Leighton Baines has been ruled out for Everton this weekend. Mikel Arteta may be out for the season with an ankle problem, Cheick Tiote is expected to return for Newcastle, while Martin O’Neill hints at changes for Sunderland over the final few changes of the season:

Leighton Baines is out of this week’s trip to Old Trafford. Everton confirmed earlier today that the left-back will miss out after sustaining a hamstring problem towards the end of last Saturday’s FA Cup Semi-Final defeat to Liverpool. One of the most consistent starters in the Premier League, Baines played every minute for the Toffees last season and has missed just one match this time round – ironically, the Gameweek 33 match with Sunderland, as David Moyes chose to rest him ahead of the Wembley showdown.

While some local media reports suggest the left-back could be out for the season, the Toffees haven’t been quite so pessimistic with their prognosis but his absence at the weekend will significantly weaken their left flank – good news for owners of Antonio Valencia, then, with the flying winger likely to be up against Phil Neville. The news is a huge concern for Baines’ 7% of Fantasy owners ahead of the upcoming double Gameweek 36, with the left-back pencilled in by many ahead of clashes with Fulham and Stoke. Baines’ possible absence would boost Nikica Jelavic’s appeal further for Fantasy managers; the 5.8 price forward is likely to be the first-choice free-kick and penalty taker in his absence.

Reports suggest Mikel Arteta could be out for the season after picking up an ankle injury in Arsenal’s home defeat by Wigan on Monday night. The Spaniard was subbed off after just eight minutes of the Latics game, with Arsene Wenger admitting after the match the problem could be “very serious”. The Gunners are faced with something of a midfield headache ahead of this Saturday’s home clash against Chelsea – Yossi Benayoun is ineligible and Abou Diaby is short of match-fitness, meaning Aaron Ramsey is likely to cover in the middle, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain battling it out with Gervinho for a place on the left.

Cheick Tiote is expected to be available for Newcastle’s home clash with Stoke this weekend. The midfielder has returned to full training after overcoming the hamstring problem that has hampered his recent game time – his comeback is a timely boost as the Magpies push for a European place. Alan Pardew is sweating on the fitness of both James Perch and Danny Guthrie, though; the pair face late fitness tests to overcome thigh and calf problems respectively. Pardew also revealed Tim Krul missed training earlier today with a jarred back, but is expected to be fit in time for Saturday’s showdown.

Jermaine Pennant is a doubt for Stoke ahead of their trip to Tyneside. The winger has been struggling to shake off a flu bug picked up over the last few days – Fantasy owners of Ryan Shotton will be hoping the 4.0 priced defender is afforded further opportunity on the right flank in Pennant’s possible absence ahead of the double Gameweek 36 home clashes with Arsenal and Everton. Today’s news that Andy Wilkinson is available after a recent groin strain could further Shotton’s chances of a move to midfield; with the former offering coverage at right-back, Shotton could return to a role on the right wing.

David Luiz is out of Chelsea’s trip to Arsenal this weekend. The centre-half missed last night’s Champions League win over Barcelona, with Gary Cahill partnering John Terry after recovering from a minor foot problem. Roberto Di Matteo confirmed Luiz will miss the second leg of the Barca tie next midweek and, with doubts over his availability, Cahill could prove to be a strong short-term prospect, with the Blues facing three home games in the final three Gameweeks of the campaign.

Roberto Martinez revealed earlier this morning that Shaun Maloney could return for Wigan ahead of this weekend’s trip to Fulham. Maloney’s absence was hardly felt last Monday at Arsenal, though, as replacement Jordi Gomez returned a goal and assist in the 2-1 win – even if the Scot is available, Martinez clearly has a selection dilemma on his hands. Both Hugo Rodallega and Albert Crusat will miss out, though; the latter is likely to be sidelined for a fortnight with a calf problem picked up in training.

With Sunderland’s top-flight safety firmly secured, Martin O’Neill has admitted he is now looking to run the rule over his squad as he assesses his options ahead of next season. The Black Cats have been somewhat lacklustre in recent weeks, failing to score in each of their last three fixtures, and the Irishman revealed yesterday he is looking to freshen things up ahead over the last four games of the season:

For us to strengthen, of course, we would have to look at it. I wouldn’t mind some of the younger players who probably under match conditions, I maybe don’t know enough about- I would like to see them maybe get a little bit more match-time. How do you approach that with trying to get results at the same time? It’s a balancing act at the moment where I have got to just maybe look at the bigger picture.

