Our series of articles focussing on moves within the domestic game continues with a look at the new man in charge at Norwich, Chris Hughton. The former Birmingham City boss arrives at Carrow Road on a three-year contract after the two clubs agreed a £2m compensation deal for his services and takes the reins following the shock departure of Paul Lambert to Aston Villa.

Lambert’s somewhat acrimonious exit was swiftly swept under the carpet as the Canaries wasted little time in appointing Hughton to the hotseat a mere 24 hours after the former manager was officially unveiled at Villa Park. Although the club were linked with the likes of Malky Mackay and Neil Lennon, Norwich chief executive revealed Hughton was the stand-out contender:

We looked at the UK and international market, and had a detailed look at who was available and who wasn’t and we wanted to try to find the person who could take us forward. We thought it was key to have top-league experience, preferably in the Premier League and at the end of it all we looked at the names and Chris stood out as number one candidate. We recognised that unanimously.

The History

Following his retirement at the age of 34, Hughton spent several years as a member of the Tottenham coaching staff and worked under as many as 10 different managers at White Hart Lane. His spell at the north London outfit lasted 14 years, with stints as a coach in charge of the youth team, under 21 side and as assistant manager. His tenure came to an end back in 2007 when he was sacked along with then-manager Martin Jol, though Hughton wasn’t out of work for too long – only four months later he was appointed as first-team coach at Newcastle.

The managerial departures racked up at St James’ Park but, despite a couple of trial runs as caretaker boss, Mike Ashley remained unconvinced. Following the club’s relegation to the Championship under Alan Shearer, Hughton was eventually handed the role on a permanent basis in 2009-10, though, after a strong start to the season earned him three Manager of the Month awards between August and November. Hughton continued to impress and guided the club back to the top-flight at the first attempt in a campaign that saw the Magpies unbeaten at home all season. Life in the Premier League wasn’t so kind, however, and Hughton lasted just half a season before biting the dust, with Alan Pardew drafted in as his replacement.

His wealth of coaching experience meant Hughton didn’t have to wait much longer for his next challenge, as Birmingham came calling in June 2011 following their relegation to the Championship. Once again, the club’s strong home form was essential to their season, with the Blues losing just one of their 23 matches at St Andrews. Hughton guided them to the fifth round of the FA Cup and Group Stages of the Europa Cup but Birmingham stumbled in the Championship play-offs against Blackpool, going down 3-2 on aggregate after finishing fourth in the table, 12 points off automatic promotion.

The Previous Regime

Hughton has a tough task on his hands if he is to mirror the success of Paul Lambert. After guiding the Canaries to back-to-back promotions, the Scot steered them to 12th last term, with the Carrow Road outfit finishing on 47 points, 11 clear of the drop zone. The former boss had a tendency to utilise much of his squad, regularly changing both tactics and personnel, which ultimately proved frustrating for Fantasy managers and diminished their assets’ reliability – only two players, John Ruddy and Russell Martin, started more than 30 games last time out.

Lambert’s side were offensively strong and racked up 52 goals over the 2011/12 campaign – only the top six managed more. At the back, however, Hughton has plenty room for improvement – Norwich registered a mere three clean sheets all last season and conceded in all 19 games on the road.

The Season Ahead

There’s no denying that Lambert has left a considerable shadow for Hughton to kick start his Norfolk career under. Many will be sceptical the new boss can further the progress or replicate the success produced by the previous regime but players and media alike have been queuing up to pay compliment to Hughton’s abilities. Former charges such as Peter Lovenkrands has described him as “a players’ man”, while Colin Tattum, chief sports writer for the Birmingham Mail, revealed the Blues players were hugely impressed by every aspect of his approach – in essence, then, this bodes well for the team spirit fostered under Lambert that was integral to the Canaries’ recent revival.

In terms of tactics and what sort of shape we can expect Norwich to take next season, an interview with Hughton back in November last year sums up his approach to the game. A few months into the Birmingham job, he revealed:

I am still open to playing a tactical game that tries to get you a result. That’s in the formation you set yourself up in. But generally it’s about winning games and how you win games. My preferred formation is 4-4-2 or a form of 4-4-2, 4-4-1-1, with one playing a little bit more off the front, because I think that gives you a little bit more in the opposition half, it allows you to keep the ball more in their half. But I am open to change. Certainly what I want to do is play as much as possible a passing game, look to what your strengths are.

