Just one result, but today’s outcome at the Emirates couldn’t have set up the season climax any better.

In many ways the 3-3 draw typified the season for Arsenal. Robin Van Persie again delivered – his brace of goals taking him to 30 this term – an outstanding return for a player who, for the first time, has enjoyed a Premier League season uninterrupted by injury. But, once again, the Dutchman’s efforts weren’t enough, as the Gunners slipped to a late equaliser and were left frustrated by another spirited Norwich display.

Arsenal now sit just two points ahead of Spurs and Newcastle in third – leaving the door ajar for the pursuing pair, making their meetings with Villa and City all the more crucial.

It’s beautifully poised. While those without Van Persie will have been perturbed by only his second double figure return in ten Gameweeks, the result does at least ensure that Spurs and Newcastle will go into Sunday’s games buoyed by the opportunity presented them. Those who placed their armband on the Dutchman will settle down tomorrow with the comfort of a twenty-point cushion. Those who looked to Wayne Rooney will at least have renewed hope that Newcastle will go at City, perhaps setting up a Old Trafford goal fest just a few hours later. Arsenal’s role in this scenario was perhaps a minor one, but their failure to earn a victory has undoubtedly added further incentive for Alan Pardew’s men, making City’s path to the title that little bit more treacherous.

It also ensures that the battle for third will go to the end. Regardless of how Spurs and Newcastle fare on Sunday, both will go into Gameweek 38 contesting for the precious Champions League places. The Gunners will need to win at West Brom, similarly Spurs and Newcastle will have extra motivation to earn three points against Fulham and Everton respectively.

For Fantasy managers, that’s a dream scenario. With our squads full of assets from both clubs following the double Gameweek, we can now be content that the likes of Gareth Bale, Rafael Van der Vaart and Papiss Cisse will be fully motivated to the final whistle.

Then there’s Van Persie. He’ll go to the Hawthorns looking to push his side over the line – one last effort from a player who has undoubtedly emerged as this season’s star asset. Once done, we’re then reliant on Arsene Wenger’s ability to retain his services.

Arsenal’s failings ensured that our season went to the last – we can only wonder if they’ll also bring an end to Van Persie’s career at the Emirates.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Forget the whole game FFS, the last 25-30 minutes summed it for me.

Down by one Arsenal pouring on the pressure against a team parking the bus in the penalty spot until finally after a dozen or so plays of the goalkeeper doing his best volleyball-like defense RVP gets a goal. And then one more to seemingly win it. But with all things Arsenal, what it seems is rarely what it comes to be. Gibbs apparently forgot that the full title of his position is wing-back and not wing, as in get back before Morison gets a fairly easy shot on goal. Pathetic. We could lose have just lost the CL spot due to an average team after thrashing teams like Man City, Tottenham, Chelsea and AC Milan?

Lucky? Goalkeeper was brilliant? We could have won the first leg by 5 or 6. You only did well for the 1st half of the second leg then we woke up. Abbiati made a great stop in the 2nd leg (and one in the 1st leg) but you are forgetting things like Nocerino missing an open goal.

I'm not wearing Arsenal-tinted glasses, just look at my original post. Playing what if with the scoreline is amateurish commentary. Arsenal "could have" tied it "if" Van persie just flicked it a little higher or abiatti reacted just a little later. Just because AC Milan "woke up" doesn't change anything, didn't change the score. As to the comment about UEFA seeing it differently, I mean that because of the two leg system, previous wins are watered down and I don't think they should be. Players play too much as it is.

Going back to your original post it is typical of Arsenal to get decent wins against top sides and blow it against average teams. This has been the case for years now.

This supposed lack of mental fortitude is bullshit. Most of Arsenal's perceived bad spirit is the result of injury crisis. At one point this season Arsenal were without a recognized left back, a recognized right back, and only one centerback (miquel) as a substitute. There is a direct correlation between Arsenal's performance and how many injuries they have. That isn't an excuse btw, its a more damning judgement as that problem is far easier to fix.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you started today without 3 of your first choice players (Walcott, Wilshire and Arteta) and apart from that you didn't have anyone of importance unavailable (just Diaby I think). While not ideal that is not an injury crisis and you drew today. Yes you've had worse injury problems this season and it's done damage.

I didn't say they were invincible, again, look at the earlier post. The way the arsenal uses their defenders is very, very aggressive, but that was the cause of their draw, and this is the key part, for today's game. I am simply saying that if you want to talk about the causes of poor performance over a timespan of years then injuries are the real culprit.

Moreover, it really kills me to see players on that team i thought symbolize the mental fortitude and resolve to win. Did anyone else see Rosciky block a Norwich clearance, granted it worked out for Arsenal in the end, because he was walking back with his back turned after flapping his arms in frustration and ended up getting hit. Rosicky is so much better than that...

Chelsea 5-3 when Oct 29, 2011. Man City 1-0 but the possession was 65% Arsenal and Man City did not even have a shot on target. Those are the kind of stats you would expect from Blackburn recently.

    Evans, Verm, Jags

    Dempsey, VdV, Nani, Maloney

    Aguero (c), Jelly, RvP

I wouldn't begrudge Cisse a couple of goals tomorrow even if I did transfer him out for RVP - as long as City lose...a draw would me mildly acceptable. Hope he does well for you..

For Rooney and Rvp owners looking to get aguero in for gwk38.

      I agree 100% with this.

Not that it matters, I don't have Rooney, so I'm ditching Cisse.

Only dilemma I have is what to do with Mr. Dempsey. Can afford any mid.

A - Kelly is only good for one game, lescot for two
B - with chichirito almost surely playing roonpig will play less forward
C - likely to bring aguero in for the last game anyway, makes it easier to press the button when it's chichi

I don't think it will be given.
Looked like an Arsenal player (Rosicky?) was making the pass in the opposite direction, i.e. backwards, the ball hit the defender outside of the penalty box and bounced off to RvP who was in the box. Since the defender 'altered the intended destination of the ball' 'outside of the penalty area', no assist should be given.

With two matches to go, which Chelsea or Liverpool players would people have in their team? Im playing the Teleg game so can get them in for Tuesdays points - but are those games just going to fizzle out. Torres could want to get one back on his old club or Liverpool may be out for revenge and theyve still got the incentive of finishing above Everton or will they be down and out after today. Any thoughts much appreciated

Chelsea could still rotate/rest players, but Terry and Ivanovic are both good picks for gw38.

I think much depends on how Tott and Newcastle play. If both win than Chelsea have no chance at 4th and they will rest key players. So I would bet on Liverpool to win.