Matt Jarvis is set for a return to the Wolves first XI this weekend as the midlands outfit square up to City. The winger dropped to the bench at Sunderland last time out and was afforded a half-hour sub role but Terry Connor revealed today it was just a precautionary measure, with the midlands outfit playing three games over the space of eight days.

Im not overly fussed on the Hibbert move as he has no goal or assit threat so you are soley relying on clean sheets alone.

So a big issure for GW36 will the the Chelsea defence selection Dilema. This will be even more of an issue now with Baines being out and there not being alot of other potential decent picks who have a DGW, bar Spurs.

So we obviously have Cech as an option who will play all the remaining games, but now a look at the other options, Terry, A.Cole & Cahill.

One main thing for people to consider, which I have been seeing no mention of is that its not just which defender will play both games in GW36 but also if they will play then two remaining games. This maybe less important for GW37 where Chelsea play Liverpool away but is very important for GW38 where Chelsea host Blackburn.

Because there is a big chance Luiz may be fit for GW36 and also certainly GW38 this makes me rule Cahill out. I know he is the cheap option and has a good goal threat BUT surely he has a low chance of playing all three games in GW36&38 considering that he will be playing the return leg in Barca and more than likely the FA Cup final (even if Luiz is fit will he be used in the FA Cup when coming back form injury?). Luiz will be a perfect option to use to rest Cahill (the QPR game if fit is my guess) and will also be in contention to play GW38.

Ashley Cole plays when fit and does not rotation issues but may have rest issues. Bertrand (or Bosingwa) could come in for him considering the high amount of fixtures he will play/will have played.

Terry will be needing a rest like the others BUT I think if Luiz is fit and able to play against QPR, he will but in place of Cahill rather than Terry. Even when Ivanovic is back from suspension it will be the Newcastle game he is back for and he will be needed at RB rather than CB against a team with Newcastle's threats so I dont think he will take playing time away from any of the CB's.

IMO Terry & A.Cole are the only two Chelsea defenders I would consider if I hoped to have them play both GW36 games and also the GW38 game. Im leaning towards Terry as he seem to soldier on no matter what and play all games and RDM may think that with Terry & Luiz/Cahill in the heart of defence against QPR that he can afford to play Bertrand along side them given QPR are the easiest opposition in the build up.

So although he is expensive, Terry is my pick from the bunch.

Id be interested to hear any thoughts on this analysis?

I feel the same, but captained him last night in UCL, I may rot in hell!

Surely Ivanovic will be a good option as he's back in 36 and will be reasonably fresh. Terry is nursing broken ribs don't forget.
Also I suppose there is always Essien who can cover CB and RB

Ivanovic is still suspended against QPR though so will definately not play both GW36 fixtures.

Unless injuries make it forced I can't see RDM playing anyone but Cahill/Terry/Luiz at CB.

Yeah I will be swapping Dempsey out in GW38 for Lampard or Mata. I don't want to take a hit in the final two weeks (GW37 tfr is Cisse to Aguero) so if I would only have a Chelsea defender for GW38 if I get one for GW36. And with being a Baines owner, Im likely to need to invest in one.

I'm certainly happy to keep Cahill for GW36 at the moment, I'll think of GW38 when I get to it.

He looks a rock at the moment and has a great chance of playing both in GW36.

If I get a Chelsea defender they will replace Baines so money is not an issue and im trying to look at it from a 'who is likely to play' perspective rather than just buying someone because I can afford them regardless of their game time.

Also remember their GW36(b) game is on a Wednesday and their GW37 game is on a Tuesday so only 2 days rest before and after the FA Cup final.
GW38 is on Sunday so they'll be relatively well rested by then, but their season might be over so their best XI mightn't be picked anyway.

Baines is the only everton defender who plays half the game in the oppositions half leaving the center half to come over to cover so if Neville if left back this weekend then that is where he will stay besides roaming all over the wing whipping in crosses.