Hughton’s major concern surrounds the future of skipper Grant Holt. The forward was a cut-price gem last time round; starting at 5.5, he harvested 138 points and was Norwich’s best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) performer by some distance but question marks hang over whether he remain at Carrow Road next season after submitting a transfer request. The new manager’s penchant for wide men could well boost the prospects of Anthony Pilkington; the winger scored eight goals in just 23 starts in 2011/12 and, if he can benefit from more consistency of selection, may well be promoted in our thoughts.

Only two other players – Steve Morison and Wes Hoolahan – broke the 100 point mark in FPL last term. Hughton will be tasked with reigniting the former’s potential – Morison was a superb cut-price option in the first half of the campaign but tailed off dramatically, returning just one goal from Gameweek 22 onwards. Hoolahan is another who would well be boosted if he can nail down a regular role; he ended on a high after producing attacking points in five of his last seven starts and clearly has the potential to thrive – a possible role in “the hole” could be intriguing.

Without question, work has to be done at the back. Norwich conceded 66 goals under Lambert – only the three relegated teams shipped more. Just how much tightening up in defence will curtail Norwich’s attacking potential remains to be seen but if the clean sheets can flow with a little more regularity, the Canaries defensive assets could be worth considering – last season’s stats suggest Ruddy, Martin and co will remain as budget backline options. Already, Hughton has moved to address the vacancy at right-back following Kyle Naughton’s loan return to Spurs by signing Steven Whittaker from Glasgow Rangers on a free transfer.

Despite claiming he is happy with his side’s opening schedule, Hughton has just two generous matches over his first eight Gameweeks in charge, however. QPR and West Ham both roll up to Carrow Road and offer the prospect of points but trips to (ful, tot, new, che) in addition to home clashes against Liverpool and Arsenal, hold no appeal – Fantasy managers seem set to steer well clear of the Canaries, then, until their fixtures begin to look a little more favourable later on in the campaign.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

        Nah.......

Once again, Riccardo Montolivo looks set to take the not-quite-trequartista role at the front of the diamond, preferred to Thiago Motta and Alessandro Diamanti.

Antonio Cassano has a slight sprain in his knee, but is able to start alongside three-goal hero Mario Balotelli.

At the back, Ignazio Abate has recovered from his thigh injury and Christian Maggio is back from suspension, so there could be changes for the full-back positions.

It could be risky, as Maggio is more accustomed to Napoli using a 3-5-2 and showed difficulties when played as part of a four-man defence.

It’s reported Federico Balzaretti is feeling fatigued, so would make way for Abate, keeping Giorgio Chiellini at left-back

    FFS Euro Cup 2012 : Semi-Finals Round-Up

It almost seems just yesterday but exactly a month ago, we had 32 managers setting off in search for the ultimate glory - the European Championship 2012. And it has all boiled down to today. Indeed, ladies and gentlemen, the big finale is here!

Before we preview the mouth-watering clash in the finale, it's time for a traditional round-up of the Semi-finals.

    Semi-final Results:
    Croatia 105 vs Germany 95
    Italy 108 vs Denmark 96

    End of an Era
Had Germany gone all the way, it would have been a truly incredible story for many reasons and a great advert for this format of the Cup. It seemed they were just about doing enough at every stage to slip over the finish line.....until they came up against the Challenge of the Croats. The Germans' Felix Felicis potion finally seemed to have ran out and that marked the end of the "Jamtziness" era. Coincidentally, it also meant that the exit of the last Pot 1 heavyweight and the last Scout standing. Still..well played, kameraden.

    Danish Despair
Another success story, which has been a great advert for the Cup. Denmark were quietly going about their business in the group stages & quarter-finals and no-one seemed to realize that the underdogs had come thus far into Semi-finals. The Danish duo of Isacki & LightKnight showed tremendous valour in taking punts at such a crucial stage as the SFs and should be commended for their immense team spirit throughout the Cup. We also salute them for their achievements and phenomenal contribution to the Cup.

