Fernando Torres is at the double as Spain eliminate Republic of Ireland with a crushing 4-0 victory. David Silva picks up a goal and pair of assists in the rout while, in Group C’s early kick-off, Italy and Croatia share the spoils after Mario Mandzukic cancels out Andrea Pirlo’s free-kick opener:

Italy 1 Croatia 1
For yesterday’s clash with Croatia, Cesare Prandelli kept faith with the same starting XI that drew against Spain last Sunday. Andrea Pirlo picked up the points for the second match in a row – the 8.0 priced midfielder added to his assist against Spain by firing home a direct free-kick to give his side the lead and now has 13 points to his name in the McDonald’s game, seven more than any other Italian player. Antonio Cassano was unlucky not to get amongst the points – he had two shots and created four goalscoring opportunities, while Mario Balotelli’s five attempts was more than any team mate, though midfielder Claudio Marchisio also impressed going forward, firing off four shots.

Intriguingly, Prandelli has now subbed off the same three players in each of the two Group C matches. Thiago Motta, Balotelli and Cassano all made way midway through the second half, suggesting the Italy manager is clearly intent on refreshing his attacking options as the opposition begins to tire. Italy now need a win against Republic of Ireland to stand any chance of reaching the knockouts, though amongst many other permutations, a 2-2 in the Spain-Croatia match would eliminate the Azzurri, even if they defeat the Irish.

Slaven Bilic’s side was also unchanged, with Mario Mandzukic up front alongside Nikica Jelavic once again. Mandzukic, an out-of-position midfielder in the McDonald’s game, took his goal tally to three in two fixtures after notching his side’s equaliser on 72 minutes as Croatia took the match to their opponents after the break – his price has already risen to 6.1 since the start of the tournament but a further increase is surely on the cards again.

Ivan Strinic is another cut-price Croatian Fantasy asset who produced the goods yesterday. Costing just 4.0 in the McDonald’s game, he was thought of as no more than a squad filler by many but his display at left-back justified his inclusion ahead of Danijel Pranjic for Bilic’s side. Strinic had two attempts at goal and created three goalscoring opportunities for his team mates, picking up an assist for Mandzukic’s headed equaliser. Croatia now sit on four points but a defeat against Spain, combined with a win for Italy against Ireland, would be enough to send them home along with Giovanni Trapattoni’s men.

Spain 4 Republic of Ireland 0
There was no false nine for Spain last night – this time, the real one turned up. Cesc Fabregas made way for Fernando Torres in the only change to Vicente Del Bosque’s lineup as the defending champions tore into Republic of Ireland from the off. Torres took advantage off some slack defending and vindicated his selection by firing past Shay Given with less than four minutes on the clock – before the game was out, he’d added a second to pick up a 10 point return. With his starting role now looking a little more assured, Torres – priced at just 8.5 in the McDonald’s game – is sure to pick up plenty Fantasy suitors after last night’s display.

David Silva is a far pricier forward option at 10.5 but has now played a part in four of Spain’s five goals so far and still looks strong value, despite the cost. The City playmaker provided the assist for Fabregas’ equaliser against Italy and followed that up last night with a goal, two assists and five recovered balls against the Irish for a 13 point return – he is now the top-scoring forward in the McDonald’s game to date. Fabregas owners were more than a little worried after he dropped to the bench – the former Arsenal man had risen to 8.6 on the back of his goal against Italy but, despite a mere 16 minutes on the pitch last night, he still managed a six point return after hammering the fourth past Shay Given; Torres’ performance must surely put his game time at risk for the Croatia game, however, with Del Bosque promising post-match he won’t be holding back in Monday’s final Group C match.

For Republic of Ireland, the party is already over. Giovanni Trapattoni made one change to his starting XI, with Simon Cox preferred to Kevin Doyle alongside Robbie Keane up front. The alteration made no difference, as Ireland were simply overwhelmed by their vastly superior opponents – Shay Given made 11 saves to keep the scoreline down, with his Fantasy owners picking up a three point return.

Wide men Damien Duff and Aiden McGeady mirrored Given’s score due to the recovered balls rule but, with Ireland now out of the competition, their Fantasy assets look likely to be sold off over the next day or so, with the prices of their most popular players likely to drop. Trapattoni could well turn to the likes of James McClean on the flank or Shane Long as a partner for Keane up front as he contemplates shuffling his pack ahead of the showdown with his native Italy.

Sorry to keep psoting this but I haven't got a response yet.

“No assist is given to a player who creates his own goal scoring opportunity (i.e. solo run/dribble).”

This means that a player can’t assist his own goal IMHO.

Am I wrong here or is this "explanation" for the non-award of Iniesta's assist just utter nonsense?

        No, I won't.

If they had said that it didn't "directly" lead to the goal, I'd have disgareed but I'd have accepted the logic and forgot about it.

However, they're using their own rules wrongly here IMO, and that's just utter idiocy.

