Later than usual, The Digest examines Newcastle’s unstoppable striker, Tottenham’s return to goalscoring form and the dilemma up front for Fantasy managers ahead of the penultimate Gameweek:

The Player

A pair of sublime finishes at the Bridge proved the weekend blank at Wigan was just a temporary blip. Papiss Cisse’s outstanding goalscoring record since joining Newcastle back in January shows little sign of letting up – last night, the former SC Freiburg man demonstrated he’s capable of producing world-class finishes as well as grabbing the occasional six-yard tap-in for Alan Pardew’s side.

With nine goals in his six appearances prior to the double Gameweek, Cisse was transferred in by over 90,000 Fantasy managers but failed to fire against the Latics, hitting the woodwork twice as his scoring streak came to an unexpected end. Up against a buoyant Chelsea side, many had expected him to struggle but last night’s double highlighted just what sort of player Pardew has acquired in the winter window.

A tally of 13 goals in 12 games, with maximum bonus points in six of his last eight appearances, Cisse’s confidence is sky-high right now and the scene is set for him to possibly have a major say in the destination of the title. City arrive at the Sports Direct Arena in desperate need of the three points prior to their Gameweek 38 home match with QPR – Roberto Mancini’s men have returned three clean sheets in their last four, but Cisse could well spoil their ambitions this Sunday. It’s by no means a straightforward fixture for the in-form forward and, with a trip to Goodison to follow, he could barely ask for a trickier end to the campaign – David Moyes’ side have seven clean sheets in their last eight at home. Only 9,000 Fantasy managers have snapped up his services so far but, with an average 8.4 points per game, plenty more will want a piece of the action prior to Saturday’s deadline.

The Team

Tottenham were hardly in the best of form prior to their double Gameweek. Harry Redknapp’s side had registered a single win in the previous nine Gameweeks but a pair of fixtures against relegation candidates Blackburn and Bolton proved the perfect platform to re-ignite their push for a fourth place finish.

A return to form saw Spurs rack up six goals over the Gameweek, with Rafael Van der Vaart the main protagonist. A goal against Blackburn means the Dutchman has now notched in each of his last three home starts, while a goal and assist contribution at the Reebok brought his score for the Gameweek to 22 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points. With Gareth Bale also weighing in with a trio of assists and Emmanuel Adebayor bagging a brace against the Trotters, the confidence is back and, with the Fantasy heavyweights amongst the north London outfit flourishing once again, their owners will be in confident mood heading into the final two Gameweeks.

Spurs now travel to Aston Villa – the midlands side have picked up just two points from their last four home matches and are falling flat in their battle to stave off the threat of relegation. Gameweek 38 then sees Fulham arrive at the Lane; the Cottagers will be boosted by their midweek win at Liverpool but Kenny Dalglish’s decision to rest and rotate proved the home side’s undoing. Three defeats in their last five road trips is more indicative of Fulham’s form and, with the likelihood of a win required to seal their spot in fourth, Spurs are certain to go all out to finish the season in style.

The Talking Point

With eight teams facing a pair of fixtures last time round, forward lines were shaken up and restructured ahead of the double Gameweek. A willingness to hop aboard the Nikica Jelavic and Papiss Cisse bandwagons saw Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney sacrificed by many – the Gunners skipper was shipped out by 84,000 Fantasy managers, while almost 32,000 rid themselves of the United man’s services.

Both, however, look strong captaincy favourites ahead of the weekend’s schedule. Van Persie now faces Norwich at home and, with the Canaries shipping 11 goals in their last three games, Paul Lambert’s side seem to have taken their foot off the gas now their top-flight safety is assured. Arsene Wenger’s men desperately need the points – a win for Chelsea in the Champions League Final against Bayern Munich would mean that only the top three qualify next season. The Gunners are currently in third but can afford no more slip-ups, with Spurs and Newcastle just a single point behind them.

Rooney welcomes Swansea to Old Trafford in United’s final home game of the season. Neck and neck with City in the race for the title, it could well come down to goal difference and, at present, United are eight goals worse off than their neighbours. All-out attack is likely, then, and a look at Rooney’s recent home stats suggests points are on the agenda; he has scored and picked up maximum bonus in each of his last three at Old Trafford – indeed, he has bagged a brace in four of his last six at home, such has been his consistency.

While both players face tricky away trips on the final Gameweek, with Van Persie at West Brom and Rooney at Sunderland, a switch to Sergio Aguero or Carlos Tevez is an easy move, with QPR rolling up to the Etihad. At present, almost 12,000 Fantasy managers have transferred in Van Persie, with 9,000 bringing in Rooney. With so much at stake for both players, entering the Gameweek with only one, or neither, in our starting line-ups this weekend looks a seriously risky move indeed.

    Vorm
    Williamson-Kompany-Verm (Caulker-Evans)
    VDV-Bale-Demps-Barfa (Siggy)
    RVP-Cisse-Jelly

    Going to do Cisse-> Rooney

    Should I get in:
    A) Walker/Spurs defender for a hit
    B) Siggy-> Moses for a hit and play him over Barfa
    C) Stick and just do Cisse-> Rooney, no hit

I think that Barfa could at least match Moses. I reckon wigan might struggle against a lesser team

Same thing, I don't quite trust Nani's PT. But if Hernandez plays and Rooney is deeper, I'd fancy Nani over Rooney.

