It’s been a couple of seasons since we’ve seen the best of Steven Gerrard from a domestic point of view. A one-time member of the midfield “Holy Trinity” along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Frank Lampard, the Liverpool skipper rescued many a Gameweek with his typical barnstorming displays but injuries have reduced him to no more than a peripheral figure in recent times:

Last term was a huge disappointment for Gerrard. Sidelined by a groin injury for the start of the campaign, his return to action in late September lasted a mere four matches before an infected ankle put paid to his comeback. Eventually finding his way back into Kenny Dalglish’s first-team again in Gameweek 21, Gerrard was utilised cautiously as the Anfield boss chose to focus on his side’s progress in cup competitions, in light of the Merseysiders’ poor league form.

A run of five back-to-back starts was the most he could muster and, with the club making their way to the FA Cup Final against Chelsea, Dalglish handed his captain just one appearance in the final six league matches. From a starting price of 11.0, Gerrard had dropped to 9.5 and produced just five goals and a couple of assists over the entire season, returning a haul of 75 points. A total of 18 appearances, with six of those coming from the bench, summed up his lack of impact but this summer’s Euro 2012 displays suggest form and fitness could well be his allies once again.

The Prospects

As Brendan Rodgers brings his patient passing game to Anfield following the dismissal of Dalglish, a change of playing style is on the cards next season. The former Swansea boss is likely to implement his preferred 4-3-3 formation and much will depend on how he utilises his central midfield options.

At the Liberty Stadium, Rodgers tended to have two sitting deep and a more creative, attacking type fielded further forward, as was the case with Gylfi Sigurdsson in the second half of the season. Fortunately for Rodgers, Lucas is on the road to recovery and looks in line to return at the start of the 2012/13 campaign – whether Gerrard will partner him in a deeper role or be handed a position further up the field will be keenly anticipated by Fantasy managers. Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson, Jay Spearing, Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Cole and Alberto Aquilani are all in the mix, though Rodgers will surely look to move on at least two or three as he goes about restructuring his somewhat bloated squad.

A price drop on the back of last term’s negligible returns looks inevitable – the Liverpool skipper could come in around the 10.0 mark and should also keep set-piece and spot-kick duties in his locker. A more attacking role, with Rodgers freeing him from the shackles of defensive duties, would allow Gerrard to preserve his energy and link with the likes of Luis Suarez up top – this would substantially boost his appeal and present us with an entirely different proposition altogether. Intriguingly, such a move was predicted by Rafa Benitez back in 2008, when the-then Reds boss reckoned:

The natural progression for him, when he becomes a bit older and loses a bit of pace or stamina, is to be a striker. He will never lose that eye for goal or accuracy in his shooting.

While pre-season may offer us a hint into Rodgers’ thinking, the Red’s tricky starting schedule, which sees City, Arsenal and United all rolling up to Anfield by Gameweek 5 will give us time to assess the situation and determine just whether Gerrard still has a part to play in our Fantasy thoughts for the campaign ahead.

If Moyes finds enough dough behind the sofa cushions, he'll be off to Everton. He'll be wasted staying, his best position would be in behind a centre striker, where DVD has ruled and Siggy has just strengthened.

Sterling as well, but with Liverpool being back in the Europa, I'd have thought he will solely feature in that.

Surely an RMT is a bit premature as the prices are speculative and the situation for a lot of players could change due to transfers anyway?

That said, I've missed this kind of thing! Here are my thoughts, for what it's worth!

Stoke defender: I don't see them picking up more than 1 clean sheet in the first 6 games. Unless it's a player who has significant attacking threat, I'd stay away. For 5m, you'd be lucky to get that!

Terry will probably be more than 6.5m.

A starting Swansea defender for 4.5m is optimistic given their performance last season. That, coupled with the change in manager (and also system/play style?) is enough to put me off unless there's a cheap starter.

Bale will be more than 9.5m but I suppose Siggy would be a decend shout. Taarabt is a decent shout for the first couple of gameweeks although I would be surprised if he gets 180 mins. After that his fixtures are horrible.

Aguero would be a great shout IF City don't sign a striker. Nice strikeforce! Also, Ireland at 6m is definitely tempting!

        Thanks for all your help.

        1) I think Stoke rotate well with West Ham and Reading with Swansea and that is why they are my backs. So rotate and play terry or Man city back every week.