Given parried Iniesta's shot. Silva had to jink and jive his tame shot through three defenders to get the ball to the goal, therefore he created his own goal opportunity.

          GET OVER IT!!

It's debateable, but it can be argued that he created his own goal scoring opportunity.

If the "i.e. solo run/dribble" wasn't in brackets, then it would be totally wrong not to give it. As it is they've given themselves a get out of jail card.

Yes it can be argued that he did but the rule used to justify it isn't the right one.

Those words are saying that a player cant assist himself.

No assist was given because it was deemed Silva created his own chance by having a few touches of the ball to create the space as opposed to Torres' second goal where Silva got the assist by playing the ball through into space.

I don't agree with the rule but that's their justification.

I think a lot of people are a bit sick of the debate which has lost its enthusiasm, hence the lack of replies.

Yes I get it but the rule that they have quoted doesn't relate to the scenario, that rule is saying that a aplyer cannot assist himself, it's got nothing to do with Iniesta's goal. ZERO. NOTHING. The rule is there to say that a player can't assist himself. They basivally justified not giving Silva the assist for the Silva goal.

That is what that rule means, but fantasy are arguing that it is this rule which the assist violated, "An attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal" - i.e. they argue that it didn't lead DIRECTLY to a goal, because Silva worked the space.

As I say, I disagree with the system.

      Assists *

A player will be credited with a “goal assist” when he delivers/plays the final pass, cross, header or shot, which leads to the goal being scored. This will also apply to set plays (i.e. corner, free kick, throw-in etc.).

An attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal.
When a pass, shot or cross by an attacker contributes to an own goal, an assist can be awarded to the attacker.
Only one player can be credited with an assist per goal scored.
No assist is awarded to a player winning a penalty or a free kick.
No assist is given to a player who creates his own goalscoring opportunity (i.e. solo run/dribble).

Yes and I accept that. If they had said "it didn't driectly lead to a goal" therefore nop assist, I would accpet it.

However, the rule they quoted above isn't related, it's about not being able to assist your own goal.

No, another guy has posted it in the response he got too.

They're basically saying ti's not an assist becuase it didn't lead "driectly to a goal". I understand that, althiough I disgaree.

But the part about "No assist is given to a player who creates his own goal scoring opportunity (i.e. solo run/dribble).” is not in any way relevant as it's a rule that says you can't assist yourself.

So, they haven't got a clue what they're tlaking about.

I asked my friend of his interpretation of the rule, he plays FPL and isn't playing this game and I just quoted him those words with no context and he asked him what its referring to and he said :

A player can't assist his own goal. That is CLEARLY what it means.

            I emailed them about this. The reply was;

" Thank you for your query regarding Iniesta's assist.

This has been reviewed and it has been confirmed that no assist should be awarded.

Iniesta's shot was parried by Given and then fallen to Silva. He then had to take several touches before threading it through the legs of three defenders therefore creating his own chance. From the rules:
            - No assist is given to a player who creates his own goal scoring opportunity (i.e. solo run/dribble).

                  No, it's not actually.

I'm wanting someone to acknowldge that the rule quoted above CLEARLY means that you can't assist your own goal, not for the sake of being right or for proving anything or for getting any extra points (in fact, quite the opposite) but for clarity about the rule and to ensure that I'm not the only one who sees it like that.

I think you're being daft, to be honest. In language there is always room for ambiguity but as intelligent beings we can usually figure out the intended meaning from context. In this case there are two interpretations of it, one of which could be a reasonable rule and the other is a nonsense. Clearly a player could never get assist points and goal points for a dribbling and shooting. So the only reasonable interpretation is that the player is not assisted if he creates his own goal.

Not going with Pirlo and Silva has cost me biiiiiig time on Sky Sports FF, after both got the MOTM 5 points it was the difference between 5 or 6 points off the very top and a drop to 100th place. Should have listened to those on here that said to go Pirlo over Cassano

Which combo would you prefer for the final 2 group game days(hope this makes sense)

    A) Torres (C) + Silva v Croatia THEN Benzema (C) v Sweden and Young v Ukraine,

    OR

    B) Torres (C) v Croatia THEN Rooney (C) + Young v Ukraine and Benzema v Sweden

where should I use my 1FT?

    Chialkis | Rui Patricio
    Maniatis | Hubnik | Maggio | Alba | Debuchy
    Shirokov | Pilar | Mandzukic | Iniesta | AYoung
    CR7 | Cassano | Benzema

    my thoughts:
    Hubnik --> Perquis
    Rui Patricio --> Malafeev/Akinfeev
    Cassano | Lewandowski

could you advice me, guys? Or maybe you have other thoughts where it would be good to use the transfer..? 😉

I can't even see any point in using my WC. Sure, some of my dudes haven't scored the big points, but they've been so close, so damn close...