I'm leaning towards Nani in instead of Rooney, but I'll wait till the last minute to decide.

Another way to look at it:

Cisse + Nani vs Rooney + Barfa.

The first is looking better to me at the moment given Cisse's form.

Unless of course, Newcastle beat or draw with Man City. The game is played before United - Swansea.

Also, the Wolves wingers had a field day against Swansea's 3-4-3. Though I doubt they'd use that formation away against United.

how essential is it to have rooney this week? planning to do aguero -> rooney and transfer out evans, but only 4.3 money left. not many options for that price range, except wigan's defender like figueroa and boyce and stoke's shotton. boyce is quite interesting though with his points 5,1,6,2,8,8 for the last 6 gw, especially when matches were against chelsea, liv, MU, arsenal and newcastle.

just get rooney. Avoid the 4pt for evans, by playing some other defender this week. Even if boyce get 6 pts, it's the same as 2 pts as you took a hit. The profit in hits usually is a long-term scenario. But as only 2 gw's are left, I doubt it's worth the risk.

morning all. just after a few reasoned opinions if there are any willing. i'm resolved to keep my front line of rvp, cisse and jelly and have no utd cover. i think my defense is passable for the weekend- vorm, terry, verm, turner. and my midfield all look good for fixtures minus barfa. for my free transfer this week i'm basically weighing up whether to go for nani or moses. i'm a little frightened about the prospect of no utd coverage with all this goal difference (but to be honest can see it being a close game given swansea's ability to retain possession).also there is the worry that nani wont get a start given his poor performance on monday. moses is on form, has the fixtures (at least on paper, wigan always frustrate with the fixture list) and has the motivation to try hard to keep the team up.

What are your opinions on this? Nani, Moses or is there another option i'm seeing past?

And plus what I mentioned above, if Man City do anything but beat Newcastle, United will be grinding out 1-0 wins and I wouldn't want to have too many United players.

The priority looks like it's to lose Ben Arfa and Sigurdsson.

Risk reward has a large span on this one. You risk Nani not playing, or playing like usual (sh*t). The reward is if United goes ballistic and Nani captain's that raiding party.

I've been trying to work out where I would be in the overall league, if it wasn't for my shocking start. (GW7 = 1,436,235, GW36 = 7,681). I would appreciate some feedback as to whether my method is fair.

In GW7, my mini league leader was in 17,761 (similar to where I am now). He had 439 points. If I add that to my score from GW8 - GW36 of 1,785 points, it would give me 2,224 points. Which would put me just inside the top 100!!! I guess that would make it worthwhile playing again next season!

I'm looking for a realistic assessment, so if you don't agree with my calculation, feel free to be cruel to be kind!

    Cheers

Have you tried using my above method? As you are above me, you might even get top 50!! What do you put your bad start down to? Mine was having no man utd players for their "horror" run at the start. I would do the same next year, BUT my main mistake was not recognizing rooney's form. I should have got him in against a weakened arsenal.

I have learned many lessons this seasons tbh, will smarten up next year. I think I am able to achieve a top 100 finish, if played smartly.

My one flaw is using my WC too early, make sure I don't next season!

YES, I am putting this huge burden on your shoulders China!! 🙂

I don't regret playing my wildcard when I did. It was for the big swing in fixtures (around GW12) and at the time I had a load of players injured or out of form.

I got 119 - 12 = 107pts this week, as opposed to around 150 for a lot of wildcarders, but I probably gained more from my wildcard, as I could set up my team nicely for a several weeks, rather than just the one big week. It was my wildcard that really started my climb up the table.

Yeah wildcarding in the first half of the season is preferable because it allows you to restructure your team and gain team value. My climb also started with my wildcard in GW 12.

Before that I was over 500k!

I'm not sure if there is a "preferable" time. When the season started, I was already planning a GW12 wildcard. But as the time approached, my team was looking more and more like what my wildcard team would be anyway. So I was going to save it, but then just before GW12, I got a load of injuries and players out of form so I had to go for it. The best time to use a wildcard, is when you NEED to use a wildcard. Otherwise it is a waste.

Chances are though you'll pick up injuries and need to regroup, and somewhere early/mid-season before or around Christmas is likely the best chance for you to do that.

It also allows you to identify the season's hot performers/bargains.

Vorm, Simpson, Evans, RVP, Silva etc.

My biggest mistake in 2011/12 was not Rvp(c) vs Blackburn.- 12pts net effect. That would have meant +- 1000-1200 ranking places higher at the moment.

Oh well, at least I did not captain BZ again in a fulham DGW like I did in 2010/11.

Yeah I feel quite a feel people had shocking starts though and recovered.

Chris McGurn is back in the top 10,000.

No way of knowing how you might have done if you had a better start. It probably would have had a spiral effect because if you had a good start, you'd have more team value, would have taken fewer hits, and may even have gotten you top 50.

Whatever the case though, the good players, the dedicated players, will always finish the season strongly though, and a top 10,000 place I feel is possible every season.