    Council strikes again!
"Yet another Cup final, yet another Council member" was a common phenomenon over the UCL, Euro's and the FWC (3/4 Cups so far). Is it just a coincidence that another Council member might win a Cup again? Is this the same finalist Parmtree who questioned the integrity of the last CL organizer-cum-winner? A few newspapers in Denmark blame horrid refereeing decisions for Denmark's loss to the Azzurris and they claim that the Council may have a biased hand in it. They claim Isacki as saying "Blasphemy, I say. They might as well have direct qualification of the Council member into the finals. I mean - what's the point?"

Captain Super Mario to the rescue!
The formula to both the victories in the semi-finals was simple - captain Mario Balotelli. Who would have thought that this unruly, indisciplined troublemaker would turn out to be a huge huge hero? Well...SuperDunny and Milanista did. Bravo to their risks and I'm glad they reaped the reward. In fact, rumors suggest that after the match, Italy co-manager Milanista took Mario on a one-on-one romantic holiday to the Bahamas. If Mario doesn't turn up tonight, we all know who's to blame....but meanwhile here's what Mario had to say: http://i.imgur.com/tUBzB.gif

Group of Debt prevails over the Group of Death
As it turned out, Group C was an outright winner against Group B in the semi-finals. All the intimidating provocative posters of "Cash is King" by Group B managers were burned down at the Donetsk and such thoughts put to death by our finalists.

Right then....the big finale. A rematch of Group C's qualifiers: Italy vs Croatia.

On one hand, Croatia are unbeaten and are taking this Cup by a storm. They also possess the highest FPL rank in the Cup and the managers are known to have a reputation in big matches. On the other hand, you have the Azzurris, who're peaking at the right time and will be in the mood to avenge their loss in the group stages. Don't underestimate the Azzurris one bit, for they have the in-house Italian expert Milanista and the puntilicious Parmtree.

Previewing each of their Semi-final squads, it's very very tight. Croatia has 9 Spanish & 2 Italian starters comparing to Italy's 9 Spanish & 3 Italian starters. Of course, Italy also have a slight edge over holding onto a few doubtful starters. But clearly, this clash should boil down to captaincy, since they will have just one crucial chance at a successful captaincy choice.

Two of these four warriors will be crowned European Champions tonight and will retain the title for a long long time. Remember whilst there are the real-life heroes of Spain & Italy fighting out for Cup Glory, you also have these diligent warriors of the FFS world. Good luck to both our finalists!

Watch out for the Euro Cup Round-Up, cometh soon....

      Great article!

I'm still a little down that we lost to a Balotelli (c) but fair dues. It's going to be tight in the final, but I'm tipping team Italy because of Milanista's incredibly bold Spain - Italy team which looks set to pay off.

ANY opposition they play just pack the defence and midfield to try and stifle Spain. What are Spain supposed to do, surrender the ball and try and play on the counter against teams who will always keep 10/11 behind the ball?

I also have Balzaretti in my 11, I'm leaning towards not taking any hits at all, and sticking with Negredo + Balzaretti (I won't be by a computer for the line-ups)

Balzaretti, could come on at some point due to being the best proper laft back, and if either CB or RB are injured or sent off, he will be the first replacement

Negredo however, you never know, but after that shocker, i doubt it. I took a hit to field 11 and bench him

Well, its the Euro 2012 Final tonight and despite some "quips" that the Spanish are boring, I for one Cannot wait for what will be another display of technical footballing chess.

What Spain do with the ball is not easy, regardless of how short the pas or the direction, the sheer volume of passes and possession retention is amazing, and inevitably it will tire any opponent, but the contrasting style of the Italians should make the Final a real spectacle.

The Italians have had more shots than any other team in the tournament, and whilst not a counter attacking team as such they do seem to spring forward very quickly and they did cause Spain many problems in the opening group game and are still the only team to score against them this tournament!!

I would not say that either side is favorite going into this match, particularly after the Italians impressive win v the much fancied Germans. So I am off to Tesco shortly, to stock up on suppliers for this evenings entertainment, then have to decide on which shirt to wear......Spain or Italy??? Then place the lads bets of the tournament.......surely its not going to be a Torres winner?

