Mario Gomez is at the double as Germany see off Holland to clinch their second victory of the tournament. Nicklas Bendtner also notches twice but his endeavours are not quite enough as Portugal steal a late win over Denmark to keep their last eight hopes alive:

Portugal 3 Denmark 2
Morten Olsen kept faith in the same starting XI that saw off Holland in Matchday 1. The Danish boss has a couple of injury worries following last night’s clash, though, after Dennis Rommedahl and Niki Zimling both limped out of the proceedings. The former, in particular, looks a real doubt after sustaining what looks like a hamstring injury.

Nicklas Bendtner’s brace helped his 1.3% of Fantasy owners to a 10 point return while Michael Krohn-Deli continued to make a mockery of his 6.0 price tag in the McDonald’s game – he picked up attacking points for the second game in a row after providing the assist for the Arsenal man’s opener. Olsen’s men still have a chance of progressing to the knockouts, though, and have all to play for in their final Group B game next Sunday – the only trouble is they now square up to Germany.

Portugal were also unchanged from the side that lost narrowly to Germany. Helder Postiga continued as the lone striker in a 4-3-3 and justified his inclusion by grabbing his side’s second, while Nani provided five goalscoring opportunities and picked up an assist but, for once, Cristiano Ronaldo’s finishing let him down. The Real Madrid man had six attempts against Denmark but fluffed his lines every time; a yellow card late in the match meant he picked up a single point in the McDonald’s game and frustrated the many Fantasy managers who had handed him the armband.

At the back, Pepe and Fabio Coentrao (both priced at 6.5 in the McDonald’s game) produced attacking points for their Fantasy owners, with a goal and assist respectively, while sub Silvestre Valera grabbed the all-important winner that leaves them with a chance of progressing. There are a number of permutations in the so-called Group of Death – Portugal could still qualify if they lose to Holland by a single goal and Denmark are also beaten, for example, but the bottom line is if they win against the Dutch and the Danes fail to beat Germany, the Portuguese will be through to the final eight. Given the Dutch’s defensive woes, Ronaldo looks likely to be handed the chance to atone for yesterday’s failings when Paulo Bento’s men next take to the pitch on Sunday.

Germany 2 Holland 1
Joachim Low continued with the same starting lineup that defeated Portugal 1-0 in their Group B opener. Mario Gomez joined Alan Dzagoev as the tournament’s joint-top scorer by grabbing both his side’s goals in the 2-1 win, while Bastian Schweinsteiger provided his 9.5% Fantasy owners with a nine point haul, thanks to a pair of assists and eight recovered balls. Despite Germany’s attacking threat, the likes of Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller and Lukas Podolski have all failed to pick up any attacking returns over their back-to-back victories and, with just a point needed against Denmark to finish as group winners, their owners will be hoping Low doesn’t hand some of his squad members a chance to shine against Morten Olsen’s side at the weekend. Ozil was the unluckiest of the above-mentioned trio last night; he provided three goalscoring opportunities and also hit the post but currently sits with just five points to his name in the McDonald’s game.

Although the threat of rest and rotation may ultimately prove unfounded when Low names his starting XI for the Denmark game, one thing is for certain – Jerome Boateng will not feature, after picking up his second booking of the tournament. This could perhaps allow Lars Bender a chance at right-back – Low had mentioned him as a contender for the position in the tournament build-up – though the more likely scenario would be to shift Philipp Lahm over to the right and allow 5.9 priced Marcel Schmelzer a chance on the left.

Back-to-back defeats means Bert Van Marwijk’s men have it all to do on Sunday. The Holland boss welcomed back Joris Mathijsen to the heart of defence for last night’s defeat but the Dutch looked ill-at-ease at the back and were picked apart by Schweinsteiger’s superb passes for the Gomez goals. A couple of second half changes may indicate what’s to come for the Portugal match, as Mark Van Bommel and Ibrahim Afellay made way for Rafael Van Der Vaart and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Priced at 6.5 in the McDonald’s game, Afellay has picked up over 8% ownership after his performances on the left in recent friendlies – of the two, his absence would be a far more significant for Fantasy managers if Van Marwijk chooses to shake things up; with the Holland boss critical of his wide men post-match, this may well prove to be the case.

