[sbu_large_image] Season Review

When Man City captured a 22-year-old Vincent Kompany from Hamburg for a fee of £6 million in 2008, they knew they had themselves a bargain. Ironically, Kompany went into the 2011/12 season costing a similar amount, with Fantasy managers quick to target his 6.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag as a source of value. Having been classified as a midfielder in the 2010/11 campaign, Kompany was now listed in defence and, while the likes of Shay Given and Luis Suarez failed to live up to their pre-season hype as Fantasy bargains, the City man certainly delivered.

Kompany finished the campaign behind only Patrice Evra in the defender rankings, despite being limited to 31 league starts, compared to the United man’s 37. The Belgian’s inspirational performances skippering City were akin to Steven Gerrard’s showings for Liverpool at his peak: Kompany dragged City to the title, adding determined steel to a back four that notched four clean sheets in the final six matches. His goal in the 1-0 victory over United that gave City the advantage over the final two matches proved to be decisive, epitomising Kompany’s importance to City’s cause.

The Statistics

With 15 clean sheets gathered, three goals and two assists, Kompany trailed Evra by just 14 points atop the FPL defender rankings. For a player who recorded 31 starts, Kompany averaged 4.7 points per game in the FPL – a total only bettered by defenders gaining a handful of appearances.

A hugely popular pick from the very start of the season, by Gameweek 10 Kompany’s price had risen to 6.3, reaching 6.6 by Gameweek 24 as the investment continued. Several mid-season absences with a three-match ban, along with knee and calf injuries, derailed his popularity temporarily but, by the campaign’s climax, Kompany’s price had risen to 7.0. Significantly, City kept just two clean sheets over the seven games without their skipper in the defence.

The Prospects

Kompany will pose a problem for Fantasy managers next term. There’s no question that he’ll suffer a price rise which will likely see him share a bracket with heavyweight defensive assets Thomas Vermaelen, Nemanja Vidic and Leighton Baines of around 7.5. Even so, as an obvious source of 15+ clean sheets over the season, the City backline is set to be coveted.

Kompany’s inflated price tag will have Fantasy managers eyeing up the likes of Gael Clichy and perhaps Micah Richards once more: assets that are set to be remain prone to rotation. Joe Hart will also emerge as a stronger option as a result of Kompany’s price rise. Hart will offer almost 100% security in the City rearguard, whilst his price is likely to be lower than Kompany’s, remaining at the 7.0 mark once again.

For the City skipper to stand out as the key source of points in their defence, he’ll need to better his 31 starts and three goals earned this term. That should be achievable, although the lure from Vermaelen and Baines as genuine sources of attacking points may still see him relegated in the ranks of popularity.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Euro -

Anyone getting any Spain coverage for gwk 1.

Currently only have a defender - Alba

I have a big sneijder shaped space in midfield for Iniesta, but my woman's intuition is telling me that Sneijder and Robben may get me more points.

At the moment I have all 3 (Robben/Iniesta/Wesley) Depends if Villa/LOLrenthe plays I suppose.

Iniesta will be the standard (C) I suppose, but not so sure Italy will be easy. Might Drop Iniesta and (c)a diffenerential in stead.

It's a very good point about Hart, it'll be difficult to justify Kompany over Vermaelen or Baines in that bracket - both do about 3 times as well in attacking terms, difficult to see Lescott coming in much cheaper and he isn't a certainty to play, I wonder if we'll see a retreat from the cheapie-rotator trend next year if Hart's a sensible price. Probably not, but it's perhaps going to be hard to get value out of City's defence any other way.

I think there will always be value gks over the likes of Hart/Cech/De Gea purely because of save points. suprise tight defences and lack of bonus in general.

My main gks since playing this have been James, Schwarzer, Hart (bham), Foster, sorenson, Vorm...much prefer to spend the money on one expensive defender like Baines or Verm, who can score, assist, pick up bonus and get a clean sheet.

I can see myself going for the rotators in goal as well, but perhaps two fairly expensive defs next year, I think I squeezed my defence a bit too hard this year and I only started salvaging my season when I reserved a bit more cash back there. However, I'm not sure Kompany at 7/7.5 will represent good enough value, and it remains to be seen whether there'll be as many fruitful cheapand mid price midfield options next year.

the problem this year was there were lots of good cheap ones (simpson/caulker) lots of good expensive ones (Kompany by the end/Verm) but not much in the 5m bracket outside of Spurs's full backs and they didn't stay that way for long.

Stoke, Fulham and others largely underachieved defensively.

I think Stoke without Euro commitments and Fulham could be a better source this year. QPR as well could be more settled and Sunderland too with the same manager all season will be better defensively.

Can definitely see something like this next season

          gk - two cheap rotators
one expensive defender (man city/chelsea/man utd)- 2 x 5m ones, 2x 4-4.5m. That would come to about 25-26m, which is a good spread for defense I think.

I think the reluctance to adopt that tactic is partly down to people not wanting to 'waste' transfers on goalkeepers. If Man City hit a tough run of fixtures and Arsenal have an easy run Kompany>Vermaelen is an easy jump, Hart>Szczezny(sp?) is not going to happen. It's the feeling of being trapped by the price tag of your 'keeper.

Not saying this is the right way to think, just suspect it happens.

Yea I think this is a good point, also you only get save points from your keepers, so it can feel a bit wasteful to pay more for a keeper with less to do.

Shame, was an interesting little feature.