I'd love to know what my ranking would be if the season had started at GW11. Back then my ranking was a dismal 1.7 million, but I've since clawed it back to a more respectable 31K.
Just looking back at those first 10 weeks, my captain pick managed a total of 2 goals, no assists and one missed penalty. Mind you, the rest of the team didn't do much better.

I don't think it's fair to take the points of your mini league leader for the first 7 weeks.

Probably fairer to take your points from GW8 onwards and see where'd you be in the GW8 starter's league, then multiply it out to the full 2.8m players. But even this wouldn't be fair, cuz players who start in GW8 are not as serious as those who started in GW1, so you'd have to discount this.

And honestly, just dropping the first 7 GWs is very selective.

Yeah, I agree it's very selective but it just helps ease the pain of a low ranking.
I've just had a look at the world leader's points since GW11 and he's scored just 46 points more than me. Oh, if only ...

I don't think using the league from GW8 starters works, for the reason you say. Any serious player will begin from week 1.

In my method, its not really taking my mini league leaders points that counts. Its picking a fair points total for the first 7 weeks (in this case I would say that the points from the person in 17,000 spot is fair based on my current ranking - a bit low even). If I knew the points for the team in 10,000th spot in GW7 I would use that, as that is reckoned to be a fair average for anyone who uses this site.

I am dropping the first 7 weeks because I did terribly in that time!! I just want to see from a personal point of view, where I would be if the game had begun in GW8!

I think I see what you're saying. Consider that taking the points of someone in 17,000 spot in GW7 is somewhat optimistic. The first few GWs are always somewhat random, new coaches, new formations, etc. I'm not sure the average for the first 7 GWs of someone from this site was around 17,000. But very likely after 38 GWs, someone who uses this site would certainly be around that mark, after they've adapted to the new season.

Using the same method, I would take someone with points of around 100+ spot for my first seven gameweeks, but I actually think I was pretty lucky already. Next season I won't be surprised if I am around the 500,000 spot after GW7.

Good point. I think that the early season average on here would be pretty low (compared with now), as a lot of people played the fixtures and lost!!

But remember, that what I am trying to do, is see where I would be if the game started in GW8 NOT adjust my score for the first 7 weeks. So I think that the method still works.

But now you've confused me, i'm not sure anymore!! Ha

So I've decided on making just the 1 transfer this week so far.

    Vorm (Sorensen)
    Williamson-Kompany-Verm (Caulker-Evans)
    VDV-Bale-Demps-Barfa (Siggy)
    RVP-Rooney-Jelly

Still unsure on the Siggy/Barfa->Moses hit, still 50/50.

Question: If i keep as is, who would you bench in GW38? Siggy, Barfa or Dempsey? Leaning towards Demps atm.

    Morning lads!

Here's assessing the golden boot options this week.

    RVP
    Cons:
    1) RVP & Arsenal's form concerns me. Without Arteta & Walc, the quality/quantity of supply to RVP is reduced and we'll probably see him play much deeper than usual.
    2) Don't see Arsenal marauding Norwich. Probably a 2-0 or 2-1.
    Pros:
    1) He's very likely to be involved in every goal scored.
    2) Norwich are conceding loads of goals at home. Could we extrapolate their home record to away as well? They're probably likely to sit back, defend and attack on the counter.

    Rooney:
    Cons -
    1) With Welbeck out, only time will tell how the Pig links with Chica. However, recent history (wol & che) suggests he plays deeper and tends to assist the assist.
    2) If City don't get a result vs Newcastle, Fergie might be tempted to sit tight with 1-0 or 2-0.
    3) Swans are unpredictable in defence. They could turn up any day.
    4) Lot more outlets for goal scorers - Chica/Nani/Young/Val.

    Pros -
    1) If City win vs Newcastle, Rooney & co. will go for the kill. Rooney's monstrous home record suggests he'll benefit from it.
    2) Swans experimented with a 3 defenders formation in the last game and conceded 4 to Wolves. Should they continue to experiment, it could be goals galore at OT. Will Brendan Rodgers still stick to his experimentation?

    What's your verdict?

I reckon you're referring to captaincy ENR. I still back RVP to get the golden boot, however Rooney is just as likely to score similar to him this week imo, after that city loss.

interesting that you began with the cons before the pros. swans definately wont stick to the experimental formation away to utd.

Good spot. Thought the pros were more obvious, hence 😉

You think? I still haven't mustered faith in Moyes to captain an Everton player. 😕

Elnino I have the same frontline as you. I'm not so sure Rooney and RVP are THAT worth it. Nothing wrong with keeping Ade and Cisse imo

I would love to have both, because at least one of them is going to go big. But I have neither, and need to decide which one to get in (for tevez or dave). So i have a BIG problem in deciding between the two.

Sell Tevez out of the two, tough choice though. The easy solution might be to get both for a hit. However you might want Tevez for GW38 and Cisse should be good for the next two games regardless of the fixtures. Maybe just keep.

Forget defs at this time of year. Go for the big points. Front 3 look good although would rather have Jelface than Ade.

      Barfa->Valencia would be my choice.
