We’re another week down the line and with the close of the season fast approaching, that ever-decisive choice only gets more important by the second, minute and hour. This week The Captain’s Poll will have the final double Gameweek to contend with…

In the safe zone we’ve got two men marked for consideration for Fantasy managers looking to hold firm and keep their rivals at bay.

Papiss Cisse has nine goals, 17 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points and two assists over the last six fixtures. It stands to reason that [at the time of writing] another 61,000 FPL managers have already thrown him into their squads and, ahead of a pair of fixtures against Wigan and Chelsea, make him prime candidate #1 for the Fantasy armband. A safe and secure option with heavy ownership and a hearty backing.

Hot off a brace at Old Trafford last Gameweek, Nikica Jelavic has risen from choice differential to prime candidate #2, having proven to the be the goalscorer Everton have long been waiting for. The Croatian has an astounding statistic that his last 27 goals since May 2011 (with Rangers and Everton) have all been one touch finishes. Put the ball in his path and he might just continue to add to that at home to Fulham and away at the Potteries.

Those Fantasy managers looking to lean a little left of centre and make up some ground on their mini-league rivals look set to rely on a stuttering Spurs. With fixtures against Blackburn and Bolton, there’s plenty of potential for goals -and many of them- but with a sharp drop in form from Harry Redknapp’s men, the likes of Gareth Bale and recent Watchlist candidate Rafael Van Der Vaart are clearly a gamble.

The Welshman provides an option closer to safety with a high ownership boosted by his own 57,000+ transfers in this Gameweek, while the Dutchman has looked the stronger threat in front of goal and is owned by just 6% of Fantasy managers, in comparison to Bale’s hefty 37%. Double figure returns are within reach for both Bale and Van der Vaart if Spurs can muster the form required to clamber back into the reckoning for a Champions League place. For those toying with a risk this week, these two appear to be the biggest temptations on offer.

However, there’s one player in particular with a strong record in these situations who has gathered just 6% of the votes in our Poll to date. Clint Dempsey has a history with double Gameweeks, and it’s a pretty outstanding one. The last three occasions that Fulham have had two fixtures for the price of one, Dempsey has bagged a brace in one of the two games. He’s not known as “Captain America” for nothing.

If Dempsey can maintain his record, then, those Fantasy managers looking to get that edge on their rivals could find themselves sitting pretty. A trip to Everton may not be so straightforward but the US international then faces Liverpool four days before their FA Cup Final at Wembley – possibly the perfect distraction to open the way for Dempsey to put them to the sword.

All strategies, undoubtedly, will rely on where Fantasy managers find themselves in their mini leagues. Those chasing a gap will perhaps “need” to take a risk in the hope of catching up be it Dempsey, a Spurs player or even those risks way off base (Fernando Torres anyone?). Those sitting pretty in their leagues will perhaps feel a punt is an unnecessary risk and instead cling to the comfort of Cisse or Jelavic, feeling far more assured in their recent outstanding form.

Our Captain Poll continues to run in the middle menu of the Homepage – cast your vote if you’ve yet to do so.

He'll play one but not two. Same with Mata. JT, Cech or Torres are the safest punts.

Sorry for the long post but I'm having a real defensive dilemma and would appreciate some thoughts. My current defence is:

Verm, Evans, Kolarov, Baines (inj), Shotton (rotation risk)

As you can see, I have an injured DGWer and one that might not start both anyway. I was going to bring in Terry and Huth for Baines and Shotton (-8) and play Verm, Terry, Huth but now I'm not sure. My thoughts are:

    1) Terry is definitely coming in. No indecision here.

    2) It seems like Shotton will definitely start tomorrow and could do midweek as well. With this in mind I should keep and play him right? Or is swapping him for Huth worth 4 points?

    3) Keeping Shotton leaves me with Terry, Shotton and Verm (-4). Do I bench Verm and get a DGWer in for Kolarov? If so, who? Walker and Hibbert come to mind.

Bear in mind I only need to take into consideration the DGW for the defenders I bring in. Evans and Verm can both play the last two GWs, as can Terry so I'm not concerned. As for the Kolarov problem, I'm comfortable keeping him until the end of the season as if City lose the title GW36 or 37 I think he could be great for GW38. I;m not sure about benching Verm this week. His recent scores have been excellent.

    So:

A - Terry, Huth, Verm (-8) Evans, Kolarov on bench
B - Terry, Shotton, Verm (-4) Evans, Kolarov on bench
C - Terry, Shotton, Walker/Hibbert/Huth/someone else (-8) Evans, Verm on bench

Normally I'd say don't take an 8 pt hit for 2 defs, but you've only got 1 nailed on def (Verm) - Evans isn't 100% atm, although I think he'll start.

As a Utd fan I'd be absolutely delighted if Kolarov started, but I doubt he will.

I'd go for C, I think, with Walker or Distin (I haven't decided which to get myself yet). But then maybe start Verm over Shotton?

Every time Torres scores and his next fixture is easy or in this case a DGW a bandwagon starts for the guy. There are loads of strikers in the game who would have to score consistently before we would notice them on this site but there always seems to be people desperate to punt on Torres. Its because of his past pedigree but I still don't get how so many get sucked in, he hasn't shown form for a long time now.

He could play both, but there is no guarantee at all that will be the case. Even if he does, he is more than likely to do nothing doubled.

Cahill to Terry and sessegnon to vdv for 8 point hit? Pretty much make or break to win the league, my rival has a pretty similar team to me, and he is 10 points ahead

    My current team:
    Krul, Vorm
    Evans, BAE, Caulker, McAuley, Turner
    Sigg, Valencia, McClean, Dempsey, Bale
    RVP, Aguero, Cisse

    Should I:
    A) Take out Aguero, BAE >Jelavic, Terry
    B) BAE, Turner > Terry and Hibbert/Huth

Your keepers have dodgy fixtures GW37-38 so I would probably go for it.

Would really appreciate some views on my WC team.

    Howard
    Verm / Terry / Simpson
Dempsey / Nani / Ben Arfa / VDV
    Cisse / Ade / Aguero

    (Vorm / Siggy / Caulker / Evans J)

There are so many options this week! I’m torn between having Aguero/Rooney, given the amount at stake in the derby, or RVP, who has arguably better fixtures until the end. Nani is a bit of a punt I guess, but he’s been looking lively. Would you make any changes? Thanks in advance!

I can see Terry leering racistly through the scout picks midfield at Cisse, and plotting to sleep with Van Der Vaart's wife

22 points behind the leader who's taken a 4 pt hit this week.. my team is
    Krul
    Vermaelen Caulker Turner
    Bale(c) Dempsey Siggy Barfa
    Rvp Rooney Adebayor
    Migs Valencia Kompany Evans
    A) Kompany to Walker (bench Turner)
    B) Kompany to Jagielka
Valencia to VDV(c) (-4) (Bench Rooney)
Apart from Barfa and Adebayor we literally have the same players so B would give a differential
