A tap in from Wayne Rooney clinches a 1-0 victory for England and sets up a quarter final showdown with Italy on Sunday June 24. France go through as Group D runners-up despite a 2-0 loss against Sweden that saw Laurent Blanc’s side lose for the first time in 24 games – hardly the perfect preparation for their last eight clash with champions Spain:

England 1 Ukraine 0
Roy Hodgson makes just one change from the XI that started the previous match against Sweden. With his two-match suspension now over, Wayne Rooney made an instant return to the first-team as Andy Carroll dropped to the bench. The United man made the difference up front, firing four shots and scoring the only goal of the match, courtesy of a close-range tap-in early in the second half. Steven Gerrard created three goalscoring opportunities and provided the assist for Rooney’s goal – the England skipper now stands on 18 points and is one of only four players to pick up attacking returns in all three rounds of group matches.

Joleon Lescott’s clean sheet and extra point for recovered balls took his tally to 17 points – at 5.6, he’s been the best value player in Hodgson’s side and, like Gerrard and Rooney, can expect plenty of Fantasy investment prior to Thursday evening’s deadline. While the likes of Lescott has over 18% ownership, Rooney has a mere 4.4% due to his recent ban and looks like a decent differential armband option for day four of the quarter finals.

A tournament that had started so promisingly ended in bitter disappointment for the co-hosts. Ukraine’s Matchday one victory over Sweden was no more than a distant memory, as back-to-back defeats against France and England sealed their fate. Oleg Blokhin tinkered with his starting XI, changing four of his first-team for the must-win match. The front two were changed – Andriy Shevchenko was unable to shake off a knee injury and only made the bench, while Andriy Voronin was also omitted, with Marko Devic and Artem Milevskyi handed the forward roles. At the back, Yaroslav Rakitskiy replaced Taras Mikhalik at centre-half, while Sergei Nazarenko dropped out for Denis Garmash in central midfield.

Yevhen Konoplyanka had five attempts but managed a mere one on target, while both Yevhen Selin and Andriy Yarmolenko created four goalscoring opportunities apiece but England – aided by a bizarre linesman’s call – held firm to chalk up their first clean sheet of the tournament and set up a showdown with Italy.

France 0 Sweden 2
Erik Hamren’s men finished the tournament with their pride intact, after stunning the Group D favourites 2-0. The Sweden boss made a couple of enforced changes – with Johan Elmander and Rasmus Elm both injured, Ola Toivonen and Emir Bajrami were handed starting roles up front and on the left respectively. Seb Larsson was the star man on the night for the Swedes – the Sunderland winger provided a goal and assist and had four attempts on goal, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic rewarded his 17% of Fantasy owners by notching his second goal of the tournament.

Laurent Blanc rested Yohan Cabaye after the Newcastle midfielder picked up a thigh problem in the previous match, allowing Yann M’Vila his first start of the tournament. Out wide, Jeremy Menez missed out despite scoring against Ukraine –Hatem Ben Arfa was the replacement as France kept with the 4-2-3-1 formation that helped them defeat Ukraine last time round.

Karim Benzema was heavily backed for the armband last night and had as many as eight attempts, though failed to muster a single shot in target. The Real Madrid man also created four goalscoring opportunities for his team mates, as did Samir Nasri and Mathieu Debuchy but Blanc’s side passed up chance after chance to find the net. With just three goals and a single clean sheet over their trio of group games, the tournament has been a bitter disappointment thus far and, with their unbeaten record now gone, morale in the camp – and Fantasy faith – will have considerably dipped ahead of the game with Spain next Saturday. Blanc will now need to make at least one change for the weekend – Philippe Mexes picked up his second yellow card and is now suspended, with Laurent Koscielny looking likely to replace him at the back.

    Hi everyone,

do you think having 4 Spaniards for QFs is way too much?

    Pique/Alba/Busquets/Silva

    Care to comment on that?

Downgrade Sifakis to a 4.0 GK. You're not gonna play him anyway (same day as Neuer). If you downgrade Arbeloa to Alba then you have another 1m you can use on someone else.

Very true, rookie mistake not noticing that...

I think Arbeloa is worth the extra 0.5 for being more of a differential and more likely to return attacking points imo.

Busquets is a recovered ball machine and has actually played a high amount of key passes in comparison to others for that price.

Iniesta has the highest shot per game ratio after CR7, a matter of time in my opinion.

Oliverira is a differential and can easily be taken out if he doesnt perform on the first day, and I trust CR7 to deliver! 🙂

I wanted to pick Muller and had him in my original draft but have decided to go for something a little bit different to the standard.

Anyone fancy a cheeky double up on england defence? Hart and Lescott are pretty cheap and I fancy us to keep a CS against Italy?

7m is expensive, but ignore the fact that it's for a defender. Odds must be very high that Jerries keep Greece out especially with Karagounis susp. 6pts pre RB means a 7m milf needs to score a goal to beat that and there aren't many of those around at that price that will do.

