[sbu_large_image] Scouting The Doubles

Newcastle approach the upcoming double Gameweek as the outstanding form side in the Premier League. With six back-to-back victories, Alan Pardew’s men have defied the doubters and are firmly in the running for the Champions League places with just four games of the domestic campaign remaining. The Magpies still have everything still to play for, then, and it’s little wonder they have been the subject of plenty Fantasy investment ahead of their pair of fixtures:

The Prospects

Up first for Pardew’s troops is a trip to Wigan on Saturday afternoon. Given their own impressive form, Roberto Martinez’s side are likely to pose the Magpies problems – recent wins over United, Liverpool and Arsenal attest to that. The Latics have picked up clean sheets in each of their last two at the DW but with Papiss Cisse, Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye all in outstanding recent form, confidence in the visitors will be sky high here, with Fantasy managers keen to get a piece of the action. Martinez’s men have also scored in each of their last eight fixtures, suggesting Newcastle’s run of five clean sheets in the last six will be firmly put to the test.

Pardew then takes his side to the Bridge for a crucial clash with Chelsea the following Wednesday. With an FA Cup Final against Liverpool just three days after this encounter, in addition to having a Champions League Final to consider, Roberto Di Matteo will have a selection dilemma on his hands as he looks to clinch some silverware and boost his own chances of landing the manager’s job on a full-time basis. Last week’s lineup at Arsenal already shows Di Matteo isn’t scared of resting and rotating – Newcastle will hold little fear going into this one. The Blues have been strong defensively at the Bridge since Andre Villas-Boas’ departure, though, returning two clean sheets in three but, with just three goals scored in those encounters with Stoke, Spurs and Wigan, hopes of an away clean sheet look justified.

The Likely Lads

With nine goals in his last six, including a brace in each of his last two away games, Papiss Cisse has already been the subject of plenty Fantasy interest this Gameweek. Over 33,000 managers have drafted in the league’s in-form forward, as the January signing continues to rack up the goals at an incredible speed. Cisse has averaged an outstanding 8.6 points per game since arriving on Tyneside from SC Freiburg, far superior to Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie, who have both managed 6.9 in comparison. Having played a part in 11 of his side’s last 13 goals, the Senegal strike sensation looks the most likely to do the damage ahead of the Magpies’ road trips.

The wing wizardry of Hatem Ben Arfa has played a pivotal role in Newcastle’s recent resurgence. Since establishing himself as a regular starter back in Gameweek 28, the Frenchman has excelled on the right of Pardew’s new 4-3-3 formation. Ben Arfa has produced three goals, four assists and six bonus points over those previous seven fixtures, averaging 7.4 points per game. Priced at just 6.1 and with an 8% ownership, his budget-friendly potential is obvious.

Yohan Cabaye is another player who has benefitted from a recent change of system. Cabaye excelled for French champions Lille last season in a 4-3-3 and was one of their most instrumental players as Rudi Garcia’s side snapped up the Ligue 1 title. Over the last three games, the 5.9 priced midfielder has come to the fore, with two goals, four assists and five bonus points – with Cheick Tiote back to anchor the central midfield three, Cabaye is likely to get plenty more chances to continue his recent rise in attacking returns as Pardew’s men go in search for that Champions League place.

At the back, those afore-mentioned five clean sheets in the last six will have Fantasy managers eyeing up the Magpies defensive assets. It’s worth noting, however, that four of those have come at home – Pardew’s side have just two clean sheets in their last six on the road. Nevertheless, the potential is there for points, with cut-price favourites such as Danny Simpson a stand-out. The 4.7 priced right-back has produced two assists and seven bonus points this season and has, so far, offered more attacking potential than any of the current back-four. Mike Williamson looks a more secure starter than Davide Santon – both are priced at a mere 4.2, while Tim Krul’s save points balance out his slightly higher cost of 5.0.

Cheeky Punt

Just a few months ago, the idea of Demba Ba finding himself in this category would have been absurd. The arrival of compatriot Cisse and the subsequent shift in formation, however, have been hugely detrimental to his worth as a Fantasy asset. Stationed on the left on a front three, Ba has cut a frustrated figure, returning a single assist in the last ten Gameweeks as his Fantasy price plummets from 8.1 down to 7.0. With spot-kick duties still in his locker, however, he may just come good over the next two fixtures.

    Depending on Luiz/Cahill injury news could it be worth a sneaky punt on Bosingwa?
    Will start vs. QPR in Ivanovic's absence and could well start vs. Newcastle injuries dependent.

      How confident are you for clean sheets though with Newcastle's form and QPR fighting for relegation and the fact they won't have a full strength defence.

    Everyone in the top ten has Dempsey and Siggy.
    Most have RVP, Rooney, Evans, Valencia, Simpson.
    About half have Bogdan and Petrov.

    None have VDV and few have Bale.