With Wesley Sneijder moving from a central position to the left and Robin Van Persie partnered by Huntelaar, Holland looked far more threatening, though Germany seemed content to sit deep and hit on the counter. Sneijder created six goalscoring opportunities and picked up an assist for Van Persie’s consolation, with the latter managing a total of four attempts on the German goal.

Arjen Robben’s Fantasy owners will be a little apprehensive after the winger threw a strop when Van Marwijk chose to replace him with Dirk Kuyt towards the end – the show of insolence won’t go down well with the no-nonsense manager. Nothing less than a win is required in their final match against Portugal, then, and, while that still might not be enough to see them through, a more attack-minded outlook will surely be in Van Marwijk’s thoughts as he seeks to re-establish a sense of pride in his side’s play at the very least.

If Moyes imports his slow start / strong finish tendency to Spurs then Levy could beunder a lot of pressure come September.

That tendency must surely enter consideration when the fictures come out next week, makes Spurs a less attractive early season option for me even if the fix look good.

I think a lot of people have cause & effect wrong on Harry's exit and the possibility of a Bale/Modric exit.

Spurs are going to cash in on Modric and maybe Bale, Harry wants them to stay so he can compete top 4, Levy says no, that is why Harry is going.

I disagree with both of you 🙂 I think Modric and Bale are just as likely to go with as without Harry, and the reason is lack of CL football not money. Harry's departure is not about money, he's been forced out, it wasn't his choice.

I have no idea, and that's what worries me about this decision. I want to trust Levy but it feels like overreach, back to back 5ths from Martin Jol wasn't enough and we ended up with Ramos, two 4ths aren't enough for Harry and we end up with....?

I can see both sides to the argument. On the one hand 'Arry was attempting to manipulate Levy into giving him a longer contract now after flirting with the England job for so long. Coupled with the collapse which was a large part Arrys fault (lack of rotation and poor tactical decision in the second half of the season) and his failure to take responsibility for that.

On the other hand - there is no obvious successor as you say. And we will probably lose players this summer who had loyalty to Arry. I said it yesterday but I think our decline is inevitable with the signings around us (Chelsea and Arsenal in particular but I think Liverpool will improve next year as well) but now whoever the new manager is will be blamed for that decline.

Harry certainly hasn't been very diplomatic: when he wants the England job he says the speculation doesn't affect the players, when he wants a longer contract at Spurs he says the speculation does affect the players, and to then say that he would have taken the England job - that's a red rag to someone as ruthless as Levy.

First of all: In my view Moyes and Benitez are out of the question per default, because both of their football philosophies are almost diametrical to Spurs values.

Second of all: Redknapp should have stayed.

But now that the damage is done, it is good to look back on when Redknapp was appointed.

He was appointed as a "temporary solution", because we needed a completely new course away from relegation. Now that his excellent reign is over however, it should be time for the "long term" solution that we have been seeking all along.

Moyes and Benitez certainly not out of the question.

I don't buy into this line about not sharing philosophy. I wouldn't say D Moyes has a philosophy other than making the most out of the resources he has.

Good managers will adapt to the squads they inherit and build from there and both of these are good managers.

Moyes seems the most likely to me (and the bookies), Martinez is probably still too much of an unknown quantity with money to spend, Capello is a mercenary who can't speak English, AVB carries echos of Ramos. Moyes does on the face of it feel like something of a retrograde step, his record in the transfer market isn't all that brilliant, and his strength seems to be a rearguard, make-do-and-mend action with limited funds, which he's brilliant at, but does it fit the brief for a chairman who isn't satisfied with 4th place in the PL?

Why would he move to an 1.FC Cologne team that's just been relegated to the 2. Bundesliga?