I'm going Neuer/Humm/Boat or Badst. Go big or go home.

Order of Extreme Valour - FFS Friendly World Cup - Matchday 3 Award

READ THIS FIRST: THIS IS THE AWARD FOR PLAYERS OF FFS FRIENDLY WORLD CUP ONLY AND DOES NOT INCLUDE PEOPLE FROM FFS EURO 2012! THERE HAS BEEN A SEPARATE AWARD FOR THAT. THANK YOU.

What a way to finish the group stages. England progressing to the quarters and France throwing a massive wobbly against the already eliminated Swedes. It has been somewhat of a slow burner this Matchday for courageous picks, with every success being tinged with a failure. This hasn't prevented though a truly spectacular performance from leaving the rest for dead.

I judged the award by the rules posted here. http://uefaffs.weebly.com/7/post/2012/06/the-order-of-extreme-valour.html

    To recap:

A “successful gamble” is defined as a single player choice that returns an unexpectedly high number of points. The awards will be given on these criteria:
    - Underappreciation
    - Overachievement
    - Underdog team
    - Captaincy

Honourable Mentions - A couple of decisions which were worthy of note if not the award:

-Kostja toed the line between bravery and insanity by making the madcap choice of the benched Balotelli. He arose from the bench and secured his noble owner 5 points with a sweet overhead kick. -Sleep Talk was richly rewarded for taking a punt on Greek central defender Kyriakos Papadopoulous. Not only did he manage to pick the right Papadopoulous, he also correctly picked a defender who helped to shut out the fearsome Russian attack, accumulating 6 recovered balls en route.

    And now for the winner:

France had been favourites to become group winners from the outset. Only 1 goal conceded in 2 matches and a 20+ unbeaten run made selecting French opposition players truly unappealing and a task only to be undertaken by the most valiant of managers. Step forward Messimerized. He bravely chose Seb Larsson whose vicious volley and deadly delivery earned him and his owner 11 points.

And with that the group stages are over. Congratulations to Messimerized and commiserations to JKisthe1, who failed to make the Awards post for the first time. We have one day off now before the quarters so be sure to spend this time selecting the most obscure and talented players still in the tournament to see if you can win yourself an "Order of Extreme Valour" Award.

Stay tuned for our Day 1 Report and preview of Day 2!

Good day fellow fantasy addicts. Any willing contestants to partake in another episode of 'Rate My QF Team!'? Think I've come up with a team I'm pretty happy with. Anything I'm missing?

GK: Patricio - Tzorvas (or any 4.0 GK)

DEF: Balzaretti or Lescott - Alba - Hummels - K. Papa - Limbersky

MID: Iniesta - Gerrard - Ozil - Pirlo - Pilar

FWD: Gomez - Ronaldo - Oliveira

Obviously, but has featured in every game and at 4.5 isn't much of a risk. If game goes into ET he also has possibility of receiving additional minutes.

If you have a 4.5 striker go Neuer at least imo. Don't know about Balzaretti also.

Very good side. You could downgrade Ozil and upgrade Nelson as he has had 3 cameos and done nothing. That could change against the Czech's late on but i'm not sure about him. His price is awesomely cheap though.

He's had chances in his 3 cameos I must say. He's looking to attack and score when he comes on and again at 4.5 its low risk though obviously it does take up one of your valuable striker slots. Hopefully you can strengthen your squad enough with the additional finances.

I like Busquets as a better value play than Iniesta. Plus it frees up 3.0 to spend elsewhere

Depending on RB then? Surely Iniesta playing OOP provides more opportunity for points. It does free up a chunk but I'd almost rather Ozil ➡ Khedira instead

Jumping on Meinhoff's Oliveria bandwagon (shamelessly)...thoughts chaps?!

    Neuer/Butland
    Maniatis/Gebre Selassie/Lescott/Alba/Boateng
    Ozil/Fabregas/Pirlo/Jiracek/Gerrard
    Gomez/Oliveria/CR7

Anyone convince me to downgrade Ozil or Pirlo for cheaper players (from the same team?) wins, umm, a packet of custard creams and a, winky emoticon

      Here goes....

I honestly think Cech is a waste...if he gets a CS your 7m Neuer(that prob has the best chance of a CS) is stuck on your bench. So if you reckon Cech is getting a CS(which I doubt) then upgrade Limb biscuit to Badstuber.

No real al capatino options for the span fix. Cabaye/Busq/Alonso are no where really...

But you know all of that already.

Oliviera punt would be a better choice.

I just think that if you have 3 expensive strikers, if anyone of them are disqualified from the Tourney, it's alot easier to downgrade them and for other teams strikers and then with extra moeny improve on defense or midfield.

I have Silva, Gomez, Cr7... If anything happens to them, i don't have to worry about the limited 8 transfers we have as I would not need to shift around players for funds.

    CR7 / Gomez / Oliveira

Limbersky, Maniatis and Oliveira will probably end up on the bench