    Didn't notice any Everton either

    [Repost, sorry]

    If BAE is indeed injured, his replacement for me would be Jevans 🙁 Should I get a DGW defender in for yet another hit?

    I've taken two hits already but I don't think that matters - hits are evaluated on their own merits (the question is will player A score more than 4 more than player B)

      Thanks guys. One other consideration is that if he's injured I will then have 2 non-playing defenders for the rest of the season. But I guess I'll risk it.

      (I got Tierney in a while back when FPL said he would be back the next GW. Every GW it changed to the next GW until finally they decided he wasn't coming back).

      I didn't go for any DGW players this week as I thought it wasn't worth wasting a transfer for a DGW player this week.

    With Terry red carded I am giving serious thought towards bringing him in ahead of VDV. I was going to do Sess>VDV, however with my defence lacking any decent DGW options (Baines & Kelly!) and all these ongoing rumours coming out about Spurs I am leaning more towards avoiding spirs completely. Looking beyond Terry's moment of madness last night, from a ff standpoint I think his red card presents a real opportunity. He will want to make up for his 'error' and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he gets on the score sheet over the next 2.

    Is anyone bothering keeping Sess. I'm thinking Bolton might be a bit stretched so could be worth keeping for the weekend.

    If I get rid, it's for a hit (would be only one this week). I would only have £8.3 for a replacement and there's no one really shouting out.

    Pienaar, Maxi, Ramires, Meireles seem to be the only ones.

    Team is currently

    Krul*
    G Johnson*, Vermaelen, Caulker
    VDV (C)*, Bale*, Siggy, Sess
    Rooney, RVP, Jelavic*

    Valencia, Kelly*, J Evans, Bodgan*

          One thing on Pienaar is looking back his best seasons had 4goals, 4 assists or the other season had 3 goals and 8 assists.

          Is he getting in more of a forward role now for getting in the points?

        Forgot to put that in, I have no interest in Sess after this weekend, which is making me think the hit is even more "worth" it.

        Has the Pienaar arrest thing sorted itself now, seemed a bit of a storm in a teacup but hadn't heard anything else yet.

          True, especially if they carry on their league form and rotate due to the fa cup.

          I'm contemplating the Sess transfer aswell. Bolton (H) is as good as it gets, Sunderland have been poor but they looked threatening against Villa, and I just have a feeling Sess is due a goal, in which case the hit for Pienaar would be a fail unless he produces something special.

            In the exact mindset as me then for this one.

            Think I will ponder over it before making the decision.

            Pienaar home to Wolves the next game is enticing, although I already have Jelavic.

            The only reason I bloody have Sess is loads on here having him for Wolves and getting concenered he might go crazy (then also captaining him instead of 14point Siggy). Massive fail.

      Vorm,
      Turner, Kelly*, Caulker,
      Valencia, Dempsey*, Siggy, McClean,
      RVP, Cisse (C)*, Tevez.

      Vermaelen, Evans, Walcott. (3.9 in bank, 1 freebie)

      A) Walcott -> Bale/VDV, OR

      B) RVP -> Jelavic and keep Walcott??

      If I do B then I might have to keep Walcott for another week since next week is about getting Rooney back. Thoughts?

          A) As Walcott won't score due to injury, that's pretty much a guaranteed four points for VDV/Bale + if they do anything worthwhile.

          Krul
          Simpson - Kaboul* - McAuley/Caulker
          Dempsey - Siggy - VDV - Bale/Pienaar/HBA
          RVP - Rooney - Jelavic/Cisse

          1) McAuley or Caulker? May end up playing both if Kaboul doesn't recover.
          2) Bale, Pienaar or HBA for the last MF spot?
          3) The big one, Jelavic or Cisse?

          Can't see any other transfer(s) worth taking a hit for, agreed?

          choose:
          1 Kelly > Huth (if kelly is not fit)
          2 Sess > Pienaar
          3 Valencia > Mata/Pienaar

          Already have jelavic. All the above for a hit.

                Hmm, tough one. Think I'd stick and go with Pienaar, Stoke look weak and Sunderland seems to have gone into vacation mode already...

                    Houf, makes it even tougher as I think Chelsea will keep at least one clean sheet this gameweek. On the other hand, you'd probably want to get rid of Sess for the last two weeks anyways, unless you plan on having him as bench fodder.

          I might just do a 12 point hit for the lulz. Rivals are only 5 points ahead, so I won't lost much in the grand scheme of things (unless the hits are utter disasters)

          Aguero -> Jel
          Sess -> Pienaar
          Valencia -> VDV

          Losing Rooney this week is hard, if they lose to City they will need goals against Swansea & Sunderland. Should i have a way of getting him back or would Nani and Valencia cover the loss?

            Nani could be a decent cover, think Valencia suffers from him being on the pitch.

            Nani / Valencia / Young usually share the points. Rooney hogs them. I'd definitely keep an open route to get him back for 37 at least.