If any scouts are making contact with the FPL anytime soon, would be good if you could ask if they intend to bring it back. I know Mark/Granny always used to asses the League of Leagues rank on the podcasts.

Not sure. He had a lot of 1 pointers off the bench, probably played in about as many games as Kompany and Raylor was lower in overall score. I guess about 4 PPG. Nothing compared to Mr PPG himself, the super Serb.

REPOST: Last post on last post....

Anyone considering a triple double up on defences for the Euro’s?

It is a tactic I am considering.

Across 3 different days of course.

List of possibles include: Greece, Russia, Poland, Sweden, Croatia, Czech, EIRE

King Nil Miss pointed out that there are attacking options in some of these which is a good point, and may mean it wont be too attractive an option.

I have to take a minimum of a -4 to get 11 players as Alaba, Ivanovic and Badstuber were all in my team and now suspended.

      I'm going for:

      Neuer
      Cahill, Bosingwa, Contento
      Ribery, Robben, Lampard, Mikel
      Drogba, Torres, Gomez

And might take another -2 to do Mikel to Mata, considering Mueller over Torres.

I like your team, and for less hits than mine 😉

"Kompany’s inflated price tag will have Fantasy managers eyeing up the likes of Gael Clichy and perhaps Micah Richards once more: assets that are set to be remain prone to rotation. Joe Hart will also emerge as a stronger option..."

Why is Lescott so often overlooked? City defender, almost certain to start when fit and scores every now and then. Very good pick for my team this season!

Yeah exactly...I think it's likely they'll recruit another CB - Savic didn't look ready on his showings this season and if they're going for Champions League, I think he'll likely get another experienced CB in. If not, then true enough, Lescott is a good option.

Well I finally faced looking at my FPL page, having failed to catch my ML leader on the last day.

I came second in my main ML (the one with my friends)

I won both my public leagues, and came second (out in the semi final) in my public H2H

    And, i finished 156,454 with 2,005 points

How did you guys all do in your first season?

59, 905 rank. Difficult to compare points as the averages vary so much each year. That rank was with only 1,938 points.

If you keep hits to a minimum keep track of injuries and form, follow fixtures and prepare well for double gameweeks you should be top 50,000 at least next season.

The rest is down to luck and captain decisions.

Thats what I'm hoping! I thought my rank was dead good (when it was about 300,000) - untill I started reading posts on here.

Looking back over the year I made some dumb decisions with some poor planning, so I'm pretty confident of an improved rank next year 🙂

I took plenty of hits pre Xmas, took a view that the more money i could earn early in the season the more advantage i would have later on, I reckon it worked out fairly well. Kinda got addicted to FISO!

Ended up with 61 transfer throughout the season.

Think next year i'll do the same, dont mind 4pt hits to jump on bandwagons early doors.

Not sure thats what the experts will tell you to do, but worked ok for me.

              True.

But, gotta admit it is hard to hold your WC. I tried to make my early transfers with the mentality that I had no WC left. When you start making punts, then triggering WC tempts you the following week.

By about 2002 he was more interested in horses than football anyway.
If he had a choice between
      (a) winning the World Cup, the European Championships, the CL and World Cup Golden Boot
      (b) owning the horses than won the Derby, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, The Grand National and the 2000 guineas
      I'm sure he'd pick (b)

Anyone else considering Cahill or Terry?

We had a strong defensive record in qualifying and imagine we will be fairly defensive under Roy.

    Good goal threat as well.

Said I would steer clear of England players but tempted by one of these two.

Which team are you most looking forward to watching at the Euros? (for entertainment)

Ironically I'd most like to see Belgium, but with them out I must admit, and feel weird saying so, ze Germans.

Followed closely by Eire, who's tournament (albeit WC) fighting spirit usually makes for some great games.

As for neutral teams, the Germans and Dutch are always good value. Best opening match i'd say Poland v Russia.

Having a go at an England squid. Basically I think Hodgson had a tough task in picking a squad in only two weeks, so he went with what he knew - Liverpool players. Maybe even with a "I'll show them what I can do with these players" attitude.

Carroll → Crouch (far, far better season)
    Johnson → Richards (no-brainer)
    Downing → AJohnson/Lennon/Sinclair/Sturridge
Green → Butland (and have blew-it-once-Green on backup instead, to give the young talent some going-to-the-tourney experience)

and most important: captaincy away from Gerrard, this way you can bench him when he eventually doesn't deliver

I'd pick Holt over Crouch/Carroll for the same reason (better season than both), apart from that I agree with those. A Johnson since he can provide an impact from the bench if a game is going badly. Stewart '0 goals, 0 assists' Downing isn't the attacking player to turn to in a losing situation.

Can just imagine what would happen to Hodgson if Hart got injured and they were left with 2 goalies without an England cap between them.
Richards can't hold down a first team place at his club. Good player but I have the feeling there's something not right with him off the pitch.
      Downing agreed.
Carroll / Crouch... it's a coinflip. I'd probably go with Carroll too tbh. Younger and good experience for him. Crouch is 31 now and never going to be an England regular.

Ignored my point. Richards is every bit as good as Zabaletta and better. Zab can play left back too. So the fact that Richards has lost his place leads me to believe that it has something to do with non football reasons.

Brendan Rogers is one of the names being linked with Liverpool. I'd actually like that to happen, Liverpool players should go down in price after this season and the defence could return to being good for clean sheets. I guess he'd take Siggy with him. Given the numbers of chances Liverpool create Siggy could be a goal machine, unless he develops woodwork syndrome.