Anyway....question, for the game should I bring in :
    A - M&Ms (peanut)
    B - Minstrels
    C- Choc Eclairs

    You have till 2pm.......

In footy training we often play 4v2 in decent sized space to allow the 4 to retain the ball comfortably against the 2 (no goals), the punishments are - if the two prevent 10 passes the 4 drop & 20, if the 4 hit 15 passes the 2 drop and 20.

This is for Seniors who play at a decent amateur level - the 4 are often on the floor!!!

Passing & retention is not easy as all players need to be comfortable on both feet when under pressure.....

The aim of football is to outscore your opponent fundamentally. Spain has a very good win record so kudos there, but they have become quite one dimensional, and as diffcult as stringing a thousand passes together is, when it counts for nought at the end of it then it can be very anti-climatic (what ppl are referring to as dull/boring). If you're spanish then the result by any means is paramount, if you're a football purist then you will be able to appreciate the technical abilities on display, but ultimately the 90% remaining neutrals watching will want entertaining football, i.e, getting the ball in the back of the net. Sadly, besides against the Irish, Spain has not looked effective in that regard. In summary....the boring comments are quite warranted and reasonably supported imho.

They will focus on the non-Barca players: Arbeloa, Ramos and Alonso...they typically hold the ball too long and revert to over-directness in passing. Not to mention they´re inconsistent with service to skill player´s feet in the hole. Also, watch Alonso an Arbeloa, they can get caught too far up the pitch.

66 pts ahead in my league, so will definitely be splashing out on 2 additional players to make up the 11. I so want Italy, but my mind tells me Spain will eke out a 2-1 win.

40 points ahead in my mini league but it looks like I am gonna have to spend some points.

    Casillas
Jordi Alba / Abate / Sergio Ramos
    Iniesta / Fàbregas / Pirlo / Busquets
    Balotelli / Negredo / Silva

Spending 3 points gets me the team above, but with Abate and Negredo unlikely to play, should I spend another 6 and cover them off?

You will not be spending 3 pts per player, but only 1 pt. You will get 2 pts back when they play. Furthermore, better to go for 2 additional players rather than 1 to spread the risk; one good selection will do better than the 2 pts for playing....go for it...

hmm, any thoughts on my strategy for tonight?

Am really unsure if I should go heavy on team and light on another or try to spread my coverage out more evenly. If it's 0-0 then it really makes no odds, but if it turns out to be high scoring then getting in the right players could be crucial.

    Am looking at something like

    Buffon

    Abate, Alba, Ramos, Chiellini

    De Rossi, Diamanti, Busquets, Iniesta

    Blaotelli Torres

        yup 🙁

Decided to spend the points on defence for that exact reason. If Spain keep a CS and Ramos as c gets to 5 rbs, that's 14 points. That's my hit pretty much made back. Other than Mario I don't see much value in the strikers on offer.

It's ironic that Spain are playing 4-6-0 as Villa is injured, Mario is only playing as Rossi is injured. 2 teams have made it to the final without their leading striker.

          That looks about right.

Abate will probably be taken off around 78th min.

    Casillas
    Alba, Abate, Bonucci
    Fabregas, Iniesta, Diamanti, Pirlo
    Pedro (c), Balo, Silva

In my opinion Spain´s only real chance is to play for second half as their form has lead them in this direction anyway. Silva should be benched for Navas, and brought on late, Fabs should probably come on 2nd half but start Torres, move Iniesta off the wing, he does no real overlapping or collabos with Alba anyway...in turn, he´s working way too hard for nothing...and it shows. Either way it doesn´t look good, the Italians will ball hawk the slower Spaniards (aka Madrid players).

Am I crazy for the ?

I´m staying with him. I live in Spain, and the natives are getting restless (ie:want Pedro playing, want Silva on for crucial 2nd half play), everyone outside of Sevilla knows Negredo is a bum, Spain´s version of a `working-wing´ Del Bosque is an absolute rock and doesn´t give anything away, but I think he´s given up on 1st half onslaughts. So I could see another placeholder first half striker like a Torres softening up the Italians...softening up meaning making them complacent with lack of diagonal movement and off-side trap strains.