Still cant get over yesterdays game
Ive watched every barca game for 2 years now and thats the best ive seen someone play against them
    Masterful tactics from RDM

But for me it wont be enough and Barca will go through the pitch is so much wider at Camp Nou so Chelsea wont be able to block all the space even with 11 behind the ball and Barca average 3.5 goals a game this season at home

Think it will be 3-1 to Barca

Very interesting to see the difference in media and fans response to the way Chelsea played. There was an outcry by Spanish media and Real fans when Jose used similar tactics against Barca

Agreed. Good point about the pitch being wider.

Last match was the best tactical display against Barca since Inter's 2010 CL 2nd leg 1-0 win under Mourinho. Controlled the centre and forced Barca to attack from the wings, which plays into Chelsea's hands as Chelsea are taller and better in the air.

There is always the risk of overconfidently predicting a Barca win, some might say like many did in the first leg. But I don't think there's any doubt it's mainly Barca's crap finishing that cost them the first leg, and the second will be even harder for Chelsea.

    BBC live text

1554: In-form forward Victor Moses has turned down a contract extension with Wigan Athletic.

The 21-year-old, who has one season remaining on his contract, has been a key player in the Latics' recent rise from the relegation zone.

His agent Tony Finnigan said: "The player has now decided, 'I don't want to extend my contract'. It doesn't mean he doesn't like his manager. 'Martinez is a tactical genius and an excellent coach', and they are Victor's words."

I think it might be a mistake to give up on the Wigan project now too. Martinez is slowly building a genuinely dangerous team and we've seen it deliver in recent weeks.

Moses is a great dribbler and will be useful on the wing but I agree he won't be attracting the attention of the very top clubs. Perhaps Everton might look to him as a Drenthe replacement? Optimistically, Chelsea under RDM have a newfound focus on the wings and perhaps he can be a Kalou/Malouda replacement?

    Question of preference here..

    Would you rather have

    a) Vermaelen, Simpson* and Caulker (or)

    b) Vermaelen, Simpson* and BAE*

    ...for the DGW?

If I get Aguero this week, option b) will cost an extra -4 points taking it to a 12PH but might be worth it. If I stick with Rooney this week, then option will only cost me a n 8PH

    Thoughts?

I think b is better, and consider its probably only an extra 2 point hit, as BAE plays twice

I'd also say B. I have Simpson as well but I'm not exactly overwhelmed by his clean sheet possibilities next week. Thinking Huth/Cashley/BAE as my other DGW defender.

Just to clarify for all those that must not watch Baines/Everton, with Baines being out at the weekend this does not give Valencia or any other Utd player a 'greater chance' of scoring points. Baines is not a bad defender but he is by no means very good and spends alot of time in midfield. His replacement G.Neville will make Everton more sturdy if anything.

The Baines talk is a crap defender is rubbish also. He's a fairly good defender who likes to bomb forward a lot.
I agree with you the net result of Baines being missing probably makes little difference to expected outcomes for Rooney/Valencia.

Like I said "Baines is not a bad defender" but him being out won't weaken the Everton defence. Not like it would if Kompany was injured and Savis was his replacement.

    Repost.

    Team is linked.

    Considering some crazy transfers:

Verm, Walcott & Graham –> Walker, Petrov, Aguero for -8 hit

Positiv – getting Aguero, Petrov has 2 DGWs and preparing for the DGW with Walker.
Negative – changing my DGW-plan, Bolton are shit, taking a hit

    Some feedback?

It's a choice out of the following:
    Cahill (QPR, NEWC)
    Huth (ARS, EVE)
    Jose Enrique (nor, FUL)
    Assou-Ekotto (BLA, bol)

    Mign, Vorm
    Clichy, Simpson, J Evans,
    Siggy, HBA, Dempsey, Walcott
    Cisse, RVP, Rooney

    subs; valencia, HBA, Turner

It seems like madness to leave Valencia on the bench especially with 3x Newcastle and 2x Arse on the field but Valencia’s recent form is perhaps the weakest, other than RVP!

Of course this doesn’t answer the question about bringing in Tevez/Aguero for RVP/Rooney!

I disagree. He'll be less of as prospect because at a better side he won't be relied on as much.

At Fulham he's their only consistant outlet, at a bigger club there'll be better players around him and he won't be as central to the teams core.

Good point acutally. Unless Livepool make a bid for him, in which case he will be one of the tops dogs.

I really rate Dempsey though and really hopes he gets a 'big move' TBH IMO I think only the two Manchester clubs & Spurs are teams that he couldn't improve. He could easily be a big player for the likes of Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool.