Schalke 04 are very interested, and van der Vaart's wife lives in nearby Cologne, but the player himself had indicated that he wanted to stay at Tottenham. That was before Redknapp's departure, of course.

Ok, I’m getting really frustrated with these captain polls. Where are the defenders?

I’m captaining Jordi Alba here to go for the clean sheet, which looks a dead cert vs. Ireland with the possession Spain will have. Sure Spain will get goals but will they come to Iniesta, Fabregas, Silva, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Torres? Who knows if I will get lucky and it be the 1/2 Spain players I have that get them, or will it be one of the other half dozen attacking options? I don’t know, but I do know my defender will get the clean sheet.

2/12 granted, both in the group of death, but Spain don't conceed much (possession or goals) & Ireland don't score many. I'm backing a clean sheet there.

There has barely been a CS in the tournament so far. Alba looks like a decent bet for one tonight but you never know. Ireland are dangerous from set pieces and apart from Pique/Ramos they are not that well equipped to deal with the aerial threat.

        Going to the bookies:
Iniesta (my attacking option for Spain) is 16/5 to score anytime. ~25% of it happening.
Clean sheet is 8/11. ~58% chance of it happening.
Jordi Alba is 8/1 to get on the score sheet himself. ~11% chance of it happening.

I know I'll look silly after Iniesta gets a hat trick and Robbie Keane nicks a consolation for Ireland but I have to go with Jordi for this one.

      - Statistically speaking, in fantasy football, attacking players score more points than defenders. FACT.
      - Spain's defence isn't arguably at full strength for this tournament.
      - It's more exciting to want a player to score than a player not to score.

You have decided to go this far for a reason. Like I said yesterday, If I only had 1 captain it would be Benzema or Iniesta. Sure Alba has high chance of 6-7 pts, but do you really think the winner of this whole thing will be on a 6 pt captain this week. I dont. Play to win, not to score average. Iniesta and then Benzema are great choices - One of them will bring the points.

Alba also on a yellow and will limit his attacking to avoid being out of position to defend and risking missing the last game. Spain with 6 mids wont need too much from him attacking wise, unless even towards end of game. Also with their possession v Ireland, I cant see to many RB's.

Ruud Gullit was saying last night that he thinks Germany will play for a draw against Portugal to make sure Netherlands get knocked out!

    What say you?

I know there isn't much love between the sides but playing for the draw is a difficult and risky game plan to play. As pro's you wanna just make sure and win the game.

I think Germany will play to win too. I think they are far too professional to try something like that. I think Gullit is being too cynical. 🙂

Sounds implausible to me, I think Germany would have more to gain by keeping on a winning streak.

I think QPR are going to be a far better FPL team next season. Will certainly be looking to pick up a cheap defender from their ranks.

It's a possibility I suppose, he seems to be getting frozen out of the Fulham setup by Diarra.

Why do they want Netherlands knocked out? They beat them quite fairly yesterday and they can do that again, if they have to. Netherlands have been poor anyway, I won't be surprised if they don't even beat Portugal.

        National rivalry.
You've got to admit it would be tempting to try and do it to the Germans/French/Argies if we had the chance.

Not impossible is it... as long as Germany beat Denmark, if Netherlands beat Portugal by 2 goals that puts them ahead on goal difference.

Just noticed Dzagoev is only on 2 points in some peoples teams. What is that about?

Torn for captaincy choice tonight. Have Iniesta, Alba, Cassano, Maggio and Strinic playing.

Mainly torn between Iniesta and Alba. Main rival has Dzagoev as captain and stuck. I have Dzagoev (but didn't captain) and he has Alba. So Alba would be the ultra-safe option i guess...

I am thinking along the smae lines , only between Silva and Alba. I think I'm going to chose the attacker.

Mids have the best chance of more pts...has to be iniesta....but I have a sneaky feeling Cassano will do well...hope so anyway, as I have him.

I have Benzema, Debuchy, Young + Hart to fall back on tomorrow if it goes pear shaped. I guess Iniesta it is.
