papiss Cisse and Nikica Jelavic are all set for significant investment, with the trio all expected to play a part in both their respective clubs’ pair of matches.

The shake-up in our forward lines has many even contemplating what was, perhaps, previously unthinkable; getting rid of Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney. Van Persie’s blank against Wigan last night took his recent tally to a single goal in the last six Gameweeks – with the Dutchman’s superb Fantasy season now tailing off in disappointing style, the decision to cash in and move on still looks risky, given he finishes the season with games against Norwich and West Brom.

For Rooney, up next is a home clash with Everton – a game he notoriously tends to struggle in. David Moyes seems to know just how to nullify Rooney’s attacking threat, with the Toffees likely to sit tight and give their former player little space to operate in. After that, it’s a trip to City in Gameweek 36 and, with eight other clubs afforded a pair of fixtures, the logic behind his transfer out is obvious, with many instead holding onto Antonio Valencia for United coverage. A home clash with Swansea in Gameweek 37 looks prosperous but, with a trip to Sunderland on the final day of the season, Rooney has, arguably, one strong fixture still to come.

Shipping out one or both would certainly free up plenty budget to plan elsewhere – the likes of Jelavic has dropped to as low as 5.8, for example – and would freshen up our squads, with so many forward lines looking a little too similar at the moment. With many a mini league still on the line, it’s a viable tactic, though, and one that could undoubtedly reap reward for those Fantasy managers bold enough to take a chance.

I think that people's heads are being turned by Tevez because he's the "new toy" in the box. Lets look at the facts

Aguero (this year so far): 21 goals, 8 assists, 189 pts from 2216 mins

    Tevez (2010/11): 21 goals, 6 assists, 185 pts from 2513 mins
    Tevez (2009/10): 23 goals, 7 assists, 210 pts from 2862 mins

    Just the facts

Interesting stats, but importantly, in previous seasons, City were getting gritty 1-0 wins, 1-1 draws, never scoring that many goals, playing with 3 DMs.

This season they're far more free flowing and, when in form, liable for big goal hauls.

The only evidence we really have to rely on in this case is games Tevez and Aguero have played together this season, and there's not much in it to choose between them.

If city score a few goals they will likely both be involved somehow

Tevez and Aguero as a combo are pretty effective. They get the best out of Silva too. City have rediscovered their early season mojo and will readily chase United to the flag. Expect a few more hauls between now and the end of the season...

Either one of Puyol or Piqué may not start though, and it seems impossible to know which one.

Alves is the only really safe option, but he's ludicrously expensive.

And with 3 at the back they still play wing backs, I'm not sure who else can play LWB

You really think Puyol or Pique are a risk. I have gotten the impression that its either Adriano or Mascherano for the big games and that the other 3 are nailed on.

    GW35: Rooney > Ade
    GW35: Walcott > Demps

    GW36: McClean > HBA

with a possible McAuley > Cahill or Verm > Baines waiting in the wings.

Liverpool have been playing a second choice defence for 6-7 games though, with Agger and Johnson they look better at the back.
Without Carra's freak mistake against Everton that would've been a cleanie, and I expect Carra to get dropped for Enrique/Kelly and Skrtel and Agger to get back in the centre.

The Skrtel Agger partnership is key to liverpool's defence, Agger particularly, hence there is a possibility of a few more cleanies before the end of the season.

Suarez has a bit of form, but could get rotated before the FA cup final, still a DGW option, Skrtel/Johnson in defence an option, no one else appeals.

    A. Aguero and benrafa
    B. Cisse and sessegnon

i know B have the better fixtures but id rather have aguero over sessegnon for 37 and 38... plus sunderland are looking deflated recently.

secondly.. bringing in either cisse or arfa will be for a hit so should i take the hit in 35 or 36... ben arfa in for sessegnon and cisse will be in for rooney

my FT is being used on bringing in ade.. for rooney in A and for aguero in B.. that is valid right?

I have already brought in VDV for Walcott this week. I still have 2 free transfers before next week's DGW. Already have: Krul, Baines, Dempsey & Suarez in addition to VDV. Considering BAE next week. Any other DGW players people suggest I should bring in? I have no problems taking hits.

Which Bolton midfielder do we think is the best bet for the double double? I'm looking to bring one in for Pilkington.

Miyachi - has potential, might not play all the games
Petrov - more likely to play all the games, but injury prone and lots of games could kill him
Eagles - risk of being benched, but bags points when he does play?
Mark Davies - should play all 4
Pratley - no idea if he'll play the games, but gets forward

    Opinions?

I wouldn't expect any of them to play all 4 games bar Davies but he's not the best for points, none of them are great to be honest, Petrov is probably the best option.

Bogdan, Wheater, Kaboul, Bale, Dempsey. There the 5 i have so far, plan on bringing in VDV, Jelavic and barfa in for a 4 point hit over the next 2 weeks. How does that sound?

Have a few worries though, first of all Spurs are in a bit of a slump so is it wise trebling up on them?
Would like Mata but worried there could be a bit of rotation, + i cant really afford him 🙂

guardian's five reasons to give chelsea hope:
    1-Torres is their chief tormentor
2-Messi has never scored against them
3-Barcelona have been beaten this season
4-Chelsea haven't lost in seven matches
    5-Get lucky

1-last goal against them was in 2005, back then messi was still a virgin
2-as if he's the only problem over there
3-duhhh but only twice away. the home legs were 4-0 and 8-0 so maybe chelsea should seek a draw at the bridge
    4- that was mourinho's chelsea...
5-that dsnt sound good, does it?

i guess.. in option B) i'd prob play the city striker.. alternatively i could do rooney to tevez(c) this week and then tevez to cisse.. gives me a strong startin 11 with 5 good DGWers too

well I won't be much help here as I still can't decide whether or not to get Tevez in. As it stands I have Bale, Dempsey, Santon and Cisse and will be getting Baines, that leaves me with 5. Am likely to switch Sess to a DGW mid (either VdV or Mata). So it's then a case of, do I keep Tevez or do I take an 8 pointer next week to ship him (and for who)

Sorry for what may be an obvious question, but since I started playing FPL in GW 27, I'm not sure...

If I play my wildcard before the DGW, do I get my current team value to spend on players, or back to 100?

Well I've been playing the ESPN EPL Fantasy game since GW1 in a league, and then I discovered this site, and the FPL game.

So I made an FPL team for fun to see how the rules are different and how they might change people's opinions/advice. 😉

Not playing MLS Fantasy, mainly just follow the EPL, but love my Portland Timbers! 🙂