        2) I agree Bale will be more but i will try to fit him in some way, if not Siggi will do. Taarabt and Ireland are my punts so i will see how much they play.

anybody else tempted to try something different this season - in terms of strategy?

ive been thinking about taking a couple of hits early on and planning for them, say 8pts after gwk1 and another 8 after gwk2 in order to build value in my squad (my poor start and team value crippled me last year)

thinking of going for 3 city gwk 1 then getting rid of 2 straight after for players likely to rise 0.2 that week, then

and also have 3 chelsea for the first 2 weeks and get rid of 2/3 after gwk2

the thinking being city in gwk1 and chelsea gwk1-2 will hopefully score well enough that my hits wont cost me as much and ill be sat with a nice team value and wildcard still in tact

    just an idea, any thoughts?

Team value is the main reason to play a WC early, but if you can get away with a few hits and still have it, and these transfers increase the value, that could be a decent option.

Suppose it depends if we get 2 WC's this season. If we do then I really don't mind using it early to get a load of risers, and have a decent team value for the second WC.

Only once has there been such a massive swing in the fixtures that I'd actually planned to use it early (Chelsea's piss easy first five games, then a few others had the same - 2 years ago?).

Usually I try to hold on to it, but especially during the early international breaks values can absolutely rocket and it does really help so much later in the season having a much higher team value.

The trouble is that I always there's always this urge to try and proove myself right by hanging onto your preseason picks, rather than just saying 'bleat' and transfering in Ryan Taylor. There's a lot to be said about early season bandwagons, but they just feel so incredibly dirty!

Doesn't sound like a good plan to me. That is 16 points for the sake of a bit better team value. If you have a decent team to start with , Team Value will come. I'm not sure when to use my WC, last year, i used it early during the International Break and my Team Value was great becasue of it, it definitely helped me down the line. But i also regretted not having the WC for a DGW. I am going to hold onto it for as long as possible, that is the plan anyway.

indeed but theres always the risk of a bad start, last season i started shockingly and had a team value of 98.9m after 6 gwks

if you went for aguero, balotelli, silva and torres, lampard, hazard for example you couldnt keep these long-term but in the wk1 and 2 they would probably return a fair few more points than players with a more average start so youd have a few points to play with and could take hits and still be in the pack but with a nice team value

Yeah i guess. If you have 3 Chelsea players you'll be in good shape though, a lot of people won't see that they have a blank in GW3 and will transfer them in for GW2 if they score well in the DGW.

Interesting idea but I wouldn't personally plan to take to take any hits.

If I need to, I will. If I need to take a lot of hits, I'll WC. Rather play my WC and take hits at a later stage for a DGW than end up with -16pts and a WC that I don't really need.

Also, team value comes with a good team. I try not to think too much about it as my low team value didn't really hinder me last year. Would rather have points than money in the bank/higher value players!

This is a criminal action. He's looking at fine, community service, poss jail time (very worst case scenario), if he's found guilty. I don't see any Chelsea read-across, unless he does get sent down, or the club feels compelled to make a point.

But remember, he could be entirely innocent.

That's not accurate. He didn't displace Vermaelen. He moved from left back to centre back when Heitinga left Ajax. He then partnered Vermaelen at centre back until Vermaelen made the step up to Arsenal.

If this is an actual letter from him, it could be propaganda, perfect timing, as the fans are upset & will now voice conerns.

Even if it is not a real letter, it is 100% correct, the current Arsenal board need to answer some serious questions about their plans for success. It seems their ambition is just to finish in the top 4.

Could THIS be the season that sees Pool out of the Top 10?

I have a funny feeling they'll have a good year. 4th would be their best hope mind you.

If Pienaar does move to Everton and his price doesn't rise too much, I'm very interested. With their new attack, this could be the year that they break their first-half-of-the-season curse and Pienaar would be a big part of it if they did.

Gonna be doubling up on Villa defenders i think. Lambert will make them difficult to beat.

Villa and Hammers rotate quite well for a bit - Given and another Villa defender might be decent.

Disagree about the point about Villa defence.

Look at Lambert's record - he's always focused on getting his attacking bases right. Think Gabby will be a big hit this season (cue: Mark's sleeper). Whether the extra focus on the attacking side of things impacts the defence, only time will tell.

However, think that Lambert should bring Villa back into the top 10.

I'm guessing the Bale vs Siggy decision is going to be a bugger. Siggy will be that little bit less, freeing up a bit of cash, but Bale has that proven track record of decent points. It's not even re-opened yet, and I'm thinking FPL.