    Given/Andersen

Gabre Salassie, Debuchy, Piszczek, Alba, Maniatis

    Iniesta, Sneijder, Shirokov, Ozil, Konoplyanka

    Ibrahimovic, Benzema, Lewandowski

Anything to do here? Sure, Maniatis stinks, but he can wait until after the group stage as there aren't any better options. Am I right? AM I RIGHT?

I don't believe anything about team sheets until Demi posts it. His goal celebration has caused a stir and the France FF is massively sniffy about such things after their World Cup embarrasment. I think it would be odd to dump him though, but you never know with the French FF. I certainly don't trust anything Lequipe says about Nasri tho.

If it's for your other leagues then it makes sense, I don't mind you doing that. But it doesn't make sense for our H2H - if it comes off well, it does for the other team too. Whatever happens, we can't make up the deficit with that captain.

Lewy. Di Natalie is close second but ITA haven't really looked like scoring many, Cassano hasn't looked like scoring ever. I like Lewy's chances in a make or break Czech clash, with the crowd behind them the Poles will have a real go, and showed against RUskies that they can exert a lot of pressure. Lewy in is my FT for GW3, so perhaps I'm biased.

I'd go further. Ditch Ozil, Afellay and Muller, get RvP and perhaps Nasri (should be back for GW3 even if he doesn't start tonight). Then you'll have extra funds to upgrade Ward. On WC so you'll get POL starting GK before deadline, so can pick Chesny or Tyton.

On WC, might as well overhaul.

    Group C)
Argentina and Japan lead the way in group c after wins over Ivory Coast and Serbia in the 1st gw. Just like group b, we have the top 2 teams playing each other knowing a win will all most guarantee progreesion to the next round. Ivory Coast and Serbia clinging on to tournament status by the fingernails.
Argentina amassed a whopping 106pts to lead Japan by 80pts coming to the end of gw2. Japan (Wazzagoal and Gerbil) have a extra player today with some interesting differentials with Mexes, Parker, Cabaye, Isaksson and Larsson carrying Japaness hopes. Argentina (Canadian football and Archie) hope Debuchyx2 and Yarmolenko will stave them off.
Serbia lead Ivory Coast in the losers go home clash 98-75 but Ivory Coast have 7 players to play as opposed to Serbia (Messimerized and Teddy) who only have 4. ivory Coast ( Mull and The Giggs Boson) will look to their differentials in Young, Gerrard and Lescott x2. Serbia hoping Larsson does the trick for them.
Interesting to note that Japan Gerbil) have activated the last wildcard in the group for gameweek 3.

Neither. If it happens, it will be because Ménez combines better with Benzema and is more explosive with his runs. Martin offers better technical skills than Malouda in a midfield area where France might need reinforcements, as Ukraine are perceived by the FFF to be technically stronger than England.

But again, let's just wait and see what the teamsheet says.

In fairness PB, Nasri ran the French midfield against ENG. If Menez combines better with Benzy then why not make that selection in the first place?

Sorry, I didn't express that very clearly. Nasri is better at keeping possession and patiently looking for gaps, which was deemed necessary against a defensively-orientated England. Blanc and the FFF have been making noises about needing more dynamic runs against a more attacking Ukraine, however.

The solution chosen for today has been to go with Ménez and Nasri, which seems perfectly sensible - I never trusted the article in L'Equipe. I'd like to see Giroud get an extended run though.

    From the Beeb:

Said Madrid on Twitter: "France needs to put in a good performance if they want to beat ukraine. It could be Benzema's game today I predict."

'It could be... I predict'? That's one hell of a fence-sit. Most of these Tweets the Beeb broadcasts are so vacuous and really should not be let anywhere near a prestigious media outlet.

Perhaps, and I appreciate these 'live updates' must be difficult to fill with even half decent content, but Twitter is such a lazy medium. The whole concept of having no space to say much of any import really plays to the reactionary, mass crowd who have nothing to add.

Saying it "could" be Benzemas game today is like saying it " it could or could not" be Benzema's game today. And even saying it will be "Benzema's game" is massively ambiguous, what does that mean? Yes it means he will perform well but how well is completely unmentioned. I would rather they made the occasional wrong statement than just making vague non-statements.

      Actually, I'll just repeat:

If it’s for your other leagues then it makes sense, I don’t mind you doing that. It's the best choice for a classic league. But it doesn’t make sense for our H2H with Sweden – if it comes off well, it comes off well for them too. Whatever happens, we can’t make up the deficit with that captain. Need to gamble on Nasri doing nothing and Ibra doing lots.

Wait. Just re-read your post. Do you just mean playing him? And captain someone else? That's fine, no problem. Fair one.

Should I stick with Alba (C), with a CS, or risk armband on Benzema tonight?

Anyone have the Swedish lineup for tonight? I heard the Swedish FA released it already but can't seem to find it.

Blanc makes two changes, both surprising. Clichy is in for Evra and Menez replaces Malouda.

What's to explain. You get one to use. It means you can make unlimited transfers until next GW deadline for zero cost. Fairly simple, and explained in the 'Rules' section of the game site.
